Stability of Fock states in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a regular classical counterpart

We study the stability of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the parameter regime in which its classical counterpart has regular motion. The stability is characterized by the fidelity for both the same and different initial states. We study as initial states the Fock states with definite numbers of atoms in each component of the BEC. It is found that for some initial times the two Fock states with all the atoms in the same component of the BEC are stabler than Fock states with atoms distributed in the two components. An experimental scheme is discussed, in which the fidelity can be measured in a direct way.

Rosen-Zener interferometry with Ultracold Atoms

We propose a time-domain "interferometer" based on ultracold Bose atoms loaded on a double well potential. By the adiabatic Rosen-Zener process, the barrier between two wells is ramped down slowly, held for a while, then ramped back. Starting with a coherent state of double well system, the final occupations on one well show interesting interference fringes in the time-domain. The fringe pattern is sensitive to the initial state, the interatomic interaction, and the external forces such as gravity which can change the shape of the double well. In this sense, this interferometric scheme has the potentials for precision measurements with ultracold atoms. The underlying mechanism is revealed and possible applications are discussed.

Anomalous Monopole In an Interacting Boson System

Anomalous monopole of disk shape is found to exist in the semiclassical theory of a two-mode interacting boson system. The quantum origin of this anomaly is the collapsing or bundling of field lines of Berry curvature caused by the interaction between bosons in the semiclassical limit. The significance of this anomalous monopole is twofold: (1) it signals the failure of the von Neumann-Wigner theorem in the semiclassical limit; (2) it indicates a breakdown of the correspondence principle between quantum and classical dynamics.

Overcoming the Circular Problem for γ-ray Bursts in Cosmological Global Fitting Analysis

Due to the lack of low redshift long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the circular problem has been a severe obstacle for using GRBs as cosmological candles. In this paper, we present a new method to deal with such a problem in MCMC global fitting analysis. Assuming that a certain type of correlations between different observables exists in a subsample of GRBs, for the parameters involved in the correlation relation, we treat them as free parameters and determine them simultaneously with cosmological parameters through MCMC analysis on GRB data together with other observational data. Then the circular problem is naturally eliminated in this procedure. We take the Ghirlanda relation as an example while keeping in mind the debate about its physical validity. Together with SNe Ia, WMAP and SDSS data, we include 27 GRBs with the reported Ghirlanda relation in our study, and perform MCMC global fitting. We consider the $Λ$CDM model and dynamical dark energy models. In each case, in addition to the constraints on the relevant cosmological parameters, we obtain the best fit values as well as the distributions of the correlation parameters $A$ and $C$. We find that the observational data sets other than GRBs can affect $A$ and $C$ considerably through their degeneracies with the cosmological parameters. The results on $A$ and $C$ for different cosmological models are in well agreement within $1σ$ range. The best fit value of $A$ in all models being analyzed is $A\sim 1.53$ with $σ\sim 0.08$. For $C$, we have the best value in the range of $0.94-0.98$ with $σ\sim 0.1$. It is also noted that the distributions of $A$ and $C$ are generally broader than the priors used in many studies in literature. (Abriged)

Role of Particle Interactions in the Feshbach Conversion of Fermion Atoms to Bosonic Molecules

We investigate the Feshbach conversion of fermion atomic pairs to condensed boson molecules with a microscopic model that accounts the repulsive interactions among all the particles involved. We find that the conversion efficiency is enhanced by the interaction between boson molecules while suppressed by the interactions between fermion atoms and between atom and molecule. In certain cases, the combined effect of these interactions leads to a ceiling of less than 100% on the conversion efficiency even in the adiabatic limit. Our model predicts a non-monotonic dependence of the efficiency on mean atomic density. Our theory agrees well with recent experiments on $^6$Li and $^{40}$K.

Rosen-Zener Transition in a Nonlinear Two-Level System

We study Rosen-Zener transition (RZT) in a nonlinear two-level system in which the level energies depend on the occupation of the levels, representing a mean-field type of interaction between the particles. We find that the nonlinearity could affect the quantum transition dramatically. At certain nonlinearity the 100% population transfer between two levels is observed and found to be robust over a very wide range of external parameters. On the other hand, the quantum transition could be completely blocked by a strong nonlinearity. In the sudden and adiabatic limits we have derived analytical expressions for the transition probability. Numerical explorations are made for a wide range of parameters of the general case. Possible applications of our theory to Bose-Einstern Condensates (BECs) are discussed.

Adiabatic Fidelity for Atom-Molecule Conversion in a Nonlinear Three-Level Λ-system

We investigate the dynamics of the population transfer for atom-molecule three-level $Λ$-system on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage(STIRAP). We find that the adiabatic fidelity for the coherent population trapping(CPT) state or dark state, as the function of the adiabatic parameter, approaches to unit in a power law. The power exponent however is much less than the prediction of linear adiabatic theorem. We further discuss how to achieve higher adiabatic fidelity for the dark state through optimizing the external parameters of STIRAP. Our discussions are helpful to gain higher atom-molecule conversion yield in practical experiments.

Classical Trajectory Perspective on Double Ionization Dynamics of Diatomic Molecules Irradiated by Ultrashort Intense Laser Pulses

In the present paper, we develop a semiclassical quasi-static model accounting for molecular double ionization in an intense laser pulse. With this model, we achieve insight into the dynamics of two highly-correlated valence electrons under the combined influence of a two-center Coulomb potential and an intense laser field, and reveal the significant influence of molecular alignment on the ratio of double over single ion yield. Analysis on the classical trajectories unveils sub-cycle dynamics of the molecular double ionization. Many interesting features, such as the accumulation of emitted electrons in the first and third quadrants of parallel momentum plane, the regular pattern of correlated momentum with respect to the time delay between closest collision and ionization moment, are revealed and successfully explained by back analyzing the classical trajectories. Quantitative agreement with experimental data over a wide range of laser intensities from tunneling to over-the-barrier regime is presented.

Self-Trapping of Bose-Einstein Condensates in an Optical Lattice: the Effect of the System Dimension

In the present paper, we investigate the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) loaded into an deep optical lattice of 1D, 2D and 3D, both analytically and numerically. We focus on the self-trapping state and the effect of the system dimension. Under the tight-binding approximation we obtain an analytical criterion for the self-trapping state of BEC using time-dependent variational method. The phase diagram for self-trapping, soliton, breather, or diffusion of the BEC cloud is obtained accordingly and verified by directly solving the discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) numerically. In particular, we find that the criterion and the phase diagrams are modified dramatically by the dimension of the lattices.

A Dynamic Algorithm for Blind Separation of Convolutive Sound Mixtures

We study an efficient dynamic blind source separation algorithm of convolutive sound mixtures based on updating statistical information in the frequency domain, andminimizing the support of time domain demixing filters by a weighted least square method. The permutation and scaling indeterminacies of separation, and concatenations of signals in adjacent time frames are resolved with optimization of $l^1 \times l^\infty$ norm on cross-correlation coefficients at multiple time lags. The algorithm is a direct method without iterations, and is adaptive to the environment. Computations on recorded and synthetic mixtures of speech and music signals show excellent performance.

Singularity of Berry Connections Inhibits the Accuracy of Adiabatic Approximation

Adiabatic approximation for quantum evolution is investigated quantitatively with addressing its dependence on the Berry connections. We find that, in the adiabatic limit, the adiabatic fidelity may uniformly converge to unit or diverge manifesting the breakdown of adiabatic approximation, depending on the type of the singularity of the Berry connections as the functions of slowly-varying parameter $R$. When the Berry connections have a singularity of $1/R^σ$ type with $σ< 1$, the adiabatic fidelity converges to unit in a power-law; whereas when the singularity index $σ$ is larger than one, adiabatic approximation breaks down. Two-level models are used to substantiate our theory.

Continuous measurements enhanced self-trapping of degenerate ultra-cold atoms: Nonlinear Quantum Zeno Effect

In the present paper we investigate the influence of measurements on the quantum dynamics of degenerate Bose atoms gases in a symmetric double-well. We show that continuous measurements enhance asymmetry on the density distribution of the atoms and broaden the parameter regime for self-trapping. We term this phenomenon as nonlinear quantum Zeno effect in analog to the celebrated Zeno effect in a linear quantum system. Under discontinuous measurements, the self-trapping due to the atomic interaction in the degenerate bosons is shown to be destroyed completely. Underlying physics is revealed and possible experimental realization is discussed.

Irregular Spin Tunnelling for Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Sweeping Magnetic Field

We investigate the spin tunnelling of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in a linearly sweeping magnetic field with a mean-field treatment. We focus on the two typical alkali Bose atoms $^{87}Rb$ and $^{23}Na$ condensates and study their tunnelling dynamics according to different sweeping rates of external magnetic fields. In the adiabatic (i.e., slowly sweeping) and sudden (i.e., fast sweeping) limits, no tunnelling is observed. For the case of moderate sweeping rates, the tunnelling dynamics is found to be very sensitive on the sweeping rates with showing a chaotic-like tunnelling regime. With magnifying the regime, however, we find interestedly that the plottings become resolvable under a resolution of $10^{-4}$ G/s where the tunnelling probability with respect to the sweeping rate shows a regular periodic-like pattern. Moreover, a conserved quantity standing for the magnetization in experiments is found can dramatically affect the above picture of the spin tunnelling. Theoretically we have given a reasonable interpretation to the above findings and hope our studies would bring more attention to spin tunnelling experimentally.

Quantum Entanglement Manifestation of Transition to Nonlinear Self-trapping for Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Symmetric Double-Well

We investigate the nonlinear self-trapping phenomenon of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a symmetric double-well, emphasizing on its behind dynamical phase transition. With increasing the nonlinear parameter depicting the interaction between the degenerate atoms the BEC turns to be self-trapped manifesting an asymmetric distribution of the atomic density profile. Essence of this phenomenon is revealed to be a continuous phase transition and underlying critical behavior is studied analytically and found to follow a logarithm scaling-law. We then go beyond the mean field treatment and extend to discuss the effect of the many-body quantum fluctuation on the transition. It is found that the transition point is shifted and the scaling-law is broken. In particular, the quantum phase transition is accompanied by the change of the entanglement entropy which is found to reach maximum at transition point. Behind physics is revealed.

Josephson Oscillation and Transition to Self-Trapping for Bose-Einstein-Condensates in a Triple-Well Trap

We investigate the tunnelling dynamics of Bose-Einstein-Condensates(BECs) in a symmetric as well as in a tilted triple-well trap within the framework of mean-field treatment. The eigenenergies as the functions of the zero-point energy difference between the tilted wells show a striking entangled star structure when the atomic interaction is large. We then achieve insight into the oscillation solutions around the corresponding eigenstates and observe several new types of Josephson oscillations. With increasing the atomic interaction, the Josephson-type oscillation is blocked and the self-trapping solution emerges. The condensates are self-trapped either in one well or in two wells but no scaling-law is observed near transition points. In particular, we find that the transition from the Josephson-type oscillation to the self-trapping is accompanied with some irregular regime where tunnelling dynamics is dominated by chaos. The above analysis is facilitated with the help of the Poicaré section method that visualizes the motions of BECs in a reduced phase plane.

Collective excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic trap

We investigate the collective excitations of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with repulsive interaction between atoms in a quadratic plus quartic trap. By using the variational approach, the coupled equations of motion for the center-of-mass coordinate of the condensate and its width are derived. Then, two low-energy excitation modes are obtained analytically. The frequency shift induced by the anharmonic distortion, and the collapse and revival of the collective excitations, which originate from the nonlinear coupling between the two modes, are discussed.

Charge-Resonance Effect on Harmonic Generation by Symmetric Diatomic Molecular Ions in Intense Laser Fields

In present paper we develop an analytic theory for the harmonic generation of symmetric diatomic molecular ions beyond two-level model, emphasizing the influence of charge-resonance (CR) states those are strongly coupled to electromagnetic fields for large internuclear distance. With taking into account the continuum states that is ignored in the two-level model and become important for intense laser case, our model is capable to produce spectrum for the whole range of harmonic orders consisting of a molecular plateau due to the CR transition and an atomic-like plateau for a long-wavelength excitation, and in good agreement with numerical results from directly solution of the Schrödinger equation. Our theory also identifies the crucial role of the CR states in the fine structure of harmonic spectrum and shows that the harmonic generation in molecular system can be effectively controlled by adjusting the internuclear distance.

Landau-Zener Tunnelling in a Nonlinear Three-level System

We present a comprehensive analysis of the Landau-Zener tunnelling of a nonlinear three-level system in a linearly sweeping external field. We find the presence of nonzero tunnelling probability in the adiabatic limit (i.e., very slowly sweeping field) even for the situation that the nonlinear term is very small and the energy levels keep the same topological structure as that of linear case. In particular, the tunnelling is irregular with showing an unresolved sensitivity on the sweeping rate. For the case of fast-sweeping fields, we derive an analytic expression for the tunnelling probability with stationary phase approximation and show that the nonlinearity can dramatically influence the tunnelling probability when the nonlinear "internal field" resonate with the external field. We also discuss the asymmetry of the tunnelling probability induced by the nonlinearity. Physics behind the above phenomena is revealed and possible application of our model to triple-well trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is discussed.
