Quantum resonance and anti-resonance for a periodically kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate in a one dimensional Box

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a periodically kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate confined in a one dimensional (1D) Box both numerically and theoretically, emphasizing on the phenomena of quantum resonance and anti-resonance. The quantum resonant behavior of BEC is different from the single particle case but the anti-resonance condition ($T = 2π$ and $α= 0$) is not affected by the atomic interaction. For the anti-resonance case, the nonlinearity (atom interaction) causes the transition between oscillation and quantum beating. For the quantum resonance case, because of the coherence of BEC, the energy increase is oscillating and the rate is dramatically affected by the many-body interaction. We also discuss the relation between the quantum resonant behavior and the KAM or non-KAM property of the corresponding classical system.

Self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

The self-trapping phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattices is studied extensively by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our numerical results not only reproduce the phenomenon that was observed in a recent experiment [Anker {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94} (2005)020403], but also find that the self-trapping breaks down at long evolution times, that is, the self-trapping in optical lattices is only temporary. The analysis of our numerical results shows that the self-trapping in optical lattices is related to the self-trapping of BECs in a double-well potential. A possible mechanism of the formation of steep edges in the wave packet evolution is explored in terms of the dynamics of relative phases between neighboring wells.

Pulse-duration dependence of high-order harmonic generation with coherent superposition state

We make a systematic study of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in a He$^+$-like model ion when the initial states are prepared as a coherent superposition of the ground state and an excited state. It is found that, according to the degree of the ionization of the excited state, the laser intensity can be divided into three regimes in which HHG spectra exhibit different characteristics. The pulse-duration dependence of the HHG spectra in these regimes is studied. We also demonstrate evident advantages of using coherent superposition state to obtain high conversion efficiency. The conversion efficiency can be increased further if ultrashort laser pulses are employed.

Periodic Modulation Effect on Self-Trapping of Two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

With phase space analysis approach, we investigate thoroughly the self-trapping phenomenon for two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a symmetric double-well potential. We identify two kinds of self-trapping by their different relative phase behavior. With applying a periodic modulation on the energy bias of the system we find the occurrence of the self-trapping can be controlled, saying, the transition parameters can be adjusted effectively by the periodic modulation. Analytic expressions for the dependence of the transition parameters on the modulation parameters are derived for high and low frequency modulations. For an intermediate frequency modulation, we find the resonance between the periodic modulation and nonlinear Rabi oscillation dramatically affects the tunnelling dynamics and demonstrate many novel phenomena. Finally, we study the effects of many-body quantum fluctuation on self-trapping and discuss the possible experimental realization of the model.

Transition to Instability in a Periodically Kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate on a Ring

A periodically kicked ring of a Bose-Einstein condensate is considered as a nonlinear generalization of the quantum kicked rotor, where the nonlinearity stems from the mean field interactions between the condensed atoms. For weak interactions, periodic motion (anti-resonance) becomes quasiperiodic (quantum beating) but remains stable. There exists a critical strength of interactions beyond which quasiperiodic motion becomes chaotic, resulting in an instability of the condensate manifested by exponential growth in the number of noncondensed atoms. In the stable regime, the system remains predominantly in the two lowest energy states and may be mapped onto a spin model, from which we obtain an analytic expression for the beat frequency and discuss the route to instability. We numerically explore parameter regime for the occurrence of instability and reveal the characteristic density profile for both condensed and noncondensed atoms. The Arnold diffusion to higher energy levels is found to be responsible for the transition to instability. Similar behavior is observed for dynamically localized states (essentially quasiperiodic motions), where stability remains for weak interactions but is destroyed by strong interactions.

Commutability between Semiclassical Limit and Adiabatic Limit

We study the semiclassical limit and the adiabatic limit with a second-quantized two-mode model, which describes a many-boson interacting system. When its mean-field interaction is small, these two limits are commutable. However, when the interaction is strong and over a critical value, the two limits become incommutable. This change of commutability is associated with a topological change in the structure of the energy bands. These results reveal that nonlinear mean-field theories, such as Gross-Pitaevskii equations for Bose-Einstein condensates, can be invalid in the adiabatic limit.

A Fixed-Length Coding Algorithm for DNA Sequence Compression

While achieving a compression ratio of 2.0 bits/base, the new algorithm codes non-N bases in fixed length. It dramatically reduces the time of coding and decoding than previous DNA compression algorithms and some universal compression programs.

Band Structure, Phonon Scattering and the Ultimate Performance of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Transistors

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied in the diffusive transport regime. The peak mobility is found to scale with the square of the nanotube diameter and inversely with temperature. The maximum conductance, corrected for the contacts, is linear in the diameter and inverse temperature. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for acoustic phonon scattering in combination with the unusual band structure of nanotubes. These measurements set the upper bound for the performance of nanotube transistors operating in the diffusive regime.

On Incompressible Navier-Stokes Dynamics: A New Approach for Analysis and Computation

We show that in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions, the Navier-Stokes pressure can be determined in a such way that it is strictly dominated by viscosity. As a consequence, in a general domain we can treat the Navier-Stokes equations as a perturbed vector diffusion equation, instead of as a perturbed Stokes system. To illustrate the advantages of this view, we provide a simple proof of the unconditional stability of a difference scheme that is implicit only in viscosity and explicit in both pressure and convection terms, requiring no solution of stationary Stokes systems or inf-sup conditions.

Fidelity of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate fidelity, the Loschmidt echo, for a Bose-Einstein Condensate. It is found that the fidelity decays with time in various ways (exponential, Gaussian, and power-law), depending on the choice of initial coherent state as well as the parameters that determine properties of the underlying classical dynamics. Moreover, high fidelity is found for initial states lying in the regular region of a mixed-type phase space. A possible experimental scheme is suggested.

Divorcing pressure from viscosity in incompressible Navier-Stokes dynamics

We show that in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions, the Navier-Stokes pressure can be determined in a such way that it is strictly dominated by viscosity. As a consequence, in a general domain we can treat the Navier-Stokes equations as a perturbed vector diffusion equation, instead of as a perturbed Stokes system. We illustrate the advantages of this view in a number of ways. In particular, we provide simple proofs of (i) local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for an unconstrained formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, and (ii) the unconditional stability and convergence of difference schemes that are implicit only in viscosity and explicit in both pressure and convection terms, requiring no solution of stationary Stokes systems or inf-sup conditions.

Quantum Chaos of Bogoliubov Waves for a Bose-Einstein Condensate in Stadium Billiards

We investigate the possibility of quantum (or wave) chaos for the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in billiards. Because of the mean field interaction in the condensate, the Bogoliubov excitations are very different from the single particle excitations in a non-interacting system. Nevertheless, we predict that the statistical distribution of level spacings is unchanged by mapping the non-Hermitian Bogoliubov operator to a real symmetric matrix. We numerically test our prediction by using a phase shift method for calculating the excitation energies.

Adiabatic Geometric Phase for a General Quantum States

A geometric phase is found for a general quantum state that undergoes adiabatic evolution. For the case of eigenstates, it reduces to the original Berry's phase. Such a phase is applicable in both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. Furthermore, this new phase is related to Hannay's angles as we find that these angles, a classical concept, can arise naturally in quantum systems. The results are demonstrated with a two-level model.

Critical onset in coherent oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

The Josephson effects in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates have been studied recently. In this letter, we study the equations derived by Giovanazzi et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4521 (2000)] focusing on the effects of the initial acceleration and the velocity of the barrier on the ``dc'' current. We find that the dc current has lifetime which critically depends on the moving velocity of the barrier. Moreover, the influence of the initial acceleration is also investigated and found to be crucial for the experimental realization of the effects.

Adiabatic Theory of Nonlinear Evolution of Quantum States

We present a general theory for adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our theory not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates, but also characterizes the motion of non-eigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that in the adiabatic evolution of non-eigenstates, the Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions.

The configuration of a topological current and physical structure: an application and paradigmatic evidence

In the $ϕ$-mapping theory, the topological current constructed by the order parameters can possess different inner structure. The difference in topology must correspond to the difference in physical structure. The transition between different structures happens at the bifurcation point of the topological current. In a self-interaction two-level system, the change of topological particles corresponds to change of energy levels.

Correlated electron emission in laser-induced nonsequence double ionization of Helium

In this paper, we have investigated the correlated electron emission of the nonsequence double ionization (NSDI) in an intense linearly polarized field. The theoretical model we employed is the semiclassical rescattering model, the model atom we used is the helium. We find a significant correlation between magnitude and direction of the momentum of two emission electrons, and give a good explanation for this striking phenomenon by observing the classical collisional trajectories. We argue that this correlation phenomenon is universal in NSDI process, as revealed by the recent experiment on the argon.
