1D flat bands in phosphorene nanoribbons with pentagonal nature

Materials with flat bands can serve as a promising platform to investigate strongly interacting phenomena. However, experimental realization of ideal flat bands is mostly limited to artificial lattices or moiré systems. Here we report a general way to construct one-dimensional (1D) flat bands in phosphorene nanoribbons (PNRs) with pentagonal nature: penta-hexa-PNRs and penta-dodeca-PNRs, wherein the corresponding 1D flat bands are directly verified by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We confirm that the observed 1D flat bands originate from the electronic 1D zigzag and Lieb lattices, respectively, as revealed by the combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, tight-binding models, and first-principles calculations. Our study demonstrates a general way to construct 1D flat bands in 1D solid materials system, which provides a robust platform to explore strongly interacting phases of matter.

Mechanism of the Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Self-Propelled Particles with Alignment

Self-propelled particles with alignment, displaying ordered collective motions such as swarming, can be investigated by the well-known Vicsek model. However, challenges still remain regarding the nature of the associated phase transition. Here, we use the landscape-flux approach combined with the coarse-grained mapping method to reveal the underlying mechanism of the continuous or discontinuous order-disorder nonequilibrium phase transition in Vicsek model systems featuring diverse noise characteristics. It is found that the nonequilibrium flux inside the landscape in the density-alignment degree phase space always rotates counterclockwise, and tends to delocalize or destabilize the point attractor states, providing the dynamical driving force for altering the landscape shape and the system state. Furthermore, the variations in the averaged flux and entropy production rate exhibit pronounced differences across various noise types. This not only helps to reveal the dynamical and thermodynamical mechanisms of the order-disorder transition but also offers a useful tool to recognize the continuity of the transition. Our findings present a novel perspective for exploring nonequilibrium phase transition behaviors and other collective motions in various complex systems.

Neural Dynamics Model of Visual Decision-Making: Learning from Human Experts

Uncovering the fundamental neural correlates of biological intelligence, developing mathematical models, and conducting computational simulations are critical for advancing new paradigms in artificial intelligence (AI). In this study, we implemented a comprehensive visual decision-making model that spans from visual input to behavioral output, using a neural dynamics modeling approach. Drawing inspiration from the key components of the dorsal visual pathway in primates, our model not only aligns closely with human behavior but also reflects neural activities in primates, and achieving accuracy comparable to convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified key neuroimaging features such as structural connections and functional connectivity that are associated with performance in perceptual decision-making tasks. A neuroimaging-informed fine-tuning approach was introduced and applied to the model, leading to performance improvements that paralleled the behavioral variations observed among subjects. Compared to classical deep learning models, our model more accurately replicates the behavioral performance of biological intelligence, relying on the structural characteristics of biological neural networks rather than extensive training data, and demonstrating enhanced resilience to perturbation.

Enchanting Program Specification Synthesis by Large Language Models using Static Analysis and Program Verification

Formal verification provides a rigorous and systematic approach to ensure the correctness and reliability of software systems. Yet, constructing specifications for the full proof relies on domain expertise and non-trivial manpower. In view of such needs, an automated approach for specification synthesis is desired. While existing automated approaches are limited in their versatility, i.e., they either focus only on synthesizing loop invariants for numerical programs, or are tailored for specific types of programs or invariants. Programs involving multiple complicated data types (e.g., arrays, pointers) and code structures (e.g., nested loops, function calls) are often beyond their capabilities. To help bridge this gap, we present AutoSpec, an automated approach to synthesize specifications for automated program verification. It overcomes the shortcomings of existing work in specification versatility, synthesizing satisfiable and adequate specifications for full proof. It is driven by static analysis and program verification, and is empowered by large language models (LLMs). AutoSpec addresses the practical challenges in three ways: (1) driving \name by static analysis and program verification, LLMs serve as generators to generate candidate specifications, (2) programs are decomposed to direct the attention of LLMs, and (3) candidate specifications are validated in each round to avoid error accumulation during the interaction with LLMs. In this way, AutoSpec can incrementally and iteratively generate satisfiable and adequate specifications. The evaluation shows its effectiveness and usefulness, as it outperforms existing works by successfully verifying 79% of programs through automatic specification synthesis, a significant improvement of 1.592x. It can also be successfully applied to verify the programs in a real-world X509-parser project.

Towards Practical Requirement Analysis and Verification: A Case Study on Software IP Components in Aerospace Embedded Systems

IP-based software design is a crucial research field that aims to improve efficiency and reliability by reusing complex software components known as intellectual property (IP) components. To ensure the reusability of these components, particularly in security-sensitive software systems, it is necessary to analyze the requirements and perform formal verification for each IP component. However, converting the requirements of IP components from natural language descriptions to temporal logic and subsequently conducting formal verification demands domain expertise and non-trivial manpower. This paper presents a case study on software IP components derived from aerospace embedded systems, with the objective of automating the requirement analysis and verification process. The study begins by employing Large Language Models to convert unstructured natural language into formal specifications. Subsequently, three distinct verification techniques are employed to ascertain whether the source code meets the extracted temporal logic properties. By doing so, five real-world IP components from the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) have been successfully verified.

Asteroseismological analysis of the non-Blazhko RRab star EPIC~248846335 in LAMOST -- Kepler$/$ K2 project

We conduct an asteroseismological analysis on the non-Blazhko ab-type RR Lyrae star EPIC 248846335 employing the Radial Stellar Pulsations (RSP) module of the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) based on the set of stellar parameters. The atmospheric parameters as $T_\mathrm{eff}$ = 6933$\pm$70 $K$, log $g$ = 3.35$\pm$ 0.50 and [Fe/H] = -1.18 $\pm$ 0.14 are estimated from the Low-Resolution Spectra of LAMOST DR9. The luminosity $L$ = 49.70$_{-1.80}^{+2.99}$ $L_\odot$ and mass M = 0.56 $\pm$ 0.07 $M_\odot$ are calculated, respectively, using the distance provided by Gaia and the metallicity estimated from the Low-Resolution Spectra. The Fourier parameters of the light curves observed by $K2$ and RV curves determined from the Medium-Resolution Spectra of LAMOST DR10 are also calculated in this work. The period of the fundamental mode of the star and the residuals $r$ of the Fourier parameters between the models and observations serve to select optimal model, whose stellar parameters are $T_\mathrm{eff}$ = 6700 $\pm$ 220 K, log $g$ = 2.70, [Fe/H] = -1.20 $\pm$ 0.2, M = 0.59 $\pm$ 0.05 $M_\odot$, and $L$ = 56.0 $\pm$ 4.2 $L_\odot$. The projection factors are constrained as 1.20 $\pm$ 0.02 and 1.59 $\pm$ 0.13 by the blue- and red-arm observed velocities with their corresponding RV curves derived from the best-fit model, respectively. The precise determination of stellar parameters in ab-type RR Lyrae stars is crucial for understanding the physical processes that occur during pulsation and for providing a deeper understanding of its Period-Luminosity relationship.

Long-term double synchronization in close-in gas giant planets

Hot Jupiters, orbiting their host stars at extremely close distances, undergo tidal evolution, with some being engulfed by their stars due to angular momentum exchanges induced by tidal forces. However, achieving double synchronization can prolong their survival. Using the MESA stellar evolution code, combined with the magnetic braking model of Matt et al. (2015), we calculate 25,000 models with different metallicity and study how to attain the conditions that trigger the long-term double synchronization. Our results indicate that massive planets orbiting stars with lower convective turnover time are easier to achieve long-term double synchronization. The rotation angular velocity at the equilibrium point ($Ω_{\mathrm{sta}}$) is almost equal to orbital angular velocity of planet ($\mathrm{n}$) for the majority of the main sequence lifetime if a system has undergone a long-term double synchronization, regardless of their state at this moment. We further compared our results with known parameters of giant planetary systems and found that those systems with larger planetary masses and lower convective turnover time seem to be less sensitive to changes in the tidal quality factor $Q'_{_*}$. We suggest that for systems that fall on the state of $Ω_{\mathrm{sta}} \approx n$, regardless of their current state, the synchronization will persist for a long time if orbital synchronization occurs at any stage of their evolution. Our results can be applied to estimate whether a system has experienced long-term double synchronization in the past or may experience it in the future.

Two high-amplitude $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus hybrids constrained by the radial fundamental p and equally spaced g modes

Based on 2-minute cadence TESS data, we investigate pulsations of TIC 65138566 and TIC 139729335 and discover them to be two new HADS stars with equally spaced g modes. We recognize the radial fundamental mode $f_1$ = 18.3334 c/d and the first overtone $f_3$ = 23.6429 c/d for TIC 65138566, and identify the highest peak $f_1$ = 19.0955 c/d as the radial fundamental mode for TIC 139729335. For g modes, both stars display a regular period spacing of 2413 s. Through detailed seismological analysis, we deduce that these period spacing patterns correspond to modes with $\ell$ = 1. Moreover, our analysis reveals that with the increase in masses and metallicities, the star should display a higher degree of evolution to match a specific period spacing $Π_0$. Conversely, the star should have a lower extent of evolution to match the radial fundamental mode. These two contradictory behaviors allow us to precisely obtain stellar physical parameters. TIC 65138566 and TIC 139729335 are determined to be two main sequence stars that have almost the same range of masses and metallicities, with $M$ = 1.36 $\pm$ 0.06 $M_{\odot}$ and $Z$ = 0.005 $\pm$ 0.002. The hydrogen abundance in the core of TIC 65138566 is estimated to be about 0.28, while TIC 139729335 has a slightly higher value of around 0.31. Finally, we suggest that the HADS $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus star TIC 308396022 is a main sequence star with $M$ = 1.54 $\pm$ 0.08 $M_{\odot}$, $Z$ = 0.007 $\pm$ 0.001, and $X_{\rm c}$ = 0.18 $\pm$ 0.02.

The formation of blue large-amplitude pulsators from white-dwarf main-sequence star mergers

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) are hot low-mass stars which show large-amplitude light variations likely due to radial oscillations driven by iron-group opacities. Period changes provide evidence of both secular contraction and expansion amongst the class. Various formation histories have been proposed, but none are completely satisfactory. \citet{Zhang2017} proposed that the merger of a helium core white dwarf with a low-mass main-sequence star (HeWD+MS) can lead to the formation of some classes of hot subdwarf. We have analyzed these HeWD+MS merger models in more detail. Between helium-shell ignition and full helium-core burning, the models pass through the volume of luminosity -- gravity-- temperature space occupied by BLAPs. Periods of expansion and contraction associated with helium-shell flashes can account for the observed rates of period change. We argue that the HeWD+MS merger model provides at least one BLAP formation channel.

Predicting Astrometric Microlensing Events from Gaia DR3

Currently astrometric microlensing is the only tool that can directly measure the mass of a single star, it can also help us to detect compact objects like isolated neutron stars and black holes. The number of microlensing events that are being predicted and reported is increasing. In the paper, the potential lens stars are selected from three types of stars, high-proper-motion stars, nearby stars and high-mass stars. For each potential lens star, we select a larger search scope to find possible matching sources to avoid missing events as much as possible. Using Gaia DR3 data, we predict 4500 astrometric microlensing events with signal>0.1mas that occur between J2010.0 and J2070.0, where 1664 events are different from those found previously. There are 293 lens stars that can cause two or more events, where 5 lens stars can cause more than 50 events. We find that 116 events have the distance of background stars from the proper motion path of lens stars more than 8 arcsec in the reference epoch, where the maximum distance is 16.6 arcsec, so the cone search method of expanding the search range of sources for each potential lens star can reduce the possibility of missing events.

Topological design and synthesis of high-spin aza-triangulenes without Jahn-Teller distortions

The atomic doping of open-shell nanographenes enables the precise tuning of their electronic and magnetic state, which is crucial for their promising potential applications in optoelectronics and spintronics. Among this intriguing class of molecules, triangulenes stand out with their size-dependent electronic properties and spin states, which can also be influenced by the presence of dopant atoms and functional groups. However, the occurrence of Jahn-Teller distortions in such systems can have a crucial impact on their total spin and requires further theoretical and experimental investigation. In this study, we examine the nitrogen-doped aza-triangulene series via a combination of density functional theory and on-surface synthesis. We identify a general trend in the calculated spin states of aza-[n]triangulenes of various sizes, separating them into two symmetry classes, one of which features molecules that are predicted to undergo Jahn-Teller distortions that reduce their symmetry and thus their total spin. We link this behavior to the location of the central nitrogen atom relative to the two underlying carbon sublattices of the molecules. Consequently, our findings reveal that centrally-doped aza-triangulenes have one less radical than their undoped counterparts, irrespective of their predicted symmetry. We follow this by demonstrating the on-surface synthesis of π-extended aza-[5]triangulene, a large member of the higher symmetry class without Jahn-Teller distortions, via a simple one-step annealing process on Cu(111) and Au(111). Using scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations, we prove that the molecule is positively charged on the Au(111) substrate, with a high-spin quintet state of S = 2, the same total spin as undoped neutral [5]triangulene.

Aerodynamic performance enhancement and noise reduction for Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines: V-shaped blades and trailing-edge serrations

The Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are one of the mainstream devices for wind energy utilization in the urban areas. The market's pursuit of high wind energy conversion efficiency promotes the research on improving the wind turbine power coefficient while reducing noise. This paper makes further investigation on the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of a small VAWT with V-shaped blades and trailing-edge serrations. The feasibility of utilizing the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes SST k-omega turbulence model and the FW-H method is verified against experiments. The studied V-shaped blades can effectively improve the power performance of VAWT over a wide range of tip speed ratios under normal wind speed conditions, and the trailing-edge serrations will also slightly increase the power output of V-bladed VAWT at the optimal tip speed ratio. The power coefficient of the V-bladed wind turbine with trailing-edge serrations is about 28.3% higher than that of the original turbine. In addition, a dumbbell-shaped noise directivity distribution was first discovered in the VAWT compared with the traditional elliptical distribution. The V-bladed VAWT generated less low-frequency noise and the trailing-edge serrations realized the expected noise reduction effect. Practically, this study proposes a feasible solution for the design of high-efficiency and low-noise wind turbines.

Dynamic and Thermodynamic Origins of Motility-Induced Phase Separation

Active matter systems are inherently out of equilibrium and break the detailed balance (DB) at the microscopic scale, exhibiting vital collective phenomena such as motility-induced phase separation (MIPS). Here, we introduce a coarse-grained mapping method to probe DB breaking in the density-energy phase space, which allows us to reveal the dynamic and thermodynamic origins of MIPS based on nonequilibrium potential and flux landscape theory. Hallmarks of nonequilibrium properties are manifested by identifying the visible probability flux in the coarse-grained phase space. Remarkably, the flux for the system with the activity lower than the MIPS threshold tends to ``tear up" the single potential well of the uniform-density phase to create two wells of phases with different densities, presenting directly that the nonequilibrium flux is the dynamic origin of MIPS. Moreover, we find that the obtained entropy production rate (EPR) of the system undergoes a transition from nearly independent of activity to increasing proportionally as activity increases after the single well is "teared up". The transition of EPR's scaling behavior might provide a hint of the thermodynamic origin of MIPS in the coarse-grained space. Our findings propose a new route to explore the nonequilibrium nature of active systems, and provide new insights into dynamic and thermodynamic properties of MIPS.

Asteroseismology of the pulsating extremely low-mass white dwarf SDSS J111215.82+111745.0: a model with $p$-mode pulsations consistent with the observations

SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 is the second pulsating extremely low-mass white dwarf discovered. Two short-period pulsations, 107.56 and 134.275 s, were detected on this star, which would be the first observed pressure mode ($p$-mode) pulsations observed on a white dwarf. While the two potential $p$-modes have yet to be confirmed, they make SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 an interesting object. In this work, we analyzed the whole set of seven periods observed on SDSS J111215.82+111745.0. We adopt three independent period-spacing tests to reveal a roughly 93.4 s mean period spacing of $\ell=1$ $g$-modes, which gives added credence to the $\ell=1$ identifications. Then we perform asteroseismic modeling for this star, in which the H chemical profile is taken as a variable. The stellar parameters $M=0.1650\pm0.0137$ $M_\odot$ and $T_\mathrm{eff}=9750\pm560$ K are determined from the best-fit model and the H/He chemical profiles are also defined. The two suspected $p$-modes are also well represented in the best-fit model, and both the stellar parameters and the pulsation frequencies are in good agreement with the values derived from spectroscopy.

Coexistence of in-plane and out-of-plane exchange Bias in correlated kagome antiferromagnet Mn3- xCrxSn

The materials exhibiting exchange bias (EB) have been extensively investigated mainly due to their great technological applications in magnetic sensors, but its underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here we report the novel coexistence of in-plane and out-of-plane EB in the Cr-doped Mn3Sn, a non-colinear antiferromagnet with a geometrically frustrated Kagome plane of Mn. Field-cooling experiments with the applied field parallel and perpendicular to the frustrated Kagome plane exhibits loop shifts and enhanced coercivities. Interestingly, a maximum EB field of 1090 Oe is observed along out-of-plane direction in the Mn2.58Cr0.42Sn sample, higher than that of in-plane value. Our results indicate that the exchange bias along perpendicular kagome plane is primarily induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions due to the breaking of interfacial symmetry, while the EB along kagome plane is due to the exchange effects at interface of AFM and FM component originating from the net moment. These findings provide a new insight on EB in the kagome AFM materials, which are important and highly potential to the application of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

K2 photometry on oscillation mode variability: the new pulsating hot B subdwarf star EPIC 220422705

We present an analysis of oscillation mode variability in the hot B subdwarf star EPIC~220422705, a new pulsator discovered from $\sim78$~days of {\em K}2 photometry. The high-quality light curves provide a detection of 66 significant independent frequencies, from which we identified 9 incomplete potential triplets and 3 quintuplets. Those {\sl g-} and {\sl p-}multiplets give rotation periods of $\sim$ 36 and 29 days in the core and at the surface, respectively, potentially suggesting a slightly differential rotation. We derived a period spacing of 268.5\,s and 159.4\,s for the sequence of dipole and quadruple modes, respectively. We characterized the precise patterns of amplitude and frequency modulations (AM and FM) of 22 frequencies with high enough amplitude for our science. Many of them exhibit intrinsic and periodic patterns of AM and FM, with periods on a timescale of months as derived by the best fitting and \texttt{MCMC} test. The nonlinear resonant mode interactions could be a natural interpretation for such AMs and FMs after other mechanisms are ruled out. Our results are the first step to build a bridge between mode variability from {\em K}2 photometry and nonlinear perturbation theory of stellar oscillation.

Effective Entropy Production and Thermodynamic Uncertainty Relation of Active Brownian Particles

Understanding stochastic thermodynamics of active Brownian particles (ABPs) system has been an important topic in very recent years. In this article we study a general model of active Brownian particle systems by introducing a coarse-grained Fokker-Planck equation, which allows us to identify an effective entropy production along a stochastic trajectory, wherein an activity and configuration dependent diffusion coefficient comes into play with an important role. Although the hidden component between the true entropy production and the effective one is dominant, the effective entropy production still act as a reliable measure to quantify the dynamical irreversibility, capturing important phenomenon such as the interface and defects of motility induced phase separation (MIPS). Furthermore, in this framework, we are able to obtain the entropic bound as well as TUR associated with any generalized currents in the systems. We expect the new conceptual quantities proposed here to be broadly used in the context of active matter.

Designer magnetic topological graphene nanoribbons

The interplay of magnetism and topology lies at the heart of condensed matter physics, which offers great opportunities to design intrinsic magnetic topological materials hosting a variety of exotic topological quantum states including the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), axion insulator state, and Majorana bound states. Extending this concept to one-dimension (1D) systems offers additional rich quantum spin physics with great promise for molecular-scale spintronics. Despite recent progress in the discovery of symmetry-protected topological quantum phases in 1D graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), the rational design and realization of magnetic topological GNRs (MT-GNRs) represents a grand challenge, as one must tackle multiple dimensions of complexity including time-reversal symmetry (TRS), spatial symmetry (width, edge, end geometry) and many-electron correlations. Here, we devised a new route involving the real- and reciprocal-space descriptions by unifying the chemists and physicists perspectives, for the design of such MT-GNRs with non-trivial electronic topology and robust magnetic terminal. Classic Clar's rule offers a conceptually qualitative real-space picture to predict the transition from closed-shell to open-shell with terminal magnetism, and band gap reopening with possible non-trivial electronic topology in a series of wave-like GNRs, which are further verified by first principle calculations of band-structure topology in a momentum-space. With the advance of on-surface synthesis and careful design of molecular precursors, we have fabricated these MT-GNRs with observation of topological edge bands, whose terminal pi-magnetism can be directly captured using a single-nickelocene spin sensor. Moreover, the transition from strong anti-ferromagnetic to weak coupling (paramagnetism-like) between terminal spins can be controlled by tuning the length of MT-GNRs.
