Quantum fluctuation of ferroelectric order in polar metals

Since its discovery a decade ago, "polar metallic phase" has ignited significant research interest, as it further functionalizes the switchable electric polarization of materials with additional transport capability, granting them great potential in next-generation electronic devices. The polar metallic phase is an unusual metallic phase of matter containing long-range ferroelectric (FE) order in the electronic and atomic structure. Distinct from the typical FE insulating phase, this phase spontaneously breaks the inversion symmetry but without global polarization. Unexpectedly, the FE order is found to be dramatically suppressed by carriers and destroyed at moderate ~10% carrier density. Here, we propose a general mechanism based on carrier-induced quantum fluctuations to explain this puzzling phenomenon. Basically, the quantum kinetic effect would drive the formation of polaronic quasi-particles made of the carriers and their surrounding dipoles. The disruption in dipolar directions can therefore weaken or even destroy the FE order. We demonstrate such polaron formation and the associated FE suppression via a simple model using exact diagonalization, perturbation, and quantum Monte Carlo approaches. This quantum mechanism also provides an intuitive picture for many puzzling experimental findings, thereby facilitating new designs of multifunctional FE electronic devices augmented with quantum effects.

Generalization in Visual Reinforcement Learning with the Reward Sequence Distribution

Generalization in partially observed markov decision processes (POMDPs) is critical for successful applications of visual reinforcement learning (VRL) in real scenarios. A widely used idea is to learn task-relevant representations that encode task-relevant information of common features in POMDPs, i.e., rewards and transition dynamics. As transition dynamics in the latent state space -- which are task-relevant and invariant to visual distractions -- are unknown to the agents, existing methods alternatively use transition dynamics in the observation space to extract task-relevant information in transition dynamics. However, such transition dynamics in the observation space involve task-irrelevant visual distractions, degrading the generalization performance of VRL methods. To tackle this problem, we propose the reward sequence distribution conditioned on the starting observation and the predefined subsequent action sequence (RSD-OA). The appealing features of RSD-OA include that: (1) RSD-OA is invariant to visual distractions, as it is conditioned on the predefined subsequent action sequence without task-irrelevant information from transition dynamics, and (2) the reward sequence captures long-term task-relevant information in both rewards and transition dynamics. Experiments demonstrate that our representation learning approach based on RSD-OA significantly improves the generalization performance on unseen environments, outperforming several state-of-the-arts on DeepMind Control tasks with visual distractions.

SportsTrack: An Innovative Method for Tracking Athletes in Sports Scenes

The SportsMOT dataset aims to solve multiple object tracking of athletes in different sports scenes such as basketball or soccer. The dataset is challenging because of the unstable camera view, athletes' complex trajectory, and complicated background. Previous MOT methods can not match enough high-quality tracks of athletes. To pursue higher performance of MOT in sports scenes, we introduce an innovative tracker named SportsTrack, we utilize tracking by detection as our detection paradigm. Then we will introduce a three-stage matching process to solve the motion blur and body overlapping in sports scenes. Meanwhile, we present another innovation point: one-to-many correspondence between detection bboxes and crowded tracks to handle the overlap of athletes' bodies during sports competitions. Compared to other trackers such as BOT-SORT and ByteTrack, We carefully restored edge-lost tracks that were ignored by other trackers. Finally, we reached the SOTA result in the SportsMOT dataset.

Learning Cut Selection for Mixed-Integer Linear Programming via Hierarchical Sequence Model

Cutting planes (cuts) are important for solving mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs), which formulate a wide range of important real-world applications. Cut selection -- which aims to select a proper subset of the candidate cuts to improve the efficiency of solving MILPs -- heavily depends on (P1) which cuts should be preferred, and (P2) how many cuts should be selected. Although many modern MILP solvers tackle (P1)-(P2) by manually designed heuristics, machine learning offers a promising approach to learn more effective heuristics from MILPs collected from specific applications. However, many existing learning-based methods focus on learning which cuts should be preferred, neglecting the importance of learning the number of cuts that should be selected. Moreover, we observe from extensive empirical results that (P3) what order of selected cuts should be preferred has a significant impact on the efficiency of solving MILPs as well. To address this challenge, we propose a novel hierarchical sequence model (HEM) to learn cut selection policies via reinforcement learning. Specifically, HEM consists of a two-level model: (1) a higher-level model to learn the number of cuts that should be selected, (2) and a lower-level model -- that formulates the cut selection task as a sequence to sequence learning problem -- to learn policies selecting an ordered subset with the size determined by the higher-level model. To the best of our knowledge, HEM is the first method that can tackle (P1)-(P3) in cut selection simultaneously from a data-driven perspective. Experiments show that HEM significantly improves the efficiency of solving MILPs compared to human-designed and learning-based baselines on both synthetic and large-scale real-world MILPs, including MIPLIB 2017. Moreover, experiments demonstrate that HEM well generalizes to MILPs that are significantly larger than those seen during training.

Tagging before Alignment: Integrating Multi-Modal Tags for Video-Text Retrieval

Vision-language alignment learning for video-text retrieval arouses a lot of attention in recent years. Most of the existing methods either transfer the knowledge of image-text pretraining model to video-text retrieval task without fully exploring the multi-modal information of videos, or simply fuse multi-modal features in a brute force manner without explicit guidance. In this paper, we integrate multi-modal information in an explicit manner by tagging, and use the tags as the anchors for better video-text alignment. Various pretrained experts are utilized for extracting the information of multiple modalities, including object, person, motion, audio, etc. To take full advantage of these information, we propose the TABLE (TAgging Before aLignmEnt) network, which consists of a visual encoder, a tag encoder, a text encoder, and a tag-guiding cross-modal encoder for jointly encoding multi-frame visual features and multi-modal tags information. Furthermore, to strengthen the interaction between video and text, we build a joint cross-modal encoder with the triplet input of [vision, tag, text] and perform two additional supervised tasks, Video Text Matching (VTM) and Masked Language Modeling (MLM). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the TABLE model is capable of achieving State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) performance on various video-text retrieval benchmarks, including MSR-VTT, MSVD, LSMDC and DiDeMo.

Deep learning numerical methods for high-dimensional fully nonlinear PIDEs and coupled FBSDEs with jumps

We propose a deep learning algorithm for solving high-dimensional parabolic integro-differential equations (PIDEs) and high-dimensional forward-backward stochastic differential equations with jumps (FBSDEJs), where the jump-diffusion process are derived by a Brownian motion and an independent compensated Poisson random measure. In this novel algorithm, a pair of deep neural networks for the approximations of the gradient and the integral kernel is introduced in a crucial way based on deep FBSDE method. To derive the error estimates for this deep learning algorithm, the convergence of Markovian iteration, the error bound of Euler time discretization, and the simulation error of deep learning algorithm are investigated. Two numerical examples are provided to show the efficiency of this proposed algorithm.

Significant Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect in Heavy Metal/Antiferromagnetic Insulator Heterostructures

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, we report that an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 n$Ω$ cm. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non-zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski-Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field.

FEASTS: IGM cooling triggered by tidal interactions through the diffuse HI phase around NGC 4631

We use the single-dish radio telescope FAST to map the HI in the tidally interacting NGC 4631 group with a resolution of 3.24$'$ (7 kpc), reaching a 5-$σ$ column density limit of $10^{17.9}$ cm$^{-2}$ assuming a line width of 20 km s$^{-1}$. Taking the existing interferometric HI image from the HALOGAS project of WSRT as reference, we are able to identify and characterize a significant excess of large-scale, low-density, and diffuse HI in the group. This diffuse HI extends for more than 120 kpc across, and accounts for more than one fourth of the total HI detected by FAST in and around the galaxy NGC 4631. In the region of the tidal tails, the diffuse HI has a typical column density above $10^{19.5}$ cm$^{-2}$, and is highly turbulent with a velocity dispersion around 50 km s$^{-1}$. It increases in column density with the dense HI, and tends to be associated with the kinematically ``hotter'' part of the dense HI. Through simple modeling, we find that the majority of the diffuse HI in the tail region is likely to induce cooling out of the hot IGM instead of evaporating or being radiatively ionized. Given these relations of gas in different phases, the diffuse HI may represent a condensing phase of the IGM. Active tidal interactions on-going and in the past may have produced the wide-spreading HI distribution, and triggered the gas accretion to NGC 4631 through the phase of the diffuse HI.

Designer Meron Lattice on the Surface of a Topological Insulator

We present a promising route to realize spontaneous magnetic order on the surface of a 3D topological insulator by applying a superlattice potential. The superlattice potential creates tunable van Hove singularities, which, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb repulsion give rise to a topological meron lattice spin texture. The periodicity of this designer meron lattice can be tuned by varying the periodicity of the superlattice potential. We characterize the magnetic order using Ginzburg-Landau theory and show that the magnetic transition temperature reaches experimentally accessible values. Our work introduces a new direction to realize exotic quantum order by engineering interacting Dirac electrons in a superlattice potential, with promising applications to spintronics.

Two Measure is Two Know: Calibration-free Full Duplex Monitoring for Software Radio Platforms

Future virtualized radio access network (vRAN) infrastructure providers (and today's experimental wireless testbed providers) may be simultaneously uncertain what signals are being transmitted by their base stations and legally responsible for their violations. These providers must monitor the spectrum of transmissions and external signals without access to the radio itself. In this paper, we propose FDMonitor, a full-duplex monitoring system attached between a transmitter and its antenna to achieve this goal. Measuring the signal at this point on the RF path is necessary but insufficient since the antenna is a bidirectional device. FDMonitor thus uses a bidirectional coupler, a two-channel receiver, and a new source separation algorithm to simultaneously estimate the transmitted signal and the signal incident on the antenna. Rather than requiring an offline calibration, we also adaptively estimate the linear model for the system on the fly. FDMonitor has been running on a real-world open wireless testbed, monitoring 19 SDR platforms controlled (with bare metal access) by outside experimenters over a seven month period, sending alerts whenever a violation is observed. Our experimental results show that FDMonitor accurately separates signals across a range of signal parameters. Over more than 7 months of observation, it achieves a positive predictive value of 97%, with a total of 20 false alerts.

Efficient Exploration in Resource-Restricted Reinforcement Learning

In many real-world applications of reinforcement learning (RL), performing actions requires consuming certain types of resources that are non-replenishable in each episode. Typical applications include robotic control with limited energy and video games with consumable items. In tasks with non-replenishable resources, we observe that popular RL methods such as soft actor critic suffer from poor sample efficiency. The major reason is that, they tend to exhaust resources fast and thus the subsequent exploration is severely restricted due to the absence of resources. To address this challenge, we first formalize the aforementioned problem as a resource-restricted reinforcement learning, and then propose a novel resource-aware exploration bonus (RAEB) to make reasonable usage of resources. An appealing feature of RAEB is that, it can significantly reduce unnecessary resource-consuming trials while effectively encouraging the agent to explore unvisited states. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed RAEB significantly outperforms state-of-the-art exploration strategies in resource-restricted reinforcement learning environments, improving the sample efficiency by up to an order of magnitude.

Recycling of Perovskite Substrate

The use of water-soluble sacrificial layer of Sr$_3$Al$_2$O$_6$ has tremendously boosted the research on freestanding functional oxide thin films, especially thanks to its ultimate capability to produce high-quality epitaxial perovskite thin films. However, the costly single-crystalline substrates, e.g. SrTiO$_3$, were generally discarded after obtaining the freestanding thin films. Here, we demonstrate that the SrTiO$_3$ substrates can be recycled to fabricate La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films with nearly identical structural and electrical properties. After attaining freestanding thin films, the residues on SrTiO$_3$ can be removed by 80 \degree C hot water soaking and rinsing treatments. Consequently, the surface of SrTiO$_3$ reverted to its original step-and-terrace structure.

Flow Rate Independent Multiscale Liquid Biopsy for Precision Oncology

Immunoaffinity-based liquid biopsies of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hold great promise for cancer management, but typically suffer from low throughput, relative complexity and post-processing limitations. Here we address these issues simultaneously by decoupling and independently optimizing the nano-, micro- and macro-scales of an enrichment device that is simple to fabricate and operate. Unlike other affinity-based devices, our scalable mesh approach enables optimum capture conditions at any flow rate, as demonstrated with constant capture efficiencies, above 75% between 50-200 uL/min. The device achieved 96% sensitivity and 100% specificity when used to detect CTCs in the blood of 79 cancer patients and 20 healthy controls. We demonstrate its post processing capacity with the identification of potential responders to immune checkpoint inhibition therapy and the detection of HER2 positive breast cancer. The results compare well with other assays, including clinical standards. This suggests that our approach, which overcomes major limitations associated with affinity-based liquid biopsies, could help improve cancer management.

Tunable Stripe Order and Weak Superconductivity in the Moiré Hubbard Model

The moiré Hubbard model describes correlations in certain homobilayer twisted transition metal dichalcogenides. Using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we find magnetic Mott insulating and metallic phases, which, upon doping exhibit intertwined charge and spin ordering and, in some regimes, pair binding of holes. The phases are highly tunable via an interlayer potential difference. Remarkably, the hole binding energy is found to be highly tunable revealing an experimentally accessible regime where holes become attractive. In this attractive regime, we study the superconducting correlation function and point out the possibility of weak superconductivity.

Reliable Off-policy Evaluation for Reinforcement Learning

In a sequential decision-making problem, off-policy evaluation estimates the expected cumulative reward of a target policy using logged trajectory data generated from a different behavior policy, without execution of the target policy. Reinforcement learning in high-stake environments, such as healthcare and education, is often limited to off-policy settings due to safety or ethical concerns, or inability of exploration. Hence it is imperative to quantify the uncertainty of the off-policy estimate before deployment of the target policy. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that provides robust and optimistic cumulative reward estimates using one or multiple logged trajectories data. Leveraging methodologies from distributionally robust optimization, we show that with proper selection of the size of the distributional uncertainty set, these estimates serve as confidence bounds with non-asymptotic and asymptotic guarantees under stochastic or adversarial environments. Our results are also generalized to batch reinforcement learning and are supported by empirical analysis.

WeKws: A production first small-footprint end-to-end Keyword Spotting Toolkit

Keyword spotting (KWS) enables speech-based user interaction and gradually becomes an indispensable component of smart devices. Recently, end-to-end (E2E) methods have become the most popular approach for on-device KWS tasks. However, there is still a gap between the research and deployment of E2E KWS methods. In this paper, we introduce WeKws, a production-quality, easy-to-build, and convenient-to-be-applied E2E KWS toolkit. WeKws contains the implementations of several state-of-the-art backbone networks, making it achieve highly competitive results on three publicly available datasets. To make WeKws a pure E2E toolkit, we utilize a refined max-pooling loss to make the model learn the ending position of the keyword by itself, which significantly simplifies the training pipeline and makes WeKws very efficient to be applied in real-world scenarios. The toolkit is publicly available at https://github.com/wenet-e2e/wekws.

Real space representation of topological system: twisted bilayer graphene as an example

We construct a Wannier basis for twisted bilayer graphene that is projected only from the Bloch functions of the twisted bilayer flat bands. The $C_3$ and $C_{2} \mathcal{T}$ symmetries act locally on the Wannier functions while the Wannier function charge density is strongly peaked at the triangular sites and becomes fully sublattice-polarized in the chiral limit. The Wannier functions have a power-law tail, due to the topological obstruction, but most of the charge density is concentrated within one unit cell so that the on-site local Coulomb interaction is much larger than the further neighbor interactions and in general the Hamiltonian parameters may be accurately estimated from a modest number of Wannier functions. One exception is the momentum space components of the single-particle Hamiltonian, where because of the topological obstruction convergence is non-uniform across the Brillouin zone. We observe, however, that mixed position and momentum space representations may be used to avoid this difficulty in the context of quantum embedding methods. Our work provides a new route to study systems with topological obstructions and paves the way for the future investigation of correlated states in twisted bilayer graphene, including studies of non-integer fillings and temperature dependence.

Origin of Model Fractional Chern Insulators in All Topological Ideal Flatbands: Explicit Color-entangled Wavefunction and Exact Density Algebra

It is commonly believed that nonuniform Berry curvature destroys the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra and as a consequence destabilizes fractional Chern insulators. In this work we disprove this common lore by presenting a theory for all topological ideal flatbands with nonzero Chern number C. The smooth single-particle Bloch wavefunction is proved to admit an exact color-entangled form as a superposition of C lowest Landau level type wavefunctions distinguished by boundary conditions. Including repulsive interactions, Abelian and non-Abelian model fractional Chern insulators of Halperin type are stabilized as exact zero-energy ground states no matter how nonuniform Berry curvature is, as long as the quantum geometry is ideal and the repulsion is short-ranged. The key reason behind is the existence of an emergent Hilbert space in which Berry curvature can be exactly flattened by adjusting wavefunction's normalization. In such space, the flatband-projected density operator obeys a closed Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman type algebra, making exact mapping to C-layered Landau levels possible. In the end we discuss applications of the theory to moire flatband systems with a particular focus on the fractionalized phase and spontaneous symmetry breaking phase recently observed in graphene based twisted materials.
