Distinguishing general relativity and $f(R)$ gravity with the gravitational lensing Minkowski functionals

We explore the Minkowski functionals of weak lensing convergence map to distinguish between $f(R)$ gravity and the general relativity (GR). The mock weak lensing convergence maps are constructed with a set of high-resolution simulations assuming different gravity models. It is shown that the lensing MFs of $f(R)$ gravity can be considerably different from that of GR because of the environmentally dependent enhancement of structure formation. We also investigate the effect of lensing noise on our results, and find that it is likely to distinguish F5, F6 and GR gravity models with a galaxy survey of $\sim3000$ degree$^2$ and with a background source number density of $n_g=30~{\rm arcmin}^{-2}$, comparable to an upcoming survey dark energy survey (DES). We also find that the $f(R)$ signal can be partially degenerate with the effect of changing cosmology, but combined use of other observations, such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, can help break this degeneracy.

On $Q$-Tensors

One of the central problems in the theory of linear complementarity problems (LCPs) is to study the class of $Q$-matrices since it characterizes the solvability of LCP. Recently, the concept of $Q$-matrix has been extended to the case of tensor, called $Q$-tensor, which characterizes the solvability of the corresponding tensor complementarity problem -- a generalization of LCP; and some basic results related to $Q$-tensors have been obtained in the literature. In this paper, we extend two famous results related to $Q$-matrices to the tensor space, i.e., we show that within the class of strong $P_0$-tensors or nonnegative tensors, four classes of tensors, i.e., $R_0$-tensors, $R$-tensors, $ER$-tensors and $Q$-tensors, are all equivalent. We also construct several examples to show that three famous results related to $Q$-matrices cannot be extended to the tensor space; and one of which gives a negative answer to a question raised recently by Song and Qi.

SPEC application for achieving inelastic X-ray scattering experiment in the SSRF

In order to carry out inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) experiment at BL15U1 beamline of Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), the data acquisition and control system based on SPEC software has been developed. The IXS experimental method needs linkage control of monochromator, silicon drift detector (SDD) and ionization chamber on continuous segment-scan mode with variable step size, and gains the data of energy, spectrum and light intensity synchronously. A method is presented for achieving this function which was not realized only by using SSCAN of Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). This paper shows work details including control system description, SPEC configurations for EPICS devices, macro definitions and applications in the BL15U1. An IXS experiment was executed by using the SPEC control system, its results prove that the method is feasible to perform the experiment.

Research on the secondary electron yield of tizrv-pd thin film coatings

In particle accelerators, the build-up of electron cloud may have important influence on beam quality. Especially for the positron and proton accelerators, massive electrons lead to electron cloud, which affects the stability, energy, emittance and beam life adversely. A secondary electron emission (SEE) measurement system has been designed and used to study the SEE of palladium (Pd), TiZrV and TiZrV-Pd with an independently adjustable energy from 50 eV to 5 keV. Here, we obtained the characteristics of the SEE from Pd, TiZrV and TiZrV-Pd film coatings with different thickness under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions. Moreover, the maximum secondary electron yield (SEY), δmax, of the Pd, TiZrV and TiZrV-Pd film coatings under different primary electron doses were obtained, respectively. Finally, the variation of the secondary electron yield with the incident electron energy will be discussed for Pd, TiZrV and TiZrV-Pd thin film coatings. Low SEY is a new advantage of TiZrV-Pd films, besides high H2 absorption ability and prolonging the lifetime of TiZrV film, which will be of great value in the design of beam screen for Super Proton-Proton Collider (SPPC).

Concept for a Future Super Proton-Proton Collider

Following the discovery of the Higgs boson at LHC, new large colliders are being studied by the international high-energy community to explore Higgs physics in detail and new physics beyond the Standard Model. In China, a two-stage circular collider project CEPC-SPPC is proposed, with the first stage CEPC (Circular Electron Positron Collier, a so-called Higgs factory) focused on Higgs physics, and the second stage SPPC (Super Proton-Proton Collider) focused on new physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper discusses this second stage.

Research on Pd film deposition rate calculation and simulation based on TiZrV/Pd film coating experiment

The vacuum chamber of accelerator storage ring need clean ultra-high vacuum environment. TiZrV getter film which was deposited on interior wall of vacuum chamber, can realize distributed pumping, effectively improve the vacuum degree and reduce the longitudinal gradient. But accumulation of pollutants such as N2, O2, will decrease the adsorption ability of non-evaporable getter (NEG), which leads to the reduction of NEG lifetime. Therefore, NEG thin film coated with a layer of Pd which has high diffusion rate and absorption ability for H2, can extend the service life of NEG, and improve the pumping rate of H2 at the same time. With argon as discharge gas, magnetron sputtering method was adopted to prepare TiZrV-Pd film in long straight pipe. According to the experimental results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), deposition rates of TiZrV-Pd films were analyzed under different deposition parameters, the magnetic field strength, the gas flow rate, discharge current, discharge voltage and working pressure. Moreover, comparing the simulation results based on Sigmund's theory and experimental results, it was shown that the deposition rate C can be estimated by the depth sputtered, D for Pd film coatings in this experiment device.

Safe Screening for Multi-Task Feature Learning with Multiple Data Matrices

Multi-task feature learning (MTFL) is a powerful technique in boosting the predictive performance by learning multiple related classification/regression/clustering tasks simultaneously. However, solving the MTFL problem remains challenging when the feature dimension is extremely large. In this paper, we propose a novel screening rule---that is based on the dual projection onto convex sets (DPC)---to quickly identify the inactive features---that have zero coefficients in the solution vectors across all tasks. One of the appealing features of DPC is that: it is safe in the sense that the detected inactive features are guaranteed to have zero coefficients in the solution vectors across all tasks. Thus, by removing the inactive features from the training phase, we may have substantial savings in the computational cost and memory usage without sacrificing accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first screening rule that is applicable to sparse models with multiple data matrices. A key challenge in deriving DPC is to solve a nonconvex problem. We show that we can solve for the global optimum efficiently via a properly chosen parametrization of the constraint set. Moreover, DPC has very low computational cost and can be integrated with any existing solvers. We have evaluated the proposed DPC rule on both synthetic and real data sets. The experiments indicate that DPC is very effective in identifying the inactive features---especially for high dimensional data---which leads to a speedup up to several orders of magnitude.

Deposition and characterization of TiZrV-Pd thin films by dc magnetron sputtering

TiZrV film is mainly applied in the ultra-high vacuum pipe of storage ring. Thin film coatings of palladium which was added onto the TiZrV film to increase the service life of nonevaporable getters and enhance pumping speed for H2, was deposited on the inner face of stainless steel pipes by dc magnetron sputtering using argon gas as the sputtering gas. The TiZrV-Pd film properties were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The grain size of TiZrV and Pd film were about 0.42~1.3 nm and 8.5~18.25 nm respectively. It was found that the roughness of TiZrV films was small, about 2~4 nm, for Pd film it is large, about 17~19 nm. PP At. % of Pd in TiZrV/Pd films varied from 86.84 to 87.56 according to the XPS test results.

Simulation of proton radiography terminal at IMP

Proton radiography is used for advanced hydrotesting as a new type radiography technology due to its powerful penetration capability and high detection efficiency. A new proton radiography terminal will be developed to radiograph static samples at Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Science (IMP-CAS). The proton beam with the maximum energy of 2.6 GeV will be produced by Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou-Cooling Storage Ring (HIRFL-CSR). The proton radiography terminal consists of the matching magnetic lens and the Zumbro lens system. In this paper, the design scheme and all optic parameters of this beam terminal for 2.6GeV proton energy are presented by simulating the beam optics using WINAGILE code. My-BOC code is used to test the particle tracking of proton radiography beam line. Geant4 code and G4beamline code are used for simulating the proton radiography system. The results show that the transmission efficiency of proton without target is 100%, and the effect of secondary particles can be neglected. In order to test this proton radiography system, the proton images for an aluminum plate sample with two rectangular orifices and a step brass plate sample are respectively simulated using Geant4 code. The results show that the best spatial resolution is about 36μm, and the differences of the thickness is not greater than 10%.

How well can cold-dark-matter substructures account for the observed radio flux-ratio anomalies?

Discrepancies between the observed and model-predicted radio flux ratios are seen in a number of quadruply-lensed quasars. The most favored interpretation of these anomalies is that CDM substructures present in lensing galaxies perturb the lens potentials and alter image magnifications and thus flux ratios. So far no consensus has emerged regarding whether or not the predicted CDM substructure abundance fully accounts for the lensing flux anomaly observations. Accurate modeling relies on a realistic lens sample in terms of both the lens environment and internal structures and substructures. In this paper we construct samples of generalised and specific lens potentials, to which we add (rescaled) subhalo populations from the galaxy-scale Aquarius and the cluster-scale Phoenix simulation suites. We further investigate the lensing effects from subhalos of masses several orders of magnitude below the simulation resolution limit. The resulting flux ratio distributions are compared to the currently best available sample of radio lenses. The observed anomalies in B0128+437, B0712+472 and B1555+375 are more likely to be caused by propagation effects or oversimplified lens modeling, signs of which are already seen in the data. Among the quadruple systems that have closely located image triplets/pairs, the anomalous flux ratios of MG0414+0534 can be reproduced by adding CDM subhalos to its macroscopic lens potential, with a probability of 5%-20%; for B0712+472, B1422+231, B1555+375 and B2045+265, these probabilities are only of a few percent. We hence find that CDM substructures are unlikely to be the whole reason for radio flux anomalies. We discuss other possible effects that might also be at work.

How well can cold-dark-matter substructures account for the observed lensing flux-ratio anomalies?

Lensing flux-ratio anomalies are most likely caused by gravitational lensing by small-scale dark matter structures. These anomalies offer the prospect of testing a fundamental prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model: the existence of numerous substructures that are too small to host visible galaxies. In two previous studies we found that the number of subhalos in the six high-resolution simulations of CDM galactic halos of the Aquarius project is not sufficient to account for the observed frequency of flux ratio anomalies seen in selected quasars from the CLASS survey. These studies were limited by the small number of halos used, their narrow range of masses (1-2E12 solar masses) and the small range of lens ellipticities considered. We address these shortcomings by investigating the lensing properties of a large sample of halos with a wide range of masses in two sets of high resolution simulations of cosmological volumes and comparing them to a currently best available sample of radio quasars. We find that, as expected, substructures do not change the flux-ratio probability distribution of image pairs and triples with large separations, but they have a significant effect on the distribution at small separations. For such systems, CDM substructures can account for a substantial fraction of the observed flux-ratio anomalies. For large close-pair separation systems, the discrepancies existing between the observed flux ratios and predictions from smooth halo models are attributed to simplifications inherent in these models which do not take account of fine details in the lens mass distributions.

Study on the unfolding algorithm for D-T neutron energy spectra measurement using recoil proton method

A proton recoil method for measuring D-T neutron energy spectra using polyethylene film and Si (Au) surface barrier detector was presented. An iteration algorithm for unfolding the recoil proton energy spectrum to the neutron energy spectrum was investigated. The response matrixes R of polyethylene film at 0 degree and 45 degree were obtained by simulating the recoil proton energy spectra from the mono-energetic neutron using MCNP code. Under an assumed D-T neutron spectrum, the recoil proton spectra from polyethylene film at 0 degree and 45 degree were also simulated using MCNP code. Based on the response matrixes R and the simulated recoil proton spectra at 0 degree and 45 degree, the unfolded neutron spectra were respectively obtained using the iteration algorithm, and compared with the assumed neutron spectrum. The results show that the iteration algorithm method can be applied to unfold the recoil proton energy spectrum to the neutron energy spectrum for D-T neutron energy spectra measurement using recoil proton method.

Lasso Screening Rules via Dual Polytope Projection

Lasso is a widely used regression technique to find sparse representations. When the dimension of the feature space and the number of samples are extremely large, solving the Lasso problem remains challenging. To improve the efficiency of solving large-scale Lasso problems, El Ghaoui and his colleagues have proposed the SAFE rules which are able to quickly identify the inactive predictors, i.e., predictors that have $0$ components in the solution vector. Then, the inactive predictors or features can be removed from the optimization problem to reduce its scale. By transforming the standard Lasso to its dual form, it can be shown that the inactive predictors include the set of inactive constraints on the optimal dual solution. In this paper, we propose an efficient and effective screening rule via Dual Polytope Projections (DPP), which is mainly based on the uniqueness and nonexpansiveness of the optimal dual solution due to the fact that the feasible set in the dual space is a convex and closed polytope. Moreover, we show that our screening rule can be extended to identify inactive groups in group Lasso. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no "exact" screening rule for group Lasso. We have evaluated our screening rule using synthetic and real data sets. Results show that our rule is more effective in identifying inactive predictors than existing state-of-the-art screening rules for Lasso.

Two-Layer Feature Reduction for Sparse-Group Lasso via Decomposition of Convex Sets

Sparse-Group Lasso (SGL) has been shown to be a powerful regression technique for simultaneously discovering group and within-group sparse patterns by using a combination of the $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ norms. However, in large-scale applications, the complexity of the regularizers entails great computational challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel Two-Layer Feature REduction method (TLFre) for SGL via a decomposition of its dual feasible set. The two-layer reduction is able to quickly identify the inactive groups and the inactive features, respectively, which are guaranteed to be absent from the sparse representation and can be removed from the optimization. Existing feature reduction methods are only applicable for sparse models with one sparsity-inducing regularizer. To our best knowledge, TLFre is the first one that is capable of dealing with multiple sparsity-inducing regularizers. Moreover, TLFre has a very low computational cost and can be integrated with any existing solvers. We also develop a screening method---called DPC (DecomPosition of Convex set)---for the nonnegative Lasso problem. Experiments on both synthetic and real data sets show that TLFre and DPC improve the efficiency of SGL and nonnegative Lasso by several orders of magnitude.
