UniFL: Improve Latent Diffusion Model via Unified Feedback Learning

Latent diffusion models (LDM) have revolutionized text-to-image generation, leading to the proliferation of various advanced models and diverse downstream applications. However, despite these significant advancements, current diffusion models still suffer from several limitations, including inferior visual quality, inadequate aesthetic appeal, and inefficient inference, without a comprehensive solution in sight. To address these challenges, we present UniFL, a unified framework that leverages feedback learning to enhance diffusion models comprehensively. UniFL stands out as a universal, effective, and generalizable solution applicable to various diffusion models, such as SD1.5 and SDXL. Notably, UniFL consists of three key components: perceptual feedback learning, which enhances visual quality; decoupled feedback learning, which improves aesthetic appeal; and adversarial feedback learning, which accelerates inference. In-depth experiments and extensive user studies validate the superior performance of our method in enhancing generation quality and inference acceleration. For instance, UniFL surpasses ImageReward by 17% user preference in terms of generation quality and outperforms LCM and SDXL Turbo by 57% and 20% general preference with 4-step inference.

Multiscale Jones Polynomial and Persistent Jones Polynomial for Knot Data Analysis

Many structures in science, engineering, and art can be viewed as curves in 3-space. The entanglement of these curves plays a crucial role in determining the functionality and physical properties of materials. Many concepts in knot theory provide theoretical tools to explore the complexity and entanglement of curves in 3-space. However, classical knot theory primarily focuses on global topological properties and lacks the consideration of local structural information, which is critical in practical applications. In this work, two localized models based on the Jones polynomial, namely the multiscale Jones polynomial and the persistent Jones polynomial, are proposed. The stability of these models, especially the insensitivity of the multiscale and persistent Jones polynomial models to small perturbations in curve collections, is analyzed, thus ensuring their robustness for real-world applications.

LayoutDiT: Exploring Content-Graphic Balance in Layout Generation with Diffusion Transformer

Layout generation is a foundation task of graphic design, which requires the integration of visual aesthetics and harmonious expression of content delivery. However, existing methods still face challenges in generating precise and visually appealing layouts, including blocking, overlapping, small-sized, or spatial misalignment. We found that these methods overlook the crucial balance between learning content-aware and graphic-aware features. This oversight results in their limited ability to model the graphic structure of layouts and generate reasonable layout arrangements. To address these challenges, we introduce LayoutDiT, an effective framework that balances content and graphic features to generate high-quality, visually appealing layouts. Specifically, we first design an adaptive factor that optimizes the model's awareness of the layout generation space, balancing the model's performance in both content and graphic aspects. Secondly, we introduce a graphic condition, the saliency bounding box, to bridge the modality difference between images in the visual domain and layouts in the geometric parameter domain. In addition, we adapt a diffusion transformer model as the backbone, whose powerful generative capability ensures the quality of layout generation. Benefiting from the properties of diffusion models, our method excels in constrained settings without introducing additional constraint modules. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance in both constrained and unconstrained settings, significantly outperforming existing methods.

ControlNet++: Improving Conditional Controls with Efficient Consistency Feedback

To enhance the controllability of text-to-image diffusion models, existing efforts like ControlNet incorporated image-based conditional controls. In this paper, we reveal that existing methods still face significant challenges in generating images that align with the image conditional controls. To this end, we propose ControlNet++, a novel approach that improves controllable generation by explicitly optimizing pixel-level cycle consistency between generated images and conditional controls. Specifically, for an input conditional control, we use a pre-trained discriminative reward model to extract the corresponding condition of the generated images, and then optimize the consistency loss between the input conditional control and extracted condition. A straightforward implementation would be generating images from random noises and then calculating the consistency loss, but such an approach requires storing gradients for multiple sampling timesteps, leading to considerable time and memory costs. To address this, we introduce an efficient reward strategy that deliberately disturbs the input images by adding noise, and then uses the single-step denoised images for reward fine-tuning. This avoids the extensive costs associated with image sampling, allowing for more efficient reward fine-tuning. Extensive experiments show that ControlNet++ significantly improves controllability under various conditional controls. For example, it achieves improvements over ControlNet by 11.1% mIoU, 13.4% SSIM, and 7.6% RMSE, respectively, for segmentation mask, line-art edge, and depth conditions. All the code, models, demo and organized data have been open sourced on our Github Repo.

Spatio-temporal cooperative control Method of Highway Ramp Merge Based on Vehicle-road Coordination

The merging area of highway ramps faces multiple challenges, including traffic congestion, collision risks, speed mismatches, driver behavior uncertainties, limited visibility, and bottleneck effects. However, autonomous vehicles engaging in depth coordination between vehicle and road in merging zones, by pre-planning and uploading travel trajectories, can significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of merging zones. In this paper,we mainly introduce mainline priority cooperation method to achieve the time and space cooperative control of highway merge.Vehicle-mounted intelligent units share real-time vehicle status and driving intentions with Road Section Management Units, which pre-plan the spatiotemporal trajectories of vehicle travel. After receiving these trajectories, Vehicle Intelligent Units strictly adhere to them. Through this deep collaboration between vehicles and roads, conflicts in time and space during vehicle travel are eliminated in advance.

Hyper-SD: Trajectory Segmented Consistency Model for Efficient Image Synthesis

Recently, a series of diffusion-aware distillation algorithms have emerged to alleviate the computational overhead associated with the multi-step inference process of Diffusion Models (DMs). Current distillation techniques often dichotomize into two distinct aspects: i) ODE Trajectory Preservation; and ii) ODE Trajectory Reformulation. However, these approaches suffer from severe performance degradation or domain shifts. To address these limitations, we propose Hyper-SD, a novel framework that synergistically amalgamates the advantages of ODE Trajectory Preservation and Reformulation, while maintaining near-lossless performance during step compression. Firstly, we introduce Trajectory Segmented Consistency Distillation to progressively perform consistent distillation within pre-defined time-step segments, which facilitates the preservation of the original ODE trajectory from a higher-order perspective. Secondly, we incorporate human feedback learning to boost the performance of the model in a low-step regime and mitigate the performance loss incurred by the distillation process. Thirdly, we integrate score distillation to further improve the low-step generation capability of the model and offer the first attempt to leverage a unified LoRA to support the inference process at all steps. Extensive experiments and user studies demonstrate that Hyper-SD achieves SOTA performance from 1 to 8 inference steps for both SDXL and SD1.5. For example, Hyper-SDXL surpasses SDXL-Lightning by +0.68 in CLIP Score and +0.51 in Aes Score in the 1-step inference.

Prospects of constraining on the polarizations of gravitational waves from binary black holes using space- and ground-based detectors

The theory of general relativity (GR) predicts the existence of gravitational waves (GWs) with two tensor modes, while alternative theories propose up to six polarization modes. In this study, we investigate constraints on GW polarization using a model-independent parametrized post-Einsteinian framework and consider both space- and ground-based detectors. By evaluating the capabilities and network performance of LISA, Taiji, TianQin, LIGO, Virgo, KAGRA, and the Einstein Telescope (ET), we analyze their respective contributions. Among space-based detectors, Taiji provides the most stringent constraints compared with LISA and TianQin.Regarding ground-based detectors, LIGO excels in vector modes while ET offers comprehensive constraints across all polarization modes. In network scenarios, LISA+TJm performs best, and ET surpasses second-generation detector combinations. Furthermore, multiband observations effectively mitigate scalar mode degeneracies thereby significantly enhancing the performance of ground-based detectors. Ultimately, combined space- and ground-based observations provide robust constraints on GW polarizations that advance tests for deviations from GR. Our findings underscore the potential of future GW missions in refining our understanding of gravitational physics through precise measurements of polarizations.

Moyennes de certaines fonctions multiplicatives sur les entiers friables, 3

We consider logarithmic averages, over friable integers, of non-negative multiplicative functions. Under logarithmic, one-sided or two-sided hypotheses, we obtain sharp estimates that improve upon known results in the literature regarding both the quality of the error term and the range of validity. The one-sided hypotheses correspond to classical sieve assumptions. They are applied to provide an effective form of the Johnsen--Selberg prime power sieve.

FedVeca: Federated Vectorized Averaging on Non-IID Data with Adaptive Bi-directional Global Objective

Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning framework to alleviate the data silos, where decentralized clients collaboratively learn a global model without sharing their private data. However, the clients' Non-Independent and Identically Distributed (Non-IID) data negatively affect the trained model, and clients with different numbers of local updates may cause significant gaps to the local gradients in each communication round. In this paper, we propose a Federated Vectorized Averaging (FedVeca) method to address the above problem on Non-IID data. Specifically, we set a novel objective for the global model which is related to the local gradients. The local gradient is defined as a bi-directional vector with step size and direction, where the step size is the number of local updates and the direction is divided into positive and negative according to our definition. In FedVeca, the direction is influenced by the step size, thus we average the bi-directional vectors to reduce the effect of different step sizes. Then, we theoretically analyze the relationship between the step sizes and the global objective, and obtain upper bounds on the step sizes per communication round. Based on the upper bounds, we design an algorithm for the server and the client to adaptively adjusts the step sizes that make the objective close to the optimum. Finally, we conduct experiments on different datasets, models and scenarios by building a prototype system, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the FedVeca method.

What are the limits of cross-lingual dense passage retrieval for low-resource languages?

In this paper, we analyze the capabilities of the multi-lingual Dense Passage Retriever (mDPR) for extremely low-resource languages. In the Cross-lingual Open-Retrieval Answer Generation (CORA) pipeline, mDPR achieves success on multilingual open QA benchmarks across 26 languages, of which 9 were unseen during training. These results are promising for Question Answering (QA) for low-resource languages. We focus on two extremely low-resource languages for which mDPR performs poorly: Amharic and Khmer. We collect and curate datasets to train mDPR models using Translation Language Modeling (TLM) and question--passage alignment. We also investigate the effect of our extension on the language distribution in the retrieval results. Our results on the MKQA and AmQA datasets show that language alignment brings improvements to mDPR for the low-resource languages, but the improvements are modest and the results remain low. We conclude that fulfilling CORA's promise to enable multilingual open QA in extremely low-resource settings is challenging because the model, the data, and the evaluation approach are intertwined. Hence, all three need attention in follow-up work. We release our code for reproducibility and future work: https://anonymous.4open.science/r/Question-Answering-for-Low-Resource-Languages-B13C/

Control-A-Video: Controllable Text-to-Video Diffusion Models with Motion Prior and Reward Feedback Learning

Recent advances in text-to-image (T2I) diffusion models have enabled impressive image generation capabilities guided by text prompts. However, extending these techniques to video generation remains challenging, with existing text-to-video (T2V) methods often struggling to produce high-quality and motion-consistent videos. In this work, we introduce Control-A-Video, a controllable T2V diffusion model that can generate videos conditioned on text prompts and reference control maps like edge and depth maps. To tackle video quality and motion consistency issues, we propose novel strategies to incorporate content prior and motion prior into the diffusion-based generation process. Specifically, we employ a first-frame condition scheme to transfer video generation from the image domain. Additionally, we introduce residual-based and optical flow-based noise initialization to infuse motion priors from reference videos, promoting relevance among frame latents for reduced flickering. Furthermore, we present a Spatio-Temporal Reward Feedback Learning (ST-ReFL) algorithm that optimizes the video diffusion model using multiple reward models for video quality and motion consistency, leading to superior outputs. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our framework generates higher-quality, more consistent videos compared to existing state-of-the-art methods in controllable text-to-video generation

FuXi-ENS: A machine learning model for medium-range ensemble weather forecasting

Ensemble forecasting is crucial for improving weather predictions, especially for forecasts of extreme events. Constructing an ensemble prediction system (EPS) based on conventional NWP models is highly computationally expensive. ML models have emerged as valuable tools for deterministic weather forecasts, providing forecasts with significantly reduced computational requirements and even surpassing the forecast performance of traditional NWP models. However, challenges arise when applying ML models to ensemble forecasting. Recent ML models, such as GenCast and SEEDS model, rely on the ERA5 EDA or operational NWP ensemble members for forecast generation. Their spatial resolution is also considered too coarse for many applications. To overcome these limitations, we introduce FuXi-ENS, an advanced ML model designed to deliver 6-hourly global ensemble weather forecasts up to 15 days. This model runs at a significantly increased spatial resolution of 0.25\textdegree, incorporating 5 atmospheric variables at 13 pressure levels, along with 13 surface variables. By leveraging the inherent probabilistic nature of Variational AutoEncoder (VAE), FuXi-ENS optimizes a loss function that combines the CRPS and the KL divergence between the predicted and target distribution, facilitating the incorporation of flow-dependent perturbations in both initial conditions and forecast. This innovative approach makes FuXi-ENS an advancement over the traditional ones that use L1 loss combined with the KL loss in standard VAE models for ensemble weather forecasting. Results demonstrate that FuXi-ENS outperforms ensemble forecasts from the ECMWF, a world leading NWP model, in the CRPS of 98.1% of 360 variable and forecast lead time combinations. This achievement underscores the potential of the FuXi-ENS model to enhance ensemble weather forecasts, offering a promising direction for further development in this field.

Grounding Language Models for Visual Entity Recognition

We introduce AutoVER, an Autoregressive model for Visual Entity Recognition. Our model extends an autoregressive Multi-modal Large Language Model by employing retrieval augmented constrained generation. It mitigates low performance on out-of-domain entities while excelling in queries that require visually-situated reasoning. Our method learns to distinguish similar entities within a vast label space by contrastively training on hard negative pairs in parallel with a sequence-to-sequence objective without an external retriever. During inference, a list of retrieved candidate answers explicitly guides language generation by removing invalid decoding paths. The proposed method achieves significant improvements across different dataset splits in the recently proposed Oven-Wiki benchmark. Accuracy on the Entity seen split rises from 32.7% to 61.5%. It also demonstrates superior performance on the unseen and query splits by a substantial double-digit margin.

Step-Back Profiling: Distilling User History for Personalized Scientific Writing

Large language models (LLM) excel at a variety of natural language processing tasks, yet they struggle to generate personalized content for individuals, particularly in real-world scenarios like scientific writing. Addressing this challenge, we introduce STEP-BACK PROFILING to personalize LLMs by distilling user history into concise profiles, including essential traits and preferences of users. To conduct the experiments, we construct a Personalized Scientific Writing (PSW) dataset to study multi-user personalization. PSW requires the models to write scientific papers given specialized author groups with diverse academic backgrounds. As for the results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of capturing user characteristics via STEP-BACK PROFILING for collaborative writing. Moreover, our approach outperforms the baselines by up to 3.6 points on the general personalization benchmark (LaMP), including 7 personalization LLM tasks. Our ablation studies validate the contributions of different components in our method and provide insights into our task definition. IDA-VLM: Towards Movie Understanding via ID-Aware Large Vision-Language Model

The rapid advancement of Large Vision-Language models (LVLMs) has demonstrated a spectrum of emergent capabilities. Nevertheless, current models only focus on the visual content of a single scenario, while their ability to associate instances across different scenes has not yet been explored, which is essential for understanding complex visual content, such as movies with multiple characters and intricate plots. Towards movie understanding, a critical initial step for LVLMs is to unleash the potential of character identities memory and recognition across multiple visual scenarios. To achieve the goal, we propose visual instruction tuning with ID reference and develop an ID-Aware Large Vision-Language Model, IDA-VLM. Furthermore, our research introduces a novel benchmark MM-ID, to examine LVLMs on instance IDs memory and recognition across four dimensions: matching, location, question-answering, and captioning. Our findings highlight the limitations of existing LVLMs in recognizing and associating instance identities with ID reference. This paper paves the way for future artificial intelligence systems to possess multi-identity visual inputs, thereby facilitating the comprehension of complex visual narratives like movies.

FuXi-S2S: A machine learning model that outperforms conventional global subseasonal forecast models

Skillful subseasonal forecasts are crucial for various sectors of society but pose a grand scientific challenge. Recently, machine learning based weather forecasting models outperform the most successful numerical weather predictions generated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), but have not yet surpassed conventional models at subseasonal timescales. This paper introduces FuXi Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (FuXi-S2S), a machine learning model that provides global daily mean forecasts up to 42 days, encompassing five upper-air atmospheric variables at 13 pressure levels and 11 surface variables. FuXi-S2S, trained on 72 years of daily statistics from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis data, outperforms the ECMWF's state-of-the-art Subseasonal-to-Seasonal model in ensemble mean and ensemble forecasts for total precipitation and outgoing longwave radiation, notably enhancing global precipitation forecast. The improved performance of FuXi-S2S can be primarily attributed to its superior capability to capture forecast uncertainty and accurately predict the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), extending the skillful MJO prediction from 30 days to 36 days. Moreover, FuXi-S2S not only captures realistic teleconnections associated with the MJO, but also emerges as a valuable tool for discovering precursor signals, offering researchers insights and potentially establishing a new paradigm in Earth system science research.

On the extension problems for three 33-stem homotopy groups

This paper tackles the extension problems for three far-unsatble homotopy groups $π_{39}(S^{6})$, $π_{40}(S^{7})$, and $π_{41}(S^{8})$ localized at 2, the puzzles having remained unsolved for forty-five years. By a Toda bracket indexed by 1 included in $π_{39}(S^{6}_{(2)})$, which makes better use of the deuspension property of homotopy classes, we address the problems. As a corollary, through Thomeier's 8-step backward theorem of the metastable homotopy theory, together with the results of Oda, Mukai and Miyauchi, we show a table of the 33-stem homotopy groups $π_{33+n}(S^{n}_{(2)})$, ($2\leq n\leq 9$, $n\geq27$).
