RHOBIN Challenge: Reconstruction of Human Object Interaction

Modeling the interaction between humans and objects has been an emerging research direction in recent years. Capturing human-object interaction is however a very challenging task due to heavy occlusion and complex dynamics, which requires understanding not only 3D human pose, and object pose but also the interaction between them. Reconstruction of 3D humans and objects has been two separate research fields in computer vision for a long time. We hence proposed the first RHOBIN challenge: reconstruction of human-object interactions in conjunction with the RHOBIN workshop. It was aimed at bringing the research communities of human and object reconstruction as well as interaction modeling together to discuss techniques and exchange ideas. Our challenge consists of three tracks of 3D reconstruction from monocular RGB images with a focus on dealing with challenging interaction scenarios. Our challenge attracted more than 100 participants with more than 300 submissions, indicating the broad interest in the research communities. This paper describes the settings of our challenge and discusses the winning methods of each track in more detail. We observe that the human reconstruction task is becoming mature even under heavy occlusion settings while object pose estimation and joint reconstruction remain challenging tasks. With the growing interest in interaction modeling, we hope this report can provide useful insights and foster future research in this direction. The Multiplication Formulas of Weighted Quantum Cluster Functions

By applying the property of Ext-symmetry and the affine space structure of certain fibers, we introduce the notion of weighted quantum cluster functions and prove their multiplication formulas associated to abelian categories with Ext-symmetry and 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories with cluster-tilting objects.

CCM: Adding Conditional Controls to Text-to-Image Consistency Models

Consistency Models (CMs) have showed a promise in creating visual content efficiently and with high quality. However, the way to add new conditional controls to the pretrained CMs has not been explored. In this technical report, we consider alternative strategies for adding ControlNet-like conditional control to CMs and present three significant findings. 1) ControlNet trained for diffusion models (DMs) can be directly applied to CMs for high-level semantic controls but struggles with low-level detail and realism control. 2) CMs serve as an independent class of generative models, based on which ControlNet can be trained from scratch using Consistency Training proposed by Song et al. 3) A lightweight adapter can be jointly optimized under multiple conditions through Consistency Training, allowing for the swift transfer of DMs-based ControlNet to CMs. We study these three solutions across various conditional controls, including edge, depth, human pose, low-resolution image and masked image with text-to-image latent consistency models.

The physics case for neutrino-neutrino collisions

Addressing the mass origin and properties of neutrinos is of strong interest to particle physics, baryogenesis and cosmology. Popular explanations involve physics beyond the standard model, for example, the dimension-5 Weinberg operator or heavy Majorana neutrinos arising from ``seesaw'' models. The current best direct limits on the electron neutrino mass, derived from nuclei beta decay or neutrinoless double beta decay processes, are at the sub-electronvolt level. Here we propose a novel neutrino neutrino collider where the neutrino beam is generated from TeV scale muon decays. Such collisions can happen between either neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, or neutrinos and neutrinos. We find that with a tiny integrated luminosity of about $10^{-5}$/fb we can already expect to observe direct neutrino anti-neutrino annihilation, $ν\barν\rightarrow {\rm Z}$, which also opens the door to explore neutrino related resonances $ν\barν\rightarrow {\rm X}$. The low luminosity requirement can accommodate a relatively large emittance muon beam. Such a device would also allow for probing heavy Majorana neutrino and effective Majorana neutrino mass through $νν\rightarrow {\rm H H}$ to a competitive level, for both electron and muon types.

Tame quivers and affine bases I: a Hall algebra approach to the canonical bases

For quantum group of affine type, Lusztig gave an explicit construction of the affine canonical basis by simple perverse sheaves. In this paper, we construct a bar-invariant basis by using a PBW basis arising from representations of the corresponding tame quiver. We prove that this bar-invariant basis coincides with Lusztig's canonical basis and obtain a concrete bijection between the elements in theses two bases. The index set of these bases is listed orderly by modules in preprojective, regular non-homogeneous, preinjective components and irreducible characters of symmetric groups. Our results are based on the work of Lin-Xiao-Zhang and closely related with the work of Beck-Nakajima. A crucial method in our construction is a generalization of that by Deng-Du-Xiao.

Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes Get More Localized Through Micelle-Like Structures

Liquid electrolytes in batteries are typically treated as macroscopically homogeneous ionic transport media despite having complex chemical composition and atomistic solvation structures, leaving a knowledge gap of microstructural characteristics. Here, we reveal a unique micelle-like structure in a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), in which the solvent acts as a surfactant between an insoluble salt in diluent. The miscibility of the solvent with the diluent and simultaneous solubility of the salt results in a micelle-like structure with a smeared interface and an increased salt concentration at the centre of the salt-solvent clusters that extends the salt solubility. These intermingling miscibility effects have temperature dependencies, wherein an exemplified LHCE peaks in localized cluster salt concentration near room temperature and is utilized to form a stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li-metal anode. These findings serve as a guide to predicting a stable ternary phase diagram and connecting the electrolyte microstructure with electrolyte formulation and formation protocols to form stable SEI for enhanced battery cyclability.

Simultaneous Single Crystal Growth and Segregation of Ni-Rich Cathode Enabled by Nanoscale Phase Separation for Advanced Lithium-Ion Batteries

Synthesis of high-performance single crystal LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) in the absence of molten salt is challenging with no success yet. An innovative drop-in approach is discovered to synthesize single crystal NMC811 by controlling the morphology of transition metal hydroxide TM(OH)2 precursors followed by a simple decomposition step to form transition metal oxide (TMO) intermediates. Ni redistribution in TMO, as a result of the concurrent formation of mixed spinel and rock salt phases, helps deagglomerate the later formed NMC811 clusters of single crystals. As-prepared single crystal NMC811 is validated in a 2Ah pouch cell demonstrating 1000 stable cycling. The fundamentally new reaction mechanism of single crystal growth and segregation without molten salt provides a new direction towards cost-efficient manufacturing of single crystal NMC811 cathode for advanced lithium-based batteries.

Pressure-Induced Detour of Li$^+$ Transport during Large-Scale Electroplating of Lithium in High-Energy Lithium Metal Pouch Cells

Externally applied pressure impacts the performance of batteries particularly in those undergoing large volume changes, such as lithium metal batteries. In particular, the Li$^+$ electroplating process in large format pouch cells occurs at a larger dimension compared to those in smaller lab-scale cells. A fundamental linkage between external pressure and large format electroplating of Li$^+$ remains missing but yet critically needed to understand the electrochemical behavior of Li$^+$ in practical batteries. Herein, this work utilizes 350 Wh/kg lithium metal pouch cell as a model system to study the electroplating of Li$^+$ ions and the impact of external pressure. The vertically applied uniaxial pressure on the batteries using liquid electrolyte profoundly affects the electroplating process of Li$^+$ which is well reflected by the self-generated pressures in the cell and can be correlated to battery cycling stability. Taking advantage of both constant gap and pressure application, all Li metal pouch cells demonstrated minimum swelling of 6-8% after 300 cycles, comparable to that of state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Along the horizontal directions, the pressure distributed across the surface of Li metal pouch cell reveals a unique phenomenon of Li$^+$ migration during the electroplating (charge) process driven by an uneven distribution of external pressure across the large electrode area, leading to a preferred Li plating in the center area of Li metal anode. This work addresses a longstanding question and provides new fundamental insights on large format electrochemical plating of Li which will inspire more innovations and lead to homogeneous deposition of Li to advance rechargeable lithium metal battery technology.

The correspondence between the canonical and semicanonical bases

Given any symmetric Cartan datum, Lusztig has provided a pair of key lemmas to construct the perverse sheaves over the corresponding quiver and the functions of irreducible components over the corresponding preprojective algebra respectively. In the present article, we prove that these two inductive algorithms of Lusztig coincide. Consequently we can define two colored graphs and prove that they are isomorhic. This result finishes the statement that Lusztig's functions of irreducible components are basis of the enveloping algebra and deduces the crystal structure (in the sense of Kashiwara-Saito) from the semicanonical basis directly inside Lusztig's convolution algebra of the preprojective algebra. As an application, we prove that the transition matrix between the canonical basis and the semicanonical basis is upper triangular with all diagonal entries equal to 1.

The Parity of Lusztig's Restriction Functor and Green's Formula

Our investigation in the present paper is based on three important results. (1) In [12], Ringel introduced Hall algebra for representations of a quiver over finite fields and proved the elements corresponding to simple representations satisfy the quantum Serre relation. This gives a realization of the nilpotent part of quantum group if the quiver is of finite type. (2) In [4], Green found a homological formula for the representation category of the quiver and equipped Ringel's Hall algebra with a comultiplication. The generic form of the composition subalgebra of Hall algebra generated by simple representations realizes the nilpotent part of quantum group of any type. (3) In [9], Lusztig defined induction and restriction functors for the perverse sheaves on the variety of representations of the quiver which occur in the direct images of constant sheaves on flag varieties, and he found a formula between his induction and restriction functors which gives the comultiplication as algebra homomorphism for quantum group. In the present paper, we prove the formula holds for all semisimple complexes with Weil structure. This establishes the categorification of Green's formula.

Colossal Nernst power factor in topological semimetal NbSb$_2$

Today solid-state cooling technologies below liquid nitrogen boiling temperature (77 K), crucial to quantum information technology and probing quantum state of matter, are greatly limited due to the lack of good thermoelectric and/or thermomagnetic materials. Here, we report the discovery of colossal Nernst power factor of 3800$\times$10$^{-4}$ W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ under 5 T at 25 K and high Nernst figure-of-merit of 71$\times$10$^{-4}$ K$^{-1}$ under 5 T at 20 K in topological semimetal NbSb$_2$ single crystals. The observed high thermomagnetic performance is attributed to large Nernst thermopower and longitudinal electrical conductivity, and relatively low transverse thermal conductivity. The large and unsaturated Nernst thermopower is the result of the combination of highly desirable electronic structures of NbSb$_2$ having compensated high mobility electrons and holes near Fermi level and strong phonon-drag effect. This discovery opens an avenue for exploring material option for the solid-state heat pumping below liquid nitrogen temperature.

Boosted tau lepton as a microscope and macroscope

Anomalies from the LHCb lepton flavour universality and Fermilab muon anomalous magnetic momentum, show tantalizing hints of possible new physics from the lepton sectors. Due to its large mass and shorter lifetime than muon, the tau lepton is believed to couple more to possible new physics beyond the standard model. Traditionally, tau leptons are probed through the decay products due to tau's short life time. On the other hand, at a high energy scale, a large fraction of tau leptons could be boosted to a much longer life time and fly a visible distance from several centimetres up to kilometer length scale, yet very informative to new physics beyond the standard model or high energy cosmic rays. In this article, we show unique yet promising tau physics by exploiting long-lived taus as a microscope or macroscope, to measure tau's anomalous magnetic momentum to an unprecedented level of accuracy and detect high energy cosmic neutrinos at the 1 TeV to 1 PeV scale, respectively.

The physics case for a neutrino lepton collider in light of the CDF W mass measurement

We propose a neutrino lepton collider where the neutrino beam is generated from TeV scale muon decays. Such a device would allow for a precise measurement of the W mass based on single W production: nu l to W. Although it is challenging to achieve high instantaneous luminosity with such a collider, we find that a total luminosity of 0.1/fb can already yield competitive physics results. In addition to a W mass measurement, a rich variety of physics goals could be achieved with such a collider, including W boson precision measurements, heavy leptophilic gauge boson searches, and anomalous Znunu coupling searches. A neutrino lepton collider is both a novel idea in itself, and may also be a useful intermediate step, with less muon cooling required, towards the muon-muon collider already being pursued by the energy frontier community. A neutrino neutrino or neutrino proton collider may also be interesting future options for the high energy frontier.

Principled Knowledge Extrapolation with GANs

Human can extrapolate well, generalize daily knowledge into unseen scenarios, raise and answer counterfactual questions. To imitate this ability via generative models, previous works have extensively studied explicitly encoding Structural Causal Models (SCMs) into architectures of generator networks. This methodology, however, limits the flexibility of the generator as they must be carefully crafted to follow the causal graph, and demands a ground truth SCM with strong ignorability assumption as prior, which is a nontrivial assumption in many real scenarios. Thus, many current causal GAN methods fail to generate high fidelity counterfactual results as they cannot easily leverage state-of-the-art generative models. In this paper, we propose to study counterfactual synthesis from a new perspective of knowledge extrapolation, where a given knowledge dimension of the data distribution is extrapolated, but the remaining knowledge is kept indistinguishable from the original distribution. We show that an adversarial game with a closed-form discriminator can be used to address the knowledge extrapolation problem, and a novel principal knowledge descent method can efficiently estimate the extrapolated distribution through the adversarial game. Our method enjoys both elegant theoretical guarantees and superior performance in many scenarios.

A sensitivity study of VBS and diboson WW to dimension-6 EFT operators at the LHC

We present a parton-level study of electro-weak production of vector-boson pairs at the Large Hadron Collider, establishing the sensitivity to a set of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Different final states are statistically combined, and we discuss how the orthogonality and interdependence of different analyses must be considered to obtain the most stringent constraints. The main novelties of our study are the inclusion of SMEFT effects in non-resonant diagrams and in irreducible QCD backgrounds, and an exhaustive template analysis of optimal observables for each operator and process considered. We also assess for the first time the sensitivity of vector-boson-scattering searches in semileptonic final states.

Stabilization of Co oxide during oxygen evolution in alkaline media by the introduction of Mn oxide

Improving the stability of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through materials design has received less attention than improving their catalytic activity. We explored the effect of Mn addition to a cobalt oxide for stabilizing the catalyst by comparing Na-containing CoOx and (Co0.7Mn0.3)Ox films electrodeposited in alkaline solution. The obtained disordered films were classified as layered oxides using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The CoOx films showed a constant decrease in the catalytic activity during cycling, confirmed by oxygen detection, while that of (Co0.7Mn0.3)Ox slightly increased as measured by electrochemical metrics. These trends were rationalized based on XAS analysis of the metal oxidation states, which were Co2.8+ and Mn3.7+ near the surface after cycling. Thus, adding Mn to CoOx successfully stabilized the catalyst material and its activity during OER cycling. The development of stabilization approaches is essential to extend the durability of OER catalysts.

Searching for heavy leptoquarks at a muon collider

The LHCb Collaboration recently gave an update on testing lepton flavour universality with $B^+ \rightarrow K^+ \ell^+ \ell^-$, in which a 3.1 standard deviations from the standard model prediction was observed. The g-2 experiment also reports a 3.3 standard deviations from the standard model on muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement. These deviations could be explained by introducing new particles including leptoquarks. In this paper, we show the possibility to search for heavy spin-1 leptoquarks at a future TeV scale muon collider by performing studies from three channels: 1) same flavour final states with either two bottom or two light quarks, 2) different flavour quark final states, and 3) a so-called "VXS" process representing the scattering between a vector boson and a leptoquark to probe the coupling between leptoquark and tau lepton. We conclude that a 3 TeV muon collider with $3~{ab^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity is already sufficient to cover the leptoquark parameter space in order to explain the LHCb lepton flavour universality anomaly.

On bases of quantum affine algebras

Let $\textbf{U}^+$ be the positive part of the quantum group $\textbf{U}$ associated with a generalized Cartan matrix. In the case of finite type, Lusztig constructed the canonical basis $\textbf{B}$ of $\textbf{U}^+$ via two approaches. The first one is an elementary algebraic construction via Ringel-Hall algebra realization of $\textbf{U}^+$ and the second one is a geometric construction. The geometric construction of canonical basis can be generalized to the cases of all types. The generalization of the elementary algebraic construction to affine type is an important problem. We give several main results of algebraic constructions to the affine canonical basis in this ariticle. These results are given by Beck-Nakajima, Lin-Xiao-Zhang, Xiao-Xu-Zhao, respectively.
