A strange metal in a bosonic system

Fermi liquid theory forms the basis for our understanding of the majority of metals, which is manifested in the description of transport properties that the electrical resistivity goes as temperature squared in the limit of zero temperature. However, the observations of strange metal states in various quantum materials, notably high-temperature superconductors, bring this spectacularly successful theoretical framework into crisis. When electron scattering rate 1/τ hits its limit, kBT/{\hbar} where {\hbar} is the reduced Planck's constant, T represents absolute temperature and kB denotes Boltzmann's constant, Planckian dissipation occurs and lends strange metals a surprising link to black holes, gravity, and quantum information theory. Here, we show the characteristic signature of strange metallicity arising unprecedentedly in a bosonic system. Our nanopatterned YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) film arrays reveal T-linear resistance as well as B-linear magnetoresistance over an extended temperature and magnetic field range in a quantum critical region in the phase diagram. Moreover, the slope of the T-linear resistance α_cp appears bounded by α_cp {\approx} h/2e^2 [1/T]_c^onset where T_c^onset is the temperature at which Cooper pairs form, intimating a common scale-invariant transport mechanism corresponding to Planckian dissipation. In contrast to fermionic systems where the temperature and magnetic field dependent scattering rates combine in quadrature of {\hbar}/τ {\approx} {\sqrt} (((k_B T)^2+(μ_B B)^2)), both terms linearly combine in the present bosonic system, i.e. {\hbar}/τ {\approx} (k_B T+[γμ]_B B), where γ is a constant. By extending the reach of strange metal phenomenology to a bosonic system, our results suggest that there is a fundamental principle governing their transport which transcends particle statistics.

Indefinite Backward Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems

This paper is concerned with a backward stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem with deterministic coefficients. The weighting matrices are allowed to be indefinite, and cross-product terms in the control and state processes are present in the cost functional. Based on a Hilbert space method, necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the solvability of the problem, and a general approach for constructing optimal controls is developed. The crucial step in this construction is to establish the solvability of a Riccati-type equation, which is accomplished under a fairly weak condition by investigating the connection with forward stochastic LQ optimal control problems.

Well-posedness of martingale problem for SBM with interacting branching

In this paper a martingale problem for super-Brownian motion with interactive branching is derived. The uniqueness of the solution to the martingale problem is obtained by using the pathwise uniqueness of the solution to a corresponding system of SPDEs with proper boundary conditions. The existence of the solution to the martingale problem and the Holder continuity of the density process are also studied.

Mutually interacting superprocesses with migration

A system of mutually interacting superprocesses with migration is constructed as the limit of a sequence of branching particle systems arising from population models. The uniqueness in law of the superprocesses is established using the pathwise uniqueness of a system of stochastic partial differential equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients, which is satisfied by the corresponding system of distribution-function-valued processes.

Mean-variance portfolio selection under partial information with drift uncertainty

In this paper, we study the mean-variance portfolio selection problem under partial information with drift uncertainty. First we show that the market model is complete even in this case while the information is not complete and the drift is uncertain. Then, the optimal strategy based on partial information is derived, which reduces to solving a related backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). Finally, we propose an efficient numerical scheme to approximate the optimal portfolio that is the solution of the BSDE mentioned above. Malliavin calculus and the particle representation play important roles in this scheme.

A stochastic maximum principle for partially observed stochastic control systems with delay

This paper deals with partially-observed optimal control problems for the state governed by stochastic differential equation with delay. We develop a stochastic maximum principle for this kind of optimal control problems using a variational method and a filtering technique. Also, we establish a sufficient condition without assumption of the concavity. Two examples shed light on the theoretical results are established in the paper. In particular, in the example of an optimal investment problem with delay, its numerical simulation shows the effect of delay via a discretization technique for forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) with delay and anticipate terms.

Analysis of Phase Formations and Mechanical Properties in Complex Concentrated Alloys by Machine Learning Approach

The mechanical properties of complex concentrated alloys (CCAs) depend on their forming phases and corresponding structures, the prediction of the phase formation for a given CCA is essential to its discovery and applications. 541 sample were collected from previous studies, comprising 61 amorphous, 164 single-phase crystalline, and 361 multi-phases crystalline CCAs. We proposed three classification models to category and understand the phase selection of CCAS. Also, a two-objective regression model was constructed to predict the hardness and compressive yield stress of CCAs. All three classification models have accuracies higher than 85%, and correlation coefficient of random forest regression model is greater than 0.9 for both of two objectives. In addition, we proposed four descriptors via multi-task SISSO method to predict the mechanical properties of CCAs, the average correlation coefficient of SISSO models is higher than 0.85. The present work demonstrates the great potential of machine learning approach in the prediction of target properties in CCAs.

Identifying the elastic isotropy of architectured materials based on deep learning method

With the achievement on the additive manufacturing, the mechanical properties of architectured materials can be precisely designed by tailoring microstructures. As one of the primary design objectives, the elastic isotropy is of great significance for many engineering applications. However, the prevailing experimental and numerical methods are normally too costly and time-consuming to determine the elastic isotropy of architectured materials with tens of thousands of possible microstructures in design space. The quick mechanical characterization is thus desired for the advanced design of architectured materials. Here, a deep learning-based approach is developed as a portable and efficient tool to identify the elastic isotropy of architectured materials directly from the images of their representative microstructures with arbitrary component distributions. The measure of elastic isotropy for architectured materials is derived firstly in this paper to construct a database with associated images of microstructures. Then a convolutional neural network is trained with the database. It is found that the convolutional neural network shows good performance on the isotropy identification. Meanwhile, it exhibits enough robustness to maintain the performance under fluctuated material properties in practical fabrications. Moreover, the well-trained convolutional neural network can be successfully transferred among different types of architectured materials, including two-phase composites and porous materials, which greatly enhance the efficiency of the deep learning-based approach. This study can give new inspirations on the fast mechanical characterization for the big-data driven design of architectured materials.

SPDEs with non-Lipschitz coefficients and nonhomogeous boundary conditions

In this paper we establish the strong existence, pathwise uniqueness and a comparison theorem to a stochastic partial differential equation driven by Gaussian colored noise with non-Lipschitz drift, Hölder continuous diffusion coefficients and the spatial domain in finite interval, $[0,1]$, and with Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed nonhomogeneous random conditions imposed on the endpoints. The Hölder continuity of the solution both in time and in space variables is also studied.

Machine Learning of Mechanical Properties of Steels

The mechanical properties are essential for structural materials. The analyzed 360 data on four mechanical properties of steels, viz. fatigue strength, tensile strength, fracture strength, and hardness, are selected from the NIMS database, including carbon steels, and low-alloy steels. Five machine learning algorithms were applied on the 360 data to predict the mechanical properties and random forest regression illustrates the best performance. The feature selection was conducted by random forest and symbolic regressions, leading to the four most important features of tempering temperature, and alloying elements of carbon, chromium, and molybdenum to the mechanical properties of steels. Besides, mathematic expressions were generated via symbolic regression, and the expressions explicitly predict how each of the four mechanical properties varies quantitatively with the four most important features. The present work demonstrates the great potential of symbolic regression in the discovery of novel advanced materials.

Towards Flexible Wireless Charging for Medical Implants Using Distributed Antenna System

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of In-N-Out, a software-hardware solution for far-field wireless power transfer. In-N-Out can continuously charge a medical implant residing in deep tissues at near-optimal beamforming power, even when the implant moves around inside the human body. To accomplish this, we exploit the unique energy ball pattern of distributed antenna array and devise a backscatter-assisted beamforming algorithm that can concentrate RF energy on a tiny spot surrounding the medical implant. Meanwhile, the power levels on other body parts stay in low level, reducing the risk of overheating. We prototype In-N-Out on 21 software-defined radios and a printed circuit board (PCB). Extensive experiments demonstrate that In-N-Out achieves 0.37~mW average charging power inside a 10~cm-thick pork belly, which is sufficient to wirelessly power a range of commercial medical devices. Our head-to-head comparison with the state-of-the-art approach shows that In-N-Out achieves 5.4$\times$--18.1$\times$ power gain when the implant is stationary, and 5.3$\times$--7.4$\times$ power gain when the implant is in motion.

Indefinite Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems with Random Coefficients: Closed-Loop Representation of Open-Loop Optimal Controls

This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem in a finite time horizon, where the coefficients of the control system are allowed to be random, and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are allowed to be random and indefinite. It is shown, with a Hilbert space approach, that for the existence of an open-loop optimal control, the convexity of the cost functional (with respect to the control) is necessary; and the uniform convexity, which is slightly stronger, turns out to be sufficient, which also leads to the unique solvability of the associated stochastic Riccati equation. Further, it is shown that the open-loop optimal control admits a closed-loop representation. In addition, some sufficient conditions are obtained for the uniform convexity of the cost functional, which are strictly general than the classical conditions that the weighting matrix-valued processes are positive (semi-)definite.

Weak Closed-Loop Solvability of Stochastic Linear Quadratic Optimal Control Problems of Markovian Regime Switching System

In this paper, we investigate the open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities of stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem of Markovian regime switching system. Interestingly, these two solvabilities are equivalent. We first provide an alternative characterization of the open-loop solvability of the LQ problem using the perturbation approach. Then, we study the weak closed-loop solvability of the LQ problem of Markovian regime switching system, and establish the equivalent relationship between open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities. Finally, we present an example to illustrate the procedure for finding weak closed-loop optimal strategies within the framework of Markovian regime switching system.

FarSense: Pushing the Range Limit of WiFi-based Respiration Sensing with CSI Ratio of Two Antennas

The past few years have witnessed the great potential of exploiting channel state information retrieved from commodity WiFi devices for respiration monitoring. However, existing approaches only work when the target is close to the WiFi transceivers and the performance degrades significantly when the target is far away. On the other hand, most home environments only have one WiFi access point and it may not be located in the same room as the target. This sensing range constraint greatly limits the application of the proposed approaches in real life. This paper presents FarSense--the first real-time system that can reliably monitor human respiration when the target is far away from the WiFi transceiver pair. FarSense works well even when one of the transceivers is located in another room, moving a big step towards real-life deployment. We propose two novel schemes to achieve this goal: (1) Instead of applying the raw CSI readings of individual antenna for sensing, we employ the ratio of CSI readings from two antennas, whose noise is mostly canceled out by the division operation to significantly increase the sensing range; (2) The division operation further enables us to utilize the phase information which is not usable with one single antenna for sensing. The orthogonal amplitude and phase are elaborately combined to address the "blind spots" issue and further increase the sensing range. Extensive experiments show that FarSense is able to accurately monitor human respiration even when the target is 8 meters away from the transceiver pair, increasing the sensing range by more than 100%. We believe this is the first system to enable through-wall respiration sensing with commodity WiFi devices and the proposed method could also benefit other sensing applications.

Backward doubly stochastic Volterra integral equations and applications to optimal control problems

Backward doubly stochastic Volterra integral equations (BDSVIEs, for short) are introduced and studied systematically. Well-posedness of BDSVIEs in the sense of introduced M-solutions is established. A comparison theorem for BDSVIEs is proved. By virtue of the comparison theorem, we derive the existence of solutions for BDSVIEs with continuous coefficients. Furthermore, a duality principle between linear (forward) doubly stochastic Volterra integral equation (FDSVIE, for short) and BDSVIE is obtained. A Pontryagin type maximum principle is also established for an optimal control problem of FDSVIEs.

Optimal Control for Controllable Stochastic Linear Systems

This paper is concerned with a constrained stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem, in which the terminal state is fixed and the initial state is constrained to lie in a stochastic linear manifold. The controllability of stochastic linear systems is studied. Then the optimal control is explicitly obtained by considering a parameterized unconstrained backward LQ problem and an optimal parameter selection problem. A notable feature of our results is that, instead of solving an equation involving derivatives with respect to the parameter, the optimal parameter is characterized by an algebraic equation.

Anonymous Auction Protocol Based on Time-Released Encryption atop Consortium Blockchain

The Ethereum blockchain as a decentralized platform is so successful that many applications deployed on it. However, for the inherent transparency properties and the lack of privacy, deploying a financial application on top of it is always a challenge. In this paper, we tackle this challenge and propose an anonymous sealed-bid auction protocol based on time-released encryption atop Consortium Blockchain. We adopt a strict digital certificate-based identity mechanism of the consortium blockchain to permit legitimate participants, and utilize the blind signature based on elliptic curve technology to allowing anonymous participation. Moreover, a timed release public key encryption algorithm is adopted to encrypt bids and prevent auctioneer from colluding with bidders. This is completely different from the method (zero-knowledge proof) used in other papers to prevent collusion between auctioneer and bidder. We provide a specific analysis of our protocol, which shows that our protocol meets anonymity and applicability.

The main results can be applied to stochastic partial differential equations of various types such as the stochastic Burgers equation and the reaction-diffusion equations perturbed by space-time white noise.
