Three-manifolds at infinity of complex hyperbolic orbifolds

We show the manifolds at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle groups $Δ_{3,4,4;\infty}$ and $Δ_{3,4,6;\infty}$,are one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds $m038$ and $s090$ in the Snappy Census respectively. That is,these two manifolds admit spherical CR uniformizations. Moreover, these two hyperbolic 3-manifolds above can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on the first cusp of the two-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $m295$ in the Snappy Census with slopes $2$ and $4$ respectively. In general, the main result in this paper allow us to conjecture that the manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle group $Δ_{3,4,n;\infty}$ is the one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery on the first cusp of $m295$ with slope $n-2$.

Satellite constructions and geometric classification of Brunnian links

In this paper, we construct two families of satellite constructions for Brunnian links, called the satellite sum and the satellite tie. An interesting fact is that by applying the satellite sum and the satellite tie constructions, we can build infinitely many new Brunnian links from any given Brunnian links. With the helps of the satellite sum and the satellite tie, we give a new decomposition theorem for Brunnian links. We prove that every Brunnian link determines a unique labelled "tree-arrow structure" such that each vertex of the tree represents a generalized Hopf link, a hyperbolic Brunnian link, or a hyperbolic Brunnian link in an unlink-complement.

Distinguishing 4-dimensional geometries via profinite completions

It is well-known that there are 19 classes of geometries for 4-dimensional manifolds in the sense of Thurston. We could ask that to what extent the geometric information is revealed by the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a closed smooth geometric 4-manifold. In this paper, we show that the geometry of a closed orientable 4-manifold in the sense of Thurston could be detected by the profinite completion of its fundamental group except when the geometry is $ \mathbb{H}^{4}$, $\mathbb{H}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ or $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{H}^2$. Moreover, despite the fact that not every smooth 4-manifold could admit one geometry in the sense of Thurston, some 4-dimensional manifolds with Seifert fibred structures are indeed geometric. For a closed orientable Seifert fibred 4-manifold $M$, we show that whether $M$ is geometric could be detected by the profinite completion of its fundamental group.

Algebraic fibrations of certain hyperbolic 4-manifolds

Algebraically fibering group is an algebraic generalization of the fibered 3-manifold group in higher dimensions. Let $M(\mathcal{P})$ and $M(\mathcal{E})$ be the cusped and compact hyperbolic real moment-angled manifolds associated to the hyperbolic right-angled 24-cell $\mathcal{P}$ and the hyperbolic right-angled 120-cell $\mathcal{E}$, respectively. Jankiewicz-Norin-Wise showed in [13] that $π_1(M(\mathcal{P}))$ and $π_1(M(\mathcal{E}))$ are algebraic fibered. Namely, there are two exact sequences $$1\rightarrow H_{\mathcal{P}}\rightarrow π_1(M(\mathcal{P}))\xrightarrow{ϕ_{\mathcal{P}}} \mathbb{Z}\rightarrow 1,$$ $$1\rightarrow H_{\mathcal{E}}\rightarrow π_1(M(\mathcal{E}))\xrightarrow{ϕ_{\mathcal{E}}} \mathbb{Z}\rightarrow 1,$$ where $H_{\mathcal{P}}$ and $H_{\mathcal{E}}$ are finitely generated. In this paper, we furtherly show that the groups $H_{\mathcal{P}}$ and $H_{\mathcal{E}}$ are not $FP_2$. In particular, those fiber-kernel groups are finitely generated, but not finitely presented.

Quasi-homomorphisms on mapping class groups vanishing on a handlebody group

We construct infinitely many linearly independent quasi-homomorphisms on the mapping class group of a Riemann surface with genus at least two which vanish on a handlebody subgroup. As a corollary, we disprove a conjecture of Reznikov on bounded width in Heegaard splittings. Another corollary is that there are infinitely many linearly independent quasi-invariants on the Heegaard splittings of three-manifolds.

Geometrically bounding 3-manifold, volume and Betti number

It is well known that an arbitrary closed orientable $3$-manifold can be realized as the unique boundary of a compact orientable $4$-manifold, that is, any closed orientable $3$-manifold is cobordant to zero. In this paper, we consider the geometric cobordism problem: a hyperbolic $3$-manifold is geometrically bounding if it is the only boundary of a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. However, there are very rare geometrically bounding closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds according to the previous research [11,13]. Let $v \approx 4.3062\ldots$ be the volume of the regular right-angled hyperbolic dodecahedron in $\mathbb{H}^{3}$, for each $n \in \mathbb{Z}_{+}$ and each odd integer $k$ in $[1,5n+3]$, we construct a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with $β^1(M)=k$ and $vol(M)=16nv$ that bounds a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. The proof uses small cover theory over a sequence of linearly-glued dodecahedra and some results of Kolpakov-Martelli-Tschantz [9].

Degenerating slopes with respect to Heegaard distance

Let $M=H_{+}\cup_{S} H_{-}$ be a genus $g$ Heegaard splitting with Heegaard distance $n\geq κ+2$: (1) Let $c_{1}$, $c_{2}$ be two slopes in the same component of $\partial_{-}H_{-}$, such that the natural Heegaard splitting $M^{i}=H_{+}\cup_{S} (H_{-}\cup_{c_{i}} 2-handle)$ has distance less than $n$, then the distance of $c_{1}$ and $c_{2}$ in the curve complex of $\partial_{-}H_{-}$ is at most $3\mathfrak{M}+2$, where $κ$ and $\mathfrak{M}$ are constants due to Masur-Minsky. (2) Let $M^{*}$ be the manifold obtained by attaching a collection of handlebodies $\mathscr{H}$ to $\partial_{-} H_{-}$ along a map $f$ from $\partial \mathscr{H}$ to $\partial_{-} H_{-}$. If $f$ is a sufficiently large power of a generic pseudo-Anosov map, then the distance of the Heegaard splitting $M^{*}=H_{+}\cup (H_{-}\cup_{f} \mathscr{H})$ is still $n$. The proofs rely essentially on Masur-Minsky's theory of curve complex.

Genus two Smale-Williams solenoids in 3-manifolds

Using alternating Heegaard diagrams, we construct some 3-manifolds which admit diffeomorphisms such that the non-wandering sets of the diffeomorphisms are composed of Smale-Williams solenoid attractors and repellers, an interesting example is the truncated-cube space. In addition, we prove that if the nonwandering set of the diffeomorphism consists of genus two Smale-Williams solenoids, then the Heegaard genus of the closed manifold is at most two.

Heegaard Splittings of Boundary Reducible 3-Manifolds

In this paper, we shall prove that any Heegaard splitting of a $\partial$-reducible 3-manifold $M$, say $M=W\cup V$, can be obtained by doing connected sums, boundary connected sums and self-boundary connected sums from Heegaard splittings of $n$ manifolds $M_{1},..., M_{n}$ where $M_{i}$ is either a solid torus or a $\partial$-irreducible manifold. Furthermore, $W\cup V$ is stabilized if and only if one of the factors is stabilized.
