Secure Outage Analysis of RIS-Assisted Communications with Discrete Phase Control

This correspondence investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communication system with security threats. The RIS is deployed to enhance the secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the data sent to a legitimate user. By deriving the distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdropper, we formulate, in a closed-form expression, a tight bound for the SOP under the constraint of discrete phase control at the RIS. The SOP is characterized as a function of the number of antenna elements, $N$, and the number of discrete phase choices, $2^b$. It is revealed that the performance loss in terms of SOP due to the discrete phase control is ignorable for large $N$ when $b\!\geq\!3$. In addition, we explicitly quantify this SOP loss when binary phase shifts with $b\!=\!1$ is utilized. It is identified that increasing the RIS antenna elements by $1.6$ times can achieve the same SOP with binary phase shifts as that by the RIS with ideally continuous phase shifts. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surfaces: When Wave Propagation Control Meets Computing

The envisioned sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks will involve an intelligent integration of communications and computing, thereby meeting the urgent demands of diverse applications. To realize the concept of the smart radio environment, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a promising technology for offering programmable propagation of impinging electromagnetic signals via external control. However, the purely reflective nature of conventional RISs induces significant challenges in supporting computation-based applications, e.g., wave-based calculation and signal processing. To fulfil future communication and computing requirements, new materials are needed to complement the existing technologies of metasurfaces, enabling further diversification of electronics and their applications. In this event, we introduce the concept of reconfigurable intelligent computational surface (RICS), which is composed of two reconfigurable multifunctional layers: the `reconfigurable beamforming layer' which is responsible for tunable signal reflection, absorption, and refraction, and the `intelligence computation layer' that concentrates on metamaterials-based computing. By exploring the recent trends on computational metamaterials, RICSs have the potential to make joint communication and computation a reality. We further demonstrate two typical applications of RICSs for performing wireless spectrum sensing and secrecy signal processing. Future research challenges arising from the design and operation of RICSs are finally highlighted.

Reconfiguring Wireless Environment via Intelligent Surfaces for 6G: Reflection, Modulation, and Security

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as an essential enabling technique for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication network. Specifically, an RIS is comprised of a large number of small and low-cost reflecting elements whose parameters are dynamically adjustable with a programmable controller. Each of these elements can effectively reflect a phase-shifted version of the incident electromagnetic wave. By adjusting the wave phases in real time, the propagation environment of the reflected signals can be dynamically reconfigured to enhance communication reliability, boost transmission rate, expand cellular coverage, and strengthen communication security. In this paper, we provide an overview on RIS-assisted wireless communications. Specifically, we elaborate on the state-of-the-art enabling techniques of RISs as well as their corresponding substantial benefits from the perspectives of RIS reflection and RIS modulation. With these benefits, we envision the integration of RIS into emerging applications for 6G. In addition, communication security is of unprecedented importance in the 6G network with ubiquitous wireless services in multifarious verticals and areas. We highlight potential contributions of RIS to physical-layer security in terms of secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability, exemplified by a typical case study from both theoretical and numerical aspects. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities on the deployment of RISs in practice to motivate future research.

Intelligent MIMO Detection Using Meta Learning

In a K-best detector for multiple-input-multiple-output(MIMO) systems, the value of K needs to be sufficiently large to achieve near-maximum-likelihood (ML) performance. By treating K as a variable that can be adjusted according to a fitting function of some learnable coefficients, an intelligent MIMO detection network based on deep neural networks (DNN) is proposed to reduce complexity of the detection algorithm with little performance degradation. In particular, the proposed intelligent detection algorithm uses meta learning to learn the coefficients of the fitting function for K to circumvent the problem of learning K directly. The idea of network fusion is used to combine the learning results of the meta learning component networks. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves near-ML detection performance while its complexity is close to that of linear detectors. Besides, it also exhibits strong ability of fast training.

Worst-case Design for RIS-aided Over-the-air Computation with Imperfect CSI

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) enables fast wireless data aggregation at the receiver through concurrent transmission by sensors in the application of Internet-of-Things (IoT). To further improve the performance of AirComp under unfavorable propagation channel conditions, we consider the problem of computation distortion minimization in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided AirComp system. In particular, we take into account an additive bounded uncertainty of the channel state information (CSI) and the total power constraint, and jointly optimize the transceiver (Tx-Rx) and the RIS phase design from the perspective of worst-case robustness by minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) of the computation. To solve this intractable nonconvex problem, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm where both solutions to the robust sub-problem and to the joint design of Tx-Rx and RIS are obtained in closed forms. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Distributed Neural Precoding for Hybrid mmWave MIMO Communications with Limited Feedback

Hybrid precoding is a cost-efficient technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. This paper proposes a deep learning approach by using a distributed neural network for hybrid analog-and-digital precoding design with limited feedback. The proposed distributed neural precoding network, called DNet, is committed to achieving two objectives. First, the DNet realizes channel state information (CSI) compression with a distributed architecture of neural networks, which enables practical deployment on multiple users. Specifically, this neural network is composed of multiple independent sub-networks with the same structure and parameters, which reduces both the number of training parameters and network complexity. Secondly, DNet learns the calculation of hybrid precoding from reconstructed CSI from limited feedback. Different from existing black-box neural network design, the DNet is specifically designed according to the data form of the matrix calculation of hybrid precoding. Simulation results show that the proposed DNet significantly improves the performance up to nearly 50% compared to traditional limited feedback precoding methods under the tests with various CSI compression ratios.

Learning to Optimize Resource Assignment for Task Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing

In this paper, we consider a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where a mixed-integer offloading strategy is used to assist the resource assignment for task offloading. Although the conventional branch and bound (BnB) approach can be applied to solve this problem, a huge burden of computational complexity arises which limits the application of BnB. To address this issue, we propose an intelligent BnB (IBnB) approach which applies deep learning (DL) to learn the pruning strategy of the BnB approach. By using this learning scheme, the structure of the BnB approach ensures near-optimal performance and meanwhile DL-based pruning strategy significantly reduces the complexity. Numerical results verify that the proposed IBnB approach achieves optimal performance with complexity reduced by over 80%.

Data Augmentation Empowered Neural Precoding for Multiuser MIMO with MMSE Model

Precoding design exploiting deep learning methods has been widely studied for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. However, conventional neural precoding design applies black-box-based neural networks which are less interpretable. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based precoding method based on an interpretable design of a neural precoding network, namely iPNet. In particular, the iPNet mimics the classic minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding and approximates the matrix inversion in the design of the neural network architecture. Specifically, the proposed iPNet consists of a model-driven component network, responsible for augmenting the input channel state information (CSI), and a data-driven sub-network, responsible for precoding calculation from this augmented CSI. The latter data-driven module is explicitly interpreted as an unsupervised learner of the MMSE precoder. Simulation results show that by exploiting the augmented CSI, the proposed iPNet achieves noticeable performance gain over existing black-box designs and also exhibits enhanced generalizability against CSI mismatches.

RIS-Assisted Quasi-Static Broad Coverage for Wideband mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can establish favorable wireless environments to combat the severe attenuation and blockages in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. However, to achieve the optimal enhancement of performance, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) needs to be estimated at the cost of a large overhead that scales with the number of RIS elements and the number of users. In this paper, we design a quasi-static broad coverage at the RIS with the reduced overhead based on the statistical CSI. We propose a design framework to synthesize the power pattern reflected by the RIS that meets the customized requirements of broad coverage. For the communication of broadcast channels, we generalize the broad coverage of the single transmit stream to the scenario of multiple streams. Moreover, we employ the quasi-static broad coverage for a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) system, and derive the analytical expression of the downlink rate, which is proved to increase logarithmically with the power gain reflected by the RIS. By taking into account the overhead of channel estimation, the proposed quasi-static broad coverage even outperforms the design method that optimizes the RIS phases using the instantaneous CSI. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify these observations.

Sliding Differential Evolution Scheduling for Federated Learning in Bandwidth-Limited Networks

Federated learning (FL) in a bandwidth-limited network with energy-limited user equipments (UEs) is under-explored. In this paper, to jointly save energy consumed by the battery-limited UEs and accelerate the convergence of the global model in FL for the bandwidth-limited network, we propose the sliding differential evolution-based scheduling (SDES) policy. To this end, we first formulate an optimization that aims to minimize a weighted sum of energy consumption and model training convergence. Then, we apply the SDES with parallel differential evolution (DE) operations in several small-scale windows, to address the above proposed problem effectively. Compared with existing scheduling policies, the proposed SDES performs well in reducing energy consumption and the model convergence with lower computational complexity.

Cascaded Channel Estimation for IRS-assisted Mmwave Multi-antenna with Quantized Beamforming

In this letter, we optimize the channel estimator of the cascaded channel in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) multi-antenna system. In this system, the receiver is equipped with a hybrid architecture adopting quantized beamforming. Different from traditional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the design of channel estimation is challenging since the IRS is usually a passive array with limited signal processing capability. We derive the optimized channel estimator in a closed form by reformulating the problem of cascaded channel estimation in this system, leveraging the typical mean-squared error (MSE) criterion. Considering the presence of possible channel sparsity in mmWave channels, we generalize the proposed method by exploiting the channel sparsity for further performance enhancement and computational complexity reduction. Simulation results verify that the proposed estimator significantly outperforms the existing ones.

Distributed IRS with Statistical Passive Beamforming for MISO Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently been identified as a prominent technology with the ability of enhancing wireless communication by dynamically manipulating the propagation environment. This paper investigates a multiple-input single-output (MISO) system deploying distributed IRSs. For practical considerations, we propose an efficient design of passive reflecting beamforming for the IRSs to exploit statistical channel state information (CSI) and analyze the achievable rate of the network taking into account the impact of CSI estimation error. The ergodic achievable rate is derived in a closed form, which provides insightful system design guidelines. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived results and unveil the performance superiority of the proposed distributed IRS deployment over the conventional centralized deployment.

Analog Versus Hybrid Precoding for Multiuser Massive MIMO with Quantized CSI Feedback

In this letter, we study the performance of a downlink multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with sub-connected structure over limited feedback channels. Tight rate approximations are theoretically analyzed for the system with pure analog precoding and hybrid precoding. The effect of quantized analog and digital precoding is characterized in the derived expressions. Furthermore, it is revealed that the pure analog precoding outperforms the hybrid precoding using maximal-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero forcing (ZF) under certain conditions, and we theoretically characterize the conditions in closed form with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of users and the number of feedback bits. Numerical results verify the derived conclusions on both Rayleigh channels and mmWave channels.

On Uplink Performance of Multiuser Massive MIMO Relay Network With Limited RF Chains

This paper considers a multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output uplink with the help of an analog amplify-and-forward relay. The base station equips a large array of $N_d$ antennas but is supported by a far smaller number of radio-frequency chains. By first deriving new results for a cascaded phase-aligned two-hop channel, we obtain a tight bound for the ergodic rate in closed form for both perfect and quantized channel phase information. The rate is characterized as a function of a scaled equivalent signal-to-noise ratio of the two-hop channel. It implies that the source and relay powers can be respectively scaled down as $1/N_d^a$ and $1/N_d^{1-a}~ (0\!\leq\!a\!\leq\!1)$ for an asymptotically unchanged sum rate. Then for the rate maximization, the problem of power allocation is optimized with closed-form solutions. Simulation results verified the observations of our derived results.

Secure Communication for Spatially Sparse Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Channels via Hybrid Precoding

In this paper, we investigate secure communication over sparse millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels by exploiting the spatial sparsity of legitimate user's channel. We propose a secure communication scheme in which information data is precoded onto dominant angle components of the sparse channel through a limited number of radio-frequency (RF) chains, while artificial noise (AN) is broadcast over the remaining nondominant angles interfering only with the eavesdropper with a high probability. It is shown that the channel sparsity plays a fundamental role analogous to secret keys in achieving secure communication. Hence, by defining two statistical measures of the channel sparsity, we analytically characterize its impact on secrecy rate. In particular, a substantial improvement on secrecy rate can be obtained by the proposed scheme due to the uncertainty, i.e., "entropy", introduced by the channel sparsity which is unknown to the eavesdropper. It is revealed that sparsity in the power domain can always contribute to the secrecy rate. In contrast, in the angle domain, there exists an optimal level of sparsity that maximizes the secrecy rate. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme and derived results are verified by numerical simulations.

Secure Massive MIMO Communication with Low-resolution DACs

In this paper, we investigate secure transmission in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system adopting low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Artificial noise (AN) is deliberately transmitted simultaneously with the confidential signals to degrade the eavesdropper's channel quality. By applying the Bussgang theorem, a DAC quantization model is developed which facilitates the analysis of the asymptotic achievable secrecy rate. Interestingly, for a fixed power allocation factor $ϕ$, low-resolution DACs typically result in a secrecy rate loss, but in certain cases they provide superior performance, e.g., at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Specifically, we derive a closed-form SNR threshold which determines whether low-resolution or high-resolution DACs are preferable for improving the secrecy rate. Furthermore, a closed-form expression for the optimal $ϕ$ is derived. With AN generated in the null-space of the user channel and the optimal $ϕ$, low-resolution DACs inevitably cause secrecy rate loss. On the other hand, for random AN with the optimal $ϕ$, the secrecy rate is hardly affected by the DAC resolution because the negative impact of the quantization noise can be compensated for by reducing the AN power. All the derived analytical results are verified by numerical simulations.

Optimal Multiuser Loading in Quantized Massive MIMO under Spatially Correlated Channels

Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized with a closed-form solution by applying the asymptotic random matrix theory. The optimal regularization parameter increases linearly with respect to the user loading ratio while independent of the ADC quantization resolution and the channel correlation. Furthermore, asymptotic sum rate performance is characterized and a closed-form expression for the optimal user loading ratio is obtained at low signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal ratio increases with the DAC resolution while it decreases with the ADC resolution. Numerical simulations verify our observations.

Performance Analysis of Multi-Cell Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Networks with Low-Precision ADCs

In this paper, we investigate a multi-cell millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network with low-precision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the base station (BS). Each cell serves multiple users and each user is equipped with multiple antennas but driven by a single RF chain. We first introduce a channel estimation strategy for the mmWave massive MIMO network and analyze the achievable rate with imperfect channel state information. Then, we derive an insightful lower bound for the achievable rate, which becomes tight with a growing number of users. The bound clearly demonstrates the impacts of the number of antennas and the ADC precision, especially for a single-cell mmWave network at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It characterizes the tradeoff among various system parameters. Our analytical results are finally confirmed by extensive computer simulations.
