Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

A Revisit to Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry

We analyze various models for the top quark forward-backward asymmetry ($A^t_{FB}$) at the Tevatron, using the latest CDF measurements on different $A^t_{FB}$s and the total cross section. The axigluon model in Ref. \cite{paul} has difficulties in explaining the large rapidity dependent asymmetry and mass dependent asymmetry simultaneously and the parameter space relevant to $A^t_{FB}$ is ruled out by the latest dijet search at ATLAS. In contrast to Ref. \cite{cp}, we demonstrate that the large parameter space in this model with a $U(1)_d$ flavor symemtry is not ruled out by flavor physics. The $t$-channel flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ \cite{hitoshi}, $W^{\prime}$\cite{waiyee} and diquark \cite{tim} models all have parameter regions that satisfy different $A_{FB}$ measurements within 1 $σ$. However, the heavy $Z^{\prime}$ model which can be marginally consistent with the total cross section is severely constrained by the Tevatron direct search of same-sign top quark pair. The diquark model suffers from too large total cross section and is difficult to fit the $t \bar{t}$ invariant mass distribution. The electroweak precision constraints on the $W'$ model based on $Z'$-$Z$ mixings is estimated and the result is rather weak ($m_{Z'} > 450$ GeV). Therefore, the heavy $W^{\prime}$ model seems to give the best fit for all the measurements. The $W^{\prime}$ model predicts the $t\bar{t}+j$ signal from $tW^{\prime}$ production and is 10%-50% of SM $t\bar{t}$ at the 7 TeV LHC. Such $t+j$ resonance can serve as the direct test of the $W^{\prime}$ model.

Saving fourth generation and baryon number by living long

Recent studies of precision electroweak observables have led to the conclusion that a fourth generation is highly constrained. However, we point out that a long-lived fourth generation can reopen a large portion of the parameter space. In addition, it preserves baryon and lepton asymmetries against sphaleron erasure even if $B-L=0$. It opens up the possibility of exact $B-L$ symmetry and hence Dirac neutrinos. The fourth generation can be observed at the LHC with unique signatures of long-lived particles in the near future.

TeV scale horizontal gauge symmetry and its implications in B-physics

We propose a gauged $U(1)_{H}$ horizontal symmetry around TeV scale that is a subgroup of a $SU(3)_{H}$ horizontal gauge symmetry broken at ${\cal O}(10^{14}) \GeV$. The breaking generates right-handed Majorana neutrino masses through a $SU(3)_H$ sextet scalar. A particular Majorana right-handed neutrino mass matrix explicitly determines the remnant $U(1)_{H}$ at low energy which only couples to $b-s$ and $μ-τ$ in the gauge eigenstate. The dangerous $K-\bar{K}$, $D-\bar{D}$ mixing and $B_s \rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ are kept to be safe because the relevant couplings are suppressed through high powers of small mixing angles in the fermion rotation matrix. Our analysis which applies to the general case shows that the Tevatron di-muon anomaly can be explained through the $B_{s}$ and $B_{d}$ mixing while keeping all the other experimental constraints within 90 \% C. L. For the $B$ meson decay, the $B_{s}\to μ^{\pm}τ^{\mp}$ is the leading leptonic decay channel which is several orders of magnitude below current experimental bound.

Design of dispersive optomechanical coupling and cooling in ultrahigh-Q/V slot-type photonic crystal cavities

We describe the strong optomechanical dynamical interactions in ultrahigh-Q/V slot-type photonic crystal cavities. The dispersive coupling is based on a mode-gap photonic crystal cavities with light localization in an air mode with 0.02(lambda/n)3 modal volumes while preserving optical cavity Q up to 5 x 106. The mechanical mode is modeled to have fundamental resonance omega_m/2pi of 460 MHz and a quality factor Qm estimated at 12,000. For this slot-type optomechanical cavity, the dispersive coupling gom is numerically computed at up to 940 GHz/nm (Lom of 202 nm) for the fundamental optomechanical mode. Dynamical parametric oscillations for both cooling and amplification, in the resolved and unresolved sideband limit, are examined numerically, along with the displacement spectral density and cooling rates for the various operating parameters.

5D UED: Flat and Flavorless

5D UED is not automatically minimally flavor violating. This is due to flavor asymmetric counter-terms required on the branes. Additionally, there are likely to be higher dimensional operators which directly contribute to flavor observables. We document a mostly unsuccessful attempt at utilizing localization in a flat extra dimension to resolve these flavor constraints while maintaining KK-parity as a good quantum number. It is unsuccessful insofar as we seem to be forced to add brane operators in such a way as to precisely mimic the effects of a double throat warped extra dimension. In the course of our efforts, we encounter and present solutions to a problem common to many extra dimensional models in which fields are "doubly localized:" ultra-light modes. Under scrutiny, this issue seems tied to an intrinsic tension between maintaining Kaluza-Klein parity and resolving mass hierarchies via localization.

The Higgs Mechanism and Loop-induced Decays of a Scalar into Two Z Bosons

We discuss general on-shell couplings of a scalar with two Z bosons using an operator analysis. In addition to the operator originated from the Higgs mechanism, two dimension-five operators, one CP-even and one CP-odd, are generated only at the loop-level. Simple formulas are derived for the differential decay distributions when the Z pair subsequently decay into four leptons by computing the helicity amplitudes, from which it is shown the CP-odd operator merely induces a phase shift in the azimuthal angular distribution between the two decay planes of the Z bosons. We also investigate new physics scenarios giving rise to loop-induced decays of a scalar into ZZ pair, and argue that the total decay width of such a scalar would be order-of-magnitude smaller than that of a Higgs boson, should such decays be observed in the early running of the LHC. Therefore, the total decay width alone is a strong indicator of the Higgs nature, or the lack thereof, of a scalar resonance in ZZ final states. In addition, we study the possibility of using the azimuthal angular distribution to disentangle effects among all three operators.

Axigluon as Possible Explanation for $p\bar{p} \to t\bar{t}$ Forward-Backward Asymmetry

A flavor-nonuniversal chiral color model is introduced. It is used for comparison to the recent data on $\bar{p} p \to \bar{t} t$. We concluded that the data are consistent with interpretation as an axigluon exchange within 1$σ$ and a unique rise and fall behavior is predicated with regard to the asymmetry $A^t_{FB}$ as a function of $t \bar{t}$ invariant mass, which can distinguish our model from others before one discovers the axigluon resonance. Further aspects of the model are discussed.

Neutrino Constraints on Inelastic Dark Matter after CDMS II

We discuss the neutrino constraints from solar and terrestrial dark matter (DM) annihilations in the inelastic dark matter (iDM) scenario after the recent CDMS II results. To reconcile the DAMA/LIBRA data with constraints from all other direct experiments, the iDM needs to be light ($m_χ< 100$ GeV) and have a large DM-nucleon cross section ($σ_n \sim$ 10$^{-4}$ pb in the spin-independent (SI) scattering and $σ_n \sim$ 10 pb in the spin-dependent (SD) scattering). The dominant contribution to the iDM capture in the Sun is from scattering off Fe/Al in the SI/SD case. Current bounds from Super-Kamiokande exclude the hard DM annihilation channels, such as $W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, $t\bar{t}$ and $τ^+ τ^-$. For soft channels such as $b\bar{b}$ and $c \bar{c}$, the limits are loose, but could be tested or further constrained by future IceCube plus DeepCore. For neutrino constraints from the DM annihilation in the Earth, due to the weaker gravitational effect of the Earth and inelastic capture condition, the constraint exists only for small mass splitting $δ<$ 40 keV and $m_χ\sim (10, 50)$ GeV even in the $τ^+ τ^-$ channel.

Explorations of the Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry at the Tevatron

We consider the recent measurement of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron, which shows a discrepancy of slightly more than 2$σ$ compared to the SM prediction. We find that $t$-channel exchange of a color sextet or triplet scalar particle can explain the measurement, while leaving the cross section for $t \bar{t}$ production within measured uncertainties. Such particles have good discovery prospects by study of the kinematic structure of $t \bar{t}$+jets at the LHC.

Dark Matter and Collider Physics in Split-UED

Kaluza-Klein dark matter is an attractive weakly interacting massive particle in universal extra dimension model. In the recent extension "split-UED", annihilation of Kaluza-Klein dark matter with a mass range 600-1000 GeV provides excellent fits to the recently observed excesses in cosmic electron and positron fluxes of Pamela, ATIC and Fermi-LAT experiments. The cosmic gamma-ray flux in the same process can be significant around 300 GeV, thus can be observed or constrained by the forthcoming Fermi-LAT diffuse gamma-ray data. The collider signal at the LHC is the resonance in the dijets channels and the large missing energy in the missing energy plus jets.

Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter After Fermi

Kaluza-Klein photon in universal extra dimension models is one of the most attractive dark matter candidates as a weakly interacting massive particle. Having a characteristic split spectrum in split universal extra dimension the relic density of Kaluza-Klein photon with 900 GeV mass is in good agreement with the observed dark matter amount in our Universe. Interestingly Kaluza-Klein photon in the same mass range also provides excellent fits to the recently observed excesses in cosmic electron and positron fluxes. The amount of gamma-ray contributions, mostly from tau decays, can be significant around 300 GeV, thus can be observed or constrained by the forthcoming Fermi-LAT diffuse gamma-ray data.

Topological Dark Matter

Kibble mechanism drastically underestimates the production of topological defects, as confirmed recently in atomic and condensed matter systems. If non-thermally produced, they can be cosmological dark matter of mass 1-10 PeV. If thermalized, skyrmion of mass 1-10 TeV is also a viable dark matter candidate, whose decay may explain $e^\pm$ spectra in cosmic rays recently measured by PAMELA, FERMI, and HESS. Models that produce magnetic monopoles below the inflation scale, such as Pati-Salam unification, are excluded.

Split-UED and Dark Matter

Motivated by the recent observation of the high energy electron and positron excesses in cosmic ray by PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS, we suggest an anomaly-free scenario for the universal extra dimension that localizes the SM quarks and splits the spectrum of KK quarks from KK leptons. When the SM quarks are "well localized" at the boundaries, the most stringent bound of the model ($1/R > 510$ GeV) comes from the resonance search for the Tevatron dijet channels. Even at the early stage of LHC, one can discover the second KK gluon for masses up to 4 TeV.

Dark matter and collider phenomenology of split-UED

We explicitly show that split-universal extra dimension (split-UED), a recently suggested extension of universal extra dimension (UED) model, can nicely explain recent anomalies in cosmic-ray positrons and electrons observed by PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS. Kaluza-Klein (KK) dark matters mainly annihilate into leptons because the hadronic branching fraction is highly suppressed by large KK quark masses and the antiproton flux agrees very well with the observation where no excess is found . The flux of cosmic gamma-rays from pion decay is also highly suppressed and hardly detected in low energy region (E<20 GeV). Collider signatures of colored KK particles at the LHC, especially q_1 q_1 production, are studied in detail. Due to the large split in masses of KK quarks and other particles, hard p_T jets and missing E_T are generated, which make it possible to suppress the standard model background and discover the signals.

Landau-Yang Theorem and Decays of a Z' Boson into Two Z Bosons

We study the decay of a Z' boson into two Z bosons by extending the Landau-Yang theorem to a parent particle decaying into two Z bosons. For a spin-1 parent the theorem predicts: 1) there are only two possible couplings and 2) the normalized differential cross-section depends on kinematics only through a phase shift in the azimuthal angle between the two decay planes of the Z boson. When the parent is a Z' the two possible couplings are anomaly-induced and CP-violating, respectively. At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) effects of the two couplings could be disentangled when both Z bosons decay leptonically.

Top Compositeness at the Tevatron and LHC

We explore the possibility that the right-handed top quark is composite. We examine the consequences that compositeness would have on $t \bar{t}$ production at the Tevatron, and derive a weak constraint on the scale of compositeness of order a few hundred GeV from the $t \bar{t}$ inclusive cross section. More detailed studies of differential properties of $t \bar{t}$ production could potentially improve this limit. We find that a composite top can result in an enhancement of the $t \bar{t} t \bar{t}$ production rate at the LHC (of as much as $10^3$ compared to the Standatd Model four top rate). We explore observables which allow us to extract the four top rate from the backgrounds, and show that the LHC can either discover or constrain top compositeness for wide ranges of parameter space.

Spontaneous Lorentz Violation and Baryogenesis

In the presence of background fields that spontaneously violate Lorentz invariance, a matter-antimatter asymmetry can be generated even in thermal equilibrium. In this paper we systematically investigate models of this type, showing that either high-energy or electroweak versions of baryogenesis are possible, depending on the dynamics of the Lorentz-violating fields. We identify two scenarios of interest: baryogenesis from a weak-scale pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson with intermediate-scale baryon-number violation, and sphaleron-induced baryogenesis driven by a constant-magnitude vector with a late-time phase transition.
