Federated Learning in Active STARS-Aided Uplink Networks

Active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surfaces (ASTARS) have attracted growing research interest due to its ability to alleviate multiplicative fading and reshape the electromagnetic environment across the entire space. In this paper, we utilise ASTARS to assist the federated learning (FL) uplink model transfer and further reduce the number of uploaded parameter counts through over-the-air (OTA) computing techniques. The impact of model aggregation errors on ASTARS-aided FL uplink networks is characterized. We derive an upper bound on the aggregation error of the OTA-FL model and quantify the training loss due to communication errors. Then, we define the performance of OTA-FL as a joint optimization problem that encompasses both the assignment of received beams and the phase shifting of ASTARS, aiming to achieve the maximum learning efficiency and high-quality signal transmission. Numerical results demonstrate that: i) The FL accuracy in ASTARS uplink networks are enhanced compared to that in state-of-the-art networks; ii) The ASTARS enabled FL system achieves the better learning accuracy using fewer active units than other baseline, especially when the dataset is more discrete; and iii) FL accuracy improves with higher amplification power, but excessive amplification makes thermal noise the dominant source of error.

Movable-Element STARS-Aided Secure Communications

A novel movable-element (ME) enabled simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (ME-STARS)-aided secure communication system is investigated. Against the full-space eavesdropping, MEs are deployed at the STARS for enhancing the physical layer security by exploiting higher spatial degrees of freedom. Specifically, a sum secrecy rate maximization problem is formulated, which jointly optimizes the passive beamforming and the MEs positions at the ME-STARS, as well as the active beamforming at the base station. To solve the resultant non-convex optimization problem involving highly-coupled variables, an alternating optimization-based iterative algorithm is developed, decomposing the original problem into three subproblems. In particular, for the MEs position optimization subproblem, a gradient ascent algorithm is employed to iteratively refine the MEs' locations within the confined region. Moreover, the the active and passive beamforming subproblems are solved by employing successive convex approximation. Numerical results unveil that: 1) ME-STARS significantly improves the secrecy performance compared to the conventional STARS with fixed-position elements; and 2) The secrecy rate achieved by the ME-STARS gets saturated within limited movable region size.

Multiple-Mode Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), a promising multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals, has been envisioned as an effective solution for high-mobility communication scenarios. In this paper, we develop a multiple-mode index modulation scheme tailored for AFDM, termed as MM-AFDM-IM, which aims to further improve the spectral and energy efficiencies of AFDM. Specifically, multiple constellation alphabets are selected for different chirp-based subcarriers (chirps). Aside from classical amplitude/phase modulation, additional information bits can be conveyed by the dynamic patterns of both constellation mode selection and chirp activation, without extra energy consumption. Furthermore, we discuss the mode selection strategy and derive an asymptotically tight upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme under maximum-likelihood detection. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of MM-AFDM-IM compared to conventional benchmark schemes.

Pre-Chirp-Domain Index Modulation for Full-Diversity Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing towards 6G

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), tailored as a superior multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals for high-mobility communications, is envisioned as a promising candidate for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless network. AFDM is based on the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) with two adjustable parameters of the chirp signals, termed as the pre-chirp and post-chirp parameters, respectively. We show that the pre-chirp counterpart can be flexibly manipulated for additional degree-of-freedom (DoF). Therefore, this paper proposes a novel AFDM scheme with the pre-chirp index modulation (PIM) philosophy (AFDM-PIM), which can implicitly convey extra information bits through dynamic pre-chirp parameter assignment, thus enhancing both spectral and energy efficiency. Specifically, we first demonstrate that the subcarrier orthogonality is still maintained by applying distinct pre-chirp parameters to various subcarriers in the AFDM modulation process. Inspired by this property, each AFDM subcarrier is constituted with a unique pre-chirp signal according to the incoming bits. By such arrangement, extra binary bits can be embedded into the index patterns of pre-chirp parameter assignment without additional energy consumption. For performance analysis, we derive the asymptotically tight upper bounds on the average bit error rates (BERs) of the proposed schemes with maximum-likelihood (ML) detection, and validate that the proposed AFDM-PIM can achieve the optimal diversity order under doubly dispersive channels. Based on the derivations, we further propose an optimal pre-chirp alphabet design to enhance the BER performance via intelligent optimization algorithms. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-PIM outperforms the classical benchmarks under doubly dispersive channel.

RIS-Assisted Beamfocusing in Near-Field IoT Communication Systems: A Transformer-Based Approach

The massive number of antennas in extremely large aperture array (ELAA) systems shifts the propagation regime of signals in internet of things (IoT) communication systems towards near-field spherical wave propagation. We propose a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted beamfocusing mechanism, where the design of the two-dimensional beam codebook that contains both the angular and distance domains is challenging. To address this issue, we introduce a novel Transformer-based two-stage beam training algorithm, which includes the coarse and fine search phases. The proposed mechanism provides a fine-grained codebook with enhanced spatial resolution, enabling precise beamfocusing. Specifically, in the first stage, the beam training is performed to estimate the approximate location of the device by using a simple codebook, determining whether it is within the beamfocusing range (BFR) or the none-beamfocusing range (NBFR). In the second stage, by using a more precise codebook, a fine-grained beam search strategy is conducted. Experimental results unveil that the precision of the RIS-assisted beamfocusing is greatly improved. The proposed method achieves beam selection accuracy up to 97% at signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 20 dB, and improves 10% to 50% over the baseline method at different SNRs.

Continuous Aperture Array (CAPA)-Based Secure Wireless Communications

A continuous aperture array (CAPA)-based secure communication system is investigated, where a base station equipped with a CAPA transmits signals to a legitimate user under the existence of an eavesdropper. For improving the secrecy performance, the artificial noise (AN) is employed at the BS for the jamming purpose. We aim at maximizing the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the information-bearing and AN source current patterns, subject to the maximum transmit power constraint. To solve the resultant non-convex integral-based functional programming problem, a channel subspace-based approach is first proposed via exploiting the result that the optimal current patterns always lie within the subspace spanned by all users' channel responses. Then, the intractable CAPA continuous source current pattern design problem with an infinite number of optimization variables is equivalently transformed into the channel-subspace weighting factor optimization problem with a finite number of optimization variables. A penalty-based successive convex approximation method is developed for iteratively optimizing the finite-size weighting vectors. To further reduce the computational complexity, we propose a two-stage source current patterns design scheme. Specifically, the information-bearing and AN patterns are first designed using the maximal ration transmission and zero-forcing transmission, respectively. Then, the remaining power allocation is addressed via the one-dimensional search method. Numerical results unveil that 1) the CAPA brings in significant secrecy rate gain compared to the conventional discrete multiple-input multiple-output; 2) the proposed channel subspace-based algorithm outperforms the conventional Fourier-based approach, while sustaining much lower computational complexity; and 3) the two-stage ZF-MRT approach has negligible performance loss for the large transmit power regime.

Movable-Element RIS-Aided Wireless Communications: An Element-Wise Position Optimization Approach

A point-to-point movable element (ME) enabled reconfigurable intelligent surface (ME-RIS) communication system is investigated, where each element position can be flexibly adjusted to create favorable channel conditions. For maximizing the communication rate, an efficient ME position optimization approach is proposed. Specifically, by characterizing the cascaded channel power gain in an element-wise manner, the position of each ME is iteratively updated by invoking the successive convex approximation method. Numerical results unveil that 1) the proposed element-wise ME position optimization algorithm outperforms the gradient descent algorithm; and 2) the ME-RIS significantly improves the communication rate compared to the conventional RIS with fixed-position elements.

Interference-Robust Broadband Rapidly-Varying MIMO Communications: A Knowledge-Data Dual Driven Framework

A novel time-efficient framework is proposed for improving the robustness of a broadband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system against unknown interference under rapidly-varying channels. A mean-squared error (MSE) minimization problem is formulated by optimizing the beamformers employed. Since the unknown interference statistics are the premise for solving the formulated problem, an interference statistics tracking (IST) module is first designed. The IST module exploits both the time- and spatial-domain correlations of the interference-plus-noise (IPN) covariance for the future predictions with data training. Compared to the conventional signal-free space sampling approach, the IST module can realize zero-pilot and low-latency estimation. Subsequently, an interference-resistant hybrid beamforming (IR-HBF) module is presented, which incorporates both the prior knowledge of the theoretical optimization method as well as the data-fed training. Taking advantage of the interpretable network structure, the IR-HBF module enables the simplified mapping from the interference statistics to the beamforming weights. The simulations are executed in high-mobility scenarios, where the numerical results unveil that: 1) the proposed IST module attains promising prediction accuracy compared to the conventional counterparts under different snapshot sampling errors; and 2) the proposed IR-HBF module achieves lower MSE with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Waveguide Division Multiple Access for Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)

A novel concept of waveguide division multiple access (WDMA) is proposed for multi-user pinching-antenna systems (PASS). The key principle of WDMA is to allocate each user with a dedicated waveguide, which is regarded as a new type of radio resources, so as to facilitate multi-user communications. By adjusting the activation positions of pinching antennas (PAs) over each waveguide, the pinching beamforming can be exploited for intended user signal enhancement and inter-user interference mitigation. Considering both ideal continuous and practical discrete PA position activation schemes, a joint power allocation and pinching beamforming optimization problem is formulated for the maximization of the sum rate. An alternating optimization-based algorithm is developed to address the formulated nonconvex problem. For solving the power allocation subproblem, the successive convex approximation method is invoked. For the pinching beamforming design subproblem, a penalty-based gradient ascent algorithm is first developed for the continuous PA activation case. Then, for the discrete PA activation case, a matching theory-based algorithm is proposed to achieve the near-optimal performance but with a low complexity. Numerical results unveil that: 1) For both continuous and discrete activation cases, PASS can achieve a significant performance gain over conventional fixed-position antenna systems; 2) the proposed WDMA can effectively underpin multi-user communications with the near orthogonality in free space achieved by the pinching beamforming; and 3) the performance gap between the discrete and continuous activation cases can be significantly alleviated with practically feasible numbers of PA candidate positions.

Aerial Active STAR-RIS-Aided IoT NOMA Networks

A novel framework of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted active simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) communications with the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed for Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In particular, an active STAR-RIS is deployed onboard to enhance the communication link between the base station (BS) and the IoT devices, and NOMA is utilized for supporting the multi-device connectivity. Based on the proposed framework, a system sum rate maximization problem is formulated for the joint optimization of the active STAR-RIS beamforming, the UAV trajectory design, and the power allocation. To solve the non-convex problem with highly-coupled variables, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to decouple the original problem into three subproblems. Specifically, for the active STAR-RIS beamforming, the amplification coefficient, the power-splitting ratio, and the phase shift are incorporated into a combined variable to simplify the optimization process. Afterwards, the penalty-based method is invoked for handling the non-convex rank-one constraint. For the UAV trajectory design and the power allocation subproblems, the successive convex optimization method is applied for iteratively approximating the local-optimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance compared to the benchmarks in terms of the sum rate; and 2) the UAV-mounted active STAR-RIS can effectively enhance the channel gain from the BS to the IoT devices by the high-quality channel construction and the power compensation.

Exploiting Movable-Element STARS for Wireless Communications

A novel movable-element enabled simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (ME-STARS) communication system is proposed, where ME-STARS elements positions can be adjusted to enhance the degress-of-freedom for transmission and reflection. For each ME-STARS operating protocols, namely energy-splitting (ES), mode switching (MS), and time switching (TS), a weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the active beamforming at the base station (BS) as well as the elements positions and passive beamforming at the ME-STARS. An alternative optimization (AO)-based iterative algorithm is developed to decompose the original non-convex problem into three subproblems. Specifically, the gradient descent algorithm is employed for solving the ME-STARS element position optimization subproblem, and the weighted minimum mean square error and the successive convex approximation methods are invoked for solving the active and passive beamforming subproblems, respectively. It is further demonstrated that the proposed AO algorithm for ES can be extended to solve the problems for MS and TS. Numerical results unveil that: 1) the ME-STARS can significantly improve the WSR compared to the STARS with fixed position elements and the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface with movable elements, thanks to the extra spatial-domain diversity and the higher flexibility in beamforming; and 2) the performance gain of ME-STARS is significant in the scenarios with larger number of users or more scatterers.

On characterizing X-ray detectors for low-dose imaging

The last decade has seen a renewed exploration of semiconductor materials for X-ray detection, foremost focusing on lead-based perovskites and other metal halides as direct-conversion materials and scintillators. However, the reported performance characteristics are often incomplete or misleading in assessing the practical utility of materials. This Perspective offers guidelines for choosing, estimating and presenting the relevant figures of merit. We also provide ready-to-used tools for calculating these figures of merit: MATLAB application, Mathcad worksheet and a website. The X-ray detectors for medical imaging are at focus for their increasing societal value and since they bring about the most stringent requirements as the image shall be acquired at as low as reasonably attainable (i.e. ALARA principle) dose received by the patient.

PET-SQL: A Prompt-Enhanced Two-Round Refinement of Text-to-SQL with Cross-consistency

Recent advancements in Text-to-SQL (Text2SQL) emphasize stimulating the large language models (LLM) on in-context learning, achieving significant results. Nevertheless, they face challenges when dealing with verbose database information and complex user intentions. This paper presents a two-stage framework to enhance the performance of current LLM-based natural language to SQL systems. We first introduce a novel prompt representation, called reference-enhanced representation, which includes schema information and randomly sampled cell values from tables to instruct LLMs in generating SQL queries. Then, in the first stage, question-SQL pairs are retrieved as few-shot demonstrations, prompting the LLM to generate a preliminary SQL (PreSQL). After that, the mentioned entities in PreSQL are parsed to conduct schema linking, which can significantly compact the useful information. In the second stage, with the linked schema, we simplify the prompt's schema information and instruct the LLM to produce the final SQL. Finally, as the post-refinement module, we propose using cross-consistency across different LLMs rather than self-consistency within a particular LLM. Our methods achieve new SOTA results on the Spider benchmark, with an execution accuracy of 87.6%.

Temporal-Spatial Manipulation of Bi-Focal Bi-Chromatic Fields for Terahertz Radiations

Mixing the fundamental ($ω$) and the second harmonic (2$ω$) waves in gas phase is a widely employed technique for emitting terahertz (THz) pulses. The THz generation driven by bi-chromatic fields can be described by the photocurrent model, where the THz generation is attributed to free electrons ionized by the $ω$ field, and the 2$ω$ field provides a perturbation to break the symmetry of the asymptotic momentum of free electrons. However, we find that the THz radiation is amplified by one order of magnitude when driven by bi-focal bi-chromatic fields, contradicting the common understanding of the photocurrent model. Meanwhile, present measurements demonstrate that the THz radiation mainly originates from the plasma created by the 2$ω$ pulses instead of the $ω$ pulses. Energy transfer from the 2$ω$ beam to the THz beam during the THz generation has been observed, validating the major contribution of the 2$ω$ beam. Furthermore, the THz bandwidth has been observed to extensively exceed the bandwidth of the pump pulse, not be explained by the photocurrent model as well. These counterintuitive results indicate that undiscovered physical mechanisms are involved in bi-chromatic THz generation in plasma, presenting a significant challenge for understanding strong-field nonlinear optics and simultaneously expanding various applications.

LiDAR-CS Dataset: LiDAR Point Cloud Dataset with Cross-Sensors for 3D Object Detection

Over the past few years, there has been remarkable progress in research on 3D point clouds and their use in autonomous driving scenarios has become widespread. However, deep learning methods heavily rely on annotated data and often face domain generalization issues. Unlike 2D images whose domains usually pertain to the texture information present in them, the features derived from a 3D point cloud are affected by the distribution of the points. The lack of a 3D domain adaptation benchmark leads to the common practice of training a model on one benchmark (e.g. Waymo) and then assessing it on another dataset (e.g. KITTI). This setting results in two distinct domain gaps: scenarios and sensors, making it difficult to analyze and evaluate the method accurately. To tackle this problem, this paper presents LiDAR Dataset with Cross Sensors (LiDAR-CS Dataset), which contains large-scale annotated LiDAR point cloud under six groups of different sensors but with the same corresponding scenarios, captured from hybrid realistic LiDAR simulator. To our knowledge, LiDAR-CS Dataset is the first dataset that addresses the sensor-related gaps in the domain of 3D object detection in real traffic. Furthermore, we evaluate and analyze the performance using various baseline detectors and demonstrated its potential applications. Project page: https://opendriving.github.io/lidar-cs.

AI Empowered Channel Semantic Acquisition for 6G Integrated Sensing and Communication Networks

Motivated by the need for increased spectral efficiency and the proliferation of intelligent applications, the sixth-generation (6G) mobile network is anticipated to integrate the dual-functions of communication and sensing (C&S). Although the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and mmWave radar share similar multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture for integration, the full potential of dual-function synergy remains to be exploited. In this paper, we commence by overviewing state-of-the-art schemes from the aspects of waveform design and signal processing. Nevertheless, these approaches face the dilemma of mutual compromise between C&S performance. To this end, we reveal and exploit the synergy between C&S. In the proposed framework, we introduce a two-stage frame structure and resort artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve the synergistic gain by designing a joint C&S channel semantic extraction and reconstruction network (JCASCasterNet). With just a cost-effective and energy-efficient single sensing antenna, the proposed scheme achieves enhanced overall performance while requiring only limited pilot and feedback signaling overhead. In the end, we outline the challenges that lie ahead in the future development of integrated sensing and communication networks, along with promising directions for further research.

Multiple-Antenna Aided Aeronautical Communications in Air-Ground Integrated Networks: Channel Estimation, Reliable Transmission, and Multiple Access

To provide seamless coverage during all flight phases, aeronautical communications systems (ACS) have to integrate space-based, air-based, as well as ground-based platforms to formulate aviation-oriented space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs). In continental areas, L-band aeronautical broadband communications (ABC) are gaining popularity for supporting air traffic management (ATM) modernization. However, L-band ABC faces the challenges of spectrum congestion and severe interference due to the legacy systems. To circumvent these, we propose a novel multiple-antenna aided L-band ABC paradigm to tackle the key issues of reliable and high-rate air-to-ground (A2G) transmissions. Specifically, we first introduce the development roadmap of the ABC. Furthermore, we discuss the peculiarities of the L-band ABC propagation environment and the distinctive challenges of the associated multiple-antenna techniques. To overcome these challenges, we propose an advanced multiple-antenna assisted L-band ABC paradigm from the perspective of channel estimation, reliable transmission, and multiple access. Finally, we shed light on the compelling research directions of the aviation component of SAGINs.

Grant-Free NOMA-OTFS Paradigm: Enabling Efficient Ubiquitous Access for LEO Satellite Internet-of-Things

With the blooming of Internet-of-Things (IoT), we are witnessing an explosion in the number of IoT terminals, triggering an unprecedented demand for ubiquitous wireless access globally. In this context, the emerging low-Earth-orbit satellites (LEO-SATs) have been regarded as a promising enabler to complement terrestrial wireless networks in providing ubiquitous connectivity and bridging the ever-growing digital divide in the expected next-generation wireless communications. Nevertheless, the harsh conditions posed by LEO-SATs have imposed significant challenges to the current multiple access (MA) schemes and led to an emerging paradigm shift in system design. In this article, we first provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art MA schemes and investigate their limitations in the context of LEO-SATs. To this end, we propose a novel next generation MA (NGMA), which amalgamates the grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) mechanism and the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) waveform, for simplifying the connection procedure with reduced access latency and enhanced Doppler-robustness. Critical open challenging issues and future directions are finally presented for further technical development.
