Global well-posedness of strong solutions to a model for the morning glory cloud

In this paper, we investigate the global well-posedness of strong solution to a model recently derived by Constantin-Johnson \cite{CaJo} which describes the nonlinear wave propagation in the troposphere, especially for the morning glory cloud. Assuming that the initial velocity $v_0\in H^1$ and the thermodynamic forcing term $K\in L^2(0,T;L^2)$, we show that there exists a unique global strong solution to the initial boundary value problem of this system. Similar result was only known before for sufficiently small initial data in the existing literature.

Local well-posedness of strong solutions to the non-isentropic compressible primitive equations with vertical diffusion

Due to the absence of dynamical equation in the vertical momentum component of the primitive equations (PEs) of atmospheric dynamics, the vertical component of the velocity can be recovered only from the information on the other physical quantities, while utilizing the hydrostatic balance. This causes one spatial derivative loss while leads to a stronger nonlinearity, comparing to the classic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. As a result, the mathematical analysis on the compressible primitive equations is mathematically more challenging than that on the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the non-isentropic compressible primitive equations with only vertical diffusion for the temperature, but without gravity. Local existence and uniqueness as well as the continuous dependence on the initial data of strong solutions are established for any suitably regular initial data. The initial velocity and pressure are assumed here to be of one order derivative higher regularity than that of the initial density.

Global well-posedness of the inviscid resistive isentropic compressible MHD system

Due to the absence of dissipation mechanism to the inviscid compressible systems, it is a challenging problem to prove their global solvability. In this paper, we are concerned with the initial-boundary value problem to the inviscid and resistive isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system on three dimensional torus $\mathbb T^3$. Global well-posedness and large time behavior of solutions are established in the first time for the isentropic setting, under the condition that the initial data $(ρ_0, u_0, H_0)$ is a small perturbation around the constant state $(1, 0, w)$, with $w$ satisfying the Diophantine condition. The main observation of this paper is that the spatial derivatives of the density along directions perpendicular to $w$ are dissipated. Such dissipation mechanism is generated from the interaction between the velocity field and the background magnetic field. This verifies the weak stabilizing effects of the magnetic filed on the dynamics in the scenario of inviscid isentropic flows. Due to different dissipation mechanisms for the density, velocity, and magnetic field, three ties of dissipative energies are designed, that is, high order Sobolev norms of the perturbed magnetic field, intermediate order Sobolev norms of the perturbed density, and low order Sobolev norms of the velocity field.

Global well-posedness of planar MHD system without heat conductivity

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the planar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system with both constant viscosity and constant resistivity but without heat conductivity. Global well-posedness of strong solutions in the presence of natural far field vacuum, due to the finiteness of the mass, is established for any large initial data of suitable smoothness. Density discontinuity and interior vacuum of either point-like or piecewise-like are also allowed. Technically, the entropy-type energy inequality, which although is commonly used as a basic tool in existing literature on the planar MHD system, is not workable in the current paper, as it is not consistent with the far field vacuum. Instead, besides making full use of advantages of the effective viscous flux as in \cite{LJK1DNONHEAT,LIJLIM2022,LIXINADV}, a new coupling structure, between the longitudinal velocity $u$ and the transversal magnetic field $\bm h$, is exploited to recover the dissipative estimate on $\bm h$.

MAGE: A Multi-task Architecture for Gaze Estimation with an Efficient Calibration Module

Eye gaze can provide rich information on human psychological activities, and has garnered significant attention in the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). However, existing gaze estimation methods merely predict either the gaze direction or the Point-of-Gaze (PoG) on the screen, failing to provide sufficient information for a comprehensive six Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) gaze analysis in 3D space. Moreover, the variations of eye shape and structure among individuals also impede the generalization capability of these methods. In this study, we propose MAGE, a Multi-task Architecture for Gaze Estimation with an efficient calibration module, to predict the 6-DoF gaze information that is applicable for the real-word HRI. Our basic model encodes both the directional and positional features from facial images, and predicts gaze results with dedicated information flow and multiple decoders. To reduce the impact of individual variations, we propose a novel calibration module, namely Easy-Calibration, to fine-tune the basic model with subject-specific data, which is efficient to implement without the need of a screen. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the public MPIIFaceGaze, EYEDIAP, and our built IMRGaze datasets.

Nematic liquid crystals: Ericksen-Leslie theory with general stress tensors

The Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystal flows in case of an isothermal and incompressible fluid with general Leslie stress and anisotropic elasticity, i.e. with general Ericksen stress tensor, is shown for the first time to be strongly well-posed. Of central importance is a fully nonlinear boundary condition for the director field, which, in this generality, is necessary to guarantee that the system fulfills physical principles. The system is shown to be locally, strongly well-posed in the $L_p$-setting. More precisely, the existence and uniqueness of a local, strong $L_p$-solution to the general system is proved and it is shown that the director $d$ satisfies $|d|_2\equiv 1$ provided this holds for its initial data $d_0$. In addition, the solution is shown to depend continuously on the data. The results are proven without any structural assumptions on the Leslie coefficients and in particular without assuming Parodi's relation.

Global well-posedness of the 3D primitive equations with horizontal viscosity and vertical diffusivity II: close to $H^1$ initial data

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the three-dimensional primitive equations for the oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal eddy viscosities in the horizontal momentum equations and only vertical diffusivity in the temperature equation in the domain $Ω=M\times(-h,h)$, with $M=(0,1)\times(0,1)$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established, for any initial data $(v_0,T_0) \in H^1(Ω)\cap L^\infty(Ω)$ with $(\partial_z v_0, \nabla_H T_0) \in L^q(Ω)$ and $v_0 \in L_z^1(B^1_{q,2}(M))$, for some $q \in (2,\infty)$, by using delicate energy estimates and maximal regularity estimate in the anisotropic setting.

A Scoping Review of Internal Migration and Left-behind Children's Wellbeing in China

Children's well-being of immigrants is facing several challenges related to physical, mental, and educational risks, which may obstacle human capital accumulation and further development. In rural China, due to the restriction of Hukou registration system, nearly 9 million left-behind children (LBC) are in lack of parental care and supervision in 2020 when their parents internally migrate out for work. Through the systematic scoping review, this study provides a comprehensive literature summary and concludes the overall negative effects of parental migration on LBC's physical, mental (especially for left-behind girls), and educational outcomes (especially for left-behind boys). Noticeably, both parents' and mother's migration may exacerbate LBC's disadvantages. Furthermore, remittance from migrants and more family-level and social support may help mitigate the negative influence. Finally, we put forward theoretical and realistic implications which may shed light on potential research directions. Further studies, especially quantitative studies, are needed to conduct a longitudinal survey, combine the ongoing Hukou reform in China, and simultaneously focus on left-behind children and migrant children.

Entropy-bounded solutions to the Cauchy problem of compressible planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamics equations with far field vacuum

We investigate the Cauchy problem to the compressible planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations with zero heat conduction. The global existence of strong solutions to such a model has been established by Li and Li (J. Differential Equations 316: 136--157, 2022). However, to our best knowledge, so far there is no result on the behavior of the entropy near the vacuum region for this model. The main novelty of this paper is to give a positive response to this problem. More precisely, by a series of a priori estimates, especially the singular type estimates, we show that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density.

Instantaneous unboundedness of the entropy and uniform positivity of the temperature for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with fast decay density

This paper concerns the physical behaviors of any solutions to the one dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for viscous and heat conductive gases with constant viscosities and heat conductivity for fast decaying density at far fields only. First, it is shown that the specific entropy becomes not uniformly bounded immediately after the initial time, as long as the initial density decays to vacuum at the far field at the rate not slower than $O\left(\frac1{|x|^{\ell_ρ}}\right)$ with $\ell_ρ>2$. Furthermore, for faster decaying initial density, i.e., $\ell_ρ\geq4$, a sharper result is discovered that the absolute temperature becomes uniformly positive at each positive time, no matter whether it is uniformly positive or not initially, and consequently the corresponding entropy behaves as $O(-\log(\varrho_0(x)))$ at each positive time, independent of the boundedness of the initial entropy. Such phenomena are in sharp contrast to the case with slowly decaying initial density of the rate no faster than $O(\frac1{x^2})$, for which our previous works \cite{LIXINADV,LIXINCPAM,LIXIN3DK} show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy can be propagated for all positive time and thus the temperature decays to zero at the far field. These give a complete answer to the problem concerning the propagation of uniform boundedness of the entropy for the heat conductive ideal gases and, in particular, show that the algebraic decay rate $2$ of the initial density at the far field is sharp for the uniform boundedness of the entropy. The tools to prove our main results are based on some scaling transforms, including the Kelvin transform, and a Hopf type lemma for a class of degenerate equations with possible unbounded coefficients.

Global well-posedness for the thermodynamically refined passively transported nonlinear moisture dynamics with phase changes

In this work we study the global solvability of moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds. We thereby in comparison to previous studies [Hittmeir-Klein-Li-Titi (2017)] take into account the different gas constants for dry air and water vapor as well as the different heat capacities for dry air, water vapor and liquid water, which leads to a much stronger coupling of the moisture balances and the thermodynamic equation. This refined thermodynamic setting has been demonstrated to be essential e.g. in the case of deep convective cloud columns in [Hittmeir-Klein (2017)]. The more complicated structure requires careful derivations of sufficient a priori estimates for proving global existence and uniqueness of solutions.

Global small solutions to heat conductive compressible nematic liquid crystal system: smallness on a scaling invariant quantity

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the three dimensional heat conducting compressible nematic liquid crystal system in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far fields. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the condition that the scaling invariant quantity $ (\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)\big[\|ρ_0\|_3+(\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)^2(\|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0\|_2^2+ \|\nabla d_0\|_2^2)\big] \big[\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+(\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)(\|\sqrt{ρ_0}E_0\|_2^2 + \|\nabla^2 d_0\|_2^2)\big]$ is sufficiently small with the smallness depending only on the parameters appeared in the system.

Propagation of uniform boundedness of entropy and inhomogeneous regularities for viscous and heat conductive gases with far field vacuum in three dimensions

Due to the highly degeneracy and singularities of the entropy equation, the physical entropy for viscous and heat conductive polytropic gases behave singularly in the presence of vacuum and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the uniform boundedness of the entropy and the inhomogeneous Sobolev regularities of the velocity and temperature can be propagated for viscous and heat conductive gases in $\mathbb R^3$, provided that the initial vacuum occurs only at far fields with suitably slow decay of the initial density. Precisely, it is proved that for any strong solution to the Cauchy problem of the heat conductive compressible Navier--Stokes equations, the corresponding entropy keeps uniformly bounded and the $L^2$ regularities of the velocity and temperature can be propagated, up to the existing time of the solution, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{|x|^2})$. The main tools are some singularly weighted energy estimates and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.

An attempt at axiomatization of extending mechanism of solutions to the fluid dynamical systems

Note that some classic fluid dynamical systems such as the Navier-Stokes equations, Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Boussinesq equations, and etc are observably different from each other but obey some energy inequalities of the similar type. In this paper, we attempt to axiomatize the extending mechanism of solutions to these systems, merely starting from several basic axiomatized conditions such as the local existence, joint property of solutions and some energy inequalities. The results established have nothing to do with the concrete forms of the systems and, thus, give the extending mechanisms in a unified way to all systems obeying the axiomatized conditions. The key tools are several new multiplicative interpolation inequalities of Besov type, which have their own interests.

Local existence and uniqueness of heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum and without initial compatibility conditions

In this paper, we investigate the initial-boundary value problem to the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions is established with any such initial data that the initial density $ρ_0$, velocity $u_0$, and temperature $θ_0$ satisfy $ρ_0\in W^{1,q}$, with $q\in(3,6)$, $u_0\in H^1$, and $\sqrt{ρ_0}θ_0\in L^2$. The initial density is assumed to be only nonnegative and thus the initial vacuum is allowed. In addition to the necessary regularity assumptions, we do not require any initial compatibility conditions such as those proposed in (Y. Cho and H. Kim, \emph{Existence results for viscous polytropic fluids with vacuum}, J. Differential Equations {\bf 228} (2006), no.~2, 377--411.), which although are widely used in many previous works but put some inconvenient constraints on the initial data. Due to the weaker regularities of the initial data and the absence of the initial compatibility conditions, leading to weaker regularities of the solutions compared with those in the previous works, the uniqueness of solutions obtained in the current paper does not follow from the arguments used in the existing literatures. Our proof of the uniqueness of solutions is based on the following new idea of two-stages argument: (i) showing that the difference of two solutions (or part of their components) with the same initial data is controlled by some power function of the time variable; (ii) carrying out some singular-in-time weighted energy differential inequalities fulfilling the structure of the Grönwall inequality. The existence is established in the Euler coordinates, while the uniqueness is proved in the Lagrangian coordinates first and then transformed back to the Euler coordinates.

Global well-posedness of $z$-weak solutions to the primitive equations without vertical diffusivity

In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem in a cylindrical domain to the three dimensional primitive equations with full eddy viscosity in the momentum equations but with only horizontal eddy diffusivity in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of $z$-weak solution is established for any such initial datum that itself and its vertical derivative belong to $L^2$. This not only extends the results in \cite{Cao5} from the spatially periodic case to general cylindrical domains but also weakens the regularity assumptions on the initial data which are required to be $H^2$ there.

The primitive equations approximation of the anisotropic horizontally viscous Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we provide rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation and the derivation of primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the anisotropic horizontal viscosity regime. Setting $\varepsilon >0$ to be the small aspect ratio of the vertical to the horizontal scales of the domain, we investigate the case when the horizontal and vertical viscosities in the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are of orders $O(1)$ and $O(\varepsilon^α)$, respectively, with $α>2$, for which the limiting system is the primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. In particular we show that for "well prepared" initial data the solutions of the scaled incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations converge strongly, in any finite interval of time, to the corresponding solutions of the anisotropic primitive equations with only horizontal viscosities, as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, and that the convergence rate is of order $O\left(\varepsilon^\frac\beta2\right)$, where $β=\min\{α-2,2\}$. Note that this result is different from the case $α=2$ studied in [Li, J.; Titi, E.S.: \emph{The primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier-Stokes equations: Rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation}, J. Math. Pures Appl., \textbf{124} \rm(2019), 30--58], where the limiting system is the primitive equations with full viscosities and the convergence is globally in time and its rate of order $O\left(\varepsilon\right)$.

Global strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity, and establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions with large initial data. The key ingredient of the proof is to establish the a priori estimates on the effective viscous flux and a newly introduced "transverse effective viscous flux" vector field inducted by the transverse magnetic field. The initial density is assumed only to be uniformly bounded and of finite mass and, in particular, the vacuum and discontinuities of the density are allowed.
