The primitive equations approximation of the anisotropic horizontally viscous Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we provide rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation and the derivation of primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the anisotropic horizontal viscosity regime. Setting $\varepsilon >0$ to be the small aspect ratio of the vertical to the horizontal scales of the domain, we investigate the case when the horizontal and vertical viscosities in the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are of orders $O(1)$ and $O(\varepsilon^α)$, respectively, with $α>2$, for which the limiting system is the primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero. In particular we show that for "well prepared" initial data the solutions of the scaled incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations converge strongly, in any finite interval of time, to the corresponding solutions of the anisotropic primitive equations with only horizontal viscosities, as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, and that the convergence rate is of order $O\left(\varepsilon^\frac\beta2\right)$, where $β=\min\{α-2,2\}$. Note that this result is different from the case $α=2$ studied in [Li, J.; Titi, E.S.: \emph{The primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier-Stokes equations: Rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation}, J. Math. Pures Appl., \textbf{124} \rm(2019), 30--58], where the limiting system is the primitive equations with full viscosities and the convergence is globally in time and its rate of order $O\left(\varepsilon\right)$.

Global strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations with large initial data

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the planar non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations without heat conductivity, and establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions with large initial data. The key ingredient of the proof is to establish the a priori estimates on the effective viscous flux and a newly introduced "transverse effective viscous flux" vector field inducted by the transverse magnetic field. The initial density is assumed only to be uniformly bounded and of finite mass and, in particular, the vacuum and discontinuities of the density are allowed.

Global Well-posedness for the Primitive Equations Coupled to Nonlinear Moisture Dynamics with Phase Changes

In this work we study the global solvability of the primitive equations for the atmosphere coupled to moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds, where water is present in the form of water vapor and in the liquid state as cloud water and rain water. This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of autoconversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in \cite{KM} and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler \cite{Ke} and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz \cite{GS}. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In \cite{HKLT} we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi \cite{CT}, who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

Entropy-bounded solutions to the one-dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations with far field vacuum

In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the one dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{x^2})$. The main tools of proving the uniform boundedness of the entropy are some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique for some classes of degenerate parabolic equations. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.

Global well-posedness of non-heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 1D

In this paper, the initial-boundary value problem of the 1D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with positive constant viscosity but with zero heat conductivity is considered. Global well-posedness is established for any $H^1$ initial data. The initial density is required to be nonnegative, which is not necessary to be uniformly away from vacuum. This not only generalizes the well-known result of Kazhikhov--Shelukhin (Kazhikhov, A.~V.; Shelukhin, V.~V.: \emph{Unique global solution with respect to time of initial boundary value problems for one-dimensional equations of a viscous gas}, J.\,Appl.\,Math.\,Mech., \bf41 \rm(1977), 273--282.) from the heat conductive case to the non-heat conductive case, and the initial vacuum is allowed.

Finite time blow up of compressible Navier-Stokes equations on half space or outside a fixed ball

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for ideal gases without heat conduction in the half space or outside a fixed ball in $\mathbb R^N$, with $N\geq1$. We prove that any classical solutions $(ρ, u, θ)$, in the class $C^1([0,T]; H^m(Ω))$, $m>[\frac N2]+2$, with bounded from below initial entropy and compactly supported initial density, which allows to touch the physical boundary, must blow-up in finite time, as long as the initial mass is positive. This paper extends the classical reault by Xin [CPAM, 1998], in which the Cauchy probelm is considered, to the case that with physical boundary.

Global small solutions of heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum: smallness on scaling invariant quantity

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far field. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the assumption, among some other regularity and compatibility conditions, that the scaling invariant quantity $\|ρ_0\|_\infty(\|ρ_0\|_3+\|ρ_0\|_\infty^2\|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0\|_2^2)(\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+\|ρ_0\|_\infty\|\sqrt{ρ_0}E_0\|_2^2)$ is sufficiently small, with the smallness depending only on the parameters $R, γ, μ, λ,$ and $κ$ in the system. The total mass can be either finite or infinite.

Local well-posedness of isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum

In this paper, the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is proved with the initial date being allowed to have vacuum. The main contribution of this paper is that the well-posedness is established without assuming any compatibility condition on the initial data, which was widely used before in many literatures concerning the well-posedness of compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum.

Global well-posedness of the 1D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant heat conductivity and nonnegative density

In this paper we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for idea gases. Both the viscous and heat conductive coefficients are assumed to be positive constants, and the initial density is allowed to have vacuum. Global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions is established for any $H^2$ initial data, which generalizes the well-known result of Kazhikhov--Shelukhin (Kazhikhov, A. V.; Shelukhin, V. Entropy-bounded solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations: with far field vacuum

The entropy is one of the fundamental states of a fluid and, in the viscous case, the equation that it satisfies is highly singular in the region close to the vacuum. In spite of its importance in the gas dynamics, the mathematical analyses on the behavior of the entropy near the vacuum region, were rarely carried out; in particular, in the presence of vacuum, either at the far field or at some isolated interior points, it was unknown if the entropy remains its boundedness. The results obtained in this paper indicate that the ideal gases retain their uniform boundedness of the entropy, locally or globally in time, if the vacuum occurs at the far field only and the density decays slowly enough at the far field. Precisely, we consider the Cauchy problem to the one-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations without heat conduction, and establish the local and global existence and uniqueness of entropy-bounded solutions, in the presence of vacuum at the far field only. It is also shown that, different from the case that with compactly supported initial density, the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with slowly decaying initial density, can propagate the regularities in the inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces.

The primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier-Stokes equations: rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation

An important feature of the planetary oceanic dynamics is that the aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is very small. As a result, the hydrostatic approximation (balance), derived by performing the formal small aspect ratio limit to the Navier-Stokes equations, is considered as a fundamental component in the primitive equations of the large-scale ocean. In this paper, we justify rigorously the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the primitive equations. Specifically, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equations, after being scaled appropriately by the small aspect ratio parameter of the physical domain, converge strongly to the primitive equations, globally and uniformly in time, and the convergence rate is of the same order as the aspect ratio parameter. This result validates the hydrostatic approximation for the large-scale oceanic dynamics. Notably, only the weak convergence of this small aspect ratio limit was rigorously justified before.

Global well-posedness of the 3D primitive equations with horizontal viscosity and vertical diffusivity

In this paper, we consider the 3D primitive equations of oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal eddy viscosities in the horizontal momentum equations and only vertical diffusivity in the temperature equation. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established for any initial data such that the initial horizontal velocity $v_0\in H^2(Ω)$ and the initial temperature $T_0\in H^1(Ω)\cap L^\infty(Ω)$ with $\nabla_HT_0\in L^q(Ω)$, for some $q\in(2,\infty)$. Moreover, the strong solutions enjoy correspondingly more regularities if the initial temperature belongs to $H^2(Ω)$. The main difficulties are the absence of the vertical viscosity and the lack of the horizontal diffusivity, which, interact with each other, thus causing the "\,mismatching\," of regularities between the horizontal momentum and temperature equations. To handle this "mismatching" of regularities, we introduce several auxiliary functions, i.e., $η, θ, φ,$ and $ψ$ in the paper, which are the horizontal curls or some appropriate combinations of the temperature with the horizontal divergences of the horizontal velocity $v$ or its vertical derivative $\partial_zv$. To overcome the difficulties caused by the absence of the horizontal diffusivity, which leads to the requirement of some $L^1_t(W^{1,\infty}_\textbf{x})$-type a priori estimates on $v$, we decompose the velocity into the "temperature-independent" and temperature-dependent parts and deal with them in different ways, by using the logarithmic Sobolev inequalities of the Brézis-Gallouet-Wainger and Beale-Kato-Majda types, respectively. Specifically, a logarithmic Sobolev inequality of the limiting type, introduced in our previous work [12], is used, and a new logarithmic type Gronwall inequality is exploited.

Global well-posedness for passively transported nonlinear moisture dynamics with phase changes

We study a moisture model for warm clouds that has been used by Klein and Majda as a basis for multiscale asymptotic expansions for deep convective phenomena. These moisture balance equations correspond to a bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler and of Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz, in which water is present in the gaseous state as water vapor and in the liquid phase as cloud water and rain water. It thereby contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of autoconversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. Phase changes are associated with enormous amounts of latent heat and therefore provide a strong coupling to the thermodynamic equation. In this work we assume the velocity field to be given and prove rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture model with viscosity, diffusion and heat conduction. To guarantee local well-posedness we first need to establish local existence results for linear parabolic equations, subject to the Robin boundary conditions on the cylindric type of domains under consideration. We then derive a priori estimates, for proving the maximum principle, using the Stampacchia method, as well as the iterative method by Alikakos to obtain uniform boundedness. The evaporation term is of power law type, with an exponent in general less or equal to one and therefore making the proof of uniqueness more challenging. However, these difficulties can be circumvented by introducing new unknowns, which satisfy the required cancellation and monotonicity properties in the source terms.

Strong solutions to the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal dissipation: near $H^1$ initial data

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional primitive equations for oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with only horizontal viscosity and horizontal diffusivity. We establish the local, in time, well-posedness of strong solutions, for any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1$, by using the local, in space, type energy estimate. We also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions for this system, with any initial data $(v_0, T_0)\in H^1\cap L^\infty$, such that $\partial_zv_0\in L^m$, for some $m\in(2,\infty)$, by using the logarithmic type anisotropic Sobolev inequality and a logarithmic type Gronwall inequality. This paper improves the previous results obtained in [Cao, C.; Li, J.; Titi, E.S.: Global well-posedness of the 3D primitive equations with only horizontal viscosity and diffusivity, Comm. Pure Appl.Math., Vol. 69 (2016), 1492-1531.], where the initial data $(v_0, T_0)$ was assumed to have $H^2$ regularity.

Local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with nonnegative density

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Local strong solutions are established, for any initial data $(ρ_0, u_0)\in (W^{1,γ} \cap L^\infty)\times H_{0,σ}^1$, with $γ>1$, and if $γ\geq2$, then the strong solution is unique. The initial density is allowed to be nonnegative, and in particular, the initial vacuum is allowed. The assumption on the initial data is weaker than the previous widely used one that $(ρ_0, u_0)\in (H^1 \cap L^\infty )\times(H_{0,σ}^1 \cap H^2)$, and no compatibility condition is required.

Recent Advances Concerning Certain Class of Geophysical Flows

This paper is devoted to reviewing several recent developments concerning certain class of geophysical models, including the primitive equations (PEs) of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics and a tropical atmosphere model. The PEs for large-scale oceanic and atmospheric dynamics are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the heat convection by adopting the Boussinesq and hydrostatic approximations, while the tropical atmosphere model considered here is a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture. We are mainly concerned with the global well-posedness of strong solutions to these systems, with full or partial viscosity, as well as certain singular perturbation small parameter limits related to these systems, including the small aspect ratio limit from the Navier-Stokes equations to the PEs, and a small relaxation-parameter in the tropical atmosphere model. These limits provide a rigorous justification to the hydrostatic balance in the PEs, and to the relaxation limit of the tropical atmosphere model, respectively. Some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions, and the global well-posedness of weak solutions with certain class of discontinuous initial data, to the PEs are also presented.

Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to viscous primitive equations for certain class of discontinuous initial data

We establish some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions to the viscous primitive equations, and as an application, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, with the initial data taken as small $L^\infty$ perturbations of functions in the space $X=\left\{v\in (L^6(Ω))^2|\partial_zv\in (L^2(Ω))^2\right\}$; in particular, the initial data are allowed to be discontinuous. Our result generalizes in a uniform way the result on the uniqueness of weak solutions with continuous initial data and that of the so-called $z$-weak solutions.
