Effective field theory of waterfall in hybrid inflation

We examine the validity of the classical approximation of the waterfall phase transition in hybrid inflation from an effective field theory (EFT) point of view. The EFT is constructed by integrating out the waterfall field fluctuations, up to one-loop order in the perturbative expansion. Assuming slow-roll conditions are obeyed, right after the onset of the waterfall phase, we find the backreaction of the waterfall field fluctuations to the evolution of the system can be dominant. In this case the classical approximation is completely spoiled. We derive the necessary constraint that ensures the validity of the EFT.

Potential reconstruction from general power spectrum in single-field inflation

We suggest a new method to reconstruct, within canonical single-field inflation, the inflaton potential directly from the primordial power spectrum which may deviate significantly from near scale-invariance. Our approach relies on a more generalized slow-roll approximation than the standard one, and can probe the properties of the inflaton potential reliably. We give a few examples for reconstructing potential and discuss the validity of our method.

Analytic integral solutions for induced gravitational waves

We present analytic integral solutions for the second-order induced gravitational waves (GWs). After presenting all the possible second-order source terms, we calculate explicitly the solutions for the GWs induced by the linear scalar and tensor perturbations during matter- and radiation-dominated epochs.

Instability of de Sitter space under thermal radiation in different vacua

We study the instability of de Sitter space-time (dS) under thermal radiation in different vacua. We argue that the mode function solution of a scalar field in four-dimensional dS can be separated into the incoming and outgoing modes. Different vacua for dS are realized by different combinations of positive frequency modes assigned to each solution. For a minimally coupled massless scalar field, we explicitly compute the behavior of the mode function and the corresponding energy-momentum tensor in the Unruh vacuum near the horizon, and find that the horizon area increases (decreases) in time when the incoming (outgoing) mode contributes to thermal flux.

Axion-driven hybrid inflation over a barrier

We present a scenario where an axion-like field drives inflation until a potential barrier, which keeps a waterfall field at the origin, disappears and a waterfall transition occurs. Such a barrier separates the scale of inflation from that of the waterfall transition. We find the observed spectrum of the cosmic microwave background indicates that the decay constant of the inflaton is well below the Planck scale, with the inflationary Hubble parameter spanning a wide range. Further, our model involves dark matter candidates including the inflaton itself. Also, for a complex waterfall field, we can determine cosmologically the Peccei-Quinn scale associated with the strong CP problem.

Galaxy Power Spectrum in General Relativity

We present the galaxy power spectrum in general relativity. Using a novel approach, we derive the galaxy power spectrum taking into account all the relativistic effects in observations. In particular, we show independently of survey geometry that relativistic effects yield no divergent terms (proportional to $k^{-4}P_m(k)$ or $k^{-2}P_m(k)$ on all scales) that would mimic the signal of primordial non-Gaussianity. This cancellation of such divergent terms is indeed expected from the equivalence principle, meaning that any perturbation acting as a uniform gravity on the scale of the experiment cannot be measured. We find that the unphysical infrared divergence obtained in previous calculations occurred only due to not considering all general relativistic contributions consistently. Despite the absence of divergent terms, general relativistic effects represented by non-divergent terms alter the galaxy power spectrum at large scales (smaller than the horizon scale). In our numerical computation of the full galaxy power spectrum, we show the deviations from the standard redshift-space power spectrum due to these non-divergent corrections. We conclude that, as relativistic effects significantly alter the galaxy power spectrum at $k\lesssim k_{eq}$, they need to be taken into account in the analysis of large-scale data.

Effective Field Theory of Anisotropic Inflation and Beyond

We develop an effective-field-theory (EFT) framework for inflation with various symmetry breaking pattern. As a prototype, we formulate anisotropic inflation from the perspective of EFT and construct an effective action of the Nambu-Goldstone bosons for the broken time translation and rotation symmetries. We also calculate the statistical anisotropy in the scalar two-point correlation function for concise examples of the effective action.

Second-order effective energy-momentum tensor of gravitational scalar perturbations with perfect fluid

We investigate the second-order gravitational scalar perturbations for a barotropic fluid. We derive the effective energy-momentum tensor described by the quadratic terms of the gravitational and the matter perturbations. We show that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor is gauge dependent. We impose three gauge conditions (longitudinal, spatially-flat, and comoving gauges) for dust and radiation. The resulting energy-momentum tensor is described only by a gauge invariant variable, but the functional form depends on the gauge choice. In the matter-dominated epoch with dust-like fluid background, the second-order effective energy density and pressure of the perturbations evolve as 1/a^2 in all three gauge choices, like the curvature density of the Universe, but they do not provide the correct equation of state. The value of this parameter depends also on the gauge choice. In the radiation-dominated epoch, the perturbations in the short-wave limit behave in the same way as the radiation-like fluid in the longitudinal and the spatially-flat gauges. However, they behave in a different way in the comoving gauge. As a whole, we conclude that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor of the scalar perturbation is strictly gauge dependent.

Quantum nature of Wigner function for inflationary tensor perturbations

We study the Wigner function for the inflationary tensor perturbation defined in the real phase space. We compute explicitly the Wigner function including the contributions from the cubic self-interaction Hamiltonian of tensor perturbations. Then we argue that it is no longer an appropriate description for the probability distribution in the sense that quantum nature allows negativity around vanishing phase variables. This comes from the non-Gaussian wavefunction in the mixed state as a result of the non-linear interaction between super- and sub-horizon modes. We also show that this is related to the explicit infrared divergence in the Wigner function, in contrast to the trace of the density matrix.

Quantum non-linear evolution of inflationary tensor perturbations

We study the quantum mechanical evolution of the tensor perturbations during inflation with non-linear tensor interactions. We first obtain the Lindblad terms generated by non-linear interactions by tracing out unobservable sub-horizon modes. Then we calculate explicitly the reduced density matrix for the super-horizon modes, and show that the probability of maintaining the unitarity of the squeezed state decreases in time. The decreased probability is transferred to other elements of the reduced density matrix including off-diagonal ones, so the evolution of the reduced density matrix describes the quantum-to-classical transition of the tensor perturbations. This is different from the classicality accomplished by the squeezed state, the suppression of the non-commutative effect, which is originated from the quadratic, linear interaction, and also maintains the unitarity. The quantum-to-classical transition occurs within 5 - 10 e-folds, faster than the curvature perturbation.

Distribution of primordial black holes and 21cm signature

We show that the number of primordial black holes (PBHs) which is originated from primordial density perturbations with moderately-tilted power spectrum fluctuates following the log-normal distribution, while it follows the Poisson distribution if the spectrum is steeply blue. The log-normal, as well as the Poisson, fluctuation of the PBH number behaves as an isocurvature mode and affects the matter power spectrum and the halo mass function in a different way from those for the Poisson case. The future 21cm observation can potentially put a stronger constraint on the PBH fraction than the current one in a wide mass range, $10^{-5}M_\odot$--$10M_\odot$.

Consistency relations in multi-field inflation

We study the consequences of spatial coordinate transformation in multi-field inflation. Among the spontaneously broken de Sitter isometries, only dilatation in the comoving gauge preserves the form of the metric and thus results in quantum-protected Slavnov-Taylor identities. We derive the corresponding consistency relations between correlation functions of cosmological perturbations in two different ways, by the connected and one-particle-irreducible Green's functions. The lowest-order consistency relations are explicitly given, and we find that even in multi-field inflation the consistency relations in the soft limit are independent of the detail of the matter sector.

Natural cliff inflation

We propose a novel scenario of inflation, in which the inflaton is identified as the lightest mode of an angular field in a compactified fifth dimension. The periodic effective potential exhibits exponentially flat plateaus, so that a sub-Planckian field excursion without hilltop initial conditions is naturally realized. We can obtain consistent predictions with observations on the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Exact non-linear equations for cosmological perturbations

We present a complete set of exact and fully non-linear equations describing all three types of cosmological perturbations -- scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. We derive the equations in a thoroughly gauge-ready manner, so that any spatial and temporal gauge conditions can be employed. The equations are completely general without any physical restriction except that we assume a flat homogeneous and isotropic universe as a background. We also comment briefly on the application of our formulation to the non-expanding Minkowski background.

Cosmological stochastic Higgs stabilization

We show that the stochastic evolution of an interacting system of the Higgs and a spectator scalar field naturally gives rise to an enhanced probability of settling down at the electroweak vacuum at the end of inflation. Subsequent destabilization due to parametric resonance between the Higgs and the spectator field can be avoided in a wide parameter range. We further argue that the spectator field can play the role of dark matter.

Shapes and features of the primordial bispectrum

If time-dependent disruptions from slow-roll occur during inflation, the correlation functions of the primordial curvature perturbation should have scale-dependent features, a case which is marginally supported from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We offer a new approach to analyze the appearance of such features in the primordial bispectrum that yields new consistency relations and justifies the search of oscillating patterns modulated by orthogonal and local templates. Under the assumption of sharp features, we find that the cubic couplings of the curvature perturbation can be expressed in terms of the bispectrum in two specific momentum configurations, for example local and equilateral. This allows us to derive consistency relations among different bispectrum shapes, which in principle could be tested in future CMB surveys. Furthermore, based on the form of the consistency relations, we construct new two-parameter templates for features that include all the known shapes.

Small-scale structure and 21cm fluctuations by primordial black holes

We discuss early structure formation of small scales sourced by primordial black holes (PBHs) which constitute a small part of present cold dark matter component. We calculate the mass function and power spectrum of haloes originated from the Poisson fluctuations of PBH number and show that the number of small haloes is significantly modified in the presence of PBHs even if their fraction accounts for only $10^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$ of total dark matter abundance. We then compute the subsequent 21cm signature from those haloes. We find that PBHs can provide major contributions at high redshifts within the detectability of future experiments such as Square Kilometer Array, and provide a forecast constraint on the PBH fraction.

Consistency relation and inflaton field redefinition in the delta N formalism

We compute for general single-field inflation the intrinsic non-Gaussianity due to the self-interactions of the inflaton field in the squeezed limit. We recover the consistency relation in the context of the delta N formalism, and argue that there is a particular field redefinition that makes the intrinsic non-Gaussianity vanishing, thus improving the estimate of the local non-Gaussianity using the delta N formalism.
