Non-volatile integrated photonics on lithium tantalate-on-insulator

Scalable reconfigurable photonic integrated circuits require low-loss, high-speed optical control without continuous holding power. Yet widely used thermo-optic tuning and continuously biased electro-optic tuning consume static power and introduce thermal crosstalk or bias drift. Here we demonstrate a monolithic non-volatile photonics platform on lithium tantalate-on-insulator (LTOI). In congruent x-cut lithium tantalate, the switched ferroelectric-domain configuration is retained after the write field is removed. On the same LTOI platform, we demonstrate a waveguide propagation loss of approximately 0.05-0.06 dB/cm and multilevel non-volatile phase tuning in separate devices. The programmed states remain distinguishable through $10^{6}$ write cycles. Weighted segmented electrodes resolve 137 phase positions across a $π$ range, corresponding to an analogue phase-setting resolution of approximately $0.007π$. We further combine non-volatile phase control with high-speed electro-optic modulation to achieve zero-static-power bias control of a >110 GHz modulator and a 59.3 dB extinction ratio after non-volatile trimming. At the system level, an image-edge-detection chip achieves a measured energy efficiency of 3.48 TOPS/W. These results establish LTOI as an integrated photonics platform that combines persistent optical reconfigurability with low-loss routing and high-speed electro-optic modulation.

First Thin-Film Lithium Tantalate Polarization Controller Enabling Reset-Free Mrad/s Tracking for Optical Interconnects

The rapid escalation of computing power driven by large-scale artificial intelligence is placing unprecedented demands on the bandwidth, latency, and energy efficiency of data-center interconnects (DCIs). Self-homodyne coherent (SHC) transmission is a promising architecture because it preserves the spectral efficiency of coherent detection while greatly simplifying digital signal processing, but its practical deployment is critically limited by random and often ultrafast state-of-polarization (SOP) fluctuations that induce carrier fading and destabilize coherent reception. Here we report the first integrated polarization controller based on thin-film lithium tantalate (TFLT), enabling reset-free polarization tracking at Mrad/s speeds. The four-stage electro-optic device exhibits polarization-dependent loss (PDL) below 0.3 dB, a half-wave voltage below 2.5 V, high modulation bandwidth, and negligible DC drift. To accommodate the finite tuning range of integrated phase shifters, we develop a finite-boundary gradient-descent (FBGD) control algorithm that ensures reset-free SOP evolution with no phase jump. The implemented adaptive polarization controller (APC) is validated through both standalone polarization-tracking measurements and a dual-polarization 16-QAM SHC 400-Gbps transmission system. Transient polarization disturbances can be tracked at speeds up to 2 Mrad/s, while stable reset-free operation under continuous polarization disturbances is maintained up to 1 Mrad/s. This reset-free performance represents more than doubling the state of the art, while the pre-FEC bit-error rates remain below the HD-FEC threshold under realistic DCI conditions and lightning-scale polarization disturbances. These results establish TFLT as a new platform for ultrafast, low-power, reset-free, and drift-free polarization control in coherent optical interconnects and beyond.

Reconfigurable chiral edge states in synthetic dimensions on an integrated photonic chip

Chiral edge state is a hallmark of topological physics, which has drawn significant attention across quantum mechanics, condensed matter and optical systems. Recently, synthetic dimensions have emerged as ideal platforms for investigating chiral edge states in multiple dimensions, overcoming the limitations of real space. In this work, we demonstrate reconfigurable chiral edge states via synthetic dimensions on an integrated photonic chip. These states are realized by coupling two frequency lattices with opposite pseudospins, which are subjected to programmable artificial gauge potential and long-range coupling within a thin-film lithium niobate microring resonator. Within this system, we are able to implement versatile strategies to observe and steer the chiral edge states, including the realization and frustration of the chiral edge states in a synthetic Hall ladder, the generation of imbalanced chiral edge currents, and the regulation of chiral behaviors as chirality, single-pseudospin enhancement, and complete suppression. This work provides a reconfigurable integrated photonic platform for simulating and steering chiral edge states in synthetic space, paying the way for the realization of high-dimensional and programmable topological photonic systems on chip.

A Broadband Algorithm for Adiabatic Mode Evolution and its Application on Polarization Splitter-Rotator on LNOI Platform

Adiabatic mode evolution waveguides (AMEWs) are widely utilized in integrated photonics, including tapered waveguides, edge couplers, mode converters, splitters, etc. An analytical theory and a novel AMEW design algorithm are developed to create shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA). This new algorithm is effective in shortening the total length of the AMEW while maintaining the desired wavelength range. Moreover, this analytical algorithm requires much fewer computing resources than traditional numerical algorithms. With the new algorithm, we demonstrate a broadband and highly efficient polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) on a lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform with an LN thickness of 500 nm. According to our simulation, the length of the PSR is shortened by 3.5 times compared to the linear design. The fabricated PSR, with a total length of 2 mm, exhibits an insertion loss (IL) of 0.8 dB and a polarization extinction ratio (ER) of 12.2 dB over a wavelength range exceeding 76 nm.

Compact ultra-broadband light coupling on chip via nonadiabatic pumping

Enlarging bandwidth capacity of the integrated photonic systems demands efficient and broadband light coupling among optical elements, which has been a vital issue in integrated photonics. Here, we have developed a compact ultra-broadband light coupling strategy based on nonadiabatic pumping in coupled optical waveguides, and experimentally demonstrated the designs in thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform. We found that nonadiabatic transition would produce a decreased dispersion of the phases related to eigenstates in the waveguides. As a consequence, we realized high-efficiency directional transfer between edgestates for various wavelengths covering a 1-dB bandwidth of ~320 nm in experiment (>400 nm in simulation), with a coupling length (~50 μm) approximately 1/10 of that required in the adiabatic regime. Furthermore, we have constructed complex functional devices including beamsplitter and multiple-level cascaded networks for broadband light routing and splitting. Our work preserves significant advantages simultaneously in extending the operation bandwidth and minimizing the footprint, which demonstrates great potential for large-scale and compact photonic integration on chip.

High Performance Thin-film Lithium Niobate Modulator Applied ITO Composite Electrode with Modulation Efficiency of 1V*cm

Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) based electro-optic modulator is widely applied in the field of broadband optical communications due to its advantages such as large bandwidth, high extinction ratio, and low optical loss, bringing new possibilities for the next generation of high-performance electro-optic modulators. However, the modulation efficiency of TFLN modulators is still relatively low when compared with Silicon and Indium-Phosphide (InP) based competitors. Due to the restriction of the trade-off between half-wave voltage and modulation length, it is difficult to simultaneously obtain low driving voltage and large modulating bandwidth. Here, we break this limitation by introducing Transparent Conductive Oxide (TCO) film, resulting in an ultra-high modulation efficiency of 1.02 V*cm in O-Band. The fabricated composite electrode not only achieves high modulation efficiency but also maintains a high electro-optic bandwidth, as demonstrated by the 3 dB roll-off at 108 GHz and the transmission of PAM-4 signals at 224 Gbit/s. Our device presents new solutions for the next generation of low-cost high-performance electro-optic modulators. Additionally, it paves the way for downsizing TFLN-based multi-channel optical transmitter chips.

We successfully demonstrate a monolithic integrated dual-polarization (DP) IQ modulator based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform with a silicon substrate, which consists of IQ modulators, spot-size converters (SSCs) and a polarization rotator combiner (PRC). After coupled with polarization maintaining fibers, the measured insertion loss of the modulator is 12 dB. In addition, we experimentally achieve a single-carrier 1.6 Tb/s net bitrate transmission.

High-efficient and polarization independent edge coupler for thin-film lithium niobite waveguide devices

Lithium niobate (LN) devices have been widely used in optical communication and nonlinear optics due to its attractive optical properties. The emergence of thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) improves performances of LN-based devices greatly. However, a high-efficient fiber-chip optical coupler is still necessary for the LNOI-based devices for practical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a highly efficient and polarization-independent edge coupler based on LNOI. The coupler, fabricated by standard semiconductor process, shows a low fiber-chip coupling loss of 0.54 dB/0.59 dB per facet at 1550 nm for TE/TM light respectively, when coupled with ultra-high numerical aperture fiber (UHNAF) of which mode field diameter is about 3.2 micrometers. The coupling loss is lower than 1dB/facet for both TE and TM light at wavelengths longer than 1527nm. A relatively large tolerance for optical misalignment is also proved. The coupler shows a promising stability in high optical power and temperature variation.

Compact optical polarization-insensitive zoom metalens-doublet

Metasurface-based lenses (metalenses) offer specific conceptual advantages compared to ordinary refractive lenses. For example, it is possible to tune the focal length of a metalens doublet by varying the relative angle between the two metalenses while fixing their distance, leading to an extremely compact zoom lens. An improved polarization-insensitive design based on silicon-nanocylinders on silica substrates is presented. This design is realized and characterized experimentally at 1550 nm wavelength. By varying the relative angle between the metalenses in steps of 10 degrees, tuning of the doublet focal length is demonstrated from -54 mm to -+3 mm to +54 mm. This results in a zoom factor of an imaging system varying between 1 and 18. For positive focal lengths, the doublet focusing efficiency has a minimum of 34% and a maximum of 83%. Experiment and theory are in very good agreement.

Dynamic high efficiency 3D meta-holography in visible range with large frames number and high frame rate based on space division multiplexing design

Hologram is an ideal method for naked eye three-dimensional (3D) display, and computer-generated holography (CGH) makes it possible to reconstruct virtual objects. However, the large pixel size of common CGH devices results in shortages in the applications of hologram, such as narrow field of view, twin images, multi-diffraction orders, et al. Meanwhile, metasurfaces consisted of subwavelength structures show great potential in controlling of light which is suitable for hologram design. There are many inspired works to achieve dynamic meta-hologram as we summary in this paper. And it can be concluded that there is still not such a research work of meta-holography with high efficiency and good display quality in the visible range that can show smooth holographic videos with a large frames number and high frame rate. In current work, we demonstrate a new design of meta-holography in visible range based on space division multiplexing metasurface which can achieve 228 different holographic frames and a very high frame rate (maximum of frame rate, 9523 FPS). Also, the metasurface consists of silicon nitride (SiNx) nanopillars with high efficiency (more than 70%). This method can not only satisfy the needs of holographic display but also be suitable for many different research fields, such as laser fabrication, photolithography, 3D forming of two-photon polymerization and optics information processing, et al.

High efficiency resonant-metasurface germanium photodetector with ultra-thin intrinsic layer

Photodetectors at telecommunications-band with high efficiency and high speed are becoming increasingly important as the booming of big data, 5G, internet of things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and relevent applications. Silicon-based Germanium photodetectors exhibit great potential in reducing the cost and power dissipation, due to its compatibility of monolithic integration with signal-processing electronics. We report the first demonstration of normal incident resonant-metasurface germanium photodetector, to address the trade-off between quantum efficiency, bandwidth and wavelength coverage for free-space detectors. With an ultra-thin intrinsic layer thickness of 350 nm, a high external quantum efficiency of more than 60% and clearly open eyes at the speed of 20 Gbps are achieved, for a 30 μm-diameter device. The photodetector employs multiple trapped-mode resonances to enhance the localized electromagnetic field, which not only enhances the external quantum efficiency by more than 300% at 1550 nm, but also extends to the whole C band. Further simulation and measurement with small incident spot size show the feasibility to achieve >50 GHz 3 dB bandwidth by simply reducing the mesa size, with minor sacrifice of the enhanced absorption. This work paves the way for the future development of low-cost, high efficiency normal incident germanium photodetectors operating at data rates of 50 Gbps or higher.

Generalized Hartmann-Shack array of dielectric metalens sub-arrays for polarimetric beam profiling

To define and characterize optical systems, obtaining information on the amplitude, phase, and polarization profile of optical beams is of utmost importance. Polarimetry using bulk optics is well established to characterize the polarization state. Recently, metasurfaces and metalenses have successfully been introduced as compact optical components. Here, we take the metasurface concept to the system level by realizing arrays of metalens 2*3 sub-arrays, allowing to determine the polarization profile of an optical beam. We use silicon-based metalenses with a numerical aperture of 0.32 and a mean measured diffraction efficiency in transmission mode of 28% at 1550 nm wavelength. Together with a standard camera recording the array foci, our system is extremely compact and allows for real-time beam diagnostics by inspecting the foci amplitudes. By further analyzing the foci displacements in the spirit of a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor, we can simultaneously detect phase-gradient profiles. As application examples, we diagnose the polarization profiles of a radially polarized beam, an azimuthally polarized beam, and of a vortex beam.

Linear absorption coefficient of in-plane graphene on a silicon microring resonator

We demonstrate that linear absorption coefficient (LAC) of a graphene-silicon hybrid waveguide (GSHW) is determined by the optical transmission spectra of a graphene coated symmetrically coupled add-drop silicon microring resonator (SC-ADSMR), of which the value is around 0.23 dB/um. In contrast to the traditional cut-back method, the measured results are not dependent on the coupling efficiency of the fiber tip and the waveguide. Moreover, precision evaluation of graphene coated silicon microring resonator (SMR) is crucial for the optoelectronic devices targeting for compact footprint and low power consumption.
