Advancing Ubiquitous Wireless Connectivity through Channel Twinning

As an emerging trend in channel acquisition (CA), the concept of channel twinning (CT) has been proposed as a powerful enabler of ubiquitous connectivity in next-generation (xG) wireless systems. By fusing multimodal sensor data, CT advocates a high-fidelity and low-overhead CA paradigm, which is promising to provide accurate channel prediction in cross-domain and high-mobility scenarios of ubiquitous xG networks. However, existing literature lacks a universal CT architecture to address the challenges of heterogeneous scenarios, data, and resources in xG networks, which hinders the widespread deployment and applications of CT. This article discusses a new modularized CT architecture to bridge scene recognition, cooperative sensing, and decentralized training, comprising versatile model configuration, multimodal cooperative sensing, and lightweight twin modeling modules. Additionally, this article presents a detailed concept, technical features, and case studies of CT, outlines mainstream trends of realization methods, followed by potential applications of CT-empowered ubiquitous connectivity, and issues requiring future investigations.

Power Allocation for Coordinated Multi-Point Aided ISAC Systems

In this letter, we investigate a coordinated multiple point (CoMP)-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system that supports multiple users and targets. Multiple base stations (BSs) employ a coordinated power allocation strategy to serve their associated single-antenna communication users (CUs) while utilizing the echo signals for joint radar target (RT) detection. The probability of detection (PoD) of the CoMP-ISAC system is then proposed for assessing the sensing performance. To maximize the sum rate while ensuring the PoD for each RT and adhering to the total transmit power budget across all BSs, we introduce an efficient power allocation strategy. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the analytical findings, demonstrating that the proposed power allocation scheme effectively enhances the sum rate while satisfying the sensing requirements.

Age Optimal Sampling for Unreliable Channels under Unknown Channel Statistics

In this paper, we study a system in which a sensor forwards status updates to a receiver through an error-prone channel, while the receiver sends the transmission results back to the sensor via a reliable channel. Both channels are subject to random delays. To evaluate the timeliness of the status information at the receiver, we use the Age of Information (AoI) metric. The objective is to design a sampling policy that minimizes the expected time-average AoI, even when the channel statistics (e.g., delay distributions) are unknown. We first review the threshold structure of the optimal offline policy under known channel statistics and then reformulate the design of the online algorithm as a stochastic approximation problem. We propose a Robbins-Monro algorithm to solve this problem and demonstrate that the optimal threshold can be approximated almost surely. Moreover, we prove that the cumulative AoI regret of the online algorithm increases with rate $\mathcal{O}(\ln K)$, where $K$ is the number of successful transmissions. In addition, our algorithm is shown to be minimax order optimal, in the sense that for any online learning algorithm, the cumulative AoI regret up to the $K$-th successful transmissions grows with the rate at least $Ω(\ln K)$ in the worst case delay distribution. Finally, we improve the stability of the proposed online learning algorithm through a momentum-based stochastic gradient descent algorithm. Simulation results validate the performance of our proposed algorithm.

Secure Communication in Dynamic RDARS-Driven Systems

In this letter, we investigate a dynamic reconfigurable distributed antenna and reflection surface (RDARS)-driven secure communication system, where the working mode of the RDARS can be flexibly configured. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly designing the active beamforming vectors, reflection coefficients, and the channel-aware mode selection matrix. To address the non-convex binary and cardinality constraints introduced by dynamic mode selection, we propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) framework that employs penalty-based fractional programming (FP) and successive convex approximation (SCA) transformations. Simulation results demonstrate the potential of RDARS in enhancing the secrecy rate and show its superiority compared to existing reflection surface-based schemes.

Joint Beamforming Optimization and Mode Selection for RDARS-Aided MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective solution for green communications in 6G. However, its further extensive use has been greatly limited due to its fully passive characteristics. Considering the appealing distribution gains of distributed antenna systems (DAS), a flexible reconfigurable architecture called reconfigurable distributed antenna and reflecting surface (RDARS) is proposed. RDARS encompasses DAS and RIS as two special cases and maintains the advantages of distributed antennas while reducing the hardware cost by replacing some active antennas with low-cost passive reflecting surfaces. In this paper, we present a RDARS-aided uplink multi-user communication system and investigate the system transmission reliability with the newly proposed architecture. Specifically, in addition to the distribution gain and the reflection gain provided by the connection and reflection modes, respectively, we also consider the dynamic mode switching of each element which introduces an additional degree of freedom (DoF) and thus results in a selection gain. As such, we aim to minimize the total sum mean-square-error (MSE) of all data streams by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming matrix, the reflection phase shifts and the channel-aware placement of elements in the connection mode. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed architecture compared to the conventional fully passive RIS or DAS. Furthermore, some insights about the practical implementation of RDARS are provided.

Covering Underwater Shadow Zones using Acoustic Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

To better explore the oceans, seamless communication coverage of the vast 3D underwater space is desired. Unlike terrestrial networks using radio signals, underwater acoustic communications face a unique challenge: nodes in underwater shadow zones cannot connect to the network, even within the line of sight. These shadow zones can extend for tens of kilometers, causing communication nodes to disconnect. Existing efforts focus on passive avoidance of shadow zones, but this strategy cannot ensure seamless coverage in dynamic ocean environments. This paper addresses the shadow zone problem by utilizing acoustic Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) to actively control the underwater channel. Shadow zones are analytically modeled, and optimal RIS deployment strategies are developed for both deep-sea and shallow-sea environments. The acoustic RIS is redesigned considering practical engineering limitations and validated through pool tests. Bellhop-based simulations show that without RIS deployment, coverage is limited to less than 20%, regardless of source strength. However, with optimal RIS deployment, energy coverage can reach almost 100%.

Convergence of bi-spatial pullback random attractors and stochastic Liouville type equations for nonautonomous stochastic p-Laplacian lattice system

We consider convergence properties of the long-term behaviors with respect to the coefficient of the stochastic term for a nonautonomous stochastic $p$-Laplacian lattice equation with multiplicative noise. First, the upper semi-continuity of pullback random $(\ell^2,\ell^q)$-attractor is proved for each $q\in[1,+\infty)$. Then, a convergence result of the time-dependent invariant sample Borel probability measures is obtained in $\ell^2$. Next, we show that the invariant sample measures satisfy a stochastic Liouville type equation and a termwise convergence of the stochastic Liouville type equations is verified. Furthermore, each family of the invariant sample measures is turned out to be a sample statistical solution, which hence also fulfills a convergence consequence.

Robust Beamforming Design and Antenna Selection for Dynamic HRIS-aided MISO System

In this paper, we propose a dynamic hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (HRIS) to enhance multiple-input-single-output (MISO) communications, leveraging the property of dynamically placing active elements. Specifically, considering the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs), we investigate channel-aware configurations of the receive antennas at the base station (BS) and the active/passive elements at the HRIS to improve transmission reliability. To this end, we address the average mean-square-error (MSE) minimization problem for the HRIS-aided MISO system by jointly optimizing the BS receive antenna selection matrix, the reflection phase coefficients, the reflection amplitude matrix, and the mode selection matrix of the HRIS. To overcome the non-convexity and intractability of this problem, we first transform the binary and discrete variables into continuous ones, and then propose a penalty-based exact block coordinate descent (PEBCD) algorithm to alternately solve these subproblems. Numerical simulations demonstrate the significant superiority of our proposed scheme over conventional benchmark schemes.

Universal Modem Generation with Inherent Adaptability to Variant Underwater Acoustic Channels: a Data-Driven Perspective

In underwater acoustic (UWA) communication, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is commonly employed to mitigate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by delay spread. However, path-specific Doppler effects in UWA channels could result in significant inter-carrier interference (ICI) in the OFDM system. To address this problem, we introduce a multi-resolution convolutional neural network (CNN) named UWAModNet in this paper, designed to optimize the modem structure, specifically modulation and demodulation matrices. Based on a trade-off between the minimum and the average equivalent sub-channel rate, we propose an optimization criterion suitable to evaluate the performance of our learned modem. Additionally, a two-stage training strategy is developed to achieve quasi-optimal results. Simulations indicate that the learned modem outperforms zero-padded OFDM (ZP-OFDM) in terms of equivalent sub-channel rate and bit error rate, even under more severe Doppler effects during testing compared to training.

A Low-Overhead Incorporation-Extrapolation based Few-Shot CSI Feedback Framework for Massive MIMO Systems

Accurate channel state information (CSI) is essential for downlink precoding in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). However, obtaining CSI through feedback from the user equipment (UE) becomes challenging with the increasing scale of antennas and subcarriers and leads to extremely high CSI feedback overhead. Deep learning-based methods have emerged for compressing CSI but these methods generally require substantial collected samples and thus pose practical challenges. Moreover, existing deep learning methods also suffer from dramatically growing feedback overhead owing to their focus on full-dimensional CSI feedback. To address these issues, we propose a low-overhead Incorporation-Extrapolation based Few-Shot CSI feedback Framework (IEFSF) for massive MIMO systems. An incorporation-extrapolation scheme for eigenvector-based CSI feedback is proposed to reduce the feedback overhead. Then, to alleviate the necessity of extensive collected samples and enable few-shot CSI feedback, we further propose a knowledge-driven data augmentation (KDDA) method and an artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) -based data augmentation method by exploiting the domain knowledge of wireless channels and by exploiting a novel generative model, respectively. Experimental results based on the DeepMIMO dataset demonstrate that the proposed IEFSF significantly reduces CSI feedback overhead by 64 times compared with existing methods while maintaining higher feedback accuracy using only several hundred collected samples.

Invariant sample measures and sample statistical solutions for nonautonomous stochastic lattice Cahn-Hilliard equation with nonlinear noise

We consider a stochastic lattice Cahn-Hilliard equation with nonautonomous nonlinear noise. First, we prove the existence of pullback random attractors in $\ell^2$ for the generated nonautonomous random dynamical system. Then, we construct the time-dependent invariant sample Borel probability measures based on the pullback random attractor. Moreover, we develop a general stochastic Liouville type equation for nonautonomous random dynamical systems and show that the invariant sample measures obtained satisfy the stochastic Liouville type equation. At last, we define a new kind of statistical solution -- sample statistical solution corresponding to the invariant sample measures and show that each family of invariant sample measures is a sample statistical solution.

Modem Optimization of High-Mobility Scenarios: A Deep-Learning-Inspired Approach

The next generation wireless communication networks are required to support high-mobility scenarios, such as reliable data transmission for high-speed railways. Nevertheless, widely utilized multi-carrier modulation, the orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM), cannot deal with the severe Doppler spread brought by high mobility. To address this problem, some new modulation schemes, e.g. orthogonal time frequency space and affine frequency division multiplexing, have been proposed with different design criteria from OFDM, which promote reliability with the cost of extremely high implementation complexity. On the other hand, end-to-end systems achieve excellent gains by exploiting neural networks to replace traditional transmitters and receivers, but have to retrain and update continually with channel varying. In this paper, we propose the Modem Network (ModNet) to design a novel modem scheme. Compared with end-to-end systems, channels are directly fed into the network and we can directly get a modem scheme through ModNet. Then, the Tri-Phase training strategy is proposed, which mainly utilizes the siamese structure to unify the learned modem scheme without retraining frequently faced up with time-varying channels. Simulation results show the proposed modem scheme outperforms OFDM systems under different highmobility channel statistics.

Sparse Estimation for XL-MIMO with Unified LoS/NLoS Representation

Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) is promising as one of the key ingredients for the sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications. The electromagnetic propagation of spherical wavefronts introduces an additional distance-dependent dimension beyond conventional beamspace. In this paper, we first present one concise closed-form channel formulation for extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO). All line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths, far-field and near-field scenarios, and XL-MIMO and XL-MISO channels are unified under the framework, where additional Vandermonde windowing matrix is exclusively considered for LoS path. Under this framework, we further propose one low-complexity unified LoS/NLoS orthogonal matching pursuit (XL-UOMP) algorithm for XL-MIMO channel estimation. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm on both estimation accuracy and pilot consumption.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Reconfigurable Distributed Antenna and Reflecting Surface: Joint Beamforming and Mode Selection

This paper presents a new integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework, leveraging the recent advancements of reconfigurable distributed antenna and reflecting surface (RDARS). RDARS is a programmable surface structure comprising numerous elements, each of which can be flexibly configured to operate either in a reflection mode, resembling a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), or in a connected mode, functioning as a remote transmit or receive antenna. Our RDARS-aided ISAC framework effectively mitigates the adverse impact of multiplicative fading when compared to the passive RIS-aided ISAC, and reduces cost and energy consumption when compared to the active RIS-aided ISAC. Within our RDARS-aided ISAC framework, we consider a radar output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximization problem under communication constraints to jointly optimize the active transmit beamforming matrix of the base station (BS), the reflection and mode selection matrices of RDARS, and the receive filter. To tackle the inherent non-convexity and the binary integer optimization introduced by the mode selection in this optimization challenge, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm with proved convergence based on majorization minimization (MM) and penalty-based methods.Numerical and simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our new framework, and clearly verify substantial distribution, reflection as well as selection gains obtained by properly configuring the RDARS.

Enhancing Automatic Modulation Recognition through Robust Global Feature Extraction

Automatic Modulation Recognition (AMR) plays a crucial role in wireless communication systems. Deep learning AMR strategies have achieved tremendous success in recent years. Modulated signals exhibit long temporal dependencies, and extracting global features is crucial in identifying modulation schemes. Traditionally, human experts analyze patterns in constellation diagrams to classify modulation schemes. Classical convolutional-based networks, due to their limited receptive fields, excel at extracting local features but struggle to capture global relationships. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel hybrid deep framework named TLDNN, which incorporates the architectures of the transformer and long short-term memory (LSTM). We utilize the self-attention mechanism of the transformer to model the global correlations in signal sequences while employing LSTM to enhance the capture of temporal dependencies. To mitigate the impact like RF fingerprint features and channel characteristics on model generalization, we propose data augmentation strategies known as segment substitution (SS) to enhance the model's robustness to modulation-related features. Experimental results on widely-used datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and exhibits significant advantages in terms of complexity. Our proposed framework serves as a foundational backbone that can be extended to different datasets. We have verified the effectiveness of our augmentation approach in enhancing the generalization of the models, particularly in few-shot scenarios. RDARS Empowered Massive MIMO System: Two-Timescale Transceiver Design with Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we investigate a novel reconfigurable distributed antennas and reflecting surface (RDARS) aided multi-user massive MIMO system with imperfect CSI and propose a practical two-timescale (TTS) transceiver design to reduce the communication overhead and computational complexity of the system. In the RDARS-aided system, not only distribution gain but also reflection gain can be obtained by a flexible combination of the distributed antennas and reflecting surface, which differentiates the system from the others and also makes the TTS design challenging. To enable the optimal TTS transceiver design, the achievable rate of the system is first derived in closed-form. Then the TTS design aiming at the weighted sum rate maximization is considered. To solve the challenging non-convex optimization problem with high-order design variables, i.e., the transmit powers and the phase shifts at the RDARS, a block coordinate descent based method is proposed to find the optimal solutions in semi-closed forms iteratively. Specifically, two efficient algorithms are proposed with provable convergence for the optimal phase shift design, i.e., Riemannian Gradient Ascent based algorithm by exploiting the unit-modulus constraints, and Two-Tier Majorization-Minimization based algorithm with closed-form optimal solutions in each iteration. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate the superiority of deploying RDARS in massive MIMO systems to provide substantial rate improvement with a significantly reduced total number of active antennas/RF chains and lower transmit power when compared to the DAS and RIS-aided systems.

Age Optimum Sampling in Non-Stationary Environment

In this work, we consider a status update system with a sensor and a receiver. The status update information is sampled by the sensor and then forwarded to the receiver through a channel with non-stationary delay distribution. The data freshness at the receiver is quantified by the Age-of-Information (AoI). The goal is to design an online sampling strategy that can minimize the average AoI when the non-stationary delay distribution is unknown. Assuming that channel delay distribution may change over time, to minimize the average AoI, we propose a joint stochastic approximation and non-parametric change point detection algorithm that can: (1) learn the optimum update threshold when the delay distribution remains static; (2) detect the change in transmission delay distribution quickly and then restart the learning process. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can quickly detect the delay changes, and the average AoI obtained by the proposed policy converges to the minimum AoI.

Input-Output Relation and Low-Complexity Receiver Design for CP-OTFS Systems with Doppler Squint

In orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) systems, the impact of frequency-dependent Doppler which is referred to as the Doppler squint effect (DSE) is accumulated through longer duration, whose negligence has prevented OTFS systems from exploiting the performance superiority. In this paper, practical OFDM system using cyclic prefix time guard interval (CP-OFDM)-based OTFS systems with DSE are adopted. Cyclic prefix (CP) length is analyzed while the input-output relation considering DSE is derived. By deploying two prefix OFDM symbols, the channel estimation can be easily divided into three parts as delay detection, Doppler extraction and gain estimation. The linear equalization scheme is adopted taking the block diagonal property of the channel matrix into account, which completes the low-complexity receiver design. Simulation results confirm the significance of DSE and the considerable performance of the proposed low-complexity receiver scheme considering DSE.
