Reconfigurable Distributed Antennas and Reflecting Surface: A New Architecture for Wireless Communications

Distributed Antenna Systems (DASs) employ multiple antenna arrays in remote radio units to achieve highly directional transmission and provide great coverage performance for future-generation networks. However, the utilization of active antenna arrays results in a significant increase in hardware costs and power consumption for DAS. To address these issues, integrating DAS with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) offers a viable approach to ensure transmission performance while maintaining low hardware costs and power consumption. To incorporate the merits of RIS into the DAS from practical consideration, a novel architecture of ``Reconfigurable Distributed Antennas and Reflecting Surfaces (RDARS)'' is proposed in this paper. Specifically, based on the design of the additional direct-through state together with the existing high-quality fronthaul link, any element of the RDARS can be dynamically programmed to connect with the base station (BS) via fibers and perform the connected mode as remote distributed antennas of the BS to receive or transmit signals. Additionally, RDARS also inherits the low-cost and low-energy-consumption benefits of fully passive RISs by default configuring the elements as passive to perform the reflection mode. As a result, RDARS offers flexible control over the trade-off between distribution gain and reflection gain to enhance performance. The ergodic achievable rate under the RDARS architecture is analyzed and closed-form expression with meaningful insights is derived. The theoretical analysis and simulation results prove that the RDARS achieves a higher achievable rate than both DAS and RIS. A RDARS prototype with 256 elements is built for real experiments which shows that the RDARS-aided system can achieve an additional 21% and 170% throughput improvement over DAS and RIS-aided systems, respectively.

Sampling for Remote Estimation of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process through Channel with Unknown Delay Statistics

In this paper, we consider sampling an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process through a channel for remote estimation. The goal is to minimize the mean square error (MSE) at the estimator under a sampling frequency constraint when the channel delay statistics is unknown. Sampling for MSE minimization is reformulated into an optimal stopping problem. By revisiting the threshold structure of the optimal stopping policy when the delay statistics is known, we propose an online sampling algorithm to learn the optimum threshold using stochastic approximation algorithm and the virtual queue method. We prove that with probability 1, the MSE of the proposed online algorithm converges to the minimum MSE that is achieved when the channel delay statistics is known. The cumulative MSE gap of our proposed algorithm compared with the minimum MSE up to the $(k+1)$-th sample grows with rate at most $\mathcal{O}(\ln k)$. Our proposed online algorithm can satisfy the sampling frequency constraint theoretically. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Demo: Reconfigurable Distributed Antennas and Reflecting Surface (RDARS)-aided Integrated Sensing and Communication System

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system has been envisioned as a promising technology to be applied in future applications requiring both communication and high-accuracy sensing. Different from most research focusing on theoretical analysis and optimization in the area of ISAC, we implement a reconfigurable distributed antennas and reflecting surfaces (RDARS)-aided ISAC system prototype to achieve the dual-functionalities with the communication signal. A RDARS, composed of programmable elements capable of switching between reflection mode and connected mode, is introduced to assist in uplink signal transmission and sensing. The developed RDARS-aided ISAC prototype achieves reliable user localization without compromising the communication rate, showcasing its potential for future 6G systems.

Spatial-chirp Codebook-based Hierarchical Beam Training for Extremely Large-Scale Massive MIMO

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) promises to provide ultrahigh data rates in millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) spectrum. However, the spherical-wavefront wireless transmission caused by large aperture array presents huge challenges for channel state information (CSI) acquisition and beamforming. Two independent parameters (physical angles and transmission distance) should be simultaneously considered in XL-MIMO beamforming, which brings severe overhead consumption and beamforming degradation. To address this problem, we exploit the near-field channel characteristic and propose two low-overhead hierarchical beam training schemes for near-field XL-MIMO system. Firstly, we project near-field channel into spatial-angular domain and slope-intercept domain to capture detailed representations. Then we point out three critical criteria for XL-MIMO hierarchical beam training. Secondly, a novel spatial-chirp beam-aided codebook and corresponding hierarchical update policy are proposed. Thirdly, given the imperfect coverage and overlapping of spatial-chirp beams, we further design an enhanced hierarchical training codebook via manifold optimization and alternative minimization. Theoretical analyses and numerical simulations are also displayed to verify the superior performances on beamforming and training overhead.

Data Augmentation of Bridging the Delay Gap for DL-based Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under the frequency division duplexing (FDD) mode, the user equipment (UE) needs to feed channel state information (CSI) back to the base station (BS). Though deep learning approaches have made a hit in the CSI feedback problem, whether they can remain excellent in actual environments needs to be further investigated. In this letter, we point out that the real-time dataset in application often has the domain gap from the training dataset caused by the time delay. To bridge the gap, we propose bubble-shift (B-S) data augmentation, which attempts to offset performance degradation by changing the delay and remaining the channel information as much as possible. Moreover, random-generation (R-G) data augmentation is especially proposed for outdoor scenarios due to the complex distribution of its channels. It generalizes the characteristics of the channel matrix and alleviates the over-fitting problem. Simulation results show that the proposed data augmentation boosts the robustness of networks in both indoor and outdoor environments. RIS-Aided MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments: Robust Beamforming Design and Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been anticipated to be a novel cost-effective technology to improve the performance of future wireless systems. In this paper, we investigate a practical RIS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system in the presence of transceiver hardware impairments, RIS phase noise and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Joint design of the MIMO transceiver and RIS reflection matrix to minimize the total average mean-square-error (MSE) of all data streams is particularly considered. This joint design problem is non-convex and challenging to solve due to the newly considered practical imperfections. To tackle the issue, we first analyze the total average MSE by incorporating the impacts of the above system imperfections. Then, in order to handle the tightly coupled optimization variables and non-convex NP-hard constraints, an efficient iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO) framework is proposed with guaranteed convergence, where each subproblem admits a closed-form optimal solution by leveraging the majorization-minimization (MM) technique. Moreover, via exploiting the special structure of the unit-modulus constraints, we propose a modified Riemannian gradient ascent (RGA) algorithm for the discrete RIS phase shift optimization. Furthermore, the optimality of the proposed algorithm is validated under line-of-sight (LoS) channel conditions, and the irreducible MSE floor effect induced by imperfections of both hardware and CSI is also revealed in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Numerical results show the superior MSE performance of our proposed algorithm over the adopted benchmark schemes, and demonstrate that increasing the number of RIS elements is not always beneficial under the above system imperfections.

Global martingale and pathwise solutions and infinite regularity of invariant measures for a stochastic modified Swift-Hohenberg equation

We consider a 2D stochastic modified Swift-Hohenberg equations with multiplicative noise and periodic boundary. First, we establish the existence of local and global martingale and pathwise solutions in the regular Sobolev space $H^{2m}$ for each $m\geqslant1$. Associated with the unique global pathwise solution, we obtain a Markovian transition semigroup. Then, we show the existence of invariant measures and ergodic invariant measures for this Markovian semigroup on $H^{2m}$. At last, we improve the regularity of the obtained invariant measures to $H^{2(m+1)}$. With appropriate conditions on the diffusion coefficient, we can deduce the infinite regularity of the invariant measures, which was conjectured by Glatt-Holtz \textit{et al.} in their situation.

On the Capacity Region of Optical Intensity Broadcast Channels

This paper investigates the capacity region of the optical intensity broadcast channels (OI-BCs), where the input is subject to a peak-intensity constraint, an average-intensity constraint, or both. By leveraging the decomposition results of several random variables, i.e., uniform, exponential, and truncated exponential random variables, and adopting a superposition coding (SC) scheme, the inner bound on the capacity region is derived. Then, the outer bound is derived by applying the conditional entropy power inequality (EPI). In the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, the inner bound asymptotically matches the outer bound, thus characterizing the high-SNR asymptotic capacity region. The bounds are also extended to the general K-user BCs without loss of high-SNR asymptotic optimality.

Deep Learning for Hybrid Beamforming with Finite Feedback in GSM Aided mmWave MIMO Systems

Hybrid beamforming is widely recognized as an important technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) is further introduced to improve the spectrum efficiency. However, most of the existing works on beamforming assume the perfect channel state information (CSI), which is unrealistic in practical systems. In this paper, joint optimization of downlink pilot training, channel estimation, CSI feedback, and hybrid beamforming is considered in GSM aided frequency division duplexing (FDD) mmWave MIMO systems. With the help of deep learning, the GSM hybrid beamformers are designed via unsupervised learning in an end-to-end way. Experiments show that the proposed multi-resolution network named GsmEFBNet can reach a better achievable rate with fewer feedback bits compared with the conventional algorithm.

On the Doppler Squint Effect in OTFS Systems over Doubly-Dispersive Channels: Modeling and Evaluation

Extensive work has demonstrated the excellent performance of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation in high-mobility scenarios. Time-variant wideband channel estimation serves as one of the key compositions of OTFS receivers since the data detection requires accurate channel state information (CSI). In practical wideband OTFS systems, the Doppler shift brought by the high mobility is frequency-dependent, which is referred to as the Doppler Squint Effect (DSE). Unfortunately, DSE was ignored in overall prior estimation schemes employed in OTFS systems, which leads to severe performance loss in channel estimation and the consequent data detection. In this paper, we investigate DSE of wideband time-variant channel in delay-Doppler domain and concentrate on the characterization of OTFS channel coefficients considering DSE. The formulation and evaluation of OTFS input-output relationship are provided for both ideal and rectangular waveforms considering DSE. The channel estimation is therefore formulated as a sparse signal recovery problem and an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP)-based scheme is adopted to solve it. Simulation results confirm the significance of DSE and the performance superiority compared with traditional channel estimation approaches ignoring DSE.

Towards Efficient Subarray Hybrid Beamforming: Attention Network-based Practical Feedback in FDD Massive MU-MIMO Systems

Channel state information (CSI) feedback is necessary for the frequency division duplexing (FDD) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems due to the channel non-reciprocity. With the help of deep learning, many works have succeeded in rebuilding the compressed ideal CSI for massive MIMO. However, simple CSI reconstruction is of limited practicality since the channel estimation and the targeted beamforming design are not considered. In this paper, a jointly optimized network is introduced for channel estimation and feedback so that a spectral-efficient beamformer can be learned. Moreover, the deployment-friendly subarray hybrid beamforming architecture is applied and a practical lightweight end-to-end network is specially designed. Experiments show that the proposed network is over 10 times lighter at the resource-sensitive user equipment compared with the previous state-of-the-art method with only a minor performance loss.

Age Optimal Sampling Under Unknown Delay Statistics

This paper revisits the problem of sampling and transmitting status updates through a channel with random delay under a sampling frequency constraint \cite{sun_17_tit}. We use the Age of Information (AoI) to characterize the status information freshness at the receiver. The goal is to design a sampling policy that can minimize the average AoI when the statistics of delay is unknown. We reformulate the problem as the optimization of a renewal-reward process, and propose an online sampling strategy based on the Robbins-Monro algorithm. We prove that the proposed algorithm satisfies the sampling frequency constraint. Moreover, when the transmission delay is bounded and its distribution is absolutely continuous, the average AoI obtained by the proposed algorithm converges to the minimum AoI when the number of samples $K$ goes to infinity with probability 1. We show that the optimality gap decays with rate $\mathcal{O}\left(\ln K/K\right)$, and the proposed algorithm is minimax rate optimal. Simulation results validate the performance of our proposed algorithm.

Age of Information Optimization in Multi-Channel Network with Sided Information

We consider a discrete-time multi-channel network where the destination collects time-sensitive packets from multiple sources with sided channel information. The popular metric, Age of Information (AoI), is applied to measure the data freshness at the destination. Due to the interference constraint, only disjoint source-channel pairs can be chosen for transmission in each time slot, and the decision maker should choose the optimal scheduling pairs to minimize the average AoI at the destination. To learn the optimal channel selection, we apply the linear contextual bandit (LCB) framework by utilizing the sided information provided by pilots. Concretely, we establish the relationship between AoI regret and sub-optimal channel selection times and propose both age-independent and age-dependent algorithms. The former method is proven to achieve the sub-linear AoI regret but is outperformed by the latter algorithm both in the linear and non-linear contextual model in simulation.

Enhanced Tracking and Beamforming Codebook Design for Wideband Terahertz Massive MIMO System

True-time-delay (TTD) lines are recently applied inside Terahertz (THz) hybrid-precoding transceiver to acquire high beamforming gain against beam squint effect. However, beam tracking turns into a challenging puzzle where enormous potential beam directions bring about unacceptable overhead consumption. Frequency-scanning-based beam tracking is initially explored but still imperfect in previous studies. In this paper, based on TTD-aided hybrid precoding structure, we give an enhanced frequency-scanning-based tracking scheme. Multiple beams are generated and utilized simultaneously via several subcarriers for tracking at one timeslot. The squint beams' angular coverage at all subcarriers can be flexibly controlled by two different subcarrier-angular mapping policies, named forward-pairing and backward-pairing. Then multiple physical directions can be simultaneously searched in one timeslot for lower overhead consumption. Besides, closed-form searching radius bound, parameter configuration and interferences are theoretically analyzed. Furthermore, we provide the coupled codebook design for TTDs and phase shifters (PSs), with joint consideration of both beamforming and tracking. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the new frequency-scanning-based tracking scheme and beamforming codebook.

Quantization Adaptor for Bit-Level Deep Learning-Based Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the user equipment (UE) needs to feed the channel state information (CSI) back to the base station (BS) for the following beamforming. But the large scale of antennas in massive MIMO systems causes huge feedback overhead. Deep learning (DL) based methods can compress the CSI at the UE and recover it at the BS, which reduces the feedback cost significantly. But the compressed CSI must be quantized into bit streams for transmission. In this paper, we propose an adaptor-assisted quantization strategy for bit-level DL-based CSI feedback. First, we design a network-aided adaptor and an advanced training scheme to adaptively improve the quantization and reconstruction accuracy. Moreover, for easy practical employment, we introduce the expert knowledge of data distribution and propose a pluggable and cost-free adaptor scheme. Experiments show that compared with the state-of-the-art feedback quantization method, this adaptor-aided quantization strategy can achieve better quantization accuracy and reconstruction performance with less or no additional cost. Better Lightweight Network for Free: Codeword Mimic Learning for Massive MIMO CSI feedback

The channel state information (CSI) needs to be fed back from the user equipment (UE) to the base station (BS) in frequency division duplexing (FDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Recently, neural networks are widely applied to CSI compressed feedback since the original overhead is too large for the massive MIMO system. Notably, lightweight feedback networks attract special attention due to their practicality of deployment. However, the feedback accuracy is likely to be harmed by the network compression. In this paper, a cost free distillation technique named codeword mimic (CM) is proposed to train better feedback networks with the practical lightweight encoder. A mimic-explore training strategy with a special distillation scheduler is designed to enhance the CM learning. Experiments show that the proposed CM learning outperforms the previous state-of-the-art feedback distillation method, boosting the performance of the lightweight feedback network without any extra inference cost.

Sending Timely Status Updates through Channel with Random Delay via Online Learning

In this work, we study a status update system with a source node sending timely information to the destination through a channel with random delay. We measure the timeliness of the information stored at the receiver via the Age of Information (AoI), the time elapsed since the freshest sample stored at the receiver is generated. The goal is to design a sampling strategy that minimizes the total cost of the expected time average AoI and sampling cost in the absence of transmission delay statistics. We reformulate the total cost minimization problem as the optimization of a renewal-reward process, and propose an online sampling strategy based on the Robbins-Monro algorithm. Denote $K$ to be the number of samples we have taken. We show that, when the transmission delay is bounded, the expected time average total cost obtained by the proposed online algorithm converges to the minimum cost when $K$ goes to infinity, and the optimality gap decays with rate $\mathcal{O}\left(\ln K/K\right)$. Simulation results validate the performance of our proposed algorithm.
