Towards A Holographic Model of D-Wave Superconductors

The holographic model for S-wave high T_c superconductors developed by Hartnoll, Herzog and Horowitz is generalized to describe D-wave superconductors. The 3+1 dimensional gravitational theory consists a symmetric, traceless second-rank tensor field and a U(1) gauge field in the background of the AdS black hole. Below T_c the tensor field which carries the U(1) charge undergoes the Higgs mechanism and breaks the U(1) symmetry of the boundary theory spontaneously. The phase transition characterized by the D-wave condensate is second order with the mean field critical exponent beta = 1/2. As expected, the AC conductivity is isotropic below T_c and the system becomes superconducting in the DC limit but has no hard gap.

Space- and time-like electromagnetic pion form factors in light-cone pQCD

We present a combined analysis of the space- and time-like electromagnetic pion form factors in light-cone perturbative QCD with transverse momentum dependence and Sudakov suppression. Including the non-perturbative ``soft' QCD and power suppressed twist-3 corrections to the standard twist-2 perturbative QCD result, the experimental pion data available at moderate energies/momentum transfers can be explained reasonably well. This may help towards resolving the bulk of the existing discrepancy between the space- and time-like experimental data.

Model analysis on thermal UV-cutoff effects on the critical boundary in hot QCD

We study the critical boundary on the quark-mass plane associated with the chiral phase transition in QCD at finite temperature. We point out that the critical boundaries obtained from the Lattice QCD simulation and the chiral effective model are significantly different; in the (Polyakov-loop coupled) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model we find that the critical mass is about one order of magnitude smaller than the value reported in the Lattice QCD case. It is known in the Lattice QCD study that the critical mass goes smaller in the continuum limit along the temporal direction. To investigate the temporal UV-cutoff effects quantitatively we consider the (P)NJL model with only finite $N_τ$ Matsubara frequencies taken in the summation. We confirm that the critical mass in such a UV-tamed NJL model becomes larger with decreasing $N_τ$, which demonstrates a correct tendency to explain the difference between the Lattice QCD and chiral model results.

Shear Viscosity of a Gluon Plasma in Perturbative QCD

We calculate the shear viscosity $η$ to entropy density $s$ ratio $η/s$ of a gluon plasma in kinetic theory including the gg->gg and gg<->ggg processes. Due to the suppressed contribution to $η$ in the gg->gg forward scattering, it is known that the gluon bremsstrahlung gg<->ggg process also contributes at the same order $O(α_{s}^{-2})$ in perturbative QCD. Using the Gunion-Bertsch formula for the gg<->ggg matrix element which is valid for the limit of soft bremsstrahlung, we find that the result is sensitive to whether the same limit is taken for the phase space. Using the exact phase space, the gg<->ggg contribution becomes more important to $η$ than gg->gg for $α_{s}\gtrsim 2\times 10^{-3}$. Therefore, at $α_{s}=0.1$, $η/s\simeq 1.0$, between 2.7 obtained by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe (AMY) and 0.5 obtained by Xu and Greiner. If the soft bremsstrahlung limit is imposed on the phase space such that the recoil effect from the bremsstrahlung gluon is neglected, then the correction from the gg<->ggg process is about 10-30% of the total which is close to AMY's prediction. This shows that the soft bremsstrahlung approximation is not as good as previously expected.

Peak-Dip-Hump from Holographic Superconductivity

We study the fermionic spectral function in a holographic superconductor model. At zero temperature, the black hole has zero horizon and hence the entropy of the system is zero after the back reaction of the condensate is taken into account. We find the system exhibits the famous peak-dip-hump lineshape with a sharp low-energy peak followed by a dip then a hump at higher energies. This feature is widely observed in the spectrum of several high-T_c superconductors. We also find a linear relation between the gap in the fermionic spectrum and the condensate, indicating the condensate is formed by fermion pairing.

U_A(1) Anomaly in Hot and Dense QCD and the Critical Surface

We discuss the chiral phase transition in hot and dense QCD with three light flavors. Inspired by the well known fact that the U_A(1) anomaly could induce first order phase transitions, we study the effect of the possible restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry at finite density. In particular, we explore the link between the U_A(1) restoration and the recent lattice QCD results of de Forcrand and Philipsen, in which the first order phase transition region near zero chemical potential (mu) shrinks in the quark mass and mu space when mu is increased. Starting from the Ginzburg-Landau theory for general discussions, we then use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for quantitative studies. With the partial U_A(1) restoration modeled by the density dependent 't Hooft interaction, we fit the shrinking of the critical surface found in de Forcrand and Philipsen's lattice calculation at low mu. At higher mu, the critical surface might shrink or expand, depending on the scenarios. This raises the possibility that despite the shrinking of the critical surface at lower mu, the QCD critical end point might still exist due to the expansion at higher mu. In this case, very high precision lattice data will be needed to detect the back-bending of the critical surface with the currently available analytic continuation or Taylor expansion approaches. Lattice computations could, however, test whether the U_A(1) restoration is responsible for the shrinking of the critical surface by computing eta' mass or the topological susceptibility at small mu.

Universality of Mixed Action Extrapolation Formulae

Mixed action theories with chirally symmetric valence fermions exhibit very desirable features both at the level of the lattice calculations as well as in the construction and implementation of the low energy mixed action effective field theory. In this work we show that when such a mixed action effective field theory is projected onto the valence sector, both the Lagrangian and the extrapolation formulae become universal in form through next to leading order, for all variants of discretization methods used for the sea fermions. Our conclusion relies on the chiral nature of the valence quarks. The result implies that for all sea quark methods which are in the same universality class as QCD, the numerical values of the physical coefficients in the various mixed action chiral Lagrangians will be the same up to lattice spacing dependent corrections. This allows us to construct a prescription to determine the mixed action extrapolation formulae for a large class of hadronic correlation functions computed in partially quenched chiral perturbation theory at the one-loop level. For specific examples, we apply this prescription to the nucleon twist--2 matrix elements and the nucleon--nucleon system. In addition, we determine the mixed action extrapolation formula for the neutron EDM as this provides a nice example of a theta-dependent observable; these observables are exceptions to our prescription.

pi-pi Scattering in Twisted Mass Chiral Perturbation Theory

In this report we describe both I=2 and I=0 pi-pi scattering for twisted mass lattice QCD utilizing twisted mass chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. Focusing on the lattice spacing (b) corrections, we demonstrate that in the exotic I=2, I_3=+-2 channels, the leading scaling violations of pi-pi scattering at maximal twist begin at O(m_pi^2 b^2). This is not the case in any other isospin channel, for which the scaling violations at maximal twist begin at O(b^2). Furthermore, we demonstrate the existence of a mixing between the I=2, I_3 = 0 and I=0 scattering channels due to the breaking of isospin symmetry by the twisted mass term. The mixing term, although formally next-to-leading order, is relatively large, thus necessitating the use of a coupled channel analysis. We argue that this mixing likely renders the computation of the I=0 channel impractical with twisted mass lattice QCD.

Bulk Viscosity of a Gas of Massless Pions

In the hadronic phase, the dominant configuration of QCD with two flavors of massless quarks is a gas of massless pions. We calculate the bulk viscosity (zeta) using the Boltzmann equation with the kinetic theory generalized to incorporate the trace anomaly. We find that the dimensionless ratio zeta/s, s being the entropy density, is monotonic increasing below T=120 MeV, where chiral perturbation theory is applicable. This, combined with previous results, shows that zeta/s reaches its maximum near the phase transition temperature Tc, while eta/s, eta being the shear viscosity, reaches its minimum near Tc in QCD with massless quarks.

Phase Transitions and the Perfectness of Fluids

We calculate the ratio eta/s, the shear viscosity (eta) to entropy density (s), which characterizes how perfect a fluid is, in weakly coupled real scalar field theories with different types of phase transitions. The mean-field results of the eta/s behaviors agree with the empirical observations in atomic and molecular systems such as water, He, N, and all the matters with data available in the NIST database. These behaviors are expected to be the same in N component scalar theories with an O(N) symmetry. We speculate these eta/s behaviors are general properties of fluid shared by QCD and cold atoms. Finally, we clarify some issues regarding counterexamples of the conjectured universal eta/s bound found in Refs.[16,17].

Shear Viscosity of a Non-Relativistic Conformal Gas in Two Dimensions

The shear viscosity, eta, of a fermi gas with non-relativistic conformal symmetry in two spatial dimensions is investigated. We find that eta/s, s being the entropy density, diverges as a gas of free particles in this system. It is in contrast to the eta/s=1/(4 pi) found using non-relativistic AdS/CFT correspondence, which requires a strongly interacting CFT. It implies the unitary fermi gas in two spatial dimensions is not likely to have a weakly interacting gravity dual.

QCD Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in the Hadronic Phase

Shear viscosity (eta) of QCD in the hadronic phase is computed by the coupled Boltzmann equations of pions and nucleons in low temperatures and low baryon number densities. The eta to entropy density ratio eta/s maps out the nuclear gas-liquid phase transition by forming a valley tracing the phase transition line in the temperature-chemical potential plane. When the phase transition turns into a crossover, the eta/s valley gradually disappears. We suspect the general feature for a first-order phase transition is that eta/s has a discontinuity in the bottom of the eta/s valley. The discontinuity coincides with the phase transition line and ends at the critical point. Beyond the critical point, a smooth eta/s valley is seen. However, the valley could disappear further away from the critical point. The eta/s measurements might provide an alternative to identify the critical points.

Two Meson Systems with Ginsparg-Wilson Valence Quarks

Unphysical effects associated with finite lattice spacing and partial quenching may lead to the presence of unphysical terms in chiral extrapolation formulae. These unphysical terms must then be removed during data analysis before physical predictions can be made. In this work, we show that through next-to-leading order, there are no unphysical counterterms in the extrapolation formulae, expressed in lattice-physical parameters, for meson scattering lengths in theories with Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks. Our work applies to most sea quark discretization, provided that chiral perturbation theory is a valid approximation. We demonstrate our results with explicit computations and show that, in favorable circumstances, the extrapolation formulae do not depend on the unknown constant C_Mix appearing at lowest order in the mixed action chiral Lagrangian. We show that the I=1 KK scattering length does not depend on C_Mix in contrast to the I=3/2 K-pi scattering length. In addition, we show that these observables combined with f_K / f_pi and the I=2 pi-pi scattering length share only two linearly independent sets of counterterms, providing a means to test the mixed action theory at one lattice spacing. We therefore make a prediction for the I=1 KK scattering length.

Generalised parton distributions of the pion in partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory

We consider the pion matrix elements of the isoscalar and isovector combinations of the vector and tensor twist-two operators that determine the moments of the various pion generalised parton distributions. Our analysis is performed using partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the SU(2) and SU(4|2) theories and present our results at infinite volume and also at finite volume where some subtleties arise. These results are useful for extrapolations of lattice calculations of these matrix elements at small momentum transfer to the physical regime.

Leading Chiral Corrections to the Nucleon Generalized Parton Distributions

Using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory we study the leading chiral corrections to the complete set of nucleon generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We compute the leading quark mass and momentum transfer dependence of the moments of nucleon GPDs through the nucleon off-forward twist-2 matrix elements. These results are then applied to get insight on the GPDs and their impact parameter space distributions.

BEC-BCS Crossover in the Epsilon Expansion

The epsilon expansion (expansion around four spacial dimensions) developed by Nishida and Son for a cold fermi gas with infinite scattering length is extended to finite scattering length to study the BEC-BCS crossover. A resummation of higher order logarithms and a suitable extension of fermion coupling in d-dimensions are developed in order to apply the theory in the BCS regime. The ratio between the chemical potential and the Fermi energy, mu/eF, is computed to next-to-leading order in the epsilon expansion as a function of eta=1/(a kF), where a is the scattering length and kF is the Fermi momentum in a non-interacting system. Near the unitarity limit eta->0, we found mu/eF=0.475-0.707 eta-0.5 eta^2. Near the BEC limit eta->infinity, mu/eF=0.062/eta - eta^2, while near the BCS limit eta->-infinity, mu/eF=1+0.707/eta. Overall good agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo results is found.

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio of QCD below the Deconfinement Temperature

Using chiral perturbation theory we investigate the QCD shear viscosity to entropy density ratio below the deconfinement temperature (~170 MeV) with zero baryon number density. It is found that the viscosity to entropy density ratio of QCD is monotonically decreasing in temperature (T) and reaches 0.6 with estimated ~50% uncertainty at T=120 MeV. A naive extrapolation of the leading order result shows that the ratio reaches the 1/(4 pi) minimum bound proposed by Kovtun, Son, and Starinets using string theory methods at T~200 MeV. This suggests a phase transition or cross over might occur at T less than 200 MeV in order for the bound to remain valid. Also, it is natural for the ratio to stay close to the minimum bound around the phase transition temperature as was recently found in heavy ion collisions.
