Ginsparg-Wilson Pions Scattering in a Sea of Staggered Quarks

We calculate isospin 2 pion-pion scattering in chiral perturbation theory for a partially quenched, mixed action theory with Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks and staggered sea quarks. We point out that for some scattering channels, the power-law volume dependence of two pion states in nonunitary theories such as partially quenched or mixed action QCD is identical to that of QCD. Thus one can extract infinite volume scattering parameters from mixed action simulations. We then determine the scattering length for both 2 and 2+1 sea quarks in the isospin limit. The scattering length, when expressed in terms of the pion mass and the decay constant measured on the lattice, has no contributions from mixed valence-sea mesons, thus it does not depend upon the parameter, C_Mix, that appears in the chiral Lagrangian of the mixed theory. In addition, the contributions which nominally arise from operators appearing in the mixed action O(a^2 m_q) Lagrangian exactly cancel when the scattering length is written in this form. This is in contrast to the scattering length expressed in terms of the bare parameters of the chiral Lagrangian, which explicitly exhibits all the sicknesses and lattice spacing dependence allowed by a partially quenched mixed action theory. These results hold for both 2 and 2+1 flavors of sea quarks.

Model-Independent Results for SU(3) Violation in Twist-3 Light-Cone Distribution Functions

Using chiral symmetry we investigate the leading SU(3) violation in the complete set of quark twist-3 light-cone distribution functions of the pion, kaon, and eta. It is shown that terms non-analytic in the quark masses do not affect the shape, and only appear in the normalization constants. Predictive power is retained including the leading analytic m_{q} operators. With the symmetry violating corrections we derive useful model-independent relations between the distributions of pion, kaon and eta. We also comment on the calculations of the moments of these distributions using lattice QCD and light-cone sum rules.

Fixing Two-Nucleon Weak-Axial Coupling L_{1,A} From mu-d Capture

We calculate the muon capture rate on the deuteron to next-to-next-to-leading order in the pionless effective field theory. The result can be used to constrain the two-nucleon isovector axial coupling L_{1,A} to +/- 2 fm^3 if the muon capture rate is measured to 2% level. From this, one can determine the neutrino-deuteron break up reactions and the pp-fusion cross section in the sun to a same level of accuracy.

Universality of the EMC Effect

Using effective field theory, we investigate nuclear modification of nucleon parton distributions (for example, the EMC effect). We show that the universality of the shape distortion in nuclear parton distributions (the factorisation of the Bjorken x and atomic number (A) dependence) is model independent and emerges naturally in effective field theory. We then extend our analysis to study the analogous nuclear modifications in isospin and spin dependent parton distributions and generalised parton distributions.

Twisted valence quarks and hadron interactions on the lattice

We consider QCD with valence and sea quarks obeying different boundary conditions. We point out that the energy of low lying two hadron states do not depend on the boundary condition of the sea quarks (up to exponentially small corrections). Thus, the advantages in using twisted boundary conditions on the lattice QCD extraction of nucleon-nucleon phase shifts can be gained without the need of new gauge configurations, even in fully unquenched calculations.

Deuteron Compton Scattering in Effective Field Theory: Spin-Dependent Cross Sections and Asymmetries

Polarized Compton scattering on the deuteron is studied in nuclear effective field theory. A set of tensor structures is introduced to define 12 independent Compton amplitudes. The scalar and vector amplitudes are calculated up to ${\cal O}((Q/Λ)^2)$ in low-energy power counting. Significant contribution to the vector amplitudes is found to come from the spin-orbit type of relativistic corrections. A double-helicity dependent cross section $Δ_1 σ= (σ_{+1-1}-σ_{+1+1})/2$ is calculated to the same order, and the effect of the nucleon isoscalar spin-dependent polarizabilities is found to be smaller than the effect of isoscalar spin-independent ones. Contributions of spin-independent polarizabilities are investigated in various asymmetries, one of which has as large as 12 (26) percent effect at the center-of-mass photon energy 30 (50) MeV.

Inequalities for Light Nuclei in the Wigner Symmetry Limit

Using effective field theory we derive inequalities for light nuclei in the Wigner symmetry limit. This is the limit where isospin and spin degrees of freedom can be interchanged. We prove that the energy of any three-nucleon state is bounded below by the average energy of the lowest two-nucleon and four-nucleon states. We show how this is modified by lowest-order terms breaking Wigner symmetry and prove general energy convexity results for SU(N). We also discuss the inclusion of Wigner-symmetric three and four-nucleon force terms.

Deuteron Compton Scattering in Effective Field Theory And Spin-Independent Nucleon Polarizabilities

Deuteron Compton scattering is calculated to $\mathcal{O}(Q^2)$ in pionless effective field theory using a dibaryon approach. The vector amplitude, which was not included in the previous pionless calculations, contributes to the cross section at $\mathcal{O}(Q^2)$ and influences significantly the extracted values of nucleon electric polarizability at incident photon energy 49 MeV. We recommend future high precision deuteron compton scattering experiments being performed at 25-35 MeV photon energy where the nucleon polarizability effects are appreciable and the pionless effective field theory is most reliable. For example, a measurement at 30 MeV with a 3% error will constrain the isoscalar nucleon electric polarizability $% α_{0}$ with a $\sim 30%$ error.

Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov Sum-Rule for the Deuteron in Nuclear Effective Field Theory

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule for the deuteron is studied in nuclear effective field theory. The low-energy theorem for the spin-dependent Compton amplitude $f_1(ω)$ is derived to the next-to-leading order in low-energy expansion. The spin-dependent photodisintegration cross section $σ^P-σ^A$ is calculated to the same order, and its contribution to the dispersive integral is evaluated.

A lattice theory for low energy fermions at finite chemical potential

We construct a lattice theory describing a system of interacting nonrelativistic spin s=1/2 fermions at nonzero chemical potential. The theory is applicable whenever the interparticle separation is large compared to the range of the two-body potential, and does not suffer from a sign problem. In particular, the theory could be useful in studying the thermodynamic limit of fermion systems for which the scattering length is much larger than the interparticle spacing, with applications to realistic atomic systems and dilute neutron gases.

Model Independent Results for SU(3) Violation in Light-Cone Distribution Functions

Using chiral symmetry we investigate the leading SU(3) violation in light-cone distribution functions phi_M(x) of the pion, kaon, and eta. It is shown that terms non-analytic in the quark masses do not affect the shape, and only appear in the decay constants. Predictive power is retained including the leading analytic m_q operators. With the symmetry violating corrections we derive useful model independent relations between phi_pi, phi_eta, and phi_K. Using the soft-collinear effective theory we discuss how factorization generates the subleading chiral coefficients.

Soft Pion Emission in DVCS

We examine soft-pion emission in deeply virtual Compton scattering. Contrary to previous claims, we find that the amplitude for soft-pion emission is not directly related to the generalized parton distributions in the nucleon.

Constraining the Leading Weak Axial Two-body Current by SNO and Super-K

We analyze the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and Super-Kamiokande (SK) data on charged current (CC), neutral current (NC) and neutrino electron elastic scattering (ES) reactions to constrain the leading weak axial two-body current parameterized by L_1A. This two-body current is the dominant uncertainty of every low energy weak interaction deuteron breakup process, including SNO's CC and NC reactions. Our method shows that the theoretical inputs to SNO's determination of the CC and NC fluxes can be self-calibrated, be calibrated by SK, or be calibrated by reactor data. The only assumption made is that the total flux of active neutrinos has the standard ^8B spectral shape (but distortions in the electron neutrino spectrum are allowed). We show that SNO's conclusion about the inconsistency of the no-flavor-conversion hypothesis does not contain significant theoretical uncertainty, and we determine the magnitude of the active solar neutrino flux.

Constraints on Two-Body Axial Currents from Reactor Antineutrino-Deuteron Breakup Reactions

We discuss how to reduce theoretical uncertainties in the neutrino-deuteron breakup cross-sections crucial to the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory's efforts to measure the solar neutrino flux. In effective field theory, the dominant uncertainties in all neutrino-deuteron reactions can be expressed through a single, common, isovector axial two-body current parameterized by $L_{1,A}$. After briefly reviewing the status of fixing $L_{1,A}$ experimentally, we present a constraint on $L_{1,A}$ imposed by existing reactor antineutrino-deuteron breakup data. This constraint alone leads to an uncertainty of 6-7% at 7 MeV neutrino energy in the cross-sections relevant to the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. However, more significantly for the Sudbury experiment, the constraint implies an uncertainty of only 0.7% in the ratio of charged to neutral current cross-sections used to verify the existence of neutrino oscillations, at the same energy. This is the only direct experimental constraint from the two-body system, to date, of the uncertainty in these cross-sections.

The Chiral Extrapolation of Strange Matrix Elements in the Nucleon

In current lattice simulations of nucleon properties, the up and down quark masses are significantly larger than their physical values, while the strange quark can be included in simulations with its physical mass. When the up and down quark masses are much smaller than the strange-quark mass the chiral extrapolation of strange-quark matrix elements in the nucleon from the lattice up and down quark masses to their physical values can be performed with two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, thereby avoiding the slow convergence problem of the three-flavor chiral expansion. We explore the chiral expansion of several matrix elements of strange operators in the nucleon in two-flavor chiral perturbation theory and two-flavor partial-quenched chiral perturbation theory.

Matrix Elements of Twist-2 Operators in Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory

We compute the leading non-analytic quark mass dependence of the matrix elements of isovector twist-2 operators between octet baryon states in quenched QCD using quenched chiral perturbation theory. There are contributions of the form m_q log m_q, in analogy with QCD, but there are also contributions of the form log m_q from hairpin interactions. The nucleon does not receive such hairpin contributions.

Connecting the Quenched and Unquenched Worlds via the Large N_c World

In the large N_c(number of colors) limit, quenched QCD and QCD are identical. This implies that, in the effective field theory framework, some of the low energy constants in (N_c=3) quenched QCD and QCD are the same up to higher-order corrections in the 1/N_c expansion. Thus the calculation of the nonleptonic kaon decays relevant for the Delta I=1/2 rule in the quenched approximation is expected to differ from the unquenched one by an O(1/N_c) correction. However, the calculation relevant to the CP-violation parameter epsilon'/epsilon would have a relatively big higher-order correction due to the large cancellation in the leading order. Some important weak matrix elements are poorly known that even constraints with 100% errors are interesting. In those cases, quenched calculations will be very useful.

Leading Chiral Contributions to the Spin Structure of the Proton

The leading chiral contributions to the quark and gluon components of the proton spin are calculated using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Similar calculations are done for the moments of the generalized parton distributions relevant to the quark and gluon angular momentum densities. These results provide useful insight about the role of pions in the spin structure of the nucleon, and can serve as a guidance for extrapolating lattice QCD calculations at large quark masses to the chiral limit.
