The Mullins-Sekerka problem via the method of potentials

It is shown that the two-dimensional Mullins-Sekerka problem is well-posed in all subcritical Sobolev spaces $H^r(\mathbb{R})$ with $r\in(3/2,2).$ This is the first result where this issue is established in an unbounded geometry. The novelty of our approach is the use of potential theory to formulate the model as an evolution problem with nonlinearities expressed by singular integral operators.

Stratified periodic water waves with singular density gradients

We consider Euler's equations for free surface waves traveling on a body of density stratified water in the scenario when gravity and surface tension act as restoring forces. The flow is continuously stratified, and the water layer is bounded from below by an impermeable horizontal bed. For this problem we establish three equivalent classical formulations in a suitable setting of strong solutions which may describe nevertheless waves with singular density gradients. Based upon this equivalence we then construct two-dimensional symmetric periodic traveling waves that are monotone between each crest and trough. Our analysis uses, to a large extent, the availability of a weak formulation of the water wave problem, the regularity properties of the corresponding weak solutions, and methods from nonlinear functional analysis.

Well-posedness of the EPDiff equation with a pseudo-differential inertia operator

In this article we study the class of right-invariant, fractional order Sobolev-type metrics on groups of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold M. Our main result concerns well-posedness properties for the corresponding Euler-Arnold equations, also called the EPDiff equations, which are of importance in mathematical physics and in the field of shape analysis and template registration. Depending on the order of the metric, we will prove both local and global well-posedness results for these equations. As a result of our analysis we will also obtain new commutator estimates for elliptic pseudo-differential operators.

The domain of parabolicity for the Muskat problem

We address the well-posedness of the Muskat problem in a periodic geometry and in a setting which allows us to consider general initial and boundary data, gravity effects, as well as surface tension effects. In the absence of surface tension we prove that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies a domain of parabolicity for the Muskat problem. This property is used to establish the well-posedness of the problem. In the presence of surface tension effects the Muskat problem is of parabolic type for general initial and boundary data. As a bi-product of our analysis we obtain that Dirichlet-Neumann type operators associated with certain diffraction problems are negative generators of strongly continuous and analytic semigroups in the scale of small Hölder spaces.

Local and Global Well-posedness of the fractional order EPDiff equation on $\mathbb{R}^{d}$

Of concern is the study of fractional order Sobolev--type metrics on the group of $H^{\infty}$-diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and on its Sobolev completions $\mathcal{D}^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. It is shown that the $H^{s}$-Sobolev metric induces a strong and smooth Riemannian metric on the Banach manifolds $\mathcal{D}^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ for $s >1 + \frac{d}{2}$. As a consequence a global well-posedness result of the corresponding geodesic equations, both on the Banach manifold $\mathcal{D}^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and on the smooth regular Fréchet-Lie group of all $H^{\infty}$-diffeomorphisms is obtained. In addition a local existence result for the geodesic equation for metrics of order $\frac{1}{2} \leq s < 1 + d/2$ is derived.

Two-component equations modelling water waves with constant vorticity

In this paper we derive a two-component system of nonlinear equations which model two-dimensional shallow water waves with constant vorticity. Then we prove well-posedness of this equation using a geometrical framework which allows us to recast this equation as a geodesic flow on an infinite dimensional manifold. Finally, we provide a criteria for global existence.

Right-invariant Sobolev metrics of fractional order on the diffeomorphism group of the circle

In this paper, we study the geodesic flow of a right-invariant metric induced by a general Fourier multiplier on the diffeomorphism group of the circle and on some of its homogeneous spaces. This study covers in particular right-invariant metrics induced by Sobolev norms of fractional order. We show that, under a certain condition on the symbol of the inertia operator (which is satisfied for the fractional Sobolev norm $H^{s}$ for $s \ge 1/2$), the corresponding initial value problem is well-posed in the smooth category and that the Riemannian exponential map is a smooth local diffeomorphism. Paradigmatic examples of our general setting cover, besides all traditional Euler equations induced by a local inertia operator, the Constantin-Lax-Majda equation, and the Euler-Weil-Petersson equation.

Bounded traveling waves for a thin film with gravity and insoluble surfactant

Lubrication equations for a surfactant-driven flow of a thin layer of fluid are considered with a singular surfactant-dependent surface tension. It is shown that there exists a bounded traveling wave solution which connects a fully surfactant-coated film to an uncoated film. The regularity of the traveling wave depends on whether or not surface diffusion of the insoluble surfactant is included.

Finite time singularity in a free boundary problem modeling MEMS

The occurrence of a finite time singularity is shown for a free boundary problem modeling microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) when the applied voltage exceeds some value. The model involves a singular nonlocal reaction term and a nonlinear curvature term accounting for large deformations.

Steady-state fingering patterns for a periodic Muskat problem

We study global bifurcation branches consisting of stationary solutions of the Muskat problem. It is proved that the steady-state fingering patterns blow up as the surface tension increases: we find a threshold value for the cell height with the property that below this value the fingers will touch the boundaries of the cell when the surface tension approaches a finite value from below; otherwise, the maximal slope of the fingers tends to infinity.

Dynamics of a free boundary problem with curvature modeling electrostatic MEMS

The dynamics of a free boundary problem for electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated. The model couples the electric potential to the deformation of the membrane, the deflection of the membrane being caused by application of a voltage difference across the device. More precisely, the electrostatic potential is a harmonic function in the angular domain that is partly bounded by the deformable membrane. The gradient trace of the electric potential on this free boundary part acts as a source term in the governing equation for the membrane deformation. The main feature of the model considered herein is that, unlike most previous research, the small deformation assumption is dropped, and curvature for the deformation of the membrane is taken into account what leads to a quasilinear parabolic equation. The free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed, locally in time for arbitrary voltage values and globally in time for small voltages values. Furthermore, existence of asymptotically stable steady-state configurations is proved in case of small voltage values as well as non-existence of steady-states if the applied voltage difference is large. Finally, convergence of solutions of the free boundary problem to the solutions of the well-established small aspect ratio model is shown.

A parabolic free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

The evolution problem for a membrane based model of an electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) is studied. The model describes the dynamics of the membrane displacement and the electric potential. The latter is a harmonic function in an angular domain, the deformable membrane being a part of the boundary. The former solves a heat equation with a right hand side that depends on the square of the trace of the gradient of the electric potential on the membrane. The resulting free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed locally in time. Furthermore, solutions corresponding to small voltage values exist globally in time while global existence is shown not to hold for high voltage values. It is also proven that, for small voltage values, there is an asymptotically stable steady-state solution. Finally, the small aspect ratio limit is rigorously justified.

On the well-posedness of a mathematical model describing water-mud interaction

In this paper we consider a mathematical model describing the two-phase interaction between water and mud in a water canal when the width of the canal is small compared to its depth. The mud is treated as a non-Netwonian fluid and the interface between the mud and fluid is allowed to move under the influence of gravity and surface tension. We reduce the mathematical formulation, for small boundary and initial data, to a fully nonlocal and nonlinear problem and prove its local well-posedness by using abstract parabolic theory.

Strong solutions of semilinear matched microstructure models

The subject of this article is a matched microstructure model for Newtonian fluid flows in fractured porous media. This is a homogenized model which takes the form of two coupled parabolic differential equations with boundary conditions in a given (two-scale) domain in Euclidean space. The main objective is to establish the local well-posedness in the strong sense of the flow. Two main settings are investigated: semi-linear systems with linear boundary conditions and semi-linear systems with nonlinear boundary conditions. With the help of analytic semigoups we establish local well-posedness and investigate the long-time behaviour of the solutions in the first case: we establish global existence and show that solutions converge to zero at an exponential rate.
