Two-Phase Flow in Rotating Hele-Shaw Cells with Coriolis Effects

The free boundary problem of a two phase flow in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell with Coriolis effects is studied. Existence and uniqueness of solutions near spheres is established, and the asymptotic stability and instability of the trivial solution is characterized in dependence on the fluid densities.

Weak solutions to a thin film model with capillary effects and insoluble surfactant

The paper focuses on a model describing the spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin viscous film with capillary effects taken into account. The governing equation for the film height is degenerate parabolic of fourth order and coupled to a second order parabolic equation for the surfactant concentration. It is shown that nonnegative weak solutions exist under natural assumptions on the surface tension coefficient.

On the parabolicity of the Muskat problem: Well-posedness, fingering, and stability results

We consider in this paper the Muskat problem in a periodic geometry and incorporate capillary as well as gravity effects in the modelling. The problem re-writes as an abstract evolution equation and we use this property to prove well-posedness of the problem and to establish exponential stability of some flat equilibrium. Using bifurcation theory we also find finger shaped steady-states which are all unstable.

Geometric aspects of the periodic $μ$-Degasperis-Procesi equation

We consider the periodic $\muDP$ equation (a modified version of the Degasperis-Procesi equation) as the geodesic flow of a right-invariant affine connection $\nabla$ on the Fréchet Lie group $\Diff^{\infty}(§^1)$ of all smooth and orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle $§^1=\R/\Z$. On the Lie algebra $\C^{\infty}(§^1)$ of $\Diff^{\infty}(§^1)$, this connection is canonically given by the sum of the Lie bracket and a bilinear operator. For smooth initial data, we show the short time existence of a smooth solution of $\muDP$ which depends smoothly on time and on the initial data. Furthermore, we prove that the exponential map defined by $\nabla$ is a smooth local diffeomorphism of a neighbourhood of zero in $\C^{\infty}(§^1)$ onto a neighbourhood of the unit element in $\Diff^{\infty}(§^1)$. Our results follow from a general approach on non-metric Euler equations on Lie groups, a Banach space approximation of the Fréchet space $\C^{\infty}(§^1)$, and a sharp spatial regularity result for the geodesic flow.

The geometry of the two-component Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations

We use geometric methods to study two natural two-component generalizations of the periodic Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. We show that these generalizations can be regarded as geodesic equations on the semidirect product of the diffeomorphism group of the circle $\Diff(S^1)$ with some space of sufficiently smooth functions on the circle. Our goals are to understand the geometric properties of these two-component systems and to prove local well-posedness in various function spaces. Furthermore, we perform some explicit curvature calculations for the two-component Camassa-Holm equation, giving explicit examples of large subspaces of positive curvature.

Steady water waves with multiple critical layers

We construct small-amplitude periodic water waves with multiple critical layers. In addition to waves with arbitrarily many critical layers and a single crest in each period, two-dimensional sets of waves with several crests and troughs in each period are found. The setting is that of steady two-dimensional finite-depth gravity water waves with vorticity.

Steady water waves with multiple critical layers: interior dynamics

We study small-amplitude steady water waves with multiple critical layers. Those are rotational two-dimensional gravity-waves propagating over a perfect fluid of finite depth. It is found that arbitrarily many critical layers with cat's-eye vortices are possible, with different structure at different levels within the fluid. The corresponding vorticity depends linearly on the stream function.

The geometry of a vorticity model equation

We provide rigorous evidence of the fact that the modified Constantin-Lax-Majda equation modeling vortex and quasi-geostrophic dynamics describes the geodesic flow on the subgroup of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms fixing one point, with respect to right-invariant metric induced by the homogeneous Sobolev norm $H^{1/2}$ and show the local existence of the geodesics in the extended group of diffeomorphisms of Sobolev class $H^{k}$ with $k\ge 2$.

Restrictions on the geometry of the periodic vorticity equation

We prove that several evolution equations arising as mathematical models for fluid motion cannot be realized as metric Euler equations on the Lie group of all smooth and orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms on the circle. These include the quasi-geostrophic model equation, the axisymmetric Euler flow in higher space dimensions, and De Gregorio's vorticity model equation.

Analysis of a mathematical model describing necrotic tumor growth

In this paper we study a model describing the growth of necrotic tumors in different regimes of vascularisation. The tumor consists of a necrotic core of death cells and a surrounding nonnecrotic shell. The corresponding mathematical formulation is a moving boundary problem where both boundaries delimiting the nonnecrotic shell are allowed to evolve in time.We determine all radially symmetric stationary solutions of the problem and reduce the moving boundary problem into a nonlinear evolution. Parabolic theory provides us the perfect context in order to show local well-posed of the problem for small initial data.

A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition for the Muskat problem

In this paper we consider the evolution of two fluid phases in a porous medium. The fluids are separated from each other and also the wetting phase from air by interfaces which evolve in time. We reduce the problem to an abstract evolution equation. A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition characterizes the parabolicity regime of the problem and allows us to establish a general well-posedness result and to study stability properties of flat steady-states. When considering surface tension effects at the interface between the fluids and if the more dense fluid lies above, we find bifurcating finger-shaped equilibria which are all unstable.

Bifurcation analysis for a free boundary problem modeling tumor growth

In this paper we deal with a free boundary problem modeling the growth of nonnecrotic tumors. The tumor is treated as an incompressible fluid, the tissue elasticity is neglected and no chemical inhibitor species are present. We re-express the mathematical model as an operator equation and by using a bifurcation argument we prove that there exist stationary solutions of the problem which are not radially symmetric.

Well-posedness and stability analysis for a moving boundary problem modelling the growth of nonnecrotic tumors

We study a moving boundary problem describing the growth of nonnecrotic tumors in different regimes of vascularisation. This model consists of two decoupled Dirichlet problem, one for the rate at which nutrient is added to the tumor domain and one for the pressure inside the tumor. These variables are coupled by a relation which describes the dynamic of the boundary. By re-expressing the problem as an abstract evolution equation, we prove local well-posedness in the small Hoelder spaces context. Further on, we use the principle of linearised stability to characterise the stability properties of the unique radially symmetric equilibrium of the problem.

The Degasperis-Procesi equation as a non-metric Euler equation

In this paper we present a geometric interpretation of the periodic Degasperis-Procesi equation as the geodesic flow of a right invariant symmetric linear connection on the diffeomorphism group of the circle. We also show that for any evolution in the family of $b$-equations there is neither gain nor loss of the spatial regularity of solutions. This in turn allows us to view the Degasperis-Procesi and the Camassa-Holm equation as an ODE on the Fréchet space of all smooth functions on the circle.
