Noncommutative resolutions and CICY quotients from a non-abelian GLSM

We discuss a one-parameter non-abelian GLSM with gauge group $(U(1)\times U(1)\times U(1))\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_3$ and its associated Calabi-Yau phases. The large volume phase is a free $\mathbb{Z}_3$-quotient of a codimension $3$ complete intersection of degree-$(1,1,1)$ hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2$. The associated Calabi-Yau differential operator has a second point of maximal unipotent monodromy, leading to the expectation that the other GLSM phase is geometric as well. However, the associated GLSM phase appears to be a hybrid model with continuous unbroken gauge symmetry and cubic superpotential, together with a Coulomb branch. Using techniques from topological string theory and mirror symmetry we collect evidence that the phase should correspond to a non-commutative resolution, in the sense of Katz-Klemm-Schimannek-Sharpe, of a codimension two complete intersection in weighted projective space with $63$ nodal points, for which a resolution has $\mathbb{Z}_3$-torsion. We compute the associated Gopakumar-Vafa invariants up to genus $11$, incorporating their torsion refinement. We identify two integral symplectic bases constructed from topological data of the mirror geometries in either phase.

A single point as a Calabi-Yau zerofold

We give a brief account of a non-abelian GLSM that describes a Calabi-Yau zerofold, in this case a single point, in the "large volume" phase. The other phase is non-regular, i.e. there is no clear separation between the gauge and the matter sectors. Prepared for the proceedings of the MATRIX program "The geometry of moduli spaces in string theory" held in September 2024.

Grade restriction and D-brane transport for a non-abelian GLSM of an elliptic curve

We discuss a simple model for D-brane transport in non-abelian GLSMs. The model is the elliptic curve version of a non-abelian GLSM introduced by Hori and Tong and has gauge group U(2). It has two geometric phases, both of which describe the same elliptic curve, once realised as a codimension five complete intersection in G(2,5) and once as a determinantal variety. The determinantal phase is strongly coupled with unbroken SU(2). There are two singular points in the moduli space where the theory has a Coulomb branch. Using grade restriction rules, we show how to transport B-branes between the two phases along paths avoiding the singular points. With the help of the GLSM hemisphere partition function we compute analytic continuation matrices and monodromy matrices, confirming results obtained by different methods.

B-type D-branes in hybrid models

A hybrid model is a fibration of a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold over a geometric base. We study B-type D-branes in hybrid models. Imposing B-type supersymmetry on the boundary action, we show that D-branes are specified by matrix factorisations in the fibre direction, together with some geometric data associated to the base. We also deduce conditions for the compatibility of these branes with the bulk orbifold actions and R-symmetry. We construct examples of hybrid B-branes which are generalisations of well-studied branes in geometric and Landau-Ginzburg models. Hybrid models can arise at limiting points of the stringy Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yaus, and can be realised as phases of the corresponding gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs). Using GLSM techniques, we establish connections between geometric branes and hybrid branes. As explicit examples, we consider one- and two-parameter Calabi-Yau hybrids with a $\mathbb{P}^1$-base.

On genus-0 invariants of Calabi-Yau hybrid models

We compute genus zero correlators of hybrid phases of Calabi-Yau gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs), i.e. of phases that are Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds fibered over some base. These correlators are generalisations of Gromov-Witten and FJRW invariants. Using previous results on the structure of the of the sphere- and hemisphere partition functions of GLSMs when evaluated in different phases, we extract the I-function and the J-function from a GLSM calculation. The J-function is the generating function of the correlators. We use the field theoretic description of hybrid models to identify the states that are inserted in these correlators. We compute the invariants for examples of one- and two-parameter hybrid models. Our results match with results from mirror symmetry and FJRW theory.

Sphere partition function of Calabi-Yau GLSMs

The sphere partition function of Calabi-Yau gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) has been shown to compute the exact Kaehler potential of the Kaehler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau. We propose a universal expression for the sphere partition function evaluated in hybrid phases of Calabi-Yau GLSMs that are fibrations of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds over some base manifold. Special cases include Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric ambient spaces and Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The key ingredients that enter the expression are Givental's I/J-functions, the Gamma class and further data associated to the hybrid model. We test the proposal for one- and two-parameter abelian GLSMs, making connections, where possible, to known results from mirror symmetry and FJRW theory.

On genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with 5-sections

Elliptic and genus one fibered Calabi-Yau spaces play a prominent role in string theory and mathematics. In this article we discuss a class of genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with 5-sections from various perspectives. In algebraic geometry, such Calabi-Yaus can be constructed as complete intersections in Grassmannian fibrations and as Pfaffian varieties. These constructions naturally fit into the framework of homological projective duality and lead to dual pairs of Calabi-Yaus. From a physics perspective, these spaces can be realised as low-energy configurations ("phases") of gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with non-Abelian gauge groups, where the dual geometries arise as phases of the same GLSM. Using the modular bootstrap approach of topological string theory, one can compute all-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of these Calabi-Yaus. We observe that homological projective duality acts as an element of $Γ_0(5)$ on the topological string partition function and the partition functions of dual geometries transform into each other. Moreover, we study the geometries from an M-/F-theory perspective. We compute the F-theory spectrum and show how the genus one-fibered Calabi-Yaus are connected to certain Calabi-Yaus in toric varieties via a series of Higgs transitions. Based on the F-theory physics, we conjecture that dual geometries are elements of the same Tate-Shafarevich group. Our analysis also leads to a classification of 5-section geometries, as well as the construction of F-theory models with charge 5 hypermultiplets.

D-brane central charge and Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds

We propose a formula for the exact central charge of a B-type D-brane that is expected to hold in all regions of the Kahler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau. For Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds we propose explicit expressions for the mathematical objects that enter into the central charge formula. We show that our results are consistent with results in FJRW theory and the hemisphere partition function of the gauged linear sigma model.

GLSMs, joins, and nonperturbatively-realized geometries

In this work we give a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) realization of pairs of homologically projective dual Calabi-Yaus that have recently been constructed in the mathematics literature. Many of the geometries can be realized mathematically in terms of joins. We discuss how joins can be described in terms of GLSMs and how the associated Calabi-Yaus arise as phases in the GLSMs. Due to strong-coupling phenomena in the GLSM, the geometries are realized via a mix of perturbative and non-perturbative effects. We apply two-dimensional gauge dualities to construct dual GLSMs. Geometries that are realized perturbatively in one GLSM, are realized non-perturbatively in the dual, and vice versa.

Refined swampland distance conjecture and exotic hybrid Calabi-Yaus

We test the refined swampland distance conjecture in the Kahler moduli space of exotic one-parameter Calabi-Yaus. We focus on examples with pseudo-hybrid points. These points, whose properties are not well-understood, are at finite distance in the moduli space. We explicitly compute the lengths of geodesics from such points to the large volume regime and show that the refined swampland distance conjecture holds. To compute the metric we use the sphere partition function of the gauged linear sigma model. We discuss several examples in detail, including one example associated to a gauged linear sigma model with non-abelian gauge group.

Hemisphere Partition Function and Monodromy

We discuss D-brane monodromies from the point of view of the gauged linear sigma model. We give a prescription on how to extract monodromy matrices directly from the hemisphere partition function. We illustrate this procedure by recomputing the monodromy matrices associated to one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projected space.

A pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds from a two parameter non-Abelian gauged linear sigma model

We construct and study a two parameter gauged linear sigma model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times O(2))/{\mathbb Z}_2$ that has a dual model with gauge group $(U(1)^2\times SO(4))/{\mathbb Z}_2$. The model has two geometric phases, three hybrid phases and one phase whose character is unknown. One of the geometric phases is strongly coupled and the other is weakly coupled, where strong versus weak is exchanged under the duality. They correspond to two Calabi-Yau manifolds with $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(2,24)$ which are birationally inequivalent but are expected to be derived equivalent. A region of the discriminant locus in the space of Fayet-Iliopoulos-theta parameters supports a mixed Coulomb-confining branch which is mapped to a mixed Coulomb-Higgs branch in the dual model.

Hemisphere Partition Function and Analytic Continuation to the Conifold Point

We show that the hemisphere partition function for certain U(1) gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with D-branes is related to a particular set of Mellin-Barnes integrals which can be used for analytic continuation to the singular point in the Kähler moduli space of an $h^{1,1}=1$ Calabi-Yau (CY) projective hypersurface. We directly compute the analytic continuation of the full quantum corrected central charge of a basis of geometric D-branes from the large volume to the singular point. In the mirror language this amounts to compute the analytic continuation of a basis of periods on the mirror CY to the conifold point. However, all calculations are done in the GLSM and we do not have to refer to the mirror CY. We apply our methods explicitly to the cubic, quartic and quintic CY hypersurfaces.

Linear Sigma Models With Strongly Coupled Phases -- One Parameter Models

We systematically construct a class of two-dimensional $(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models with phases in which a continuous subgroup of the gauge group is totally unbroken. We study some of their properties by employing a recently developed technique. The focus of the present work is on models with one Kähler parameter. The models include those corresponding to Calabi-Yau threefolds, extending three examples found earlier by a few more, as well as Calabi-Yau manifolds of other dimensions and non-Calabi-Yau manifolds. The construction leads to predictions of equivalences of D-brane categories, systematically extending earlier examples. There is another type of surprise. Two distinct superconformal field theories corresponding to Calabi-Yau threefolds with different Hodge numbers, $h^{2,1}=23$ versus $h^{2,1}=59$, have exactly the same quantum Kähler moduli space. The strong-weak duality plays a crucial rôle in confirming this, and also is useful in the actual computation of the metric on the moduli space.

PALP - a User Manual

This article provides a complete user's guide to version 2.1 of the toric geometry package PALP by Maximilian Kreuzer and others. In particular, previously undocumented applications such as the program nef.x are discussed in detail. New features of PALP 2.1 include an extension of the program mori.x which can now compute Mori cones and intersection rings of arbitrary dimension and can also take specific triangulations of reflexive polytopes as input. Furthermore, the program nef.x is enhanced by an option that allows the user to enter reflexive Gorenstein cones as input. The present documentation is complemented by a Wiki which is available online.

Toric Methods in F-theory Model Building

In this review article we discuss recent constructions of global F-theory GUT models and explain how to make use of toric geometry to do calculations within this framework. After introducing the basic properties of global F-theory GUTs we give a self-contained review of toric geometry and introduce all the tools that are necessary to construct and analyze global F-theory models. We will explain how to systematically obtain a large class of compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds which can support F-theory GUTs by using the software package PALP.

Toric Construction of Global F-Theory GUTs

We systematically construct a large number of compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds which are suitable for F-theory model building. These elliptically fibered Calabi-Yaus are complete intersections of two hypersurfaces in a six dimensional ambient space. We first construct three-dimensional base manifolds that are hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space. We search for divisors which can support an F-theory GUT. The fourfolds are obtained as elliptic fibrations over these base manifolds. We find that elementary conditions which are motivated by F-theory GUTs lead to strong constraints on the geometry, which significantly reduce the number of suitable models. The complete database of models is available at http://hep.itp.tuwien.ac.at/f-theory/. We work out several examples in more detail.

Global SO(10) F-theory GUTs

Making use of toric geometry we construct a class of global F-theory GUT models. The base manifolds are blowups of Fano threefolds and the Calabi-Yau fourfold is a complete intersection of two hypersurfaces. We identify possible GUT divisors and construct SO(10) models on them using the spectral cover construction. We use a split spectral cover to generate chiral matter on the 10 curves in order to get more degrees of freedom in phenomenology. We use abelian flux to break SO(10) to SU(5)\times U(1) which is interpreted as a flipped SU(5) model. With the GUT Higgses in the SU(5)\times U(1) model it is possible to further break the gauge symmetry to the Standard Model. We present several phenomenologically attractive examples in detail.
