Deformation Theory of Matrix Factorizations and F-Terms in the Boundary Changing Sector

We extend the deformation theory algorithm of matrix factorizations to systems with more than one D-brane. The obstructions to the deformations are F-term equations which can be integrated to an effective superpotential. We demonstrate the power of this formalism for several examples of minimal models with two or three D-branes. These are realistic toy examples for systems with multiple D-branes in Calabi-Yau threefolds since both classes of models have obstructed open moduli.

Matrix Factorizations, Massey Products and F-Terms for Two-Parameter Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

We discuss B-type tensor product branes in mirrors of two-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, using the language of matrix factorizations. We determine the open string moduli of the branes at the Gepner point. By turning on both bulk and boundary moduli we then deform the brane away from the Gepner point. Using the deformation theory of matrix factorizations we compute Massey products. These contain the information about higher order deformations and obstructions. The obstructions are encoded in the F-term equations, which we obtain from the Massey product algorithm. We show that the F-terms can be integrated to an effective superpotential. Our results provide an ingredient for open/closed mirror symmetry for these hypersurfaces.

Towards Open String Mirror Symmetry for One-Parameter Calabi-Yau Hypersurfaces

This work is concerned with branes and differential equations for one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. For a certain class of B-branes we derive the inhomogeneous Picard--Fuchs equations satisfied by the brane superpotential. In this way we arrive at a prediction for the real BPS invariants for holomorphic maps of worldsheets with low Euler characteristics, ending on the mirror A-branes.

D-Branes in Topological String Theory

This thesis is concerned with D-branes in topological string theory, focusing on the description of B-type D-branes in topological Landau-Ginzburg models. Such D-branes are characterized by matrix factorizations of the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential. After reviewing some aspects of topological string theory we give a detailed discussion of matrix factorizations. We discuss methods to calculate the effective superpotential in minimal models, putting emphasis on an algorithm to calculate the effective superpotential via deformations of matrix factorizations. We furthermore perform a non-trivial check of homological mirror symmetry for the torus.

Matrix Factorizations and Homological Mirror Symmetry on the Torus

We consider matrix factorizations and homological mirror symmetry on the torus T^2 using a Landau-Ginzburg description. We identify the basic matrix factorizations of the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential and compute the full spectrum, taking into account the explicit dependence on bulk and boundary moduli. We verify homological mirror symmetry by comparing three-point functions in the A-model and the B-model.

Matrix Factorizations, Minimal Models and Massey Products

We present a method to compute the full non-linear deformations of matrix factorizations for ADE minimal models. This method is based on the calculation of higher products in the cohomology, called Massey products. The algorithm yields a polynomial ring whose vanishing relations encode the obstructions of the deformations of the D-branes characterized by these matrix factorizations. This coincides with the critical locus of the effective superpotential which can be computed by integrating these relations. Our results for the effective superpotential are in agreement with those obtained from solving the A-infinity relations. We point out a relation to the superpotentials of Kazama-Suzuki models. We will illustrate our findings by various examples, putting emphasis on the E_6 minimal model.

On the Covariant Quantization of Type II Superstrings

In a series of papers Grassi, Policastro, Porrati and van Nieuwenhuizen have introduced a new method to covariantly quantize the GS-superstring by constructing a resolution of the pure spinor constraint of Berkovits' approach. Their latest version is based on a gauged WZNW model and a definition of physical states in terms of relative cohomology groups. We first put the off-shell formulation of the type II version of their ideas into a chirally split form and directly construct the free action of the gauged WZNW model, thus circumventing some complications of the super group manifold approach to type II. Then we discuss the BRST charges that define the relative cohomology and the N=2 superconformal algebra. A surprising result is that nilpotency of the BRST charge requires the introduction of another quartet of ghosts.
