Topological quantization of boundary forces and the integrated density of states

For quantum systems described by Schrödinger operators on the half-space $\RR^{d-1}\times\RR^{leq 0}$ the boundary force per unit area and unit energy is topologically quantised provided the Fermi energy lies in a gap of the bulk spectrum. Under this condition it is also equal to the integrated density of states at the Fermi energy.

Pattern equivariant functions and cohomology

The cohomology of a tiling or a point pattern has originally been defined via the construction of the hull or the groupoid associated with the tiling or the pattern. Here we present a construction which is more direct and therefore easier accessible. It is based on generalizing the notion of equivariance from lattices to point patterns of finite local complexity.

Universal groups for point-sets and tilings

We study the universal groups of inverse semigroups associated with point sets and with tilings. We focus our attention on two classes of examples. The first class consists of point sets which are obtained by a cut and projection scheme (so-called model sets). Here we introduce another inverse semigroup which is given in terms of the defining data of the projection scheme and related to the model set by the empire congruence. The second class is given by one-dimensional tilings.

Cohomology groups for projection point patterns

Aperiodic point sets (or tilings) which can be obtained by the method of cut and projection from higher dimensional periodic sets play an important role for the description of quasicrystals. Their topological invariants can be computed using the higher dimensional periodic structure. We report on the results obtained for the cohomology groups of projection point patterns supplemented by explicit calculations made by F. Gaehler for many well-known icosahedral tilings.

Topological invariants for projection method patterns

We analyze and compare different dynamical systems and groupoids which can be obtained from projection point patterns. We define the cohomology of a point pattern as the cocycle cohomology of the pattern groupoid. We describe this cohomology qualitatively and calculate it for canonical projection method tilings with codimension smaller or equal than 3.

Factorization dynamics and Coxeter-Toda lattices

It is shown that the factorization relation on simple Lie groups with standard Poisson Lie structure restricted to Coxeter symplectic leaves gives an integrable dynamical system. This system can be regarded as a discretization of the Toda flow. In case of $SL_n$ the integrals of the factorization dynamics are integrals of the relativistic Toda system. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the study of symplectic leaves in simple complex Lie groups, its Borel subgroups and their doubles.

Topological equivalence of tilings

We introduce a notion of equivalence on tilings which is formulated in terms of their local structure. We compare it with the known concept of locally deriving one tiling from another and show that two tilings of finite type are topologically equivalent whenever their associated groupoids are isomorphic.

The Local Structure of Tilings and their Integer Group of Coinvariants

The local structure of a tiling is described in terms of a multiplicative structure on its pattern classes. The groupoid associated to the tiling is derived from this structure and its integer group of coinvariants is defined. This group furnishes part of the $K_0$-group of the groupoid $C^*$-algebra for tilings which reduce to decorations of $\Z^d$. The group itself as well as the image of its state is computed for substitution tilings in case the substitution is locally invertible and primitive. This yields in particular the set of possible gap labels predicted by $K$-theory for Schrödinger operators describing the particle motion in such a tiling.

On $K_0$-Groups for Substitution Tilings

The group $C(\Om,\Z)/\E$ is determined for tilings which are invariant under a locally invertible primitive \sst\ which forces its \saum. In case the tiling may be obtained by the generalized dual method from a regular grid this group furnishes part of the $K_0$-group of the algebra of the tiling. Applied to Penrose tilings one obtains $K_0(\A_\tl)=\Z^8\oplus\Z$.

Gap Labelling for Schrödinger Operators on Quasiperiodic Tilings

For a large class of tilings, including those which are obtained by the generalized dual method from regular grids, it is shown that their algebra is stably isomorphic to a crossed product with $\Z^d$. Penrose tilings belong to this class. This enlarges the class of tilings of which can be shown that a set of possible gap labels is completely determined by an invariant measure on the hull.

Non Commutative Geometry of Tilings and Gap Labelling

To a given tiling a non commutative space and the corresponding C*-algebra are constructed. This includes the definition of a topology on the groupoid induced by translations of the tiling. The algebra is also the algebra of observables for discrete models of one or many particle systems on the tiling or its periodic identification. Its scaled ordered K_0-group furnishes the gap labelling of Schroedinger operators. The group is computed for one dimensional tilings and Cartesian products thereof. Its image under a state is investigated for tilings which are invariant under a substitution. Part of this image is given by an invariant measure on the hull of the tiling which is determined. The results from the Cartesian products of one dimensional tilings point out that the gap labelling by means of the values of the integrated density of states is already fully determined by this measure.

On The Algebraic Characterization of Aperiodic Tilings Related To ADE-Root Systems

\noindent The algebraic characterization of classes of locally isomorphic aperiodic tilings, being examples of quantum spaces, is conducted for a certain type of tilings in a manner proposed by A. Connes. These $2$-dimensional tilings are obtained by application of the strip method to the root lattice of an $ADE$-Coxeter group. The plane along which the strip is constructed is determined by the canonical Coxeter element leading to the result that a $2$-dimensional tiling decomposes into a cartesian product of two $1$-dimensional tilings. The properties of the tilings are investigated, including selfsimilarity, and the determination of the relevant algebraic invariant is considered, namely the ordered $K_0$-group of an algebra naturally assigned to the quantum space. The result also yields an application of the $2$-dimensional abstract gap labelling theorem.
