Topological Bragg Peaks And How They Characterise Point Sets

Bragg peaks in point set diffraction show up as eigenvalues of a dynamical system. Topological Bragg peaks arrise from topological eigenvalues and determine the torus parametrisation of the point set. We will discuss how qualitative properties of the torus parametrisation characterise the point set.

Meyer sets, topological eigenvalues, and Cantor fiber bundles

We introduce two new characterizations of Meyer sets. A repetitive Delone set in $\R^d$ with finite local complexity is topologically conjugate to a Meyer set if and only if it has $d$ linearly independent topological eigenvalues, which is if and only if it is topologically conjugate to a bundle over a $d$-torus with totally disconnected compact fiber and expansive canonical action. "Conjugate to" is a non-trivial condition, as we show that there exist sets that are topologically conjugate to Meyer sets but are not themselves Meyer. We also exhibit a diffractive set that is not Meyer, answering in the negative a question posed by Lagarias, and exhibit a Meyer set for which the measurable and topological eigenvalues are different.

Integral cohomology of rational projection method patterns

We study the cohomology and hence $K$-theory of the aperiodic tilings formed by the so called 'cut and project' method, i.e., patterns in $d$ dimensional Euclidean space which arise as sections of higher dimensional, periodic structures. They form one of the key families of patterns used in quasicrystal physics, where their topological invariants carry quantum mechanical information. Our work develops both a theoretical framework and a practical toolkit for the discussion and calculation of their integral cohomology, and extends previous work that only successfully addressed rational cohomological invariants. Our framework unifies the several previous methods used to study the cohomology of these patterns. We discuss explicit calculations for the main examples of icosahedral patterns in $R^3$ -- the Danzer tiling, the Ammann-Kramer tiling and the Canonical and Dual Canonical $D_6$ tilings, including complete computations for the first of these, as well as results for many of the better known 2 dimensional examples.

Maximal equicontinuous factors and cohomology for tiling spaces

We study the homomorphism induced on cohomology by the maximal equicontinuous factor map of a tiling space. We will see that this map is injective in degree one and has torsion free cokernel. We show by example, however, that the cohomology of the maximal equicontinuous factor may not be a direct summand of the tiling cohomology.

Torsion in Tiling Homology and Cohomology

The first author's recent unexpected discovery of torsion in the integral cohomology of the Tübingen Triangle Tiling has led to a re-evaluation of current descriptions of and calculational methods for the topological invariants associated with aperiodic tilings. The existence of torsion calls into question the previously assumed equivalence of cohomological and K-theoretic invariants as well as the supposed lack of torsion in the latter. In this paper we examine in detail the topological invariants of canonical projection tilings; we extend results of Forrest, Hunton and Kellendonk to give a full treatment of the torsion in the cohomology of such tilings in codimension at most 3, and present the additions and amendments needed to previous results and calculations in the literature. It is straightforward to give a complete treatment of the torsion components for tilings of codimension 1 and 2, but the case of codimension 3 is a good deal more complicated, and we illustrate our methods with the calculations of all four icosahedral tilings previously considered. Turning to the K-theoretic invariants, we show that cohomology and K-theory agree for all canonical projection tilings in (physical) dimension at most 3, thus proving the existence of torsion in, for example, the K-theory of the Tübingen Triangle Tiling. The question of the equivalence of cohomology and K-theory for tilings of higher dimensional euclidean space remains open.

A characterization of subshifts with bounded powers

We consider minimal, aperiodic symbolic subshifts and show how to characterize the combinatorial property of bounded powers by means of a metric property. For this purpose we construct a family of graphs which all approximate the subshift space, and define a metric on each graph which extends to a metric on the subshift space. The characterization of bounded powers is then given by the Lipschitz equivalence of a suitably defined infimum metric with the corresponding supremum metric. We also introduce zeta-functions and relate their abscissa of convergence to various exponents of complexity of the subshift.

Proximality and pure point spectrum for tiling dynamical systems

We investigate the role of the proximality relation for tiling dynamical systems. Under two hypotheses, namely that the minimal rank is finite and the set of fiber distal points has full measure we show that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) proximality is topologically closed, (ii) the minimal rank is one, (iii) the continuous eigenfunctions of the translation action span the L^2-functions over the tiling space. We apply our findings to model sets and to Meyer substitution tilings. It turns out that the Meyer property is crucial for our analysis as it allows us to replace proximality by the a priori stronger notion of strong proximality.

Equicontinuous delone dynamical systems

We characterize equicontinuous Delone dynamical systems as those coming from Delone sets with strongly almost periodic Dirac combs. Within the class of systems with nite local complexity the only equicontinuous systems are then shown to be the crystalline ones. On the other hand, within the class without nite local complexity, we exhibit examples of equicontinuous minimal Delone dynamical systems which are not crystalline. Our results solve the problem posed by Lagarias whether a Delone set whose Dirac comb is strongly almost periodic must be crystalline.

Comparing different versions of tiling cohomology

We establish direct isomorphisms between different versions of tiling cohomology. The first version is the direct limit of the cohomologies of the approximants in the Anderson-Putnam-Gähler complex, the second is the recently introduced PV-cohomolgy of Bellissard and Savinien and the third is pattern equivariant cohomology. For the last two versions one can define weak cohomology groups. We show that the isomorphisms extend to the weak versions. This leads to an alternative formulation of the pattern equivariant mixed quotient group which describes deformations of the tiling modulo topological conjugacy.

On the structure of the wave operators in one dimensional potential scattering

In the framework of one dimensional potential scattering we prove that, modulo a compact term, the wave operators can be written in terms of a universal operator and of the scattering operator. The universal operator is related to the one dimensional Hilbert transform and can be expressed as a function of the generator of dilations. As a consequence, we show how Levinson's theorem can be rewritten as an index theorem, and obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the wave operators at high and low energy and at large and small scale.

Pattern equivariant functions, deformations and equivalence of tiling spaces

We reinvestigate the theory of deformations of tilings using P-equivariant cohomology. In particular we relate the notion of asymptotically negligible shape functions introduced by Clark and Sadun to weakly P-equivariant forms. We then investigate more closely the relation between deformations of patterns and homeomorphism or topological conjugacy of pattern spaces.

Topological boundary maps in physics: General theory and applications

The material presented here covers two talks given by the authors at the conference Operator Algebras and Mathematical Physics organised in Bucharest in August 2005. The first one was a review given by J. Kellendonk on the relation between bulk and boundary topological invariants in physical systems. In the second talk S. Richard described an application of these ideas to scattering theory. It leads to a topological version of the so-called Levinson's theorem.

A topological version of Levinson's theorem

In the framework of scattering theory, we show how the scattering matrix can be related to the projection on the bound states by an index map of K-theory. Pairings with appropriate cyclic cocyles lead naturally to a topological version of Levinson's theorem.

Quantization of edge currents for continuous magnetic operators

For a magnetic Hamiltonian on a half-plane given as the sum of the Landau operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions and a random potential, a quantization theorem for the edge currents is proven. This shows that the concept of edge channels also makes sense in presence of disorder. Moreover, Gaussian bounds on the heat kernel and its covariant derivatives are obtained.

Boundary maps for $C^*$-crossed products with R with an application to the quantum Hall effect

The boundary map in K-theory arising from the Wiener-Hopf extension of a crossed product algebra with R is the Connes-Thom isomorphism. In this article the Wiener Hopf extension is combined with the Heisenberg group algebra to provide an elementary construction of a corresponding map on higher traces (and cyclic cohomology). It then follows directly from a non-commutative Stokes theorem that this map is dual w.r.t.Connes' pairing of cyclic cohomology with K-theory. As an application, we prove equality of quantized bulk and edge conductivities for the integer quantum Hall effect described by continuous magnetic Schroedinger operators.
