When Canonical Quantization Fails, Here is How to Fix It

Following Dirac, the rules of canonical quantization include classical and quantum contact transformations of classical and quantum phase space variables. While arbitrary classical canonical coordinate transformations exist that is not the case for some analogous quantum canonical coordinate transformations. This failure is due to the rigid connection of quantum variables arising by promoting the corresponding classical variable from a $c$-number to a $q$-number. A different relationship of $c$-numbers and $q$-numbers in the procedures of Enhanced Quantization shows the compatibility of all quantum operators with all classical canonical coordinate transformations.

Enhanced Quantum Procedures that Resolve Difficult Problems

A careful study of the classical/quantum connection with the aid of coherent states offers new insights into various technical problems. This analysis includes both canonical as well as closely related affine quantization procedures. The new tools are applied to several examples including: (1) A quantum formulation that is invariant under arbitrary classical canonical transformations of coordinates; (2) A toy model that for all positive energy solutions has singularities which are removed at the classical level when the correct quantum corrections are applied; (3) A fairly simple model field theory with nontrivial classical behavior that, when conventionally quantized, becomes trivial, but nevertheless finds a proper solution using the enhanced procedures; (4) A model of scalar field theories with nontrivial classical behavior that, when conventionally quantized, becomes trivial, but nevertheless finds a proper solution using the enhanced procedures; (5) A viable formulation of the kinematics of quantum gravity that respects the strict positivity of the spatial metric in both its classical and quantum versions; and (6) A proposal for a nontrivial quantization of $ϕ^4_4$ that is ripe for study by Monte Carlo computational methods. All of these examples use fairly general arguments that can be understood by a broad audience.

Nontrivial Quantization of $ϕ^4_n$, $n\ge2$

Conventional quantization of covariant scalar field models $ϕ^4_n$, for spacetime dimensions $n\ge5$ are trivial, and this may also be true for $n=4$ as well. However, an alternative ${\cal O}(\hbar)$ counterterm leads to nontrivial results for all $n\ge4$, and provides a different quantization for $n=2,3$ as well. In this article we determine the counterterm that provides these desirable properties as simply and directly as possible. The same counterterm also resolves models such as $ϕ^p_n$ for all even $p$, including those where $p>2n/(n-2)$, which are traditionally regarded as nonrenormalizable.

Revisiting Canonical Quantization

Conventional canonical quantization procedures directly link various c-number and q-number quantities. Here, we advocate a different association of classical and quantum quantities that renders classical theory a natural subset of quantum theory with \hbar>0, in conformity with the real world wherein nature has chosen \hbar>0 rather than \hbar=0. While keeping the good results of conventional procedures, some examples are presented for which the new procedures offer better results than conventional ones.

Matrix Models and Large-N Behavior

Following the procedures by which O(N)-invariant real vector models and their large-N behavior have previously been solved, we extend similar techniques to the study of real symmetric N x N-matrix models with O(N)-invariant interactions. Proper extensions to N equal infinity are also established. While no 1/N-expansions are involved in our analysis, a brief comparison of our procedures with traditional 1/N-expansion procedures is given.

Completing Canonical Quantization, and its Role in Nontrivial Scalar Field Quantization

The process of canonical quantization is redefined so that the classical and quantum theories coexist when \hbar>0, just as they do in the real world. This analysis not only supports conventional procedures, it also reveals new quantization procedures that, among several examples, permit nontrivial quantization of scalar field models such as ϕ^4_n, for every spacetime dimension n\ge2.

The finite and large-$N$ behaviors of independent-value matrix models

We investigate the finite and large $N$ behaviors of independent-value O(N)-invariant matrix models. These are models defined with matrix-type fields and with no gradient term in their action. They are generically nonrenormalizable but can be handled by nonperturbative techniques. We find that the functional of any O(N) matrix trace invariant may be expressed in terms of an O(N)-invariant measure. Based on this result, we prove that, in the limit that all interaction coupling constants go to zero, any interacting theory is continuously connected to a pseudo-free theory. This theory differs radically from the familiar free theory consisting in putting the coupling constants to zero in the initial action. The proof is given for generic finite-size matrix models, whereas, in the limiting case $N\rightarrow\infty$, we succeed in showing this behavior for restricted types of actions using a particular scaling of the parameters.

Anomalous Paths in Quantum Mechanical Path-Integrals

We investigate modifications of the discrete-time lattice action, for a quantum mechanical particle in one spatial dimension, that vanish in the naïve continuum limit but which, nevertheless, induce non-trivial effects due to quantum fluctuations. These effects are seen to modify the geometry of the paths contributing to the path-integral describing the time evolution of the particle, which we investigate through numerical simulations. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of a modified lattice action resulting in paths with any fractal dimension, d_f, between one and two. We argue that d_f=2 is a critical value, and we exhibit a type of lattice modification where the fluctuations in the position of the particle becomes independent of the time step, in which case the paths are interpreted as superdiffusive Lévy flights. We also consider the jaggedness of the paths, and show that this gives an independent classification of lattice theories.

Recent Results Regarding Affine Quantum Gravity

Recent progress in the quantization of nonrenormalizable scalar fields has found that a suitable non-classical modification of the ground state wave function leads to a result that eliminates term-by-term divergences that arise in a conventional perturbation analysis. After a brief review of both the scalar field story and the affine quantum gravity program, examination of the procedures used in the latter surprisingly shows an analogous formulation which already implies that affine quantum gravity is not plagued by divergences that arise in a standard perturbation study. Additionally, guided by the projection operator method to deal with quantum constraints, trial reproducing kernels are introduced that satisfy the diffeomorphism constraints. Furthermore, it is argued that the trial reproducing kernels for the diffeomorphism constraints may also satisfy the Hamiltonian constraint as well.

Enhanced Quantization: A Primer

Although classical mechanics and quantum mechanics are separate disciplines, we live in a world where Planck's constant \hbar>0, meaning that the classical and quantum world views must actually {\it coexist}. Traditionally, canonical quantization procedures postulate a direct linking of various c-number and q-number quantities that lie in disjoint realms, along with the quite distinct interpretations given to each realm. In this paper we propose a different association of classical and quantum quantities that renders classical theory a natural subset of quantum theory letting them coexist as required. This proposal also shines light on alternative linking assignments of classical and quantum quantities that offer different perspectives on the very meaning of quantization. In this paper we focus on elaborating the general principles, while elsewhere we have published several examples of what this alternative viewpoint can achieve; these examples include removal of singularities in classical solutions to certain models, and an alternative quantization of several field theory models that are trivial when quantized by traditional methods but become well defined and nontrivial when viewed from the new viewpoint.

Divergences in Scalar Quantum Field Theory: The Cause and the Cure

Covariant scalar fields exhibit divergences when quantized in two or more spacetime dimensions: n \geg 2. Does perturbation theory, effective theories, the renormalization group, etc., tell us all there is to know about these problems? An alternative approach identifies the cause of divergences as due to the effort to multiplicatively relate two measures that are mutually singular, while the cure for those divergences is to introduce an O(\hbar) counterterm that converts mutually singular measures into equivalent measures. This procedure leads to a nontrivial, divergence-free formulation for all n \geq 2. Finally, a critical comparison of the new methods with traditional procedures is given.

Enhanced quantization on the circle

We apply the quantization scheme introduced in [arXiv:1204.2870] to a particle on a circle. We find that the quantum action functional restricted to appropriate coherent states can be expressed as the classical action plus $\hbar$-corrections. This result extends the examples presented in the cited paper.

Coherent states for continuous spectrum operators with non-normalizable fiducial states

The problem of building coherent states from non-normalizable fiducial states is considered. We propose a way of constructing such coherent states by regularizing the divergence of the fiducial state norm. Then, we successfully apply the formalism to particular cases involving systems with a continuous spectrum: coherent states for the free particle and for the inverted oscillator $(p^2 - x^2)$ are explicitly provided. Similar ideas can be used for other systems having non-normalizable fiducial states.

The Utility of Affine Variables and Affine Coherent States

Affine coherent states are generated by affine kinematical variables much like canonical coherent states are generated by canonical kinematical variables. Although all classical and quantum formalisms normally entail canonical variables, it is shown that affine variables can serve equally well for many classical and quantum studies. This general purpose analysis provides tools to discuss two major applications: (1) the completely successful quantization of a nonrenormalizable scalar quantum field theory by affine techniques, in complete contrast to canonical techniques which only offer triviality; and (2) a formulation of the kinematical portion of quantum gravity that favors affine kinematical variables over canonical kinematical variables, and which generates a framework in which a favorable analysis of the constrained dynamical issues can take place. All this is possible because of the close connection between the affine and the canonical stories, while the few distinctions can be used to advantage when appropriate.

Extension of Berezin-Lieb Inequalities

The Berezin-Lieb inequalities provide upper and lower bounds for a partition function based on phase space integrals that involve the Glauber-Sudarshan and Husimi representations, respectively. Generalizations of these representations have recently been introduced by the present authors, and in this article, we extend the use of these new representations to develop numerous analogs of the Berezin-Lieb inequalities that may offer improved bounds. Several examples illustrate the use of the new inequalities. Although motivated by problems in quantum mechanics, these results may also find applications in time-frequency analysis, a valuable cross fertilization that has been profitably used at various times in the past.

Scalar Field Quantization Without Divergences In All Spacetime Dimensions

Covariant, self-interacting scalar quantum field theories admit solutions for low enough spacetime dimensions, but when additional divergences appear in higher dimensions, the traditional approach leads to results, such as triviality, that are less than satisfactory. Guided by idealized but soluble {\it non}renormalizable models, a nontraditional proposal for the quantization of covariant scalar field theories is advanced, which achieves a term-by-term, divergence-free, perturbation analysis of interacting models expanded about a suitable pseudofree theory, which differs from a free theory by an O(\hbar^2) counterterm. These positive features are realized within a functional integral formulation by a local, nonclassical, counterterm that effectively transforms parameter changes in the action from generating mutually singular measures, which are the basis for divergences, to equivalent measures, thereby removing all divergences. The use of an alternative model about which to perturb is already supported by properties of the classical theory, and is allowed by the inherent ambiguity in the quantization process itself. This procedure not only provides acceptable solutions for models for which no acceptable, faithful solution currently exists, e.g., ϕ^4_n, for spacetime dimensions n\ge4, but offers a new, divergence-free solution, for less-singular models as well, e.g., ϕ^4_n, for n=2,3. Our analysis implies similar properties for multicomponent scalar models, such as those associated with the Higgs model.

Proposal for Divergence-Free Quantization of Covariant Scalar Fields

Guided by idealized but soluble nonrenormalizable models, a nontraditional proposal for the quantization of covariant scalar field theories is advanced, which achieves a term-by-term, divergence-free perturbation analysis of interacting models expanded about a suitable pseudofree theory (differing from a free theory by an $\hbar$ term). This procedure not only provides acceptable solutions for models for which no acceptable solution currently exists, e.g., $ϕ^4_n$, for spacetime dimension $n\ge4$, but offers a new, divergence-free solution, for less-singular models as well, e.g., $ϕ^4_n$, for $n=2,3$.

On the role of coherent states in quantum foundations

Coherent states, and the Hilbert space representations they generate, provide ideal tools to discuss classical/quantum relationships. In this paper we analyze three separate classical/quantum problems using coherent states, and show that useful connections arise among them. The topics discussed are: (1) a truly natural formulation of phase space path integrals; (2) how this analysis implies that the usual classical formalism is ``simply a subset'' of the quantum formalism, and thus demonstrates a universal coexistence of both the classical and quantum formalisms; and (3) how these two insights lead to a complete analytic solution of a formerly insoluble family of nonlinear quantum field theory models.
