New Affine Coherent States based on Elements of Nonrenormalizable Scalar Field Models

Recent proposals for a nontrivial quantization of covariant, nonrenormalizable, self-interacting, scalar quantum fields have emphasized the importance of quantum fields that obey affine commutation relations rather than canonical commutation relations. When formulated on a spacetime lattice, such models have a lattice version of the associated ground state, and this vector is used as the fiducial vector for the definition of the associated affine coherent states, thus ensuring that in the continuum limit, the affine field operators are compatible with the system Hamiltonian. In this article, we define and analyze the associated affine coherent states as well as briefly review the author's approach to nontrivial formulations of such nonrenormalizable models.

An Affinity for Affine Quantum Gravity

The main principle of affine quantum gravity is the strict positivity of the matrix \{\hat g_{ab}(x)\} composed of the spatial components of the local metric operator. Canonical commutation relations are incompatible with this principle, and they can be replaced by noncanonical, affine commutation relations. Due to the partial second-class nature of the quantum gravitational constraints, it is advantageous to use the projection operator method, which treats all quantum constraints on an equal footing. Using this method, enforcement of regularized versions of the gravitational constraint operators is formulated quite naturally as a novel and relatively well-defined functional integral involving only the same set of variables that appears in the usual classical formulation. Although perturbatively nonrenormalizable, gravity may possibly be understood nonperturbatively from a hard-core perspective that has proved valuable for specialized models.

Ladder operators and coherent states for continuous spectra

The notion of ladder operators is introduced for systems with continuous spectra. We identify two different kinds of annihilation operators allowing the definition of coherent states as modified "eigenvectors" of these operators. Axioms of Gazeau-Klauder are maintained throughout the construction.

Taming Nonrenormalizability

Nonrenormalizable scalar fields, such as φ^4_n, n\ge5, require infinitely many distinct counter terms when perturbed about the free theory, and lead to free theories when defined as the continuum limit of a lattice regularized theory restricted only to arbitrary mass and coupling constant renormalization. Based on the proposal that functional integrals for interacting nonrenormalizable models do not reduce to the expression for the free field functional integral as the coupling constant vanishes -- a proposal supported by the fact that even the set of classical solutions for such models does not reduce to the set of free field solutions as the coupling constant vanishes -- it has been conjectured that for nonrenormalizable models the interaction term acts partially as a hard core eliminating certain fields otherwise allowed by the free theory. As a consequence, interacting models are continuously connected to a pseudofree theory that takes into account the hard core as the coupling constant vanishes, and this general view is supported not only by simple quantum mechanical examples as well as soluble but nonrelativistic nonrenormalizable models. The present article proposes a pseudofree model for relativistic nonrenormalizable models about which it is argued that a perturbation expansion of the interaction is term-by-term divergence free.

Rethinking Renormalization

As applied to quantum theories, the program of renormalization is successful for `renormalizable models' but fails for `nonrenormalizable models'. After some conceptual discussion and analysis, an enhanced program of renormalization is proposed that is designed to bring the `nonrenormalizable models' under control as well. The new principles are developed by studying several, carefully chosen, soluble examples, and include a recognition of a `hard-core' behavior of the interaction and, in special cases, an extremely elementary procedure to remove the source of all divergences. Our discussion provides the background for a recent proposal for a nontrivial quantization of nonrenormalizable scalar quantum field models, which is briefly summarized as well.

Divergence-free Nonrenormalizable Models

A natural procedure is introduced to replace the traditional, perturbatively generated counter terms to yield a formulation of covariant, self-interacting, nonrenormalizable scalar quantum field theories that has the added virtue of exhibiting a divergence-free perturbation analysis. To achieve this desirable goal it is necessary to reexamine the meaning of the free theory about which such a perturbation takes place.

Functional Integrals in Affine Quantum Gravity

A sketch of a recent approach to quantum gravity is presented which involves several unconventional aspects. The basic ingredients include: (1) Affine kinematical variables; (2) Affine coherent states; (3) Projection operator approach for quantum constraints; (4) Continuous-time regularized functional integral representation without/with constraints; and (5) Hard core picture of nonrenormalizability. Emphasis is given to the functional integral expressions.

Generalized Phase Space Representation of Operators

Introducing asymmetry into the Weyl representation of operators leads to a variety of phase space representations and new symbols. Specific generalizations of the Husimi and the Glauber-Sudarshan symbols are explicitly derived

Fundamentals of Quantum Gravity

The outline of a recent approach to quantum gravity is presented. Novel ingredients include: (1) Affine kinematical variables; (2) Affine coherent states; (3) Projection operator approach toward quantum constraints; (4) Continuous-time regularized functional integral representation without/with constraints; and (5) Hard core picture of nonrenormalizability. The ``diagonal representation'' for operator representations, introduced by Sudarshan into quantum optics, arises naturally within this program.

A New Approach to Nonrenormalizable Models

Nonrenormalizable quantum field theories require counterterms; and based on the hard-core interpretation of such interactions, it is initially argued, contrary to the standard view, that counterterms suggested by renormalized perturbation theory are in fact inappropriate for this purpose. Guided by the potential underlying causes of triviality of such models, as obtained by alternative analyses, we focus attention on the ground-state distribution function, and suggest a formulation of such distributions that exhibits nontriviality from the start. Primary discussion is focused on self-interacting scalar fields. Conditions for bounds on general correlation functions are derived, and there is some discussion of the issues involved with the continuum limit.

Linearized Quantum Gravity Using the Projection Operator Formalism

The theory of canonical linearized gravity is quantized using the Projection Operator formalism, in which no gauge or coordinate choices are made. The ADM Hamiltonian is used and the canonical variables and constraints are expanded around a flat background. As a result of the coordinate independence and linear truncation of the perturbation series, the constraint algebra surprisingly becomes partially second-class in both the classical and quantum pictures after all secondary constraints are considered. While new features emerge in the constraint structure, the end result is the same as previously reported: the (separable) physical Hilbert space still only depends on the transverse-traceless degrees of freedom.

Highly Irregular Quantum Constraints

Motivated by a recent paper of Louko and Molgado, we consider a simple system with a single classical constraint R(q)=0. If q_l denotes a generic solution to R(q)=0, our examples include cases where R'(q_l)\ne 0 (regular constraint) and R'(q_l)=0 (irregular constraint) of varying order as well as the case where R(q)=0 for an interval, such as a \leq q \leq b. Quantization of irregular constraints is normally not considered; however, using the projection operator formalism we provide a satisfactory quantization which reduces to the constrained classical system when \hbar \to 0. It is noteworthy that irregular constraints change the observable aspects of a theory as compared to strictly regular constraints.

Infinite Divisibility in Euclidean Quantum Mechanics

In simple -- but selected -- quantum systems, the probability distribution determined by the ground state wave function is infinitely divisible. Like all simple quantum systems, the Euclidean temporal extension leads to a system that involves a stochastic variable and which can be characterized by a probability distribution on continuous paths. The restriction of the latter distribution to sharp time expectations recovers the infinitely divisible behavior of the ground state probability distribution, and the question is raised whether or not the temporally extended probability distribution retains the property of being infinitely divisible. A similar question extended to a quantum field theory relates to whether or not such systems would have nontrivial scattering behavior.

Path Integrals, and Classical and Quantum Constraints

Systems with constraints pose problems when they are quantized. Moreover, the Dirac procedure of quantization prior to reduction is preferred. The projection operator method of quantization, which can be most conveniently described by coherent state path integrals, enables one to directly impose a regularized form of the quantum constraints. This procedure also overcomes conventional difficulties with normalization and second class constraints that invalidate conventional Dirac quantization procedures.

Elementary Model of Constraint Quantization with an Anomaly

Quantum gravity is made more difficult in part by its constraint structure. The constraints are classically first-class; however, upon quantization they become partially second-class. To study such behavior, we focus on a simple problem with finitely many degrees of freedom and demonstrate how the projection operator formalism for dealing with quantum constraints is well suited to this type of example.

Attractions of Affine Quantum Gravity

All attempts to quantize gravity face several difficult problems. Among these problems are: (i) metric positivity (positivity of the spatial distance between distinct points), (ii) the presence of anomalies (partial second-class nature of the quantum constraints), and (iii) perturbative nonrenormalizability (the need for infinitely many distinct counterterms). In this report, a relatively nontechnical discussion is presented about how the program of affine quantum gravity proposes to deal with these problems.
