Spin-orbit effects on the spin and pseudospin polarization in ac-driven silicene

We study the pseudospin and spin dynamical effects in single-layer silicene due to a perpendicular electric field periodically driven and its interplay with the intrinsic and extrinsic (Rashba) spin-orbit interaction. We find that the spin nonconserving processes of the real spin of the quasiparticles in silicene, -- induced by the rather weak spin-orbit mechanisms --, manifest themselves as shifts of the resonances of its quasienergy spectrum in the low coupling regime to the driving field. We show that there is an interesting cooperative effect among the, in principle, competing Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit contributions. This is explicitly illustrated by exact and approximated analytical solutions of the dynamical equations. In addition, we show that a finite Rashba spin-orbit interaction is indeed necessary in order to achieve a nonvanishing spin polarization. As additional feature, trivial and nontrivial topological phases might be distinguished from each other as fast or slow dynamical fluctuations of the spin polarization. We mention the possible experimental detection schemes of our theoretical results and their relevance in new practical implementation of periodically driven interactions in silicene physics and related two-dimensional systems.

Magnetoconductance correction in zinc-blende semiconductor nanowires with spin-orbit coupling

We study the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the magnetoconductivity in diffusive cylindrical semiconductor nanowires. Following up on our former study on tubular semiconductor nanowires, we focus in this paper on nanowire systems where no surface accumulation layer is formed but instead the electron wave function extends over the entire cross section. We take into account the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling resulting from a zinc-blende lattice and the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which is controlled by a lateral gate electrode. The spin relaxation rate due to Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling is found to depend neither on the spin density component nor on the wire growth direction and is unaffected by the radial boundary. In contrast, the Rashba spin relaxation rate is strongly reduced for a wire radius that is smaller than the spin precession length. The derived model is fitted to the data of magnetoconductance measurements of a heavily doped back-gated InAs nanowire and transport parameters are extracted. At last, we compare our results to previous theoretical and experimental studies and discuss the occurring discrepancies.

Entanglement spectra of superconductivity ground states on the honeycomb lattice

We analytically evaluate the entanglement spectra of the superconductivity states in graphene, primarily focusing on the s-wave and chiral $ d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy} $ superconductivity states. We demonstrate that the topology of the entanglement Hamiltonian can differ from that of the subsystem Hamiltonian. In particular, the topological properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian of the chiral $ d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy} $ superconductivity state obtained by tracing out one spin direction clearly differ from those of the time-reversal invariant Hamiltonian of noninteracting fermions on the honeycomb lattice.

Weak (anti)localization in tubular semiconductor nanowires with spin-orbit coupling

We compute analytically the weak (anti)localization correction to the Drude conductivity for electrons in tubular semiconductor systems of zinc blende type. We include linear Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and compare wires of standard growth directions $\langle100\rangle$, $\langle111\rangle$, and $\langle110\rangle$. The motion on the quasi-two-dimensional surface is considered diffusive in both directions: transversal as well as along the cylinder axis. It is shown that Dresselhaus and Rashba SOC similarly affect the spin relaxation rates. For the $\langle110\rangle$ growth direction, the long-lived spin states are of helical nature. We detect a crossover from weak localization to weak anti-localization depending on spin-orbit coupling strength as well as dephasing and scattering rate. The theory is fitted to experimental data of an undoped $\langle111\rangle$ InAs nanowire device which exhibits a top-gate-controlled crossover from positive to negative magnetoconductivity. Thereby, we extract transport parameters where we quantify the distinct types of SOC individually.

Control of Spin Helix Symmetry in Semiconductor Quantum Wells by Crystal Orientation

We investigate the possibility of spin-preserving symmetries due to the interplay of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in n-doped zinc-blende semiconductor quantum wells of general crystal orientation. It is shown that a conserved spin operator can be realized if and only if at least two growth-direction Miller indices agree in modulus. The according spin-orbit field has in general both in-plane and out-of-plane components and is always perpendicular to the shift vector of the corresponding persistent spin helix. We also analyze higher-order effects arising from the Dresselhaus term, and the impact of our results on weak (anti)localization corrections.

Persistent Spin Textures in Semiconductor Nanostructures

Device concepts in semiconductor spintronics make long spin lifetimes desirable, and the requirements put on spin control by schemes of quantum information processing are even more demanding. Unfortunately, due to spin-orbit coupling electron spins in semiconductors are generically subject to rather fast decoherence. In two-dimensional quantum wells made of zinc-blende semiconductors, however, the spin-orbit interaction can be engineered in such a way that persistent spin structures with extraordinarily long spin lifetimes arise even in the presence of disorder and imperfections. We review experimental and theoretical developments on this subject both for $n$-doped and $p$-doped structures, and we discuss possible device applications.

Spin polarisation by current

This is an overview of current-induced spin polarization in gyrotropic semiconductor nanostructures. Such a spin polarization as response to a charge current may be classified as the inverse of the spin-galvanic effect, and sometimes is called as magneto-electrical effect or Edelstein (Rashba-Edelstein) effect. Apart from reviewing the experimental status of affairs, we have provided a detailed theoretical description of both effects in terms of a phenomenological model of spin-dependent relaxation processes, and an alternative theoretical approach based on the quasi-classical Boltzmann equation.

Conserved Spin Quantity in Strained Hole Systems with Rashba and Dresselhaus Spin-Orbit Coupling

We derive an effective Hamiltonian for a (001)-confined quasi-two-dimensional hole gas in a strained zincblende semiconductor heterostructure including both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. In the presence of uniaxial strain along the $\left\langle110\right\rangle$ axes, we find a conserved spin quantity in the vicinity of the Fermi contours in the lowest valence subband. In contrast to previous works, this quantity meets realistic requirements for the Luttinger parameters. For more restrictive conditions, we even find a conserved spin quantity for vanishing strain, restricted to the vicinity of the Fermi surface.

Trigonal Warping in Bilayer Graphene: Energy versus Entanglement Spectrum

We present a mainly analytical study of the entanglement spectrum of Bernal-stacked graphene bilayers in the presence of trigonal warping in the energy spectrum. Upon tracing out one layer, the entanglement spectrum shows qualitative geometric differences to the energy spectrum of a graphene monolayer. However, topological quantities such as Berry phase type contributions to Chern numbers agree. The latter analysis involves not only the eigenvalues of the entanglement Hamiltonian but also its eigenvectors. We also discuss the entanglement spectra resulting from tracing out other sublattices. As a technical basis of our analysis we provide closed analytical expressions for the full eigensystem of bilayer graphene in the entire Brillouin zone with a trigonally warped spectrum.

Coherent States of su(1,1): Correlations, Fluctuations, and the Pseudoharmonic Oscillator

We extend recent results on expectation values of coherent oscillator states and SU(2) coherent states to the case of the discrete representations of su(1,1). Systematic semiclassical expansions of products of arbitrary operators are derived. In particular, the leading order of the energy uncertainty of an arbitrary Hamiltonian is found to be given purely in terms of the time dependence of the classical variables. The coherent states considered here include the Perelomov-Gilmore coherent states. As an important application we discuss the pseudoharmonic oscillator and compare the Perelomov-Gilmore states with the states introduced by Barut and Girardello. The latter ones turn out to be closer to the classical limit as their relative energy variance decays with the inverse square root of energy, while in the former case a constant is approached.

Laser induced modulation of the Landau level structure in single-layer graphene

We present perturbative analytical results of the Landau level quasienergy spectrum, autocorrelation function and out of plane pseudospin polarization for a single graphene sheet subject to intense circularly polarized terahertz radiation. For the quasienergy spectrum, we find a striking non trivial level-dependent dynamically induced gap structure. This photoinduced modulation of the energy band structure gives rise to shifts of the revival times in the autocorrelation function and it also leads to modulation of the oscillations in the dynamical evolution of the out of plane pseudospin polarization, which measures the angular momentum transfer between light and graphene electrons. For a coherent state, chosen as an initial pseudospin configuration, the dynamics induces additional quantum revivals of the wave function that manifest as shifts of the maxima and minima of the autocorrelation function, with additional partial revivals and beating patterns. These additional maxima and beating patterns stem from the effective dynamical coupling of the static eigenstates. We discuss the possible experimental detection schemes of our theoretical results and their relevance in new practical implementation of radiation fields in graphene physics.

Coherent Quantum Dynamics: What Fluctuations Can Tell

Coherent states provide a natural connection of quantum systems to their classical limit and are employed in various fields of physics. Here we derive general systematic expansions, with respect to quantum parameters, of expectation values of products of arbitrary operators within both oscillator coherent states and SU(2) coherent states. In particular, we generally prove that the energy fluctuations of an arbitrary Hamiltonian are in leading order entirely due to the time dependence of the classical variables. These results add to the list of wellknown properties of coherent states and are applied here to the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, the Dicke model, and to coherent intertwiners in spin networks as considered in Loop Quantum Gravity.

Lifetimes of Magnons in Two-Dimensional Diluted Ferromagnetic Systems

Spin dynamics in low dimensional magnetic systems has been of fundamental importance for a long time and has currently received an impetus owing to the emerging field of nanoelectronics. Knowledge of the spin wave lifetimes, in particular, can be favorable for future potential applications. We investigate the low-temperature spin wave excitations in two-dimensional disordered ferromagnetic systems, with a particular focus on the long wavelength magnon lifetimes. A semi-analytical Green's functions based approach is used to determine the dynamical spectral functions, for different magnetic impurity concentrations, from which the intrinsic linewidth is extracted. We obtain an unambiguous $q^4$ scaling of the magnon linewidth which is ascribed to the disorder induced damping of the spin waves, thereby settling a longstanding unresolved issue on the wave-vector dependence. Our findings are also in good agreement with previous theoretical studies on Heisenberg ferromagnets. Additionally, we demonstrate the futility of using the low moments associated with the spectral densities to evaluate the magnon dispersions and lifetimes.

Photoinduced pseudospin effects in silicene beyond the off resonant condition

We study the photoinduced manipulation of charge carriers in monolayer silicene subject to intense electromagnetic terahertz radiation. Considering the Dirac cone approximation and going beyond the off resonant condition for large frequencies of the radiation field, where only virtual photon processes are allowed, we present the exact zero-momentum pseudospin polarization and numerical results for the quasienergy band structure and time-averaged density of states. We find that resonant processes, due to real photon emission and absorbtion processes, induce a band inversion that qualitatively modifies the quasienergy spectrum. These band structure changes manifest themselves as an inversion of the averaged pseudospin polarization. Through the analysis of the time-averaged density of states we find that effective photoinduced gap manipulation can only be achieved in the intermediate and strong matter-radiation coupling regime where the off resonant approximation breaks down.

Classical and Quantum Polyhedra

Quantum polyhedra constructed from angular momentum operators are the building blocks of space in its quantum description as advocated by Loop Quantum Gravity. Here we extend previous results on the semiclassical properties of quantum polyhedra. Regarding tetrahedra, we compare the results from a canonical quantization of the classical system with a recent wave function based approach to the large-volume sector of the quantum system. Both methods agree in the leading order of the resulting effective operator (given by an harmonic oscillator), while minor differences occur in higher corrections. Perturbative inclusion of such corrections improves the approximation to the eigenstates. Moreover, the comparison of both methods leads also to a full wave function description of the eigenstates of the (square of the) volume operator at negative eigenvalues of large modulus. For the case of general quantum polyhedra described by discrete angular momentum quantum numbers we formulate a set of quantum operators fulfilling in the semiclassical regime the standard commutation relations between momentum and position. Differently from previous formulations, the position variable here is chosen to have dimension of (Planck) length squared which facilitates the identification of quantum corrections. Finally, we provide expressions for the pentahedral volume in terms of Kapovich-Millson variables.

Signatures of spin-preserving symmetries in two-dimensional hole gases

We investigate ramifications of the persistent spin helix symmetry in two-dimensional hole gases in the conductance of disordered mesoscopic systems. To this end we extend previous models by going beyond the axial approximation for III-V semiconductors. For heavy-hole subbands we identify an exact spin-preserving symmetry analogous to the electronic case by analyzing the crossover from weak antilocalization to weak localization and spin transmission as a function of extrinsic spin-orbit interaction strength.

Entanglement Thermodynamics

We investigate further the relationship between the entanglement spectrum of a composite many-body system and the energy spectrum of a subsystem making use of concepts of canonical thermodynamics. In many important cases the entanglement Hamiltonian is, in the limit of strong coupling between subsystems, proportional to the energy Hamiltonian of the subsystem. The proportionality factor is an appropriately defined coupling parameter, suggesting to interpret the latter as a inverse temperature. We identify a condition on the entanglement Hamiltonian which rigorously guarantees this interpretation to hold and removes any ambiguity in the definition of the entanglement Hamiltonian regarding contributions proportional to the unit operator. Illustrations of our findings are provided by spin ladders of arbitrary spin length, and by bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor nu=2. Within mean-field description, the latter system realizes an entanglement spectrum of free fermions with just two levels of equal modulus where the analogies to canonical thermodynamics are particularly close.

Ultra long spin decoherence times in graphene quantum dots with a small number of nuclear spins

We study the dynamics of an electron spin in a graphene quantum dot, which is interacting with a bath of less than ten nuclear spins via the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. Due to substantial progress in the fabrication of graphene quantum dots, the consideration of such a small number of nuclear spins is experimentally relevant. This choice allows us to use exact diagonalization to calculate the longtime average of the electron spin as well as its decoherence time. We investigate the dependence of spin observables on the initial states of nuclear spins and on the position of nuclear spins in the quantum dot. Moreover, we analyze the effects of the anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction for different orientations of the spin quantization axis with respect to the graphene plane. Interestingly, we then predict remarkable long decoherence times of more than 10ms in the limit of few nuclear spins.
