The Large-Volume Limit of a Quantum Tetrahedron is a Quantum Harmonic Oscillator

It is shown that the volume operator of a quantum tetrahedron is, in the sector of large eigenvalues, accurately described by a quantum harmonic oscillator. This result relies on the fact that (i) the volume operator couples only neighboring states of its standard basis, and (ii) its matrix elements show a unique maximum as a function of internal angular momentum quantum numbers. These quantum numbers, considered as a continuous variable, are the coordinate of the oscillator describing its quadratic potential, while the corresponding derivative defines a momentum operator. We also analyze the scaling properties of the oscillator parameters as a function of the size of the tetrahedron, and the role of different angular momentum coupling schemes.

Interplay between spin-orbit interactions and a time-dependent electromagnetic field in monolayer graphene

We apply a circularly and linearly polarized terahertz field on a monolayer of graphene taking into account spin-orbit interactions of the intrinsic and Rashba type. It turns out that the field can not only be used to induce a gap in the energy spectrum, but also to close an existing gap due to the different reaction of the spin components on circularly polarized light. Signatures of spin-orbit coupling on the density of states of the driven system can be observed even for energies where the static density of states is independent of spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore it is shown that the time evolution of the spin polarization and the orbital dynamics of an initial wave packet can be modulated by varying the ratio of the spin-orbit coupling parameters. Assuming that the system acquires a quasi stationary state, the optical conductivity of the irradiated sample is calculated. Our results confirm the multi step nature of the conductivity obtained recently, where the number of intermediate steps can be changed by adjusting the spin-orbit coupling parameters and the orientation of the field.

Plasmons and screening in a monolayer of MoS$_2$

We investigate the dynamical dielectric function of a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide within the random phase approximation. While in graphene damping of plasmons is caused by interband transitions, due to the large direct band gap in monolayer MoS$_2$ collective charge excitations enter the intraband electron hole continuum similar to the situation in two-dimensional electron and hole gases. Since there is no electron-hole symmetry in MoS$_2$, the plasmon energies in p- and n-doped samples clearly differ. The breaking of spin degeneracy caused by the large intrinsic spin-orbit interaction leads to a beating of Friedel oscillations for sufficiently large carrier concentrations, for holes as well as for electrons.

Entanglement Spectra and Entanglement Thermodynamics of Hofstadter Bilayers

We study Hofstadter bilayers, i.e. coupled hopping models on two-dimensional square lattices in a perpendicular magnetic field. Upon tracing out one of the layers, we find an explicit expression for the resulting entanglement spectrum in terms of the energy eigenvalues of the underlying monolayer system. For strongly coupled layers the entanglement Hamiltonian is proportional to the energetic Hamiltonian of the monolayer system. The proportionality factor, however, cannot be interpreted as the inverse thermodynamic temperature, but represents a phenomenological temperature scale. We derive an explicit relation between both temperature scales which is in close analogy to a standard result of classic thermodynamics. In the limit of vanishing temperature, thermodynamic quantities such as entropy and inner energy approach their ground-state values, but show a fractal structure as a function of magnetic flux.

Plasmons in spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional hole gas systems

We study the dynamical dielectric function of a two-dimensional hole gas, exemplified on [001]-GaAs and InAs quantum wells, within the Luttinger model extended to the two lowest subbands including bulk and structure inversion asymmetric terms. The plasmon dispersion shows a pronounced anisotropy for GaAs- and InAs-based systems. In GaAs this leads to a suppression of plasmons due to Landau damping in some orientations. Due to the large Rashba contribution in InAs, the lifetime of plasmons can be controlled by changing the electric field. This effect is potentially useful in plasmon field effect transistors as previously proposed for electron gases.

Entanglement Spectra of Heisenberg Ladders of higher Spin

We study the entanglement spectrum of Heisenberg spin ladders of arbitrary spin length S in the perturbative regime of strong rung coupling. For isotropic spin coupling the the entanglement spectrum is, within first order perturbation theory, always proportional to the energy spectrum of the single chain with a proportionality factor being also independent of S. A more complicated situation arises for anisotropic ladders of higher spin S>=1 since here even the unperturbed ground state has a nontrivial entanglement spectrum. Finally we discuss related issues in dimerized spin chains.

Dielectric function, screening, and plasmons of graphene in the presence of spin-orbit interactions

We study the dielectric properties of graphene in the presence of Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit interactions in their most general form, i.e., for arbitrary frequency, wave vector, doping, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) parameters. The main result consists in the derivation of closed analytical expressions for the imaginary as well as for the real part of the polarization function. Several limiting cases, e.g., the case of purely Rashba or purely intrinsic SOC, and the case of equally large Rashba and intrinsic coupling parameters are discussed. In the static limit the asymptotic behavior of the screened potential due to charged impurities is derived. In the opposite limit ($q=0$, $ω\to0$), an analytical expression for the plasmon dispersion is obtained and afterwards compared to the numerical result. Our result can also be applied to related systems such as bilayer graphene or topological insulators.

Polarization-sensitive absorption of THz radiation by interacting electrons in chirally stacked multilayer graphene

We show that opacity of a clean multilayer graphene flake depends on the helicity of the circular polarized electromagnetic radiation. The effect can be understood in terms of the pseudospin selection rules for the interband optical transitions in the presence of exchange electron-electron interactions which alter the pseudospin texture in momentum space. The interactions described within a semi-analytical Hartree--Fock approach lead to the formation of the topologically different broken--symmetry states characterized by Chern numbers and zero-field anomalous Hall conductivities.

Hyperfine induced electron spin and entanglement dynamics in double quantum dots: The case of separate baths

We consider a system of two strongly coupled electron spins in zero magnetic field, each of which is interacting with an individual bath of nuclear spins via the hyperfine interaction. Applying the long spin approximation (LSA) introduced in Europhys. Lett. 95, 47009 (here each bath is replaced by a single long spin), we numerically study the electron spin and entanglement dynamics. We demonstrate that the decoherence time is scaling with the bath size according to a power law. As expected, the decaying part of the dynamics decreases with increasing bath polarization. However, surprisingly it turns out that, under certain circumstances, combining quantum dots of different geometry to the double dot setup has a very similar effect on the magnitude of the spin decay. Finally, we show that even for a comparatively weak exchange coupling the electron spins can be fully entangled.

Perturbative regimes in central spin models

Central spin models describe several types of solid state nanostructures which are presently considered as possible building blocks of future quantum information processing hardware. From a theoretical point of view, a key issue remains the treatment of the flip-flop terms in the Hamiltonian in the presence of a magnetic field. We systematically study the influence of these terms, both as a function of the field strength and the size of the spin baths. We find crucial differences between initial states with central spin configurations of high and such of low polarizations. This has strong implications with respect to the influence of a magnetic field on the flip-flop terms in central spin models of a single and more than one central spin. Furthermore, the dependencies on bath size and field differ from those anticipated so far. Our results might open the route for the systematic search for more efficient perturbative treatments of central spin problems.

Energy spectrum and Landau levels in bilayer graphene with spin-orbit interaction

We present a theoretical study of the bandstructure and Landau levels in bilayer graphene at low energies in the presence of a transverse magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the regime of negligible trigonal distortion. Within an effective low energy approach (Löwdin partitioning theory) we derive an effective Hamiltonian for bilayer graphene that incorporates the influence of the Zeeman effect, the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, and inclusively, the role of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction on the same footing. Particular attention is spent to the energy spectrum and Landau levels. Our modeling unveil the strong influence of the Rashba coupling $λ_R $ in the spin-splitting of the electron and hole bands. Graphene bilayers with weak Rashba spin-orbit interaction show a spin-splitting linear in momentum and proportional to $λ_R $, but scales inversely proportional to the interlayer hopping energy $γ_1$. However, at robust spin-orbit coupling $λ_R $ the energy spectrum shows a strong warping behavior near the Dirac points. We find the bias-induced gap in bilayer graphene to be decreasing with increasing Rashba coupling, a behavior resembling a topological insulator transition. We further predict an unexpected assymetric spin-splitting and crossings of the Landau levels due to the interplay between the Rashba interaction and the external bias voltage. Our results are of relevance for interpreting magnetotransport and infrared cyclotron resonance measurements, including also situations of comparatively weak spin-orbit coupling.

Entanglement spectra of coupled S=1/2 spin chains in a ladder geometry

We study the entanglement spectrum of spin-1/2 XXZ ladders both analytically and numerically. Our analytical approach is based on perturbation theory starting either from the limit of strong rung coupling, or from the opposite case of dominant coupling along the legs. In the former case we find to leading order that the entanglement Hamiltonian is also of nearest-neighbor XXZ form although with an in general renormalized anisotropy. For the cases of XX and isotropic Heisenberg ladders no such renormalization takes place. In the Heisenberg case the second order correction to the entanglement Hamiltonian consists of a renormalization of the nearest neighbor coupling plus an unfrustrated next nearest neighbor coupling. In the opposite regime of strong coupling along the legs, we point out an interesting connection of the entanglement spectrum to the Lehmann representation of single chain spectral functions of operators appearing in the physical Hamiltonian coupling the two chains.

Swapping and entangling hyperfine coupled nuclear spin baths

We numerically study the hyperfine induced nuclear spin dynamics in a system of two coupled quantum dots in zero magnetic field. Each of the electron spins is considered to interact with an individual bath of nuclear spins via homogeneous coupling constants (all coupling coefficients being equal). In order to lower the dimension of the problem, the two baths are approximated by two single long spins. We demonstrate that the hyperfine interaction enables to utilize the nuclear baths for quantum information purposes. In particular, we show that it is possible to swap the nuclear ensembles on time scales of seconds and indicate that it might even be possible to fully entangle them. As a key result, it turns out that the larger the baths are, the more useful they become as a resource of quantum information. Interestingly, the nuclear spin dynamics strongly benefits from combining two quantum dots of different geometry to a double dot set up.

Anisotropic photoconductivity in graphene

We investigate the photoconductivity of graphene within the relaxation time approximation. In presence of the inter-band transitions induced by the linearly polarized light the photoconductivity turns out to be highly anisotropic due to the pseudospin selection rule for Dirac-like carriers. The effect can be observed in clean undoped graphene samples and be utilized for light polarization detection.

Dielectric function of the semiconductor hole liquid: Full frequency and wave vector dependence

We study the dielectric function of the homogeneous semiconductor hole liquid of p-doped bulk III-V zinc-blende semiconductors within random phase approximation. The single-particle physics of the hole system is modeled by Luttinger's four-band Hamiltonian in its spherical approximation. Regarding the Coulomb-interacting hole liquid, the full dependence of the zero-temperature dielectric function on wave vector and frequency is explored. The imaginary part of the dielectric function is analytically obtained in terms of complicated but fully elementary expressions, while in the result for the real part nonelementary one-dimensional integrations remain to be performed. The correctness of these two independent calculations is checked via Kramers-Kronig relations. The mass difference between heavy and light holes, along with variations in the background dielectric constant, leads to dramatic alternations in the plasmon excitation pattern, and generically, two plasmon branches can be identified. These findings are the result of the evaluation of the full dielectric function and are not accessible via a high-frequency expansion. In the static limit a beating of Friedel oscillations between the Fermi wave numbers of heavy and light holes occurs.

Pseudospin in optical and transport properties of graphene

We show that the pseudospin being an additional degree of freedom for carriers in graphene can be efficiently controlled by means of the electron-electron interactions which, in turn, can be manipulated by changing the substrate. In particular, an out-of-plane pseudospin component can occur leading to a zero-field Hall current as well as to polarization-sensitive interband optical absorption.

Dynamical current-current susceptibility of gapped graphene

We present analytical expressions for the current-current correlation function in graphene for arbitrary frequency, wave vector, doping, and band gap induced by a mass term. In the static limit we analyze the Landau (orbital) and Pauli magnetization, as well as the Lindhard correction which describes Friedel and RKKY oscillations. In the nonrelativistic limit we compare our results with the situation of the usual two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We find that the orbital magnetic susceptibility (OMS) in gapped graphene is smeared out on an energy scale given by the inverse mass. The nonrelativistic limit of the plasmon dispersion and the Lindhard function reproduces the results of the 2DEG. The same conclusion is true for the Pauli part of the susceptibility. The peculiar band structure of gapped graphene leads to pseudospin paramagnetism and thus to a special form of the OMS.

Entanglement Spectrum and Entanglement Thermodynamics of Quantum Hall Bilayers at nu=1

We study the entanglement spectra of bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor nu=1. In the interlayer-coherent phase at layer separations smaller than a critical value, the entanglement spectra show a striking similarity to the energy spectra of the corresponding monolayer systems around half filling. The transition to the incoherent phase can be followed in terms of low-lying entanglement levels. Finally, we describe the connection between those two types of spectra in terms of an effective temperature leading to relations for the entanglement entropy which are in full analogy to canonical thermodynamics.
