The Point Spectrum Of Periodic Quantum Trees

We study the point spectrum of a periodic quantum tree equipped with a Schr\"odinger type differential operator with delta-type vertex conditions, using subsets of the compact graph that generates the tree. We prove analogs of existing discrete results concerning the eigenvalues of such operators (see Aomoto, 1991 and see Banks, Garza-Vargas and Mukherjee, 2022). In particular, we define the density of states measure and find the measure of eigenvalues of the periodic tree. While most results carry over from the discrete case, a notable difference between the continuum and discrete cases is that a \textbf{regular} quantum periodic tree may have eigenvalues. We prove that after an arbitrarily small adjustment of edge lengths, the point spectrum of the universal cover of a compact quantum graph, with at least one cycle and the standard Schr\"odinger operator, is empty.

Mesoscopic Universality for Circular Orthogonal Polynomial Ensembles

We study mesoscopic fluctuations of orthogonal polynomial ensembles on the unit circle. We show that asymptotics of such fluctuations are stable under decaying perturbations of the recurrence coefficients, where the appropriate decay rate depends on the scale considered. By directly proving Gaussian limits for certain constant coefficient ensembles, we obtain mesoscopic scale Gaussian limits for a large class of orthogonal polynomial ensembles on the unit circle. As a corollary we prove mesocopic central limit theorems (for all mesoscopic scales) for the $\beta=2$ circular Jacobi ensembles with real parameter $\delta>-1/2$.

Spectral Gaps for Jacobi Matrices on Graphs

We study bounds on eigenvalue gaps for finite quotients of periodic Jacobi matrices on trees. We prove an Alon-Boppana type bound for the spectral gap and a comparison result for other eigenvalue gaps.

A Useful Formula for Periodic Jacobi Matrices on Trees

We introduce a function of the density of states for periodic Jacobi matrices on trees and prove a useful formula for it. This allows new, streamlined proofs of the gap labeling and Aomoto index theorems. We prove a version of this new formula for the Anderson model on trees.

Resonances at the Threshold for Pauli Operators in Dimension Two

It is well-known that, due to the interaction between the spin and the magnetic field, the two-dimensional Pauli operator has an eigenvalue $0$ at the threshold of its essential spectrum. We show that when perturbed by an effectively positive perturbation, $V$, coupled with a small parameter $\varepsilon$, these eigenvalues become resonances. Moreover, we derive explicit expressions for the leading terms of their imaginary parts in the limit $\varepsilon\searrow 0$. These show, in particular, that the dependence of the imaginary part of the resonances on $\varepsilon$ is determined by the flux of the magnetic field. The cases of non-degenerate and degenerate zero eigenvalue are treated separately. We also discuss applications of our main results to particles with anomalous magnetic moments.

Periodic Boundary Conditions for Periodic Jacobi Matrices on Trees

We consider matrices on infinite trees which are universal covers of Jacobi matrices on finite graphs. We are interested in the question of the existence of sequences of finite covers whose normalized eigenvalue counting measures converge to the density of states of the operator on the infinite tree. We first of all construct a simple example where this convergence fails and then discuss two ways of constructing the required sequences: with random boundary conditions and through normal subgroups.

On the spacing of zeros of paraorthogonal polynomials for singular measures

We prove a lower bound on the spacing of zeros of paraorthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, based on continuity of the underlying measure as measured by Hausdorff dimensions. We complement this with the analog of the result from arXiv:1011.3159 showing that clock spacing holds even for certain singular continuous measures.

Periodic Jacobi Matrices on Trees

We begin the systematic study of the spectral theory of periodic Jacobi matrices on trees including a formal definition. The most significant result that appears here for the first time is that these operators have no singular continuous spectrum. We review important previous results of Sunada and Aomoto and present several illuminating examples. We present many open problems and conjectures that we hope will stimulate further work.

On the Decomposition of the Laplacian on Metric Graphs

We study the Laplacian on family preserving metric graphs. These are graphs that have a certain symmetry that, as we show, allows for a decomposition into a direct sum of one-dimensional operators whose properties are explicitly related to the structure of the graph. Such decompositions have been extremely useful in the study of Schrödinger operators on metric trees. We show that the tree structure is not essential, and moreover, obtain a direct and simple correspondence between such decompositions in the discrete and continuum case.

Spectral fluctuations for Schrödinger operators with a random decaying potential

We study fluctuations of polynomial linear statistics for discrete Schrödinger operators with a random decaying potential. We describe a decomposition of the space of polynomials into a direct sum of three subspaces determining the growth rate of the variance of the corresponding linear statistic. In particular, each one of these subspaces defines a unique critical value for the decay-rate exponent, above which the random variable has a limit that is sensitive to the underlying distribution and below which the random variable has asymptotically Gaussian fluctuations.

Scaling Limits of Jacobi Matrices and the Christoffel-Darboux Kernel

We study scaling limits of deterministic Jacobi matrices at a fixed point, $x_0$, and their connection to the scaling limits of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel at that point. We show that in the case that the orthogonal polynomials are bounded at $x_0$, a subsequential limit always exists and can be expressed as a canonical system. We further show that under weak conditions on the associated measure, bulk universality of the CD kernel is equivalent to the existence of a limit of a particular explicit form.

On the Essential Spectrum of Schrödinger Operators on Trees

It is known that the essential spectrum of a Schrödinger operator $H$ on $\ell^{2}\left(\mathbb{N}\right)$ is equal to the union of the spectra of right limits of $H$. The natural generalization of this relation to $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ is known to hold as well. In this paper we generalize the notion of right limits to general infinite connected graphs and construct examples of graphs for which the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is strictly bigger than the union of the spectra of its right limits. As these right limits are trees, this result is complemented by the fact that the equality still holds for general bounded operators on regular trees. We prove this and characterize the essential spectrum in the spherically symmetric case.

Large Deviations and the Lukic Conjecture

We use the large deviation approach to sum rules pioneered by Gamboa, Nagel and Rouault to prove higher order sum rules for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In particular, we prove one half of a conjectured sum rule of Lukic in the case of two singular points, one simple and one double. This is important because it is known that the conjecture of Simon fails in exactly this case, so this paper provides support for the idea that Lukic's replacement for Simon's conjecture might be true.

Level repulsion for Schroedinger operators with singular continuous spectrum

We describe a family of half-line continuum Schroedinger operators with purely singular continuous essential spectrum, exhibiting asymptotic strong level repulsion (known as clock behavior). This follows from the convergence of the renormalized continuum Christoffel-Darboux kernel to the sine kernel.

Large Deviations and Sum Rules for Spectral Theory - A Pedagogical Approach

This is a pedagogical exposition of the large deviation approach to sum rules pioneered by Gamboa, Nagel and Rouault. We'll explain how to use their ideas to recover the Szeg}o and Killip{ Simon Theorems. The primary audience is spectral theorists and people working on orthogonal polynomials who have limited familiarity with the theory of large deviations.

Central Limit Theorems for Biorthogonal Ensembles and Asymptotics of Recurrence Coefficients

We study fluctuations of linear statistics corresponding to smooth functions for certain biorthogonal ensembles. We study those biorthogonal ensembles for which the underlying biorthogonal family satisfies a finite term recurrence and describe the asymptotic fluctuations using right limits of the recurrence matrix. As a consequence, we show that whenever the right limit is a Laurent matrix, a Central Limit Theorem holds. We will also discuss the implications for orthogonal polynomial ensembles. In particular, we obtain a Central limit theorem for the orthogonal polynomial ensemble associated with any measure belonging to the Nevai Class of an interval. Our results also extend previous results on Unitary Ensembles in the one-cut case. Finally, we will illustrate our results by deriving Central Limit Theorems for the Hahn ensemble for lozenge tilings of a hexagon and for the Hermitian two matrix model.

Stability of Asymptotics of Christoffel-Darboux Kernels

We study the stability of convergence of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel, associated with a compactly supported measure, to the sine kernel, under perturbations of the Jacobi coefficients of the measure. We prove stability under variations of the boundary conditions and stability in a weak sense under $\ell^1$ and random $\ell^2$ diagonal perturbations. We also show that convergence to the sine kernel at $x$ implies that $μ(\{x\})=0$.

The Nevai condition and a local law of large numbers for orthogonal polynomial ensembles

We consider asymptotics of orthogonal polynomial ensembles, in the macroscopic and mesoscopic scales. We prove both global and local laws of large numbers (analogous to the recently proven local semicircle law for Wigner matrices) under fairly weak conditions on the underlying measure $μ$. Our main tools are a general concentration inequality for determinantal point processes with a kernel that is a self-adjoint projection, and a strengthening of the Nevai condition from the theory of orthogonal polynomials.
