Nonintersecting paths with a staircase initial condition

We consider an ensemble of $N$ discrete nonintersecting paths starting from equidistant points and ending at consecutive integers. Our first result is an explicit formula for the correlation kernel that allows us to analyze the process as $N\to \infty$. In that limit we obtain a new general class of kernels describing the local correlations close to the equidistant starting points. As the distance between the starting points goes to infinity, the correlation kernel converges to that of a single random walker. As the distance to the starting line increases, however, the local correlations converge to the sine kernel. Thus, this class interpolates between the sine kernel and an ensemble of independent particles. We also compute the scaled simultaneous limit, with both the distance between particles and the distance to the starting line going to infinity, and obtain a process with number variance saturation, previously studied by Johansson.

Spectral Analysis of Certain Spherically Homogeneous Graphs

We study operators on rooted graphs with a certain spherical homogeneity. These graphs are called path commuting and allow for a decomposition of the adjacency matrix and the Laplacian into a direct sum of Jacobi matrices which reflect the structure of the graph. Thus, the spectral properties of the adjacency matrix and the Laplacian can be analyzed by means of the elaborated theory of Jacobi matrices. For some examples which include antitrees, we derive the decomposition explicitly and present a zoo of spectral behavior induced by the geometry of the graph. In particular, these examples show that spectral types are not at all stable under rough isometries.

Sine kernel asymptotics for a class of singular measures

We construct a family of measures on $\bbR$ that are purely singular with respect to Lebesgue measure, and yet exhibit universal sine-kernel asymptotics in the bulk. The measures are best described via their Jacobi recursion coefficients: these are sparse perturbations of the recursion coefficients corresponding to Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. We prove convergence of the renormalized Christoffel-Darboux kernel to the sine kernel for any sufficiently sparse decaying perturbation.

Natural Boundaries and Spectral Theory

We present and exploit an analogy between lack of absolutely continuous spectrum for Schroedinger operators and natural boundaries for power series. Among our new results are generalizations of Hecke's example and natural boundary examples for random power series where independence is not assumed.

Equality of the Spectral and Dynamical Definitions of Reflection

For full-line Jacobi matrices, Schrödinger operators, and CMV matrices, we show that being reflectionless, in the sense of the well-known property of $m$-functions, is equivalent to a lack of reflection in the dynamics in the sense that any state that goes entirely to $x=-\infty$ as $t\to -\infty $ goes entirely to $x=\infty$ as $t\to\infty$. This allows us to settle a conjecture of Deift and Simon from 1983 regarding ergodic Jacobi matrices.

Right limits and reflectionless measures for CMV matrices

We study CMV matrices by focusing on their right-limit sets. We prove a CMV version of a recent result of Remling dealing with the implications of the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum, and we study some of its consequences. We further demonstrate the usefulness of right limits in the study of weak asymptotic convergence of spectral measures and ratio asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials by extending and refining earlier results of Khrushchev. To demonstrate the analogy with the Jacobi case, we recover corresponding previous results of Simon using the same approach.

The Nevai Condition

We study Nevai's condition that for orthogonal polynomials on the real line, $K_n(x,x_0)^2 K_n(x_0,x_0)^{-1} dρ(x)\toδ_{x_0}$ where $K_n$ is the CD kernel. We prove that it holds for the Nevai class of a finite gap set uniformly on the spectrum and we provide an example of a regular measure on $[-2,2]$ where it fails on an interval.

Spectral and Dynamical Properties of Certain Random Jacobi Matrices with Growing Parameters

In this paper, a family of random Jacobi matrices, with off-diagonal terms that exhibit power-law growth, is studied. Since the growth of the randomness is slower than that of these terms, it is possible to use methods applied in the study of Schrödinger operators with random decaying potentials. A particular result of the analysis is the existence of operators with arbitrarily fast transport whose spectral measure is zero dimensional. The results are applied to the infinite Gaussian $β$ Ensembles and their spectral properties are analyzed.

Singular spectrum for radial trees

We prove several results showing that absolutely continuous spectrum for the Laplacian on radial trees is a rare event. In particular, we show that metric trees with unbounded edges have purely singular spectrum and that generically (in the sense of Baire) radial trees have purely singular continuous spectrum.

Random discrete Schrödinger operators from Random Matrix Theory

We investigate random, discrete Schrödiner operators which arise naturally in the theory of random matrices, and depend parametrically on Dyson's Coulomb gas inverse temperature $β$. They belong to the class of "critical" random Schrödiner operators with random potentials which diminish as $|x|^{-{1/2}}$. We show that as a function of $β$ their eigenstates undergo a transition from extended ($β\ge 2 $) to power-law localized ($0 < β< 2$).

Singular Continuous and Dense Point Spectrum for Sparse Trees with Finite Dimensions

Sparse trees are trees with sparse branchings. The Laplacian on some of these trees can be shown to have singular spectral measures. We focus on a simple family of sparse trees for which the dimensions can be naturally defined and shown to be finite. Generically, this family has singular spectral measures and eigenvalues that are dense in some interval.

Singular Continuous Spectrum for the Laplacian on Certain Sparse Trees

We present examples of rooted tree graphs for which the Laplacian has singular continuous spectral measures. For some of these examples we further establish fractional Hausdorff dimensions. The singular continuous components, in these models, have an interesting multiplicity structure. The results are obtained via a decomposition of the Laplacian into a direct sum of Jacobi matrices.
