Tetra- and penta-quark structures in the constituent quark model

With the development of high energy physics experiments, a large amount of exotic states in the hadronic sector have been observed. In order to shed some insights on the nature of the tetraquark and pentaquark candidates, a constituent quark model, along with the gaussian expansion method, has been employed systematically in the real- and complex-range investigations. We review herein the double- and full-heavy tetraquarks, but also the hidden-charm, -bottom and doubly charmed pentaquarks. Several experimentally observed exotic hadrons are well reproduced within our approach; moreover, their possible compositeness are suggested and other properties analyzed accordingly such as their decay widths and general patterns in the spectrum. Besides, we report also some predictions not yet seen by experiment within the studied tetraquark and pentaquark sectors.

$QQ\bar{s}\bar{s}$ tetraquarks in the chiral quark model

The low-lying $S$-wave $QQ\bar{s}\bar{s}$ ($Q=c, b$) tetraquark states with $IJ^P=00^+$, $01^+$ and $02^+$ are systematically investigated in the framework of complex scaling range of chiral quark model. Every structure including meson-meson, diquark-antidiquark and K-type configurations, and all possible color channels in four-body sector are considered by means of a commonly extended variational approach, Gaussian expansion method. Several narrow and wide resonance states are obtained for $cc\bar{s}\bar{s}$ and $bb\bar{s}\bar{s}$ tetraquarks with $IJ^P=00^+$ and $02^+$. Meanwhile, narrow resonances for $cb\bar{s}\bar{s}$ tetraquarks are also found in $IJ^P=00^+$, $01^+$ and $02^+$ states. These results confirm the possibility of finding hadronic molecules with masses $\sim\,0.6\,\text{GeV}$ above the noninteracting hadron-hadron thresholds.

Nucleon elastic form factors at accessible large spacelike momenta

A Poincaré-covariant quark+diquark Faddeev equation is used to compute nucleon elastic form factors on $0\leq Q^2\leq 18 \,m_N^2$ ($m_N$ is the nucleon mass) and elucidate their role as probes of emergent hadronic mass in the Standard Model. The calculations expose features of the form factors that can be tested in new generation experiments at existing facilities, e.g. a zero in $G_E^p/G_M^p$; a maximum in $G_E^n/G_M^n$; and a zero in the proton's $d$-quark Dirac form factor, $F_1^d$. Additionally, examination of the associated light-front-transverse number and anomalous magnetisation densities reveals, inter alia: a marked excess of valence $u$-quarks in the neighbourhood of the proton's centre of transverse momentum; and that the valence $d$-quark is markedly more active magnetically than either of the valence $u$-quarks. The calculations and analysis also reveal other aspects of nucleon structure that could be tested with a high-luminosity accelerator capable of delivering higher beam energies than are currently available.

Doubly Charmed Pentaquarks

The LHCb Collaboration, using its full data set from runs $1$ and $2$, announced in $2019$ a surprising update of the hidden-charm pentaquark states $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$, observed in 2015. A new state, $P_c(4312)^+$, was clearly seen at lower energies; furthermore, the original $P_c(4450)$ resonance was resolved into two individual states, named the $P_c(4440)^+$ and the $P_c(4457)^+$. Motivated by the fact that these new hidden-charm pentaquark states were successfully predicted by our chiral quark model, we extend herein such study to the doubly charmed sector. The analyzed total spin and parity quantum numbers are $J^P=\frac12^-$, $\frac32^-$ and $\frac52^-$, in the $I=\frac12$ and $\frac32$ isospin channels. We find several possible narrow baryon-meson resonances (theoretical masses in parenthesis): $IJ^P = \frac12 \frac12^-$ $Σ_c D(4356)$, $\frac12 \frac32^-$ $Σ^*_c D(4449)$, $\frac32 \frac12^-$ $Σ_c D(4431)$, $\frac32 \frac12^-$ $Σ_c D(4446)$, $\frac32 \frac32^-$ $Σ_c D^*(4514)$ and $\frac32 \frac52^-$ $Ξ^*_{cc} ρ(4461)$ whose widths are $4.8$, $8.0$, $2.6$, $2.2$, $4.0$ and $3.0\,\text{MeV}$, respectively. Moreover, one shallow bound-state is found, too, with quantum numbers $IJ^P = \frac12 \frac32^-$ $Ξ^*_{cc} π(3757)$. These doubly charmed pentaquark states are expected to be identified in future experiments.

Spectroscopy of $\mathbf{B_c}$ mesons and the possibility of finding exotic $\mathbf{B_c}$-like structures

The bottom-charmed ($B_c$) mesons are more stable than their charmonium ($c\bar c$) and bottomium ($b\bar b$) partners because they cannot annihilate into gluons. However, the low production cross-sections and signal-to-background ratios avoided until now their clear identification. The recent experimental results reported by CMS and LHCb at CERN open the possibility of having a $B_c$ spectrum as complete as the ones of charmonium and bottomonium. Motivated by this expectation, we compute bottom-charmed meson masses in the region energies in which decay meson-meson thresholds are opened, looking for the analogs to the $X(3872)$ in the $B_c$ spectroscopy. We use a constituent quark model in which quark-antiquark degrees of freedom are complemented by four-body Fock states configurations. The model has been applied to a wide range of hadronic observables, in particular to the $X(3872)$, and thus the model parameters are completely constrained. No extra states are found in the $J^P=0^+$ and $J^P=1^+$ sectors. However, in the $J^P=2^+$ sector we found an additional state very close to the $D^*B^*$ threshold which could be experimentally detected.

QCD spin effects in the heavy hybrid potentials and spectra

The spin-dependent operators for heavy quarkonium hybrids have been recently obtained in a nonrelativistic effective field theory approach up to next-to-leading order in the heavy-quark mass expansion. In the effective field theory for hybrids several operators not found in standard quarkonia appear, including an operator suppressed by only one power of the heavy-quark mass. We compute the matching coefficients for these operators in the short heavy-quark-antiquark distance regime, $r\ll 1/Λ_{\rm QCD}$, by matching weakly-coupled potential NRQCD to the effective field theory for hybrids. In this regime the perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients factorize, and the latter can be expressed in terms of purely gluonic correlators whose form we explicitly calculate with the aid of the transformation properties of the gluon fields under discrete symmetries. We detail our previous comparison with direct lattice computations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum, from which the unknown nonperturbative contributions can be obtained, and extend it to data sets with different light-quark masses.

Spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids

A unique feature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions, is the possibility for gluonic degrees of freedom to participate in the construction of physical hadrons, which are color singlets, in an analogous manner to valence quarks. Hadrons with no valence quarks are called glueballs, while hadrons where both gluons and valence quarks combine to form a color singlet are called hybrids. The unambiguous identification of such states among the experimental hadron spectrum has been thus far not possible. Glueballs are particularly difficult to establish experimentally since the lowest lying ones are expected to strongly mix with conventional mesons. On the other hand, hybrids should be easier to single out because the set of quantum numbers available to their lowest excitations may be exotic, i.e., not realized in conventional quark-antiquark systems. Particularly promising for discovery appear to be heavy hybrids, which are made of gluons and a heavy-quark-antiquark pair (charm or bottom). In the heavy-quark sector systematic tools can be used that are not available in the light-quark sector. In this paper we use a nonrelativistic effective field theory to uncover for the first time the full spin structure of heavy-quark hybrids up to $1/m^2$-terms in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We show that such terms display novel characteristics at variance with our consolidated experience on the fine and hyperfine splittings in atomic, molecular and nuclear physics. We determine the nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients of the effective field theory by fitting our results to lattice-QCD determinations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum and extrapolate the results to the bottomonium hybrid sector where lattice-QCD determinations are still challenging.

Effective charge from lattice QCD

Using lattice configurations for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) generated with three domain-wall fermions at a physical pion mass, we obtain a parameter-free prediction of QCD's renormalisation-group-invariant process-independent effective charge, $\hatα(k^2)$. Owing to the dynamical breaking of scale invariance, evident in the emergence of a gluon mass-scale, this coupling saturates at infrared momenta: $\hatα(0)/π=0.97(4)$. Amongst other things: $\hatα(k^2)$ is almost identical to the process-dependent (PD) effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule; and also that PD charge which, employed in the one-loop evolution equations, delivers agreement between pion parton distribution functions computed at the hadronic scale and experiment. The diversity of unifying roles played by $\hatα(k^2)$ suggests that it is a strong candidate for that object which represents the interaction strength in QCD at any given momentum scale; and its properties support a conclusion that QCD is a mathematically well-defined quantum field theory in four dimensions.

Doubly-heavy tetraquarks

In the framework of the chiral quark model along with complex scaling range, we perform a dynamical study on the low-lying $S$-wave doubly-heavy tetraquark states ($QQ\bar{q}\bar{q}$, $Q=c, b$ and $q=u, d$) with an accurate computing approach, Gaussian expansion method. The meson-meson and diquark-antidiquark configurations within all possible color structures for spin-parity quantum numbers $J^P=0^+$, $1^+$ and $2^+$, and in the $0$ and $1$ isospin sectors are considered. Possible tightly bound and narrow resonance states are obtained for doubly-charm and doubly-bottom tetraquarks with $IJ^P=01^+$, and these exotic states are also obtained in charm-bottom tetraquarks with $00^+$ and $01^+$ quantum numbers. Only loosely bound state is found in charm-bottom tetraquarks of $02^+$ states. All of these bound states within meson-meson configurations are loosely bound whether in color-singlet channels or coupling to hidden-color ones. However compact structures are available in diquark-antidiquark channels except for charm-bottom tetraquarks in $02^+$ states.

The charged $Z_c$ and $Z_b$ structures in a constituent quark model approach

The nature of the recently discovered $Z_c$ and $Z_b$ structures is intriguing. Their charge forces its minimal quark content to be $Q\bar Q q\bar q$ (where $Q=\{c,b\}$ and $q=\{u,d\}$). In this work we perform a molecular coupled-channels calculation of the $I^G(J^{PC})=1^+(1^{+-})$ charm and bottom sectors in the framework of a constituent quark model which satisfactorily describes a wide range of properties of (non-)conventional hadrons containing heavy quarks. All the relevant channels are included for each sector, i.e.: The $D^{(\ast)}\bar D^{\ast}+h.c.$, $πJ/ψ$ and $ρη_c$ channels for the $Z_c$ and $B^{(\ast)}B^{\ast}$ and $Υ(nS)π$ ($n=1,2,3$) channels for the $Z_b$ analysis. Possible structures of these resonances will be discussed.

Form factors for the Nucleon-to-Roper electromagnetic transition at large-$Q^2$

We report on a recent calculation of all Roper-related electromagnetic transtions form factors, covering the range of energies that next-to-come planned experiments are expected to map. Direct reliable calculations were performed, within a Poincaré covariant approach of the three-body bound-state problem, up to $Q^2/m^2_N$=6; approximated then by applying the Schlessinger point method and the results eventually extended up to $Q^2/m^2_N\simeq$12 via analytic continuation.

Triply-heavy baryons in a constituent quark model

A constituent quark model, which has recently been successfully applied to the study of heavy quarkonium properties such as its spectrum but also a diverse array of observables related with their electromagnetic, strong and weak decays and reactions, is used herein to compute ground- and excited-state masses of $QQQ$-baryons containing either $c$- or $b$-quarks. Considering the lack of experimental information about the spectra of triply-heavy baryons, we believe that our computation could help on finding new states, since it is expected that phenomenological quark models describe triply-heavy baryons to a similar degree of accuracy as heavy quarkonia. The quark model parameters previously used to describe $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ properties have not been modified for this analysis. The non-relativistic three-body bound-state problem is solved by means of the Gaußian expansion method which provides enough accuracy and simplifies the subsequent evaluation of the matrix elements. Several low-lying states with quantum numbers $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^{\pm}$, $\frac{3}{2}^{\pm}$, $\frac{5}{2}^{\pm}$ and $\frac{7}{2}^+$ are reported. We compare our results with those predicted by many other theoretical formalisms. There is a general trend of agreement about the mass of the ground state in each sector of triply-heavy baryons; however, the situation is more puzzling for the excited states and thus appropriate comments on the most relevant features of our comparison are given.

Pion and Kaon Structure at the Electron-Ion Collider

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1 GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton in QCD; discuss the special role of the kaon, which lies near the boundary between dominance of strong and Higgs mass-generation mechanisms; and explain the need for a coherent effort in QCD phenomenology and continuum calculations, in exa-scale computing as provided by lattice QCD, and in experiments to make progress in understanding the origins of hadron masses and the distribution of that mass within them. We compare the unique capabilities foreseen at the electron-ion collider (EIC) with those at the hadron-electron ring accelerator (HERA), the only previous electron-proton collider; and describe five key experimental measurements, enabled by the EIC and aimed at delivering fundamental insights that will generate concrete answers to the questions of how mass and structure arise in the pion and kaon, the Standard Model's NG modes, whose surprisingly low mass is critical to the evolution of our Universe.

Spectrum and structure of octet and decuplet baryons and their positive-parity excitations

A continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory, employing parametrisations of the necessary kernel elements, is used to compute the spectrum and Poincaré-covariant wave functions for all flavour-$SU(3)$ octet and decuplet baryons and their first positive-parity excitations. Such analyses predict the existence of nonpointlike, dynamical quark-quark (diquark) correlations within all baryons; and a uniformly sound description of the systems studied is obtained by retaining flavour-antitriplet--scalar and flavour-sextet--pseudovector diquarks. Thus constituted, the rest-frame wave function of every system studied is primarily $S$-wave in character; and the first positive-parity excitation of each octet or decuplet baryon exhibits the characteristics of a radial excitation. Importantly, every ground-state octet and decuplet baryon possesses a radial excitation. Hence, the analysis predicts the existence of positive-parity excitations of the $Ξ$, $Ξ^\ast$, $Ω$ baryons, with masses, respectively (in GeV): 1.84(08), 1.89(04), 2.05(02). These states have not yet been empirically identified. This body of analysis suggests that the expression of emergent mass generation is the same in all $u$, $d$, $s$ baryons and, notably, that dynamical quark-quark correlations play an essential role in the structure of each one. It also provides the basis for developing an array of predictions that can be tested in new generation experiments.

Electric dipole transitions of $1P$ bottomonia

We compute the electric dipole transitions $χ_{bJ}(1P)\to γΥ(1S)$, with $J=0,1,2$, and $h_{b}(1P)\to γη_{b}(1S)$ in a model-independent way. We use potential non-relativistic QCD (pNRQCD) at weak coupling with either the Coulomb potential or the complete static potential incorporated in the leading order Hamiltonian. In the last case, the perturbative series shows very mild scale dependence and a good convergence pattern, allowing predictions for all the transition widths. Assuming $Λ_{\text{QCD}} \ll mv^2$, the precision that we reach is $k_γ^{3}/(mv)^{2} \times \mathcal{O}(v^{2})$, where $k_γ$ is the photon energy, $m$ is the mass of the heavy quark and $v$ its relative velocity. Our results are: $Γ(χ_{b0}(1P)\to γΥ(1S)) = 28^{+2}_{-2}~\text{keV}$, $Γ(χ_{b1}(1P)\to γΥ(1S)) = 37^{+2}_{-2}~\text{keV}$, $Γ(χ_{b2}(1P)\to γΥ(1S)) = 45^{+3}_{-3}~\text{keV}$ and $Γ(h_b(1P)\to γη_b(1S)) = 63^{+6}_{-6}~\text{keV}$.

Structure of the nucleon and its first radial excitation

A Poincaré-covariant continuum approach to the three valence-quark bound-state problem in quantum field theory is used to perform a detailed analysis of the nucleon's ground and first excited states: the so-called $N(940)\frac{1}{2}^+$ and $N(1440)\frac{1}{2}^+$. Such analysis predicts the presence of nonpointlike, fully-interacting quark-quark (diquark) correlations within them, being the isoscalar-scalar and isovector-pseudovector diquarks overwhelmingly dominant with similar relative strengths in both states. Moreover, the rest-frame wave functions of both states are largely $S$-wave in nature and the first excited state in this $1/2^+$ channel has the appearance of a radial excitation of the ground state. All these features have numerous observable consequences, we show herein those related with the nucleon's elastic, Roper's elastic and nucleon-to-Roper transition electromagnetic form factors, for both charged and neutral channels.

Transition form factors: $γ^\ast + p \to Δ(1232)$, $Δ(1600)$

Electroproduction form factors describing the $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1232), Δ^+(1600)$ transitions are computed using a fully-dynamical diquark-quark approximation to the Poincaré-covariant three-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory. In this approach, the $Δ(1600)$ is an analogue of the Roper resonance in the nucleon sector, appearing as the simplest radial excitation of the $Δ(1232)$. Precise measurements of the $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1232)$ transition already exist on $0 \leq Q^2 \lesssim 8\,$GeV$^2$ and the calculated results compare favourably with the data outside the meson-cloud domain. The predictions for the $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1600)$ magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole transition form factors are consistent with the empirical values at the real photon point, and extend to $Q^2 \approx 6 m_p^2$, enabling a meaningful direct comparison with experiment once analysis of existing data is completed. In both cases, the electric quadrupole form factor is particularly sensitive to deformation of the $Δ$-baryons. Interestingly, whilst the $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1232)$ transition form factors are larger in magnitude than those for $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1600)$ in some neighbourhood of the real photon point, this ordering is reversed on $Q^2 \gtrsim 2 m_p^2$, suggesting that the $γ^\ast p \to Δ^+(1600)$ transition is more localised in configuration space.

Masses of ground-state mesons and baryons, including those with heavy quarks

Using a confining, symmetry-preserving regularisation of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction, we compute the spectra of ground-state pseudoscalar and vector $(f\bar g)$ mesons, scalar and axial-vector $(fg)$ diquarks, and $J^P=1/2^+, 3/2^+$ $(fgh)$ baryons, where $f,g,h \in \{u,d,s,c,b\}$. The diquark correlations are essentially dynamical and play a key role in formulating and solving the three-valence-quark baryon problems. The baryon spectrum obtained from this largely-algebraic approach reproduces the 22 known experimental masses with an accuracy of $2.9(2.4)$%. It also possesses the richness of states typical of constituent-quark models, predicting many heavy-quark baryons not yet observed. This study indicates that diquark correlations are an important component of all baryons; and owing to the dynamical character of the diquarks, it is typically the lightest allowed diquark correlation which defines the most important component of a baryon's Faddeev amplitude.
