Stellar collisions in globular clusters: Constraints on the initial mass function of the first generation of stars

Globular clusters display an anticorrelation between the fraction of the first generation of stars ($N({\rm G1})/N({\rm tot})$) and the slope of the present-day mass function of the clusters ($α_{pd}$), which is particularly significant for massive clusters. In the framework of the binary-mediated collision scenario for the formation of the second-generation stars in globular clusters, we test the effect of a varying stellar initial mass function (IMF) of the G1 stars on the $(N({\rm G1})/N({\rm tot}))-α_{pd}$ anticorrelation. We use a simple collision model that has only two input parameters, the shape of the IMF of G1 stars and the fraction of G1 stars that coalesce to form second-generation stars. We show that a variable efficiency of the collision process is necessary in order to explain the $(N({\rm G1})/N({\rm tot}))-α_{pd}$ anticorrelation; however, the scatter in the anticorrelation can only be explained by variations in the IMF, and in particular by variations in the slope in the mass interval $\approx$ (0.1-0.5) M$_{\odot}$. Our results indicate that in order to explain the scatter in the $(N({\rm G1})/N({\rm tot}))-α_{pd}$ relation, it is necessary to invoke variations in the slope in this mass range between $\approx -0.9$ and $\approx -1.9$. Interpreted in terms of a Kroupa-like broken power law, this translates into variations in the mean mass of between $\approx 0.2$ and $0.55$ M$_{\odot}$. This level of variation is consistent with what is observed for young stellar clusters in the Milky Way and may reflect variations in the physical conditions of the globular cluster progenitor clouds at the time the G1 population formed or may indicate the occurrence of collisions between protostellar embryos before stars settle on the main sequence.

Brane cosmology with variable tension

We study brane-world models and demonstrate that such models do not admit self-similar solutions through the matter collineation approach. By introducing the hypothesis of variable brane tension, $λ,$ we outline the new effective field equation (EFE) in the most simple case (symmetric embedding) under the assumption that the fundamental constants in 5D are constants. In this case, we find the exact form that each physical quantity may take in order that the EFE become invariant under scale transformations. By taking into account such assumptions, we find that in 4D, the gravitational constant $κ^{2}\thicksimλ$ while the cosmological constant $Λ\thicksimλ^{2}$ are always decreasing. These results are quite general and valid for any homogeneous self-similar metric. Nevertheless, the study of the EFE under scale symmetries suggests that $ρ\thicksimλ$ (as a functional relationship). This allows to get a growing $κ^{2}$ but, in this case, the fundamental constants in 5D must vary as well. We outline a toy model allowing such a possibility.

Self-similar cosmological solutions in f(R,T) gravity theory

We study the $f(R,T)$ cosmological models under the self-similarity hypothesis. We determine the exact form that each physical and geometrical quantity may take in order that the Field Equations (FE) admit exact self-similar solutions through the matter collineation approach. We study two models: the case$\ f(R,T)=f_{1}(R)+f_{2}(T)$ and the case $f(R,T)=f_{1}(R)+f_{2} (R)f_{3}(T)$. In each case, we state general theorems which determine completely the form of the unknown functions $f_{i}$ such that the field equations admit self-similar solutions. We also state some corollaries as limiting cases. These results are quite general and valid for any homogeneous self-similar metric$.$ In this way, we are able to generate new cosmological scenarios. As examples, we study two cases by finding exact solutions to these particular models.

Reconstruction and exact solutions for cosmological perturbations from a generalized gravity theory

Scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations during an inflationary universe scenario in the context of the a generalized gravity theory are studied. This analyze is carried out considering an ansatz on the variables associated to scalar and tensor perturbation ($z_s$ and $z_t$) in the Jordan frame. In this context, we analyze two different Ansatze for the ratio $z_s/z_t$, and we study in great detail the analytical and exact solutions for the cosmological perturbations together with the corresponding reconstruction of the background variables. Recent observational data from the Planck 2018 results are employed to constrain the parameters of each of the models.

(An)Isotropic models in scalar and scalar-tensor cosmologies

We study how the constants $G$ and $Λ$ may vary in different theoretical models (general relativity with a perfect fluid, scalar cosmological models (\textquotedblleft quintessence\textquotedblright) with and without interacting scalar and matter fields and a scalar-tensor model with a dynamical $Λ$) in order to explain some observational results. We apply the program outlined in section II to study three different geometries which generalize the FRW ones, which are Bianchi \textrm{V}, \textrm{VII}$_{0}$ and \textrm{IX}, under the self-similarity hypothesis. We put special emphasis on calculating exact power-law solutions which allow us to compare the different models. In all the studied cases we arrive to the conclusion that the solutions are isotropic and noninflationary while the cosmological constant behaves as a positive decreasing time function (in agreement with the current observations) and the gravitational constant behaves as a growing time function.

Bianchi VI_0&III models. Self-similar approach

We study several cosmological models with Bianchi VI_0&III symmetries under the self-similar approach. We find new solutions for the "classical" perfect fluid model as well as for the vacuum model although they are really restrictive for the equation of state. We also study a perfect fluid model with time-varying constants, $G$ and $Λ.$ As in other models studied we find that the behaviour of $G$ and $Λ$ are related. If $G$ behaves as a growing time function then $Λ$ is a positive decreasing time function but if $G$ is decreasing then $Λ_{0}$ is negative. We end by studying a massive cosmic string model, putting special emphasis on calculating the numerical values of the equations of state. We show that there is no SS solution for a string model with time-varying constants.

Massive cosmic strings in Bianchi type II

We study a massive cosmic strings with BII symmetries cosmological models in two contexts. The first of them is the standard one with a barotropic equation of state. In the second one we explore the possibility of taking into account variable \textquotedblleft constants\textquotedblright ($G$ and $Λ).$Both models are studied under the self-similar hypothesis. We put special emphasis in calculating the numerical values for the equations of state. We find that for $ω\in(0,1]$, $G$, is a growing time function while $Λ$, behaves as positive decreasing time function. If $ω=0,$ both \textquotedblleft constants\textquotedblright, $G$ and $Λ,$ behave as true constants.

Bianchi II with time varying constants. Self-similar approach

We study a perfect fluid Bianchi II models with time varying constants under the self-similarity approach. In the first of the studied model, we consider that only vary $G$ and $Λ.$ The obtained solution is more general that the obtained one for the classical solution since it is valid for an equation of state $ω\in(-1,\infty) $ while in the classical solution $ω\in(-1/3,1) .$ Taking into account the current observations, we conclude that $G$ must be a growing time function while $Λ$ is a positive decreasing function. In the second of the studied models we consider a variable speed of light (VSL). We obtain a similar solution as in the first model arriving to the conclusions that $c$ must be a growing time function if $Λ$ is a positive decreasing function.

Bianchi I with variable $G$ and $Λ$. Self-Similar approach

In this paper we study how to attack under the self-similarity hypothesis a perfect fluid Bianchi I model with variable $G,$and $Λ,$ but under the condition $\operatorname{div}T\neq0.$ We arrive to the conclusion that: $G$ and $Λ$ are decreasing time functions (the sing of $Λ$ depends on the equation of state), while the exponents of the scale factor must satisfy the conditions $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}=1$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}^{2}<1,$ $\forallω\in(-1,1) ,$ relaxing in this way the Kasner conditions. We also show the connection between the behavior of $G$ and the Weyl tensor.

About Bianchi I with VSL

In this paper we study how to attack, through different techniques, a perfect fluid Bianchi I model with variable G,c and Lambda, but taking into account the effects of a $c$-variable into the curvature tensor. We study the model under the assumption,div(T)=0. These tactics are: Lie groups method (LM), imposing a particular symmetry, self-similarity (SS), matter collineations (MC) and kinematical self-similarity (KSS). We compare both tactics since they are quite similar (symmetry principles). We arrive to the conclusion that the LM is too restrictive and brings us to get only the flat FRW solution. The SS, MC and KSS approaches bring us to obtain all the quantities depending on \int c(t)dt. Therefore, in order to study their behavior we impose some physical restrictions like for example the condition q<0 (accelerating universe). In this way we find that $c$ is a growing time function and Lambda is a decreasing time function whose sing depends on the equation of state, w, while the exponents of the scale factor must satisfy the conditions $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}=1$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}^{2}<1,$ $\forallω$, i.e. for all equation of state$,$ relaxing in this way the Kasner conditions. The behavior of $G$ depends on two parameters, the equation of state $ω$ and $ε,$ a parameter that controls the behavior of $c(t),$ therefore $G$ may be growing or decreasing. We also show that through the Lie method, there is no difference between to study the field equations under the assumption of a $c-$var affecting to the curvature tensor which the other one where it is not considered such effects.Nevertheless, it is essential to consider such effects in the cases studied under the SS, MC, and KSS hypotheses.

The SS, MC and KSS approaches bring us to obtain the following solution: G is a decreasing time function and $Λ\thickapprox t^{-2}$, with $Λ<0$, while the exponents of the scale factor must satisfy the conditions $\sum_{i=1}% ^{3}α_{i}=1$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}^{2}<1,$ $\forallω\in(-1,1)$, relaxing in this way the Kasner conditions.

Ordinary Differential Equations through Dimensional Analysis

In in this paper we show how using D.A. it is found a simple change of variables (c.v.) that brings us to obtain differential equations simpler than the original one. In a pedagogical way (at least we try to do that) and in order to make see that each c.v. corresponds to an invariant solution (induced by a symmetry) or a particular solution, we compare (with all the tedious details, i.e. calculations) the proposed method with the Lie method. The method is checked even in ODEs that do not admit symmetries.

An excuse for revising a theory of time-varying "constants"

In this paper we compare the dimensional method with the Lie groups tactic in order to show the limitations and advantages of each technique. For this purpose we study in detail a perfect fluid cosmological model with time-varying "constants" by using dimensional analysis and the symmetry method. We revise our previous conclusion about the variation of the fine structure constant finding for example that in the radiation predominance era if $α$ varies is only due to the variation of $e^{2}ε_{0}^{-1}$ since $c\hbar=const$ in this era.

Cosmological Models with Variable Constants.Their Solution Through Similarity Methods

In this work we compile a few differential equations (ODEs) that arise from the relativistic equations in cosmological models that consider the ``constants'' as scalars functions dependent on time and they are described as perfect as well as viscous fluids. The general idea of the paper is to show how to solve the equations of the models through dimensional techniques (self-similarity). The results are compared with those obtained by other authors and new solutions are introduced.

A Theory of time-varying Constants

We present a flat (K=0) cosmological model, described by a perfect fluid with the ``constants'' $G,c$ and $Λ$ varying with cosmological time $t$. We introduce Planckś ``constant'' $\hbar$ in the field equations through the equation of state for the energy density of radiation. We then determine the behaviour of the ``constants'' by using the zero divergence of the second member of the modified Einsteinś field equations i.e. $div(\frac{G}{c^{4}}T_{i}^{j}+δ_{i}^{j}Λ)=0,$ together with the equation of state and the Einstein cosmological equations. Assuming realistic physical and mathematical conditions we obtain a consistent result with $\hbar c=constant$. In this way we obtain gauge invariance for the Schrödinger equation and the behaviour of the remaining ``constants''

Wheeler-DeWitt Equation with Variable Constants

In this paper we study how all the physical "constants" vary in the framework described by a model in which we have taken into account the generalize conservation principle for its stress-energy tensor. This possibility enable us to take into account the adiabatic matter creation in order to get rid of the entropy problem. We try to generalize this situation by contemplating multi-fluid components. To validate all the obtained results we explore the possibility of considering the variation of the"constants" in the quantum cosmological scenario described by the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. For this purpose we explore the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in different contexts but from a dimensional point of view. We end by presenting the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in the case of considering all the constants varying. The quantum potential is obtained and the tunneling probability is studied.

Full Causal Bulk Viscous Cosmologies with time-varying Constants

We study the evolution of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe, filled with a bulk viscous cosmological fluid, in the presence of time varying ``constants''. The dimensional analysis of the model suggests a proportionality between the bulk viscous pressure of the dissipative fluid and the energy density. On using this assumption and with the choice of the standard equations of state for the bulk viscosity coefficient, temperature and relaxation time, the general solution of the field equations can be obtained, with all physical parameters having a power-law time dependence. The symmetry analysis of this model, performed by using Lie group techniques, confirms the unicity of the solution for this functional form of the bulk viscous pressure. In order to find another possible solution we relax the hypotheses assuming a concrete functional dependence for the ``constants''.

Perfect Fluid Cosmological Models with time-varying Constants

In this paper, we study in detail a perfect fluid cosmological model with time-varying "constants" using dimensional analysis and the symmetry method. We examine the case of variable "constants" in detail without considering the perfect fluid model as a limiting case of a model with a causal bulk viscous fluid as discussed in a recent paper. We obtain some new solutions through the Lie method and show that when matter creation is considered, these solutions are physically relevant.
