Characterizations of Lyapunov domains in terms of Riesz transforms and the Plemelj-Privalov theorem

We prove several characterizations of $\mathscr{C}^{1,ω}$-domains (aka Lyapunov domains), where $ω$ is a growth function satisfying natural assumptions. For example, given an Ahlfors regular domain $Ω\subseteq{\mathbb{R}}^n$, we show that the modulus of continuity of the geometric measure theoretic outward unit normal $ν$ to $Ω$ is dominated by (a multiple of) $ω$ if and only if the action of each Riesz transform $R_j$ associated with $\partialΩ$ on the constant function $1$ has a modulus of continuity dominated by (a multiple of) $ω$. The proof of this result requires that we establish a higher-dimensional generalization of the classical Plemelj-Privalov theorem, identifying a large class of singular integral operators that are bounded on generalized Hölder spaces. This class includes the Cauchy-Clifford operator and the harmonic double layer operator, among others.

Solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the heat equation implies parabolic uniform rectifiability

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be an open set in space-time with boundary $Σ= \partial Ω$. Under minimal and natural background assumptions - namely, that $Σ$ is time-symmetrically parabolic Ahlfors--David regular and that $Ω$ satisfies an interior corkscrew condition - we treat a one-phase parabolic free boundary problem which establishes the necessity of parabolic uniform rectifiability for $L^p(dσ)$ solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation. More precisely, we prove that if the caloric measure associated with $Ω$ satisfies a weak-$A_\infty$ condition with respect to the surface measure $σ= \mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{par}}^{n+1}\!\lfloor_Σ$, then $Σ$ is parabolically uniformly rectifiable, hence equivalently, that solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the heat (or adjoint heat) equation in $Ω$ with boundary data in $L^p(dσ)$, for some $p \in (1,\infty)$, implies parabolic uniform rectifiability. Our main theorem thus identifies parabolic uniform rectifiability as the correct geometric framework for boundary regularity, and $L^p$ solvability, in the parabolic setting.

Solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for the heat equation is equivalent to parabolic uniform rectifiability in the case of a parabolic Lipschitz graph

We prove that if a parabolic Lipschitz (i.e., Lip(1,1/2)) graph domain has the property that its caloric measure is a parabolic $A_\infty$ weight with respect to surface measure (which in turn is equivalent to $L^p$ solvability of the Dirichlet problem for some finite $p$), then the function defining the graph has a half-order time derivative in the space of (parabolic) bounded mean oscillation. Equivalently, we prove that the $A_\infty$ property of caloric measure implies, in this case, that the boundary is parabolic uniformly rectifiable. Consequently, by combining our result with the work of Lewis and Murray we resolve a long standing open problem in the field by characterizing those parabolic Lipschitz graph domains for which one has $L^p$ solvability (for some $p <\infty$) of the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation. The key idea of our proof is to view the level sets of the Green function as extensions of the original boundary graph for which we can prove (local) square function estimates of Littlewood-Paley type.

Elliptic operators in rough sets, and the Dirichlet problem with boundary data in Hölder spaces

In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for real-valued second order divergence form elliptic operators with boundary data in Hölder spaces. Our context is that of open sets $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n \ge 2$, satisfying the capacity density condition, without any further topological assumptions. Our main result states that if $Ω$ is either bounded, or unbounded with unbounded boundary, then the corresponding Dirichlet boundary value problem is well-posed; when $Ω$ is unbounded with bounded boundary, we establish that solutions exist, but they fail to be unique in general. These results are optimal in the sense that solvability of the Dirichlet problem in Hölder spaces is shown to imply the capacity density condition. As a consequence of the main result, we present a characterization of the Hölder spaces in terms of the boundary traces of solutions, and obtain well-posedness of several related Dirichlet boundary value problems. All the results above are new even for 1-sided chord-arc domains, and can be extended to generalized Hölder spaces associated with a natural class of growth functions.

A note on Rubio de Francia's extrapolation in tent spaces and applications

The Rubio de Francia extrapolation theorem is a very powerful result which states that in order to show that certain operators satisfy weighted norm inequalities with Muckenhoupt weights it suffices to see that the corresponding inequalities hold for some fixed exponent, for instance $p=2$. In this paper we extend this result and show that this extrapolation principle allows one to obtain weighted estimates in tent spaces. From our extrapolation result we automatically derive new estimates (and reprove some other) concerning Calderón-Zygmund operators, operators associated with the Kato conjecture, or fractional operators.

Carleson measure estimates, corona decompositions, and perturbation of elliptic operators without connectivity

Let $Ω$ be an open set with Ahlfors-David regular boundary satisfying the corkscrew condition. When $Ω$ is connected in some quantitative form one can establish that for any real elliptic operator with bounded coefficients, the quantitative absolute continuity of elliptic measures is equivalent to the fact that all bounded null solutions satisfy Carleson measure estimates. In turn, in the same setting these equivalent properties are stable under Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher perturbations. However, without connectivity, there is no Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher perturbation result available. In this paper, we work with a corona decomposition associated with the elliptic measure and show that it is equivalent to the fact that bounded null solutions satisfy partial/weak Carleson measure estimates, or to the fact that the Green function is comparable to the distance to the boundary in the corona sense. This characterization has profound consequences. We extend Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher's perturbation to non-connected settings. For the Laplacian, these corona decompositions or, equivalently, the partial/weak Carleson measure estimates are meaningful enough to characterize the uniform rectifiability of the boundary. As a consequence, we obtain that the boundary of the set is uniformly rectifiable if bounded null solutions for any Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher perturbation of the Laplacian satisfy Carleson measure estimates. For Kenig-Pipher operators any of the properties of the characterization is stable under transposition or symmetrization of the matrices of coefficients. As a result, we obtain that Carleson measure estimates for bounded null-solutions of non-symmetric variable operators satisfying an $L^1$-Kenig-Pipher condition occur if and only if the boundary of the open set is uniformly rectifiable. Our results generalize previous work in settings where quantitative connectivity.

The regularity problem for degenerate elliptic operators in weighted spaces

We study the solvability of the regularity problem for degenerate elliptic operators in the block case for data in weighted spaces. More precisely, let $L_w$ be a degenerate elliptic operator with degeneracy given by a fixed weight $w\in A_2(dx)$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and consider the associated block second order degenerate elliptic problem in the upper-half space $\mathbb{R}_+^{n+1}$. We obtain non-tangential bounds for the full gradient of the solution of the block case operator given by the Poisson semigroup in terms of the gradient of the boundary data. All this is done in the spaces $L^p(vdw)$ where $v$ is a Muckenhoupt weight with respect to the underlying natural weighted space $(\mathbb{R}^n, wdx)$. We recover earlier results in the non-degenerate case (when $w\equiv 1$, and with or without weight $v$). Our strategy is also different and more direct thanks in particular to recent observations on change of angles in weighted square function estimates and non-tangential maximal functions. Our method gives as a consequence the (unweighted) $L^2(dx)$-solvability of the regularity problem for the block operator \[ \mathbb{L}_αu(x,t) = -|x|^α \mathrm{div}_x \big(|x|^{-α}\,A(x) \nabla_x u(x,t)\big)-\partial_{t}^2 u(x,t) \] for any complex-valued uniformly elliptic matrix $A$ and for all $-ε<α<\frac{2\,n}{n+2}$, where $ε$ depends just on the dimension and the ellipticity constants of $A$.

Perturbation of elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), i.e., a set which satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Assume that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition. Let $L_0u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators, and write $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ for the associated elliptic measures. The goal of this program is to find sufficient conditions guaranteeing that $ω_L$ satisfies an $A_\infty$-condition or a $RH_q$-condition with respect to $ω_{L_0}$. We show that if the discrepancy of the two matrices satisfies a natural Carleson measure condition with respect to $ω_{L_0}$, then $ω_L\in A_\infty(ω_{L_0})$. Moreover, $ω_L\in RH_q(ω_{L_0})$ for any given $1<q<\infty$ if the Carleson measure condition is assumed to hold with a sufficiently small constant. This extends previous work of Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher and Milakis-Pipher-Toro who considered Lipschitz and chord-arc domains. Here we go beyond as the capacity density condition is much weaker than the existence of exterior Corkscrew balls. The "large constant" case, where the discrepancy satisfies a Carleson measure condition, is new even for nice domains such as the unit ball, the upper half-space, or Lipschitz domains, and is obtained using the method of extrapolation of Carleson measure. Our domains do not have a nice surface measure: all the analysis is done with the underlying measure $ω_{L_0}$. When particularized to Lipschitz, chord-arc, or 1-sided chord-arc domains, we recover previous results and extend some of them. Our arguments rely on the square function and non-tangential estimates proved in arXiv:2103.10046.

Square function and non-tangential maximal function estimates for elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (aka uniform domain), that is, $Ω$ satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, which are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Let us assume also that $Ω$ satisfies the so-called capacity density condition, a quantitative version of the fact that all boundary points are Wiener regular. Consider $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0\nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$, two real (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, and write $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ for the respective associated elliptic measures. The goal of this program is to find sufficient conditions guaranteeing that $ω_L$ satisfies an $A_\infty$-condition or a $RH_q$-condition with respect to $ω_{L_0}$. In this paper we are interested in obtaining square function and non-tangential estimates for solutions of operators as before. We establish that bounded weak null-solutions satisfy Carleson measure estimates, with respect to the associated elliptic measure. We also show that for every weak null-solution, the associated square function can be controlled by the non-tangential maximal function in any Lebesgue space with respect to the associated elliptic measure. These results extend previous work of Dahlberg-Jerison-Kenig and are fundamental for the proof of the perturbation results in arXiv:1901.08261.

On the $A_\infty$ condition for elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (i.e., quantitatively open and path-connected) satisfiying the capacity density condition. Let $L_0 u=-\mathrm{div}(A_0 \nabla u)$, $Lu=-\mathrm{div}(A\nabla u)$ be two real uniformly elliptic operators in $Ω$, with $ω_{L_0}, ω_L$ the associated elliptic measures. We establish the equivalence between the following properties: (i) $ω_L \in A_{\infty}(ω_{L_0})$, (ii) $L$ is $L^p(ω_{L_0})$-solvable for some $p\in (1,\infty)$, (iii) bounded null solutions of $L$ satisfy Carleson measure estimates with respect to $ω_{L_0}$, (iv) the conical square function is controlled by the non-tangential maximal function in $L^q(ω_{L_0})$ for some (or for all) $q\in (0,\infty)$ for any null solution of $L$, and (v) $L$ is $\mathrm{BMO}(ω_{L_0})$-solvable. Moreover, in each of the properties (ii)-(v) it is enough to consider the class of solutions $u(X)=ω_L^X(S)$ with arbitrary Borel sets $S\subset\partialΩ$. Also, we characterize the absolute continuity of $ω_{L_0}$ with respect to $ω_L$ in terms of some qualitative local $L^2(ω_{L_0})$ estimates for the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. This is also equivalent to the finiteness $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution of $L$. As applications, we show that $ω_{L_0}\llω_L$ if the disagreement of the coefficients satisfies some qualitative quadratic estimate in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex. Finally, when $L_0$ is either the transpose of $L$ or its symmetric part, we obtain the corresponding absolute continuity when the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for $ω_{L_0}$-a.e. vertex.

Extrapolation on function and modular spaces, and applications

We generalize the extrapolation theory of Rubio de Francia to the context of Banach function spaces and modular spaces. Our results are formulated in terms of some natural weighted estimates for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function and are stated in measure spaces and for general Muckenhoupt bases. Finally, we give several applications in analysis and partial differential equations.

Elliptic measures and Square function estimates on 1-sided chord-arc domains

In nice environments, such as Lipschitz or chord-arc domains, it is well-known that the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic operator in $L^p$, for some finite $p$, is equivalent to the fact that the associated elliptic measure belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_\infty$. In turn, any of these conditions occurs if and only if the gradient of every bounded null solution satisfies a Carleson measure estimate. This has been recently extended to much rougher settings such as those of 1-sided chord-arc domains, that is, sets which are quantitatively open and connected with a boundary which is Ahlfors-David regular. In this paper, we work in the same environment and consider a qualitative analog of the latter equivalence showing that one can characterize the absolute continuity of the surface measure with respect to the elliptic measure in terms of the finiteness almost everywhere of the truncated conical square function for any bounded null solution. As a consequence of our main result particularized to the Laplace operator and some previous results, we show that the boundary of the domain is rectifiable if and only if the truncated conical square function is finite almost everywhere for any bounded harmonic function. Also, we obtain that for two given elliptic operators $L_1$ and $L_2$, the absolute continuity of the surface measure with respect to the elliptic measure of $L_1$ is equivalent to the same property for $L_2$ provided the disagreement of the coefficients satisfy some quadratic estimate in truncated cones for almost everywhere vertex. Finally for the case on which $L_2$ is either the transpose of $L_1$ or its symmetric part we show the equivalence of the corresponding absolute continuity upon assuming that the antisymmetric part of the coefficients has some controlled oscillation in truncated cones for almost every vertex.

The regularity problem for uniformly elliptic operators in weighted spaces

This paper studies the regularity problem for block uniformly elliptic operators in divergence form with complex bounded measurable coefficients. We consider the case where the boundary data belongs to Lebesgue spaces with weights in the Muckenhoupt classes. Our results generalize those of S. Mayboroda (and those of P. Auscher and S. Stahlhut employing the first order method) who considered the unweighted case. To obtain our main results we use the weighted Hardy space theory associated with elliptic operators recently developed by the last two named authors. One of the novel contributions of this paper is the use of an "inhomogeneous" vertical square function which is shown to be controlled by the gradient of the function to which is applied in weighted Lebesgue spaces.

Uniform rectifiability and elliptic operators satisfying a Carleson measure condition

The present paper establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. We settle the question of whether (quantitative) absolute continuity of the elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure and uniform rectifiability of the boundary are equivalent, in an optimal class of divergence form elliptic operators satisfying a suitable Carleson measure condition. The result can be viewed as a quantitative analogue of the Wiener criterion adapted to the singular $L^p$ data case. We split our proof on two main steps. In the first one we considered the case in which the desired Carleson measure condition on the coefficients holds with "sufficiently small constant", using a novel application of techniques developed in geometric measure theory. In the second step we establish the final result, that is, the "large constant case". The key elements are a powerful extrapolation argument, which provides a general pathway to self-improve scale-invariant small constant estimates, and a new mechanism to transfer quantitative absolute continuity of elliptic measure between a domain and its subdomains.

Transference of scale-invariant estimates from Lipschitz to Non-tangentially accessible to Uniformly rectifiable domains

In relatively nice geometric settings, in particular, on Lipschitz domains, absolute continuity of elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure is equivalent to Carleson measure estimates, to square function estimates, and to $\varepsilon$-approximability, for solutions to the second order divergence form elliptic partial differential equations $ Lu= -{\rm div\,} (A \nabla u)=0$. In more general situations, notably, in an open set $Ω$ with a uniformly rectifiable boundary, absolute continuity of elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure may fail, already for the Laplacian. In the present paper, the authors demonstrate that nonetheless, Carleson measure estimates, square function estimates, and $\varepsilon$-approximability remain valid in such $Ω$, for solutions of $Lu=0$, provided that such solutions enjoy these properties in Lipschitz subdomains of $Ω$. Moreover, we establish a general real-variable transference principle, from Lipschitz to chord-arc domains, and from chord-arc to open sets with uniformly rectifiable boundary, that is not restricted to harmonic functions or even to solutions of elliptic equations. In particular, this allows one to deduce the first Carleson measure estimates and square function bounds for higher order systems on open sets with uniformly rectifiable boundaries and to treat subsolutions and subharmonic functions.

Harmonic measure and quantitative connectivity: geometric characterization of the $L^p$-solvability of the Dirichlet problem

It is well-known that quantitative, scale invariant absolute continuity (more precisely, the weak-$A_\infty$ property) of harmonic measure with respect to surface measure, on the boundary of an open set $ Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with Ahlfors-David regular boundary, is equivalent to the solvability of the Dirichlet problem in $Ω$, with data in $L^p(\partialΩ)$ for some $p<\infty$. In this paper, we give a geometric characterization of the weak-$A_\infty$ property, of harmonic measure, and hence of solvability of the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for some finite $p$. This characterization is obtained under background hypotheses (an interior corkscrew condition, along with Ahlfors-David regularity of the boundary) that are natural, and in a certain sense optimal: we provide counter-examples in the absence of either of them (or even one of the two, upper or lower, Ahlfors-David bounds); moreover, the examples show that the upper and lower Ahlfors-David bounds are each quantitatively sharp.

End-point estimates, extrapolation for multilinear Muckenhoupt classes, and applications

In this paper we present the results announced in the recent work by the first, second, and fourth authors of the current paper concerning Rubio de Francia extrapolation for the so-called multilinear Muckenhoupt classes. Here we consider the situations where some of the exponents of the Lebesgue spaces appearing in the hypotheses and/or in the conclusion can be possibly infinity. The scheme we follow is similar, but, in doing so, we need to develop a one-variable end-point off-diagonal extrapolation result. This complements the corresponding ``finite'' case obtained by Duoandikoetxea, which was one of the main tools in the aforementioned paper. The second goal of this paper is to present some applications. For example, we obtain the full range of mixed-norm estimates for tensor products of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators with a proof based on extrapolation and on some estimates with weights in some mixed-norm classes. The same occurs with the multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators, the bilinear Hilbert transform, and the corresponding commutators with BMO functions. Extrapolation along with the already established weighted norm inequalities easily give scalar and vector-valued inequalities with multilinear weights and these include the end-point cases.

Uniform rectifiability and elliptic operators satisfying a Carleson measure condition. Part I: The small constant case

The present paper, along with its sequel, establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. This paper addresses the free boundary problem under the assumption of smallness of the Carleson measure of the coefficients. Part II of this work develops an extrapolation argument to bootstrap this result to the general case. The ideas in Part I constitute a novel application of techniques developed in geometric measure theory. They highlight the synergy between several areas. The ideas developed in this paper are well suited to study singularities arising in variational problems in a geometric setting.
