Uniform rectifiability and elliptic operators satisfying a Carleson measure condition. Part II: The large constant case

The present paper, along with its companion [Hofmann, Martell, Mayboroda, Toro, Zhao, arXiv:1710.06157], establishes the correspondence between the properties of the solutions of a class of PDEs and the geometry of sets in Euclidean space. We settle the question of whether (quantitative) absolute continuity of the elliptic measure with respect to the surface measure and uniform rectifiability of the boundary are equivalent, in an optimal class of divergence form elliptic operators satisfying a suitable Carleson measure condition. The result can be viewed as a quantitative analogue of the Wiener criterion adapted to the singular $L^p$ data case. The first step in this direction was taken in our previous paper [Hofmann, Martell, Mayboroda, Toro, Zhao, arXiv:1710.06157], where we considered the case in which the desired Carleson measure condition on the coefficients holds with sufficiently small constant. In this paper we establish the final, general result, that is, the "large constant case". The key elements of our approach are a powerful extrapolation argument, which provides a general pathway to self-improve scale-invariant small constant estimates, as well as a new mechanism to transfer quantitative absolute continuity of elliptic measure between a domain and its subdomains.

Perturbations of elliptic operators in 1-sided chord-arc domains. Part II: Non-symmetric operators and Carleson measure estimates

We generalize to the setting of 1-sided chord-arc domains, that is, to domains satisfying the interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness) and which have an Ahlfors regular boundary, a result of Kenig-Kirchheim-Pipher-Toro, in which Carleson measure estimates for bounded solutions of the equation $Lu=-{\rm div}(A\nabla u) = 0$ with $A$ being a real (not necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic matrix, imply that the corresponding elliptic measure belongs to the Muckenhoupt $A_\infty$ class with respect to surface measure on the boundary. We present two applications of this result. In the first one we extend a perturbation result recently proved by Cavero-Hofmann-Martell presenting a simpler proof and allowing non-symmetric coefficients. Second, we prove that if an operator $L$ as above has locally Lipschitz coefficients satisfying certain Carleson measure condition then $ω_L\in A_\infty$ if and only if $ω_{L^\top}\in A_\infty$. As a consequence, we can remove one of the main assumptions in the non-symmetric case of a result of Hofmann-Martell-Toro and show that if the coefficients satisfy a slightly stronger Carleson measure condition the membership of the elliptic measure associated with $L$ to the class $A_\infty$ yields that the domain is indeed a chord-arc domain.

The generalized Hölder and Morrey-Campanato Dirichlet problems for elliptic systems in the upper-half space

We prove well-posedness results for the Dirichlet problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ for homogeneous, second order, constant complex coefficient elliptic systems with boundary data in generalized Hölder spaces $\mathscr{C}^ω(\mathbb{R}^{n-1},\mathbb{C}^M)$ and in generalized Morrey-Campanato spaces $\mathscr{E}^{ω,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n-1},\mathbb{C}^M)$ under certain assumptions on the growth function $ω$. We also identify a class of growth functions $ω$ for which $\mathscr{C}^ω(\mathbb{R}^{n-1},\mathbb{C}^M)=\mathscr{E}^{ω,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n-1},\mathbb{C}^M)$ and for which the aforementioned well-posedness results are equivalent, in the sense that they have the same unique solution, satisfying natural regularity properties and estimates.

Fatou-Type Theorems and Boundary Value Problems for Elliptic Systems in the Upper Half-Space

We survey recent progress in a program aimed at proving general Fatou-type results and establishing the well-posedness of a variety of boundary value problems in the upper half-space ${\mathbb{R}}^n_{+}$ for second-order, homogeneous, constant complex coefficient, elliptic systems $L$, formulated in a manner that emphasizes pointwise nontangential boundary traces of the null-solutions of $L$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^n_{+}$.

The BMO-Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems in the upper-half space and quantitative characterizations of VMO

We prove that for any homogeneous, second order, constant complex coefficient elliptic system $L$, the Dirichlet problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ with boundary data in BMO is well-posed in the class of functions $u$ with $dμ_u(x',t):=|\nabla u(x',t)|^2\,t\,dx'dt$ being a Carleson measure. We establish a Fatou type theorem guaranteeing the existence of the pointwise nontangential boundary trace for smooth null-solutions $u$ of such systems satisfying the said Carleson measure condition. These imply that BMO can be characterized as the collection of nontangential pointwise traces of smooth null-solutions $u$ to the elliptic system $L$ with the property that $μ_u$ is a Carleson measure. We establish a regularity result for the BMO-Dirichlet problem in the upper-half space: the nontangential pointwise trace of any given smooth null-solutions of $L$ satisfying the above Carleson measure condition belongs to Sarason's space VMO if and only if $μ_u$ satsifies a vanishing Carleson measure condition. Moreover, we obtain the well-posedness of the Dirichlet problems when the boundary data are prescribed in Morrey-Campanato and solutions are required to satisfy a vanishing Carleson measure condition of fractional order. As a consequence, we characterize the space VMO as the closure in BMO of classes of smooth functions contained in BMO within which uniform continuity may be suitably quantified (such as the class of smooth functions satisfying a Hölder or Lipschitz condition), improving Sarason's classical result describing VMO as the closure in BMO of the space of uniformly continuous functions with bounded mean oscillations. Finally, we show that any Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ satisfying $T(1)=0$ extends as a bounded linear operator in $\mathrm{VMO}$, and characterize the membership to $\mathrm{VMO}$ via the action of various classes of singular integral operators.

Harmonic measure and quantitative connectivity: geometric characterization of the $L^p$-solvability of the Dirichlet problem. Part I

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be an open set, not necessarily connected, with an $n$-dimensional uniformly rectifiable boundary. We show that $\partialΩ$ may be approximated in a "Big Pieces" sense by boundaries of chord-arc subdomains of $Ω$, and hence that harmonic measure for $Ω$ is weak-$A_\infty$ with respect to surface measure on $\partialΩ$, provided that $Ω$ satisfies a certain weak version of a local John condition. Under the further assumption that $Ω$ satisfies an interior Corkscrew condition, and combined with our previous work, and with recent work of Azzam, Mourgoglou and Tolsa, this yields a geometric characterization of domains whose harmonic measure is quantitatively absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure and hence a haracterization of the fact that the associated $L^p$-Dirichlet problem is solvable for some finite $p$.

Extrapolation for multilinear Muckenhoupt classes and applications to the bilinear Hilbert transform

In this paper we solve a long standing problem about the multivariable Rubio de Francia extrapolation theorem for the multilinear Muckenhoupt classes $A_{\vec{p}}$, which were extensively studied by Lerner et al. and which are the natural ones for the class of multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. Furthermore, we go beyond the classes $A_{\vec{p}}$ and extrapolate within the classes $A_{\vec{p},\vec{r}}$ which appear naturally associated to the weighted norm inequalities for multilinear sparse forms which control fundamental operators such as the bilinear Hilbert transform. We give several applications which can be easily obtained using extrapolation. First, for the bilinear Hilbert transform one can extrapolate from the recent result of Culiuc et al. who considered the Banach range and extend the estimates to the quasi-Banach range. As a direct consequence, we obtain weighted vector-valued inequalities reproving some of the results by Benea and Muscalu. We also extend recent results of Carando et al. on Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund estimates for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. Finally, our last application gives new weighted estimates for the commutators of multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators and for the bilinear Hilbert transform with BMO functions using ideas from Bényi et al.

On the Kato problem and extensions for degenerate elliptic operators

We study the Kato problem for degenerate divergence form operators. This was begun by Cruz-Uribe and Rios who proved that given an operator $L_w=-w^{-1}{\rm div}(A\nabla)$, where $w\in A_2$ and $A$ is a $w$-degenerate elliptic measure (i.e, $A=w\,B$ with $B$ an $n\times n$ bounded, complex-valued, uniformly elliptic matrix), then $L_w$ satisfies the weighted estimate $\|\sqrt{L_w}f\|_{L^2(w)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(w)}$. Here we solve the $L^2$-Kato problem: under some additional conditions on the weight $w$, the following unweighted $L^2$-Kato estimates hold $$ \|L_w^{1/2}f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}. $$ This extends the celebrated solution to the Kato conjecture by Auscher, Hofmann, Lacey, McIntosh, and Tchamitchian, allowing the differential operator to have some degeneracy in its ellipticity. For example, we consider the family of operators $L_γ=-|x|^γ{\rm div}(|x|^{-γ}B(x)\nabla)$, where $B$ is any bounded, complex-valued, uniformly elliptic matrix. We prove that there exists $ε>0$, depending only on dimension and the ellipticity constants, such that $$ \|L_γ^{1/2}f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}\approx\|\nabla f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}, \qquad -ε<γ<\frac{2\,n}{n+2}. $$ This gives a range of $γ$'s for which the classical Kato square root $γ=0$ is an interior point. Our main results are obtained as a consequence of a rich Calderón-Zygmund theory developed for some operators associated with $L_w$. These results, which are of independent interest, establish estimates on $L^p(w)$, and also on $L^p(v\,dw)$ with $v\in A_\infty(w)$, for the associated semigroup, its gradient, the functional calculus, the Riesz transform, and square functions. As an application, we solve some unweighted $L^2$-Dirichlet, Regularity and Neumann boundary value problems for degenerate elliptic operators.

Perturbations of elliptic operators in 1-sided chord-arc domains. Part I: Small and large perturbation for symmetric operators

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a 1-sided chord-arc domain, that is, a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions (these are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of the openness and path-connectedness), and whose boundary $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors regular. Consider $L_0$ and $L$ two real symmetric divergence form elliptic operators and let $ω_{L_0}$, $ω_L$ be the associated elliptic measures. We show that if $ω_{L_0}\in A_\infty(σ)$, where $σ=H^n|_{\partialΩ}$, and $L$ is a perturbation of $L_0$ (in the sense that the discrepancy between $L_0$ and $L$ satisfies certain Carleson measure condition), then $ω_L\in A_\infty(σ)$. Moreover, if $L$ is a sufficiently small perturbation of $L_0$, then one can preserve the reverse Hölder classes, that is, if for some $1<p<\infty$, one has $ω_{L_0}\in RH_p(σ)$ then $ω_{L}\in RH_p(σ)$. Equivalently, if the Dirichlet problem with data in $L^{p'}(σ)$ is solvable for $L_0$ then so it is for $L$. These results can be seen as extensions of the perturbation theorems obtained by Dahlberg, Fefferman-Kenig-Pipher, and Milakis-Pipher-Toro in more benign settings. As a consequence of our methods we can show that for any perturbation of the Laplacian (or, more in general, of any elliptic symmetric operator with Lipschitz coefficients satisfying certain Carleson condition) if its elliptic measure belongs to $A_\infty(σ)$ then necessarily $Ω$ is in fact an NTA domain (and hence chord-arc) and therefore its boundary is uniformly rectifiable.

$A_\infty$ implies NTA for a class of variable coefficient elliptic operators

We consider a certain class of second order, variable coefficient divergence form elliptic operators, in a uniform domain $Ω$ with Ahlfors regular boundary, and we show that the $A_\infty$ property of the elliptic measure associated to any such operator and its transpose imply that the domain is in fact NTA (and hence chord-arc). The converse was already known, and follows from work of Kenig and Pipher.

Limited range multilinear extrapolation with applications to the bilinear Hilbert transform

We prove a limited range, off-diagonal extrapolation theorem that generalizes a number of results in the theory of Rubio de Francia extrapolation, and use this to prove a limited range, multilinear extrapolation theorem. We give two applications of this result to the bilinear Hilbert transform. First, we give sufficient conditions on a pair of weights $w_1,\,w_2$ for the bilinear Hilbert transform to satisfy weighted norm inequalities of the form \[ BH : L^{p_1}(w_1^{p_1}) \times L^{p_2}(w_2^{p_2}) \longrightarrow L^p(w^p), \] where $w=w_1w_2$ and $\frac{1}{p}=\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}<\frac{3}{2}$. This improves the recent results of Culiuc et al. by increasing the families of weights for which this inequality holds and by pushing the lower bound on $p$ from $1$ down to $\frac{2}{3}$, the critical index from the unweighted theory of the bilinear Hilbert transform. Second, as an easy consequence of our method we obtain that the bilinear Hilbert transform satisfies some vector-valued inequalities with Muckenhoupt weights. This reproves and generalizes some of the vector-valued estimates obtained by Benea and Muscalu in the unweighted case. We also generalize recent results of Carando, et al. on Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund estimates for multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators.

Conical square functions for degenerate elliptic operators

The aim of this paper is to study the boundedness of different conical square functions that arise naturally from second order divergence form degenerate elliptic operators. More precisely, let $L_w=w^{-1}\,{\rm div}(w\,A\,\nabla)$ where $w\in A_2$ and $A$ is an $n\times n$ bounded, complex-valued, uniformly elliptic matrix. D. Cruz-Uribe and C. Rios solved the $L^2(w)$-Kato square root problem obtaining that $\sqrt{L_w}$ is equivalent to the gradient on $L^2(w)$. The same authors in collaboration with the second named author of this paper studied the $L^p(w)$-boundedness of operators that are naturally associated with $L_w$, such as the functional calculus, Riesz transforms, or vertical square functions. The theory developed admitted also weighted estimates (i.e., estimates in $L^p(v dw)$ for $v\in A_\infty(w)$), and in particular a class of "degeneracy" weights $w$ was found in such a way that the classical $L^2$-Kato problem can be solved. In this paper, continuing this line of research, and also that originated in some recent results by the second and third named authors of the current paper, we study the boundedness on $L^p(w)$ and on $L^p(v dw)$, with $v\in A_\infty(w)$, of the conical square functions that one can construct using the heat or Poisson semigroup associated with $L_w$. As a consequence of our methods, we find a class of degeneracy weights $w$ for which $L^2$-estimates for these conical square functions hold. This opens the door to the study of weighted and unweighted Hardy spaces and of boundary value problems associated with $L_w$.

Rectifiability and elliptic measures on 1-sided NTA domains with Ahlfors-David regular boundaries

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, be 1-sided NTA domain (aka uniform domain), i.e. a domain which satisfies interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions, and assume that $\partialΩ$ is $n$-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular. We characterize the rectifiability of $\partialΩ$ in terms of the absolute continuity of surface measure with respect to harmonic measure. We also show that these are equivalent to the fact that $\partialΩ$ can be covered $\mathcal{H}^n$-a.e. by a countable union of portions of boundaries of bounded chord-arc subdomains of $Ω$ and to the fact that $\partialΩ$ possesses exterior corkscrew points in a qualitative way $\mathcal{H}^n$-a.e. Our methods apply to harmonic measure and also to elliptic measures associated with real symmetric second order divergence form elliptic operators with locally Lipschitz coefficients whose derivatives satisfy a natural qualitative Carleson condition.

Weighted Hardy spaces associated with elliptic operators. Part I: Weighted norm inequalities for conical square functions

This is the first part of a series of three articles. In this paper, we obtain weighted norm inequalities for different conical square functions associated with the Heat and the Poisson semigroups generated by a second order divergence form elliptic operator with bounded complex coefficients. We find classes of Muckenhoupt weights where the square functions are comparable and/or bounded. These classes are natural from the point of view of the ranges where the unweighted estimates hold. In doing that, we obtain sharp weighted change of angle formulas which allow us to compare conical square functions with different cone apertures in weighted Lebesgue spaces. A key ingredient in our proofs is a generalization of the Carleson measure condition which is more natural when estimating the square functions below $p=2$.

Weighted Hardy spaces associated with elliptic operators. Part II: Characterizations of $H^1_L(w)$

Given a Muckenhoupt weight $w$ and a second order divergence form elliptic operator $L$, we consider different versions of the weighted Hardy space $H^1_L(w)$ defined by conical square functions and non-tangential maximal functions associated with the heat and Poisson semigroups generated by $L$. We show that all of them are isomorphic and also that $H^1_L(w)$ admits a molecular characterization. One of the advantages of our methods is that our assumptions extend naturally the unweighted theory developed by S. Hofmann and S. Mayboroda and we can immediately recover the unweighted case. Some of our tools consist in establishing weighted norm inequalities for the non-tangential maximal functions, as well as comparing them with some conical square functions in weighted Lebesgue spaces.

The Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems with data in Köthe function spaces

We show that the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on a Köthe function space ${\mathbb{X}}$ and on its Köthe dual ${\mathbb{X}}'$ is equivalent to the well-posedness of the $\mathbb{X}$-Dirichlet and $\mathbb{X}'$-Dirichlet problems in $\mathbb{R}^{n}_{+}$ in the class of all second-order, homogeneous, elliptic systems, with constant complex coefficients. As a consequence, we obtain that the Dirichlet problem for such systems is well-posed for boundary data in Lebesgue spaces, variable exponent Lebesgue spaces, Lorentz spaces, Zygmund spaces, as well as their weighted versions. We also discuss a version of the aforementioned result which contains, as a particular case, the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems with data in the classical Hardy space $H^1$, and the Beurling-Hardy space ${\rm HA}^p$ for $p\in(1,\infty)$. Based on the well-posedness of the $L^p$-Dirichlet problem we then prove the uniqueness of the Poisson kernel associated with such systems, as well as the fact that they generate a strongly continuous semigroup in natural settings. Finally, we establish a general Fatou type theorem guaranteeing the existence of the pointwise nontangential boundary trace for null-solutions of such systems.

Oscillation estimates, self-improving results and good-$λ$ inequalities

Our main result is an abstract good-$λ$ inequality that allows us to consider three self-improving properties related to oscillation estimates in a very general context. The novelty of our approach is that there is one principle behind these self-improving phenomena. First, we obtain higher integrability properties for functions belonging to the so-called John-Nirenberg spaces. Second, and as a consequence of the previous fact, we present very easy proofs of some of the self-improving properties of the generalized Poincaré inequalities studied by B. Franchi, C. Pérez and R. Wheeden, and by P. MacManus and C. Pérez . Finally, we show that a weak Gurov-Reshetnyak condition implies higher integrability with asymptotically sharp estimates. We discuss these questions both in Euclidean spaces with dyadic cubes and in spaces of homogeneous type with metric balls. We develop new techniques that apply to more general oscillations than the standard mean oscillation and to overlapping balls instead of dyadic cubes.
