Rectifiability of harmonic measure

In the present paper we prove that for any open connected set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 1$, and any $E\subset \partial Ω$ with $\mathcal{H}^n(E)<\infty$, absolute continuity of the harmonic measure $ω$ with respect to the Hausdorff measure on $E$ implies that $ω|_E$ is rectifiable. This solves an open problem on harmonic measure which turns out to be an old conjecture even in the planar case $n=1$.

The weak-$A_\infty$ property of harmonic and $p$-harmonic measures implies uniform rectifiability

Let $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be an Ahlfors-David regular set of dimension $n$. We show that the weak-$A_\infty$ property of harmonic measure, for the open set $Ω:= \mathbb{R}^{n+1}\setminus E$, implies uniform rectifiability of $E$. More generally, we establish a similar result for the Riesz measure, $p$-harmonic measure, associated to the $p$-Laplace operator, $1<p<\infty$.

Uniform rectifiability and harmonic measure I: Uniform rectifiability implies Poisson kernels in $L^p$

We present a higher dimensional, scale-invariant version of a classical theorem of F. and M. Riesz. More precisely, we establish scale invariant absolute continuity of harmonic measure with respect to surface measure, along with higher integrability of the Poisson kernel, for a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1},\, n\geq 2$, with a uniformly rectifiable boundary, which satisfies the Harnack Chain condition plus an interior (but not exterior) corkscrew condition. In a companion paper to this one [HMU], we also establish a converse, in which we deduce uniform rectifiability of the boundary, assuming scale invariant $L^q$ bounds, with $q>1$, on the Poisson kernel.

Greedy bases in variable Lebesgue spaces

We compute the right and left democracy functions of admissible wavelet bases in variable Lebesgue spaces defined on $R^n$. As an application we give Lebesgue type inequalities for these wavelet bases. We also show that our techniques can be easily modified to prove analogous results for weighted variable Lebesgue spaces and variable exponent Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.

On the $L^p$-Poisson semigroup associated with elliptic systems

We study the infinitesimal generator of the Poisson semigroup in $L^p$ associated with homogeneous, second-order, strongly elliptic systems with constant complex coefficients in the upper-half space, which is proved to be the Dirichlet-to-Normal mapping in this setting. Also, its domain is identified as the linear subspace of the $L^p$-based Sobolev space of order one on the boundary of the upper-half space consisting of functions for which the Regularity problem is solvable. Moreover, for a class of systems containing the Lamé system, as well as all second-order, scalar elliptic operators, with constant complex coefficients, the action of the infinitesimal generator is explicitly described in terms of singular integral operators whose kernels involve first-order derivatives of the canonical fundamental solution of the given system. Furthermore, arbitrary powers of the infinitesimal generator of the said Poisson semigroup are also described in terms of higher order Sobolev spaces and a higher order Regularity problem for the system in question. Finally, we indicate how our techniques may adapted to treat the case of higher order systems in graph Lipschitz domains.

Dyadic harmonic analysis beyond doubling measures

We characterize the Borel measures $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}$ for which the associated dyadic Hilbert transform, or its adjoint, is of weak-type $(1,1)$ and/or strong-type $(p,p)$ with respect to $μ$. Surprisingly, the class of such measures is strictly bigger than the traditional class of dyadically doubling measures and strictly smaller than the whole Borel class. In higher dimensions, we provide a complete characterization of the weak-type $(1,1)$ for arbitrary Haar shift operators, cancellative or not, written in terms of two generalized Haar systems and these include the dyadic paraproducts. Our main tool is a new Calderón-Zygmund decomposition valid for arbitrary Borel measures which is of independent interest.

A new characterization of chord-arc domains

We show that if $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 1$, is a uniform domain (aka 1-sided NTA domain), i.e., a domain which enjoys interior Corkscrew and Harnack Chain conditions, then uniform rectifiability of the boundary of $Ω$ implies the existence of exterior Corkscrew points at all scales, so that in fact, $Ω$ is a chord-arc domain, i.e., a domain with an Ahlfors-David regular boundary which satisfies both interior and exterior Corkscrew conditions, and an interior Harnack Chain condition. We discuss some implications of this result, for theorems of F. and M. Riesz type, and for certain free boundary problems.

The higher order regularity Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems in the upper-half space

We identify a large class of constant (complex) coefficient, second order elliptic systems for which the Dirichlet problem in the upper-half space with data in $L^p$-based Sobolev spaces, $1<p<\infty$, of arbitrary smoothness $\ell$, is well-posed in the class of functions whose nontangential maximal operator of their derivatives up to, and including, order $\ell$ is $L^p$-integrable. This class includes all scalar, complex coefficient elliptic operators of second order, as well as the Lamé system of elasticity, among others.

Uniform Rectifiability and Harmonic Measure III: Riesz transform bounds imply uniform rectifiability of boundaries of 1-sided NTA domains

Let $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a closed, Ahlfors-David regular set of dimension $n$ satisfying the "Riesz Transform bound" $$\sup_{\varepsilon>0}\int_E\left|\int_{\{y\in E:|x-y|>\varepsilon\}}\frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} f(y) dH^n(y)\right|^2 dH^n(x) \leq C \int_E|f|^2 dH^n .$$ Assume further that $E$ is the boundary of a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying the Harnack Chain condition plus an interior (but not exterior) Corkscrew condition. Then $E$ is uniformly rectifiable.

Uniform rectifiability and harmonic measure II: Poisson kernels in $L^p$ imply uniform rectifiability

We present the converse to a higher dimensional, scale-invariant version of a classical theorem of F. and M. Riesz. More precisely, for $n\geq 2$, for an ADR domain $Ω\subset \re^{n+1}$ which satisfies the Harnack Chain condition plus an interior (but not exterior) Corkscrew condition, we show that absolute continuity of harmonic measure with respect to surface measure on $\partialΩ$, with scale invariant higher integrability of the Poisson kernel, is sufficient to imply uniformly rectifiable of $\partialΩ$.

A note on the off-diagonal Muckenhoupt-Wheeden conjecture

We obtain the off-diagonal Muckenhoupt-Wheeden conjecture for Calderón-Zygmund operators. Namely, given $1<p<q<\infty$ and a pair of weights $(u,v)$, if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function satisfies the following two weight inequalities: $$ M : L^p(v) \rightarrow L^q(u) \quad \text{and} \quad M: L^{q'}(u^{1-q'}) \rightarrow L^{p'}(v^{1-p'}), $$ then any Calderón-Zygmund operator $T$ and its associated truncated maximal operator $T_\star$ are bounded from $L^p(v)$ to $L^q(u)$. Additionally, assuming only the second estimate for $M$ then $T$ and $T_\star$ map continuously $L^p(v)$ into $L^{q,\infty}(u)$. We also consider the case of generalized Haar shift operators and show that their off-diagonal two weight estimates are governed by the corresponding estimates for the dyadic Hardy-Littlewood maximal function.

Calderón-Zygmund operators associated to matrix-valued kernels

Calderón-Zygmund operators with noncommuting kernels may fail to be Lp-bounded for $p \neq 2$, even for kernels with good size and smoothness properties. Matrix-valued paraproducts, Fourier multipliers on group vNa's or noncommutative martingale transforms are frameworks where we find such difficulties. We obtain weak type estimates for perfect dyadic CZO's and cancellative Haar shifts associated to noncommuting kernels in terms of a row/column decomposition of the function. Arbitrary CZO's satisfy $H_1 \to L_1$ type estimates. In conjunction with $L_\infty \to BMO$, we get certain row/column Lp estimates. Our approach also applies to noncommutative paraproducts or martingale transforms with noncommuting symbols/coefficients. Our results complement recent results of Junge, Mei, Parcet and Randrianantoanina.
