Backward Reconstruction of the Chafee--Infante Equation via Physics-Informed WGAN-GP

We present a physics-informed Wasserstein GAN with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP) for solving the inverse Chafee--Infante problem on two-dimensional domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The objective is to reconstruct an unknown initial condition from a near-equilibrium state obtained after 100 explicit forward Euler iterations of the reaction-diffusion equation \[ u_t - γΔu + κ\left(u^3 - u\right)=0. \] Because this mapping strongly damps high-frequency content, the inverse problem is severely ill-posed and sensitive to noise. Our approach integrates a U-Net generator, a PatchGAN critic with spectral normalization, Wasserstein loss with gradient penalty, and several physics-informed auxiliary terms, including Lyapunov energy matching, distributional statistics, and a crucial forward-simulation penalty. This penalty enforces consistency between the predicted initial condition and its forward evolution under the \emph{same} forward Euler discretization used for dataset generation. Earlier experiments employing an Eyre-type semi-implicit solver were not compatible with this residual mechanism due to the cost and instability of Newton iterations within batched GPU training. On a dataset of 50k training and 10k testing pairs on $128\times128$ grids (with natural $[-1,1]$ amplitude scaling), the best trained model attains a mean absolute error (MAE) of approximately \textbf{0.23988159} on the full test set, with a sample-wise standard deviation of about \textbf{0.00266345}. The results demonstrate stable inversion, accurate recovery of interfacial structure, and robustness to high-frequency noise in the initial data.

Modeling change in public sentiment with nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations

This is a brief "proof of concept" article that shows nonlocal diffusion is well suited to the study of pattern formation and the particular application of public sentiment. We use a nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation to model the evolution of public sentiment in a population that interacts with other individuals. We employ a pseudo-random convolution kernel as a symmetric matrix of lognormally distributed values. This kernel models the influence of individuals when interacting with others. Change in sentiment emerges and may converge to a polarized state. Other more complicated states occur whereby a mixed polarization emerges.

Weak Exponential Attractors for Coleman--Gurtin Equations with Dynamic Boundary Conditions Possessing Different Memory Kernels

The well-posedness of a generalized Coleman--Gurtin equation equipped with dynamic boundary conditions with memory was recently established by C.G. Gal and the author. Additionally, it was established by the author that the problem admits a finite dimensional global attractor and a robust family of exponential attractors in the case where singularly perturbed memory kernels defined on the interior of the domain and on the boundary of the domain coincide. In the present article we report advances concerning the asymptotic behavior of this heat transfer model when the memory kernels do {\em not} coincide. In this setting we obtain a weak exponential attractor whose basin of attraction is the entire phase space, that is, a finite dimensional exponentially attracting compact set in the weak topology of the phase space. This result completes an analysis of the finite dimensional attractors for the generalized Coleman--Gurtin equation equipped with dynamic boundary conditions with memory.

Global existence of weak solutions for strongly damped wave equations with nonlinear boundary conditions and balanced potentials

We demonstrate the global existence of weak solutions to a class of semilinear strongly damped wave equations possessing nonlinear hyperbolic dynamic boundary conditions. Our work assumes $(-Δ_W)^θ\partial_tu$ with $θ\in[\frac{1}{2},1)$ and where $Δ_W$ is the Wentzell-Laplacian. Hence, the associated linear operator admits a compact resolvent. A balance condition is assumed to hold between the nonlinearity defined on the interior of the domain and the nonlinearity on the boundary. This allows for arbitrary (supercritical) polynomial growth on each potential, as well as mixed dissipative/anti-dissipative behavior. Moreover, the nonlinear function defined on the interior of the domain is assumed to be only $C^0$.

Attractors for Damped Semilinear Wave Equations with Singularly Perturbed Acoustic Boundary Conditions

Under consideration is the damped semilinear wave equation \[ u_{tt}+u_t-Δu+u+f(u)=0 \] in a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ subject to an acoustic boundary condition with a singular perturbation, which we term "massless acoustic perturbation," \[ \epδ_{tt}+δ_t+δ= -u_t\quad\text{for}\quad \ep\in[0,1]. \] By adapting earlier work by S. Frigeri, we prove the existence of a family of global attractors for each $\ep\in[0,1]$. We also establish the optimal regularity for the global attractors, as well as the existence of an exponential attractor, for each $\ep\in[0,1].$ The later result insures the global attractors possess finite (fractal) dimension, however, we cannot yet guarantee that this dimension is independent of the perturbation parameter $\ep.$ The family of global attractors are upper-semicontinuous with respect to the perturbation parameter $\ep$, a result which follows by an application of a new abstract result also contained in this article. Finally, we show that it is possible to obtain the global attractors using weaker assumptions on the nonlinear term $f$, however, in that case, the optimal regularity, the finite dimensionality, and the upper-semicontinuity of the global attractors does not necessarily hold.

Upper-semicontinuity of the global attractors for a class of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations

The aim of this work is to examine the upper-semicontinuity properties of the family of global attractors admitted by a non-isothermal viscous relaxation of some nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations. We prove that the family of global attractors is upper-semicontinuous as the perturbation parameters vanish. Additionally, under suitable assumptions, we prove that the family of global attractors satisfies a further upper-semicontinuity type estimate whereby the difference between trajectories of the relaxation problem and the limit isothermal non-viscous problem is explicitly controlled, in the topology of the relaxation problem, in terms of the relaxation parameters.

Regular global attractors for wave equations with degenerate memory

We consider the wave equation with degenerate viscoelastic dissipation recently examined in Cavalcanti, Fatori, and Ma, Attractors for wave equations with degenerate memory, J. Differential Equations (2016). Under some additional assumptions, we show the existence of a compact absorbing set. This result provides further regularity for the global attractor and shows that it consists of regular solutions.

Well-posedness and Global Attractors for Viscous Fractional Cahn-Hilliard Equations with Memory

We examine a viscous Cahn-Hilliard phase-separation model with memory and where the chemical potential possesses a nonlocal fractional Laplacian operator. The existence of global weak solutions is proven using a Galerkin approximation scheme. A continuous dependence estimate provides uniqueness of the weak solutions and also serves to define a precompact pseudometric. This, in addition to the existence of a bounded absorbing set, shows that the associated semigroup of solution operators admits a compact connected global attractor in the weak energy phase space. The minimal assumptions on the nonlinear potential allow for arbitrary polynomial growth.

Attractors for Damped Semilinear Wave Equations with a Robin--Acoustic Boundary Perturbation

Under consideration is the damped semilinear wave equation \[ u_{tt}+u_t-Δu + u + f(u)=0 \] on a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with a perturbation parameter $\varepsilon>0$ occurring in an acoustic boundary condition, limiting ($\varepsilon=0$) to a Robin boundary condition. With minimal assumptions on the nonlinear term $f$, the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions is shown for each $\varepsilon\in[0,1]$. Also, the existence of a family of global attractors is shown to exist. After proving a general result concerning the upper-semicontinuity of a one-parameter family of sets, the result is applied to the family of global attractors. Because of the complicated boundary conditions for the perturbed problem, fractional powers of the Laplacian are not well-defined; moreover, because of the restrictive growth assumptions on $f$, the family of global attractors is obtained from the asymptotic compactness method developed by J. Ball for generalized semiflows. With more relaxed assumptions on the nonlinear term $f$, we are able to show the global attractors possess optimal regularity and prove the existence of an exponential attractor, for each $\varepsilon\in[0,1].$ This result insures that the corresponding global attractor inherits finite (fractal) dimension, however, the dimension is {\em{not}} necessarily uniform in $\varepsilon$.

Robust Exponential Attractors for Coleman--Gurtin Equations with Dynamic Boundary Conditions Possessing Memory

The well-posedness of a generalized Coleman--Gurtin equation equipped with dynamic boundary conditions with memory was recently established by the author with C.G. Gal. In this article we report advances concerning the asymptotic behavior and stability of this heat transfer model. For the model under consideration, we obtain a family of exponential attractors that is robust/Hölder continuous with respect to a perturbation parameter occurring in a singularly perturbed memory kernel. We show that the basin of attraction of these exponential attractors is the entire phase space. The existence of (finite dimensional) global attractors follows. The results are obtained by assuming the nonlinear terms defined on the interior of the domain and on the boundary satisfy standard dissipation assumptions. Also, we work under a crucial assumption that dictates the memory response in the interior of the domain matches that on the boundary.

Exponential Decay Results for Semilinear Parabolic PDE with $C^0$ Potentials: A "Mean Value" Approach

The asymptotic behavior of some semilinear parabolic PDEs is analyzed by means of a "mean value" property. This property allows us to determine, by means of appropriate {\em{a priori}} estimates, some exponential decay results for suitable global solutions. We also apply the method to investigate a well-known finite time blow-up result. An application is given to a one-dimensional semilinear parabolic PDE with boundary degeneracy. Our results shed further light onto the problem of determining initial data for which the corresponding solution is guaranteed to exponentially decay to zero or blow-up in finite time.

Attractors for Strongly Damped Wave Equations with Nonlinear Hyperbolic Dynamic Boundary Conditions

We establish the well-posedness of a strongly damped semilinear wave equation equipped with nonlinear hyperbolic dynamic boundary conditions. Results are carried out with the presence of a parameter distinguishing whether the underlying operator is analytic, $α>0$, or only of Gevrey class, $α=0$. We establish the existence of a global attractor for each $α\in[0,1],$ and we show that the family of global attractors is upper-semicontinuous as $α\rightarrow0.$ Furthermore, for each $α\in[0,1]$, we show the existence of a weak exponential attractor. A weak exponential attractor is a finite dimensional compact set in the weak topology of the phase space. This result insures the corresponding global attractor also possess finite fractal dimension in the weak topology; moreover, the dimension is independent of the perturbation parameter $α$. In both settings, attractors are found under minimal assumptions on the nonlinear terms.

Coleman-Gurtin type equations with dynamic boundary conditions

We present a new formulation and generalization of the classical theory of heat conduction with or without fading memory which includes the usual heat equation subject to a dynamic boundary condition as a special case. We investigate the well-posedness of systems which consist of Coleman-Gurtin type equations subject to dynamic boundary conditions, also with memory. Nonlinear terms are defined on the interior of the domain and on the boundary and subject to either classical dissipation assumptions, or to a nonlinear balance condition in the sense of [11]. Additionally, we do not assume that the interior and the boundary share the same memory kernel.

Hyperbolic Relaxation of Reaction Diffusion Equations with Dynamic Boundary Conditions

Under consideration is the hyperbolic relaxation of a semilinear reaction-diffusion equation on a bounded domain, subject to a dynamic boundary condition. We also consider the limit parabolic problem with the same dynamic boundary condition. Each problem is well-posed in a suitable phase space where the global weak solutions generate a Lipschitz continuous semiflow which admits a bounded absorbing set. We prove the existence of a family of global attractors of optimal regularity. After fitting both problems into a common framework, a proof of the upper-semicontinuity of the family of global attractors is given as the relaxation parameter goes to zero. Finally, we also establish the existence of exponential attractors.
