Gutzwiller Wave-Function Solution for Anderson Lattice Model: Emerging Universal Regimes of Heavy Quasiparticle States

The recently proposed diagrammatic expansion (DE) technique for the full Gutzwiller wave function (GWF) is applied to the Anderson lattice model (ALM). This approach allows for a systematic evaluation of the expectation values with GWF in the finite dimensional systems. It introduces results extending in an essential manner those obtained by means of standard Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) scheme which is variationally exact only in infinite dimensions. Within the DE-GWF approach we discuss principal paramagnetic properties of ALM and their relevance to heavy fermion systems. We demonstrate the formation of an effective, narrow $f$-band originating from atomic $f$-electron states and subsequently interpret this behavior as a mutual intersite $f$-electron coherence; a combined effect of both the hybridization and the Coulomb repulsion. Such feature is absent on the level of GA which is equivalent to the zeroth order of our expansion. Formation of the hybridization- and electron-concentration-dependent narrow effective $f$-band rationalizes common assumption of such dispersion of $f$ levels in the phenomenological modeling of the band structure of CeCoIn$_5$. Moreover, we show that the emerging $f$-electron coherence leads in a natural manner to three physically distinct regimes within a single model, that are frequently discussed for 4$f$- or 5$f$- electron compounds as separate model situations. We identify these regimes as: (i) mixed-valence regime, (ii) Kondo-insulator border regime, and (iii) Kondo-lattice limit when the $f$-electron occupancy is very close to the $f$ electrons half-filling, $\langle\hat n_{f}\rangle\rightarrow1$. The non-Landau features of emerging correlated quantum liquid state are stressed.

Properties of an almost localized Fermi liquid in applied magnetic field revisited: Statistically consistent Gutzwiller approach

We discuss the Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field and analyze the properties of neutral spin-1/2 fermions within the so-called statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation (SGA). The magnetization curve reproduces in a semiquantitative manner the experimental data for liquid 3 He in the regime of moderate correlations and in the presence of small number of vacant cells, modeled by a non-half filled-band situation, when a small number of vacancies (up to 5%) is introduced in the virtual fcc lattice. We also present the results for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat, in which a metamagnetic-like behavior is also singled out in a non-half-filled band case.

Bound-magnetic-polaron molecule in diluted magnetic semiconductors

We formulate a complete microscopic theory of a coupled pair of bound magnetic polarons, the bound-magnetic-polaron molecule (BMPM) in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) by taking into account both a proper two-body nature of the impurity-electron wave function and within the general spin-rotation-invariant approach to the electronic states. We also take into account both the Heisenberg and the antiferromagnetic kinetic-exchange interactions, as well as the ferromagnetic coupling within the common spin BMPM cloud. The thermodynamic fluctuations of the spin cloud within the polaron effective Bohr radius of each polaron are taken as Gaussian.

Unconventional superconducting phases in a correlated two-dimensional Fermi gas of nonstandard quasiparticles: a simple model

We discuss a detailed phase diagram and other microscopic characteristics on the applied magnetic field - temperature (H_a-T) plane for a simple model of correlated fluid represented by a two-dimensional (2D) gas of heavy quasiparticles with masses dependent on the spin direction and the effective field generated by the electron correlations. The consecutive transitions between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases are either continuous or discontinuous, depending on the values of H_a and T. In the latter case, weak metamagnetic transitions occur at the BCS-FFLO boundary. We single out two different FFLO phases, as well as a reentrant behaviour of one of them at high fields. The results are compared with those for ordinary Landau quasiparticles in order to demonstrate the robustness of the FFLO states against the BCS state for the case with spin-dependent masses (SDM). We believe that the mechanism of FFLO stabilization by SDM is generic: other high-field low-temperature (HFLT) superconducting phases benefit from SDM as well.

Magnetoelectric correlations in BiMnO$_3$ whithin Landau theory: comparison with experiment

We discuss a simple phenomenological Landau theory of phase transitions with two coupled single-component order parameters and compare the results with available experimental data. The model corresponds to the case of a ferroic system, in which ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions originally occur at temperatures $T_M$ and $T_f$, respectively. For $T_f>T_M$ the magnetoelectric coupling strongly renormalizes the magnetic transition temperature, $T_M\to T_{RM}$ (with $T_{RM}>>T_M$), as well as generates an additional anomaly in ferroelectric subsystem $T_{RM}$. Full susceptibility tensor has also been determined. The concept of \textit{Arrot plot} is replaced by the \textit{Arrot planes} which appear when both types of order coexist. The results are in good overall agreement with experimental data for the ferroelectromagnetic BiMnO$_3$. We also estimate the contribution of Gaussian fluctuations of both order parameters, that lead to corrections to the mean-field specific heat. Those corrections are still insufficient even though other quantities agree quite well with experiment. We calculate the temperature dependence of the coherence length for both types of order as well.

Superconductivity in an almost localized Fermi liquid of quasiparticles with spin-dependent masses and effective field induced by electron correlations

Paired state of nonstandard quasiparticles is analyzed in detail in two model situations. Namely, we consider the Cooper-pair bound state and the condensed phase of an almost localized Fermi liquid (ALFL) composed of quasiparticles in a narrow-band with the spin-dependent masses (SDM) and an effective field, both introduced earlier and induced by strong electronic correlations. Each of these novel characteristics are calculated in a self-consistent manner. We analyze the bound states as a function of Cooper-pair momentum q in applied magnetic field in the strongly Pauli limiting case (i.e. when the orbital effects of applied magnetic field are disregarded). The spin-direction dependence of the effective mass makes the quasiparticles comprising Cooper pair spin distinguishable in the quantum mechanical sense, whereas the condensed gas of pairs may still be regarded as composed of identical entities. The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) condensed phase of moving pairs is by far more robust in the applied field for the case with spin-dependent masses than in the situation with equal masses of quasiparticles. Relative stability of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) vs. FFLO phase is analyzed in detail on temperature - applied field plane. Although our calculations are carried out for a model situation, we can conclude that the spin-dependent masses should play an important role in stabilizing high-field low-temperature (HFLT) unconventional superconducting phases (FFLO being an instance) in systems such as CeCoIn_5, organic metals, and possibly others.

t-J model then and now: A personal perspective from the pioneering times

In this overview I sketch briefly the path to the so-called {\em t-J model} derived for the first time 30 years ago and provide its original meaning within the theory of strongly correlated magnetic metals with a non-Fermi (non-Landau) liquid ground state. An emergence of the concept of {\em real space pairing}, is discussed in a historical prospective. A generalization of this model to the many-orbital situation is briefly discussed. The emphasis is put on didactical exposition of ideas, as they were transformed into mathematical language. The concept of {\em hybrid pairing} is introduced in the same context at the end.

Partial localization of correlated electrons: spin dependent masses, saturated ferromagnetism, and effective s-d model

We determine the localization threshold in a partially filled and orbitally degenerate model of correlated electrons. Particular emphasis is put on a non-integer band filling, when the system decomposes into the localized and the itinerant subsystems; this situation is described by an effective s-d model. A simultaneous transition to the ferromagnetic state is discussed as driven by the Hund's rule coupling. Dependence of the quasiparticle mass on the spin direction appears naturally in the ferromagnetic phase and is attributed to the electron correlation effects, as is also a metamagnetic transition in an applied field. Although the main results have been obtained within the saddle point slave-boson approach, their qualitative features are discussed in general terms, i.e. as a transition from quantum-mechanical indistinguishability of particles to the two-component situation. A comparison with the situation for the orbitally nondegenerate band is also briefly mentioned.

Electronic structure and parity effects in correlated nanosystems

We discuss the spectral, transport and magnetic properties of quantum nanowires composed of N\leq 13 atoms and containing either even or odd numbers of valence electrons. In our approach we combine Exact Diagonalization and Ab Initio calculations (EDABI method). The analysis is performed as a function of the interatomic distance. The momentum distribution differs drastically for those obtained for even N with those for odd N, whereas the Drude weight evolves smoothly. A role of boundary conditions is stressed.

Microwave absorption by the Josephson-junction network in a low field: A realistic model for ceramic high-temperature superconductor

We discuss the applied magnetic field dependence of the absorption of microwaves by a 3-dimensional array up to 30x30x30 Josephson junctions with random parameters including the resistivity, capacity and inductance of each junction. The numerical simulation results for the networks show characteristic microwave absorption anomalies observed in the ceramic samples of high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-x). We also provide a discussion of the absorption in simple analytical terms of Josephson loop instabilities.

Conductance of a double quantum dot with correlation-induced wave function renormalization

The zero-temperature conductance of diatomic molecule, modelled as a correlated double quantum dot attached to noninteracting leads is investigated. We utilize the Rejec-Ramsak formulas, relating the linear-response conductance to the ground-state energy dependence on magnetic flux within the framework of EDABI method, which combines exact diagonalization with ab initio calculations. The single-particle basis renormalization leads to a strong particle-hole asymmetry, of the conductance spectrum, absent in a standard parametrized model study. We also show, that the coupling to leads V=0.5t (t is the hopping integral) may provide the possibility for interatomic distance manipulation due to the molecule instability.

Fundamental properties, localization threshold, and the Tomonaga--Luttinger behavior of electrons in nanochains

We provide a fairly complete discussion of electronic properties of nanochains modelling the simplest quantum nanowires, within the recently proposed approach combining Exact Diagonalization in the Fock space with an Ab Initio calculations (EDABI method). In particular, the microscopic parameters of the second-quantized Hamiltonian are determined and the evolution of the system properties is traced in a systematic manner as a function of the interatomic distance (the lattice parameter, R). Both the many-particle ground state and the dynamical correlation functions are discussed within a single scheme. The principal physical results are: (i) the evolution of the electron momentum distribution and its analysis in terms of the Tomonaga-Luttinger scaling, (ii) the appearance of mixed metallic and insulating features partial localization) for the half-filled band case, (iii) the appearence of a universal renormalized dispersion relation of electron energy, which incorporates both the band-structure and the Hubbard-splitting features in the presence of electron interactions, and (iv) the transformation from a highly-conducting nanometalic state to the charge-ordered nanoinsulator in the quarter-filled case. The analysis is performed using an adjustable Gaussian 1s-like basis set composing the Wannier functions, as well as includes the long-range Coulomb interaction.

What is between Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein Statistics?

We overwiev the properties of a quantum gas of particles with the intermediate statistics defined by Haldane. Although this statistics has no direct connection to the symmetry of the multiparticle wave function, the statistical distribution function interpolates continuously between the Fermi-Dirac and the Bose-Einstein limits. We present an explicit solution of the transcendental equation for the didtribution function in a general case, as well as determine the thermodynamic properties in both low- and high-temperature limits.

Coexistence of spin-triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism induced by the local Hund's rule exchange

We characterize the coexistence of itinerant ferromagnetism and spin-triplet superconductivity within a single mechanism involving local (Hund's rule) exchange among $d$ electrons. The ratio of transition temperatures and the spin anisotropy of the superconducting gap is estimated for $ZrZn_2$. The $A$ phase is stable in very low applied and molecular fields, whereas the $A1$ phases persists in higher fields. A small residual magnetic moment is present below the Stoner threshold in the superconducting phase.

Electron localization in one dimension obtained from combined exact diagonalization - ab initio approach

Exact ground-state properties are presented by combining the diagonalization in the Fock space (and taking all hopping integrals and all two-site interactions) with the ab initio optimization of the Wannier functions. Electrons are essentially localized for the interatomic distance R~2A for s-like states, when the quasiparticle mass is divergent. The momentum distribution dispersion is proposed to define the localization order parameter. Dimerization and zero-point energies are also discussed. The method provides convergent results for N>=8 atoms.

Electronic states, Mott localization, electron-lattice coupling, and dimerization for correlated one-dimensional systems. II

We discuss physical properties of strongly correlated electron states for a linear chain obtained with the help of the recently proposed new method combining the exact diagonalization in the Fock space with an ab initio readjustment of the single-particle orbitals in the correlated state. The method extends the current discussion of the correlated states since the properties are obtained with varying lattice spacing. The finite system of N atoms evolves with the increasing interatomic distance from a Fermi-liquid-like state into the Mott insulator. The criteria of the localization are discussed in detail since the results are already convergent for N>=8. During this process the Fermi-Dirac distribution gets smeared out, the effective band mass increases by ~50%, and the spin-spin correlation functions reduce to those for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Values of the microscopic parameters such as the hopping and the kinetic-exchange integrals, as well as the magnitude of both intra- and inter-atomic Coulomb and exchange interactions are calculated. We also determine the values of various local electron-lattice couplings and show that they are comparable to the kinetic exchange contribution in the strong-correlation limit. The magnitudes of the dimerization and the zero-point motion are also discussed. Our results provide a canonical example of a tractable strongly correlated system with a precise, first-principle description as a function of interatomic distance of a model system involving all hopping integrals, all pair-site interactions, and the exact one-band Wannier functions.

Spin-triplet superconducting pairing due to local (Hund's rule, Dirac) exchange

We discuss general implications of the local spin-triplet pairing among fermions induced by local ferromagnetic exchange, example of which is the Hund's rule coupling. The quasiparticle energy and their wave function are determined for the three principal phases with the gap, which is momentum independent. We utilize the Bogolyubov-Nambu-De Gennes approach, which in the case of triplet pairing in the two-band case leads to the four-components wave function. Both gapless modes and those with an isotropic gap appear in the quasiparticle spectrum. A striking analogy with the Dirac equation is briefly explored. This type of pairing is relevant to relativistic fermions as well, since it reflects the fundamental discrete symmetry-particle interchange. A comparison with the local interband spin-singlet pairing is also made.

A Simple Treatment of Metal-Insulator Transition: Effects of Degeneracy, Temperature and Applied Magnetic Field

A simple slave-boson representation combined with the Hartree-Fock approximation for the Hund's rule coupling is introduced for a doubly degenerate narrow band, which bears a direct relation to that introduced previously in the nondegenerate case. Namely, one keeps the fermion representation of the spin operator to recover properly the energy of fermionic quasiparticles in the presence of an applied magnetic field. A simple two-parameter mean-field analysis of the metamagnetism is provided, with the emphasis on the role of the Hund's rule coupling. We also analyse the appearance of the spin-split effective masses in the applied field and for nonhalf-filled-band situation. The Mott-Hubbard boundary is determined at nonzero temperature (T>0); it shifts towards lower interactions with increasing T and the field signalling the precursory localization effects, explicitly exhibited in the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility calculated in the Appendix. We also formulate a more general two-parameter rotationally invariant approach for an arbitrary degeneracy d of equivalent orbitals and show that the Mott-Hubbard transition at zero temperature and at any integer filling n>1 is always discontinuous. A brief overview of experimental situation is also made.
