Covariant KSGNS construction and quantum instruments

We study positive kernels on $X\times X$, where $X$ is a set equipped with an action of a group, and taking values in the set of $\mathcal A$-sesquilinear forms on a (not necessarily Hilbert) module over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$. These maps are assumed to be covariant with respect to the group action on $X$ and a representation of the group in the set of invertible ($\mathcal A$-linear) module maps. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for extremality of such kernels in certain convex subsets of positive covariant kernels. Our focus is mainly on a particular example of these kernels: a completely positive (CP) covariant map for which we obtain a covariant minimal dilation (or KSGNS construction). We determine the extreme points of the set of normalized covariant CP maps and, as a special case, study covariant quantum observables and instruments whose value space is a transitive space of a unimodular type-I group. As an example, we discuss the case of instruments that are covariant with respect to a square-integrable representation.

One-to-one mapping between steering and joint measurability problems

Quantum steering refers to the possibility for Alice to remotely steer Bob's state by performing local measurements on her half of a bipartite system. Two necessary ingredients for steering are entanglement and incompatibility of Alice's measurements. In particular, it has been recently proven that for the case of pure states of maximal Schmidt rank the problem of steerability for Bob's assemblage is equivalent to the problem of joint measurability for Alice's observables. We show that such an equivalence holds in general, namely, the steerability of any assemblage can always be formulated as a joint measurability problem, and vice versa. We use this connection to introduce steering inequalities from joint measurability criteria and develop quantifiers for the incompatibility of measurements.

Minimal normal measurement models of quantum instruments

In this work, we study the minimal normal measurement models of quantum instruments. We show that usually the apparatus' Hilbert space in such a model is unitarily isomorphic to the minimal Stinespring dilation space of the instrument. However, if the Hilbert space of the system is infinite dimensional and the multiplicities of the outcomes of the associated observable (POVM) are all infinite then this may not be the case. In these pathological cases, the minimal apparatus' Hilbert space is shown to be unitarily isomorphic to the instrument's minimal dilation space augmented by one extra dimension. We also point out errors in earlier papers of one of the authors (J-P.P.).

Compatibility properties of extreme quantum observables

Recently a problem concerning the equivalence of joint measurability and coexistence of quantum observables was solved [15]. In this paper we generalize two known joint measurability results from sharp observables to the class of extreme observables and study relationships between coexistence, joint measurability, and post-processing of quantum observables when an extreme observable is involved. We also discuss another notion of compatibility and provide a counterexample separating this from the former notions.

Operator integrals and sesquilinear forms

We consider various systematic ways of defining unbounded operator valued integrals of complex functions with respect to (mostly) positive operator measures and positive sesquilinear form measures, and investigate their relationships to each other in view of the extension theory of symmetric operators. We demonstrate the associated mathematical subtleties with a physically relevant example involving moment operators of the momentum observable of a particle confined to move on a bounded interval.

On measurements of the canonical phase observable

Measurements of single-mode phase observables are studied in the spirit of the quantum theory of measurement. We determine the minimal measurement models of phase observables and consider methods of measuring such observables by using a double homodyne detector. We show that, in principle, the canonical phase distribution of the signal state can be measured via double homodyne detection by first processing the state using a two-mode unitary channel.

When do pieces determine the whole? Extremal marginals of a completely positive map

We will consider completely positive maps defined on tensor products of von Neumann algebras and taking values in the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space and particularly certain convex subsets of the set of such maps. We show that when one of the marginal maps of such a map is an extremal point, then the marginals uniquely determine the map. We will further prove that when both of the marginals are extremal, then the whole map is extremal. We show that this general result is the common source of several well-known results dealing with, e.g., jointly measurable observables. We also obtain new insight especially in the realm of quantum instruments and their marginal observables and channels.

Complete quantum measurements break entanglement

Complete measurement of a quantum observable (POVM) is a measurement of the maximally refined version of the POVM. Complete measurements give information on multiplicities of measurement outcomes and can be viewed as state preparation procedures. Moreover, any observable can be measured completely. In this Letter, we show that a complete measurement breaks entanglement completely between the system, ancilla and their environment. Finally, consequences to the quantum Zeno effect and complete position measurements are discussed.

Complete measurements of quantum observables

We define a complete measurement of a quantum observable (POVM) as a measurement of the maximally refined version of the POVM. Complete measurements give information from the multiplicities of the measurement outcomes and can be viewed as state preparation procedures. We show that any POVM can be measured completely by using sequential measurements or maximally refinable instruments. Moreover, the ancillary space of a complete measurement can be chosen to be minimal.

Completely positive maps on modules, instruments, extremality problems, and applications to physics

Convex sets of completely positive maps and positive semidefinite kernels are considered in the most general context of modules over $C^*$-algebras and a complete charaterization of their extreme points is obtained. As a byproduct, we determine extreme quantum instruments, preparations, channels, and extreme autocorrelation functions. Various applications to quantum information and measurement theories are given. The structure of quantum instruments is analyzed thoroughly.

Generalized Coherent States and Extremal Positive Operator Valued Measures

We present a correspondence between positive operator valued measures (POVMs) and sets of generalized coherent states. Positive operator valued measures describe quantum observables and, similarly to quantum states, also quantum observables can be mixed. We show how the formalism of generalized coherent states leads to a useful characterization of extremal POVMs. We prove that covariant phase space observables related to squeezed states are extremal, while the ones related to number states are not extremal.

Quantum measurements on finite dimensional systems: relabeling and mixing

Concentrating on finite dimensional systems, we show that one can limit to extremal rank-1 POVMs if two simple procedures of mixing and relabeling are permitted. We demonstrate that any finite outcome POVM can be obtained from extremal rank-1 POVMs with these two procedures. In particular, extremal POVMs with higher rank are just relabelings of extremal rank-1 POVMs and their structure is therefore clarified.

Extreme commutative quantum observables are sharp

It is well known that, in the description of quantum observables, positive operator valued measures (POVMs) generalize projection valued measures (PVMs) and they also turn out be more optimal in many tasks. We show that a commutative POVM is an extreme point in the convex set of all POVMs if and only if it is a PVM. This results implies that non-commutativity is a necessary ingredient to overcome the limitations of PVMs.

Extreme Covariant Quantum Observables in the Case of an Abelian Symmetry Group and a Transitive Value Space

We represent quantum observables as POVMs (normalized positive operator valued measures) and consider convex sets of observables which are covariant with respect to a unitary representation of a locally compact Abelian symmetry group $G$. The value space of such observables is a transitive $G$-space. We characterize the extreme points of covariant observables and also determine the covariant extreme points of the larger set of all quantum observables. The results are applied to position, position difference and time observables.

Balancing efficiencies by squeezing in realistic eight-port homodyne detection

We address measurements of covariant phase observables (CPOs) by means of realistic eight-port homodyne detectors. We do not assume equal quantum efficiencies for the four photodetectors and investigate the conditions under which the measurement of a CPO may be achieved. We show that balancing the efficiencies using an additional beam splitter allows us to achieve a CPO at the price of reducing the overall effective efficiency, and prove that it is never a smearing of the ideal CPO achievable with unit quantum efficiency. An alternative strategy based on employing a squeezed vacuum as a parameter field is also suggested, which allows one to increase the overall efficiency in comparison to the passive case using only a moderate amount of squeezing. Both methods are suitable for implementantion with current technology.

Modules, completely positive maps, and a generalized KSGNS construction

A very general KSGNS type dilation theorem in the context of right (not necessarily Hilbert) modules over $C^*$-algebras is presented. The proof uses Kolmogorov type decompositions for positive-definite kernels with values in spaces of sesquilinear maps. More specific functional analytic applications are obtained by adding assumptions.

Complete Characterization of Pure Quantum Measurements and Quantum Channels

We give a complete characterization for pure quantum measurements, i.e., for POVMs which are extremals in the convex set of all POVMs. Such measurements are free from classical noise. The characterization is valid both in discrete and continuous cases, and also in the case of an infinite Hilbert space. We show that sharp measurements are clean, i.e. they cannot be irreversibly connected to another POVMs via quantum channels and thus they are free from any additional quantum noise. We exhibit an example which demonstrates that this result could also be approximately true for pure measurements.
