Inefficient eight-port homodyne detection and covariant phase space observables

We consider the quantum optical eight-port homodyne detection scheme in the case that each of the associated photon detectors is assigned with a different quantum efficiency. We give a mathematically rigorous and strictly quantum mechanical proof of the fact that the measured observable (positive operator measure) in the high-amplitude limit is a smearing of the covariant phase space observable related to the ideal measurement. The result is proved for an arbitary parameter field. Furthermore, we investigate some properties of the measured observable. In particular, we show that the state distinguishing power of the observable is not affected by detector inefficiencies.

Extreme phase and rotated quadrature measurements

We determine the extreme points of the convex set of covariant phase observables. Such extremals describe the best phase parameter measurements of laser light - the best in the sense that they are free from classical randomness due to fluctuations in the measuring procedure. We also characterize extreme fuzzy rotated quadratures.

Density matrix reconstruction from displaced photon number distributions

We consider state reconstruction from the measurement statistics of phase space observables generated by photon number states. The results are obtained by inverting certain infinite matrices. In particular, we obtain reconstruction formulas, each of which involves only a single phase space observable.

The canonical phase measurement is pure

We show that the canonical phase measurement is pure in the sense that the corresponding positive operator valued measure (POVM) is extremal in the convex set of all POVMs. This means that the canonical phase measurement cannot be interpreted as a noisy measurement, even if it is not a projection valued measure.

State reconstruction formulas for the s-distributions and quadratures

We consider the method of infinite matrix inversion in the context of quantum state reconstruction. Using this method we give rigorous proofs for reconstruction formulas for the Cahill-Glauber s-parametrized distributions and the rotated quadrature distributions. We also demonstrate how to construct the s-distributions from the quadrature data.

Quantum tomography, phase space observables, and generalized Markov kernels

We construct a generalized Markov kernel which transforms the observable associated with the homodyne tomography into a covariant phase space observable with a regular kernel state. Illustrative examples are given in the cases of a 'Schrodinger cat' kernel state and the Cahill-Glauber s-parametrized distributions. Also we consider an example of a kernel state when the generalized Markov kernel cannot be constructed.

Continuous variable tomographic measurements

Using a recent result of Albini et al. to represent quantum homodyne tomography in terms of a single observable (as a normalized positive operator measure) we construct a generalized Markov kernel which transforms (the measurement outcome statistics of) this observable into (the measurement outcome statistics of) a covariant phase space observable. We also consider the inverse question. Finally, we add some remarks on the quantum theoretical justification of the experimental implementations of these observables in terms of balanced homodyne and 8-port detection techniques, respectively.

Positive sesquilinear form measures and generalized eigenvalue expansions

Positive operator measures (with values in the space of bounded operators on a Hilbert space) and their generalizations, mainly positive sesquilinear form measures, are considered with the aim of providing a framework for their generalized eigenvalue type expansions. Though there are formal similarities with earlier approaches to special cases of the problem, the paper differs e.g. from standard rigged Hilbert space constructions and avoids the introduction of nuclear spaces. The techniques are predominantly measure theoretic and hence the Hilbert spaces involved are separable. The results range from a Naimark type dilation result to direct integral representations and a fairly concrete generalized eigenvalue expansion for unbounded normal operators.

Families index theorem in supersymmetric WZW model and twisted K-theory: The SU(2) case

The construction of twisted K-theory classes on a compact Lie group is reviewed using the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten model on a cylinder. The Quillen superconnection is introduced for a family of supercharges parametrized by a compact Lie group and the Chern character is explicitly computed in the case of SU(2). For large euclidean time, the character form is localized on a D-brane.
