Minkowski inequalities and constrained inverse curvature flows in warped spaces

This paper deals with locally constrained inverse curvature flows in a broad class of Riemannian warped spaces. For a certain class of such flows we prove long time existence and smooth convergence to a radial coordinate slice. In the case of two-dimensional surfaces and a suitable speed, these flows enjoy two monotone quantities. In such cases new Minkowski type inequalities are the consequence. In higher dimensions we use the inverse mean curvature flow to obtain new Minkowski inequalities when the ambient radial Ricci curvature is constantly negative.

Orlicz-Minkowski flows

We study the long-time existence and behavior for a class of anisotropic non-homogeneous Gauss curvature flows whose stationary solutions, if exist, solve the regular Orlicz-Minkowski problems. As an application, we obtain old and new results for the regular even Orlicz-Minkowski problems; the corresponding $L_p$ version is the even $L_p$-Minkowski problem for $p>-n-1$. Moreover, employing a parabolic approximation method, we give new proofs of some of the existence results for the general Orlicz-Minkowski problems; the $L_p$ versions are the even $L_p$-Minkowski problem for $p>0$ and the $L_p$-Minkowski problem for $p>1$. In the final section, we use a curvature flow with no global term to solve a class of $L_p$-Christoffel-Minkowski type problems.

Extrinsic curvature flows and applications

These notes arose from a mini lecture series the author gave at the Early Career Researchers Workshop on Geometric Analysis and PDEs, held in January 2020 at the Matrix institute of the University of Melbourne. We discussed some classical aspects of expanding curvature flows and obtained first applications. In these notes we will give a detailed account on what was covered during the lectures.

Concavity of solutions to degenerate elliptic equations on the sphere

We prove the concavity of classical solutions to a wide class of degenerate elliptic differential equations on strictly convex domains of the unit sphere. The proof employs a suitable two-point maximum principle, a technique which originates in works of Korevaar, Kawohl and Kennington for equations on Euclidean domains. We emphasize that no differentiability of the differential operator is needed, but only some monotonicity and concavity properties.

The Minkowski inequality in de Sitter space

The classical Minkowski inequality in the Euclidean space provides a lower bound on the total mean curvature of a hypersurface in terms of the surface area, which is optimal on round spheres. In this paper we employ a locally constrained inverse mean curvature flow to prove a properly defined analogue in the Lorentzian de Sitter space.

Negatively Curved Three-Manifolds, Hyperbolic Metrics, Isometric Embeddings In Minkowski Space And The Cross Curvature Flow

This short note is a mostly expository article examining negatively curved three-manifolds. We look at some rigidity properties related to isometric embeddings into Minkowski space. We also review the Cross Curvature Flow (XCF) as a tool to study the space of negatively curved metrics on hyperbolic three-manifolds, the largest and least understood class of model geometries in Thurston's Geometrisation. The relationship between integrability and embedability yields interesting insights, and we show that solutions with fixed Einstein volume are precisely the integrable solutions, answering a question posed by Chow and Hamilton when they introduced the XCF.

Asymptotic estimates for the Willmore flow with small energy

Kuwert and Schätzle showed in 2001 that the Willmore flow converges to a standard round sphere, if the initial energy is small. In this situation, we prove stability estimates for the barycenter and the quadratic moment of the surface. Moreover, in codimension one we obtain stability bounds for the enclosed volume and averaged mean curvature. As direct applications, we recover a quasi-rigidity estimate due to De Lellis and Müller (2006) and an estimate for the isoperimetric deficit by Röger and Schätzle (2012), whose original proofs used different methods.

Li-Yau gradient estimates for curvature flows in positively curved manifolds

We prove differential Harnack inequalities for flows of strictly convex hypersurfaces by powers $p$, $0<p<1$, of the mean curvature in Einstein manifolds with a positive lower bound on the sectional curvature. We assume that this lower bound is sufficiently large compared to the derivatives of the curvature tensor of the ambient space and that the mean curvature of the initial hypersurface is sufficiently large compared to the ambient geometry. We also obtain some new Harnack inequalities for more general curvature flows in the sphere, as well as a monotonicity estimate for the mean curvature flow in non-negatively curved, locally symmetric spaces.

Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for convex hypersurfaces with free boundary in a ball

In this paper we first introduce quermassintegrals for free boundary hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean unit ball. Then we solve some related isoperimetric type problems for convex free boundary hypersurfaces, which lead to new Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. In particular, for $n=2$ we obtain a Minkowski-type inequality and for $n=3$ we obtain an optimal Willmore-type inequality. To prove these estimates, we employ a specifically designed locally constrained inverse harmonic mean curvature flow with free boundary.

Expansion of pinched hypersurfaces of the Euclidean and hyperbolic space by high powers of curvature

We prove convergence results for expanding curvature flows in the Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The flow speeds have the form $F^{-p}$, where $p>1$ and $F$ is a positive, strictly monotone and 1-homogeneous curvature function. In particular this class includes the mean curvature $F=H$. We prove that a certain initial pinching condition is preserved and the properly rescaled hypersurfaces converge smoothly to the unit sphere. We show that an example due to Andrews-McCoy-Zheng can be used to construct strictly convex initial hypersurfaces, for which the inverse mean curvature flow to the power $p>1$ loses convexity, justifying the necessity to impose a certain pinching condition on the initial hypersurface.

A unified flow approach to smooth, even $L_p$-Minkowski problems

We study long-time existence and asymptotic behaviour for a class of anisotropic, expanding curvature flows. For this we adapt new curvature estimates, which were developed by Guan, Ren and Wang to treat some stationary prescribed curvature problems. As an application we give a unified flow approach to the existence of smooth, even $L_p$-Minkowski problems in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $p>-n-1.$

Inverse curvature flows in Riemannian warped products

The long-time existence and umbilicity estimates for compact, graphical solutions to expanding curvature flows are deduced in Riemannian warped products of a real interval with a compact fibre. Notably we do not assume the ambient manifold to be rotationally symmetric, nor the radial curvature to converge, nor a lower bound on the ambient sectional curvature. The inverse speeds are given by powers $p\leq 1$ of a curvature function satisfying few common properties.

Isotropic functions revisited

To a smooth and symmetric function $f$ defined on a symmetric open set $Γ\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and a real $n$-dimensional vector space $V$ we assign an associated operator function $F$ defined on an open subset $Ω\subset\mathcal{L}(V)$ of linear transformations of $V$, such that for each inner product $g$ on $V$, on the subspace $Σ_{g}(V)\subset\mathcal{L}(V)$ of $g$-selfadjoint operators, $F_{g}=F_{|Σ_{g}(V)}$ is the isotropic function associated to $f$, which means that $F_{g}(A)=f(\mathrm{EV}(A))$, where $\mathrm{EV}(A)$ denotes the ordered $n$-tuple of real eigenvalues of $A$. We extend some well known relations between the derivatives of $f$ and each $F_{g}$ to relations between $f$ and $F$. By means of an example we show that well known regularity properties of $F_{g}$ do not carry over to $F$.

Locally constrained inverse curvature flows

We consider inverse curvature flows in warped product manifolds, which are constrained subject to local terms of lower order, namely the radial coordinate and the generalized support function. Under various assumptions we prove longtime existence and smooth convergence to a coordinate slice. We apply this result to deduce a new Minkowski type inequality in the anti-de-Sitter Schwarzschild manifolds and a weighted isoperimetric type inequality in the hyperbolic space.

On the classification of ancient solutions to curvature flows on the sphere

We consider the evolution of hypersurfaces on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ by smooth functions of the Weingarten map. We introduce the notion of `quasi-ancient' solutions for flows that do not admit non-trivial, convex, ancient solutions. Such solutions are somewhat analogous to ancient solutions for flows such as the mean curvature flow, or 1-homogeneous flows. The techniques presented here allow us to prove that any convex, quasi-ancient solution of a curvature flow which satisfies a backwards in time uniform bound on mean curvature must be stationary or a family of shrinking geodesic spheres. The main tools are geometric, employing the maximum principle, a rigidity result in the sphere and an Alexandrov reflection argument. We emphasize that no homogeneity or convexity/concavity restrictions are placed on the speed, though we do also offer a short classification proof for several such restricted cases.

Harnack inequalities for curvature flows in Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds

We obtain Harnack estimates for a class of curvature flows in Riemannian manifolds of constant non-negative sectional curvature as well as in the Lorentzian Minkowski and de Sitter spaces. Furthermore, we prove a Harnack estimate with a bonus term for mean curvature flow in locally symmetric Riemannian Einstein manifold of non-negative sectional curvature. Using a concept of "duality" for strictly convex hypersurfaces, we also obtain a new type of inequalities, so-called "pseudo"-Harnack inequalities, for expanding flows in the sphere and in the hyperbolic space.

The inverse mean curvature flow in warped cylinders of non-positive radial curvature

We consider the inverse mean curvature flow in smooth Riemannian manifolds of the form $([R_{0},\infty)\times S^n,\bar{g})$ with metric $\bar{g}=dr^2+{\vartheta}^2(r)σ$ and non-positive radial sectional curvature. We prove, that for initial mean-convex graphs over $S^n$ the flow exists for all times and remains a graph over $S^{n}$. Under weak further assumptions on the ambient manifold, we prove optimal decay of the gradient and that the flow leaves become umbilic exponentially fast. We prove optimal $C^2$ estimates in case that the ambient pinching improves.
