A simplified finite volume lattice Boltzmann method for simulations of fluid flows from laminar to turbulent regime, Part I: Numerical framework and its application to laminar flow simulation

In this paper, a finite volume lattice Boltzmann method (FVLBM) based on cell-center unstructured girds is presented and full studied to simulate the incompressible laminar flows, which is simple modified from the cell-vertex unstructured girds FVLBM proposed by Stiebler et al. [Computers & Fluids, 2006, 35(8): 814-819]. Compared with other complex flux reconstruct methods, the computational cost of present scheme is little and can achieve second-order spatial accuracy, the temporal accuracy is adjustable depending on the temporal discretization methods. Different boundary conditions are illustrated and easy implement to the complex geometries. Four cases are testified to validate the present method, including one plate driven Couette flow for accuracy test, flow in the square cavity, flow over the single circular cylinder and more complex double circular cylinders. Numerical experiments show that the present scheme can use relatively few grid cells to simulate relatively higher Reynolds number flow, steady and unsteady flows, demonstrate the good capability of the present method.

A simplified finite volume lattice Boltzmann method for simulations of fluid flows from laminar to turbulent regime, Part II: Extension towards turbulent flow simulation

In this paper, the finite volume lattice Boltzmann method (FVLBM) on unstructured grid presented in Part I of this paper is extended to simulate the turbulent flows. To model the turbulent effect, the $k-ω$ SST turbulence model is incorporated into the present FVLBM framework and also is solved by the finite volume method. Based on the eddy viscosity hypothesis, the eddy viscosity is computed from the solution of k-ωSST model, and the total viscosity is modified by adding this eddy viscosity to the laminar (kinematic) viscosity given in the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision term. In order to enhance the computational efficiency, the three-stage second-order implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta method is used for temporal discretization and the time step can be larger one- or two-order of magnitude compared with explicit Euler forward scheme. Though the computational cost is increased, the finial computational efficiency is enhanced about one-order of magnitude and the good results also can be obtained at large time step through the test case of lid-driven cavity flow. Two turbulent flow cases are carried out to validate the present method, including flow over backward-facing step and flow around NACA0012 airfoil. Our numerical results are found to be in agreement with experimental data and numerical solutions, demonstrating applicability of the present FVLBM coupled with k-ωSST model to accurately predict the incompressible turbulent flows.

Investigation of antineutrino spectral anomaly with updated nuclear database

Recently, three successful antineutrino experiments (Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO) measured the neutrino mixing angle theta_13; however, significant discrepancies were found, both in the absolute flux and spectral shape. In this study, the antineutrino spectra were calculated by using the updated nuclear database, and we found that the four isotopes antineutrino spectrum have all contribution to the 5--7 MeV bump with ENDF/B-VII.1 fission yield. The bump can be explained well using the updated library and more important isotopes contribution to the bump were also given. In the last, the fission yield correlation coefficient between the four isotopes were discussed, and found that the correlation coefficients are very large.

Reactor Neutrino Experiments: Present and Future

Reactor neutrinos have been an important tool for both discovery and precision measurement in the history of neutrino studies. Since the first generation of reactor neutrino experiments in the 1950s, the detector technology has been greatly advanced. New ideas, new knowledge, and modern software also enhanced the power of the experiments. The current reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO have led neutrino physics into the precision era. In this article, we will review these developments and accumulations, address the key issues in designing a state-of-art reactor neutrino experiment, and explain how the challenging requirements of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy with the next generation experiment JUNO could be realized in the near future.

Quenching of fluorescence for linear alkylbenzene

Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator is adopted as the central detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors. A quenching factor measurement instrument is designed based on the Compton scattering process. Two different quenchers for the liquid scintillator have been investigated and the result shows that the scintillation light of the JUNO liquid scintillator can be quenched to a level. The emission spectrum with the absence of the quencher is also showing a desired behavior.

Intrinsic Structures of Certain Musielak-Orlicz Hardy Spaces

For any $p\in(0,\,1]$, let $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ be the Musielak-Orlicz Hardy space associated with the Musielak-Orlicz growth function $Φ_p$, defined by setting, for any $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$ and $t\in[0,\,\infty)$, $$ Φ_{p}(x,\,t):= \begin{cases} \frac{t}{\log(e+t)+[t(1+|x|)^n]^{1-p}} & \qquad \text{when } n(1/p-1)\notin \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}; \\ \frac{t}{\log(e+t)+[t(1+|x|)^n]^{1-p}[\log(e+|x|)]^p} & \qquad \text{when } n(1/p-1)\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{0\},\\ \end{cases} $$ which is the sharp target space of the bilinear decomposition of the product of the Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and its dual. Moreover, $H^{Φ_1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is the prototype appearing in the real-variable theory of general Musielak-Orlicz Hardy spaces. In this article, the authors find a new structure of the space $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ by showing that, for any $p\in(0,\,1]$, $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb{R}^n)=H^{ϕ_0}(\mathbb{R}^n) +H_{W_p}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and, for any $p\in(0,\,1)$, $H^{Φ_p}(\mathbb{R}^n)=H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n) +H_{W_p}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where $H^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ denotes the classical real Hardy space, $H^{ϕ_0}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ the Orlicz-Hardy space associated with the Orlicz function $ϕ_0(t):=t/\log(e+t)$ for any $t\in [0,\infty)$ and $H_{W_p}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ the weighted Hardy space associated with certain weight function $W_p(x)$ that is comparable to $Φ_p(x,1)$ for any $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$. As an application, the authors further establish an interpolation theorem of quasilinear operators based on this new structure.

Physics potential of searching for $0νββ$ decays in JUNO

In the past few decades, numerous searches have been made for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0$νββ$) process, aiming to establish whether neutrinos are their own antiparticles (Majorana neutrinos), but no 0$νββ$ decay signal has yet been observed. A number of new experiments are proposed but they ultimately suffer from a common problem: the sensitivity may not increase indefinitely with the target mass. We have performed a detailed analysis of the physics potential by using the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to improve the sensitivity to 0$νββ$ up to a few meV, a major step forward with respect to the experiments currently being planned. JUNO is a 20 kton low-background liquid scintillator (LS) detector with 3\%/$\sqrt{E \text{(MeV)}}$ energy resolution, now under construction. It is feasible to build a balloon filled with enriched xenon gas (with $^{136}$Xe up to 80\%) dissolved in LS, inserted into the central region of the JUNO LS. The energy resolution is $\sim$1.9\% at the $Q$-value of $^{136}$Xe 0$νββ$ decay. Ultra-low background is the key for 0$νββ$ decay searches. Detailed studies of background rates from intrinsic 2$νββ$ and $^{8}$B solar neutrinos, natural radioactivity, and cosmogenic radionuclides (including light isotopes and $^{137}$Xe) were performed and several muon veto schemes were developed. We find that JUNO has the potential to reach a sensitivity (at 90\% C. L.) to $T^{0νββ}_{1/2}$ of $1.8\times10^{28}$ yr ($5.6\times10^{27}$ yr) with $\sim$50 tons (5 tons) of fiducial $^{136}$Xe and 5 years exposure, while in the 50-ton case the corresponding sensitivity to the effective neutrino mass, $m_{ββ}$, could reach (5--12) meV, covering completely the allowed region of inverted neutrino mass ordering.

Radiation Studies for the Target Station of the MOMENT

The discovery of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ opens new opportunities for the discovery of the leptonic CP violation for high intensity neutrino beams. MOMENT a future neutrino facility with a high-power proton beam of 15 MW from a continuous-wave linac is focused on that discovery. The high power of the proton beam causes extreme radiation conditions for the facility and especially for the target station where the pion capture system of five superconducting solenoids is located. In this paper initial studies are performed for the effects of the radiation on the solenoid structure and the area surrounding it. A concept cooling system is also proposed.

Global-Scale Resource Survey and Performance Monitoring of Public OGC Web Map Services

One of the most widely-implemented service standards provided by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) to the user community is the Web Map Service (WMS). WMS is widely employed globally, but there is limited knowledge of the global distribution, adoption status or the service quality of these online WMS resources. To fill this void, we investigated global WMSs resources and performed distributed performance monitoring of these services. This paper explicates a distributed monitoring framework that was used to monitor 46,296 WMSs continuously for over one year and a crawling method to discover these WMSs. We analyzed server locations, provider types, themes, the spatiotemporal coverage of map layers and the service versions for 41,703 valid WMSs. Furthermore, we appraised the stability and performance of basic operations for 1210 selected WMSs (i.e., GetCapabilities and GetMap). We discuss the major reasons for request errors and performance issues, as well as the relationship between service response times and the spatiotemporal distribution of client monitoring sites. This paper will help service providers, end users and developers of standards to grasp the status of global WMS resources, as well as to understand the adoption status of OGC standards. The conclusions drawn in this paper can benefit geospatial resource discovery, service performance evaluation and guide service performance improvements.

Bilinear Decompositions of Products of Hardy and Lipschitz Spaces Through Wavelets

The aim of this article is to give a complete solution to the problem of the bilinear decompositions of the products of some Hardy spaces $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their duals in the case when $p<1$ and near to $1$, via wavelets, paraproducts and the theory of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. Precisely, the authors establish the bilinear decompositions of the product spaces $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\times\dotΛ_α (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\timesΛ_α(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where, for all $p\in(\frac{n}{n+1},\,1)$ and $α:=n(\frac{1}{p}-1)$, $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ denotes the classical real Hardy space, and $\dotΛ_α$ and $Λ_α$ denote the homogeneous, respectively, the inhomogeneous Lipschitz spaces. Sharpness of these two bilinear decompositions are also proved. As an application, the authors establish some div-curl lemmas at the endpoint case.

Potential of Geo-neutrino Measurements at JUNO

The flux of geoneutrinos at any point on the Earth is a function of the abundance and distribution of radioactive elements within our planet. This flux has been successfully detected by the 1-kt KamLAND and 0.3-kt Borexino detectors with these measurements being limited by their low statistics. The planned 20-kt JUNO detector will provide an exciting opportunity to obtain a high statistics measurement, which will provide data to address several questions of geological importance. This paper presents the JUNO detector design concept, the expected geo-neutrino signal and corresponding backgrounds. The precision level of geo-neutrino measurements at JUNO is obtained with the standard least-squares method. The potential of the Th/U ratio and mantle measurements is also discussed.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

A parametrization of the cosmic-ray muon flux at sea-level

Based on the standard Gaisser's formula, a modified parametrization for the sea-level cosmic-ray muon flux is introduced. The modification is verified against experimental results. The average vertical cosmic-ray muon intensity as a function of depth of standard rock is simulated using the modified formula as input to the MUSIC code. The calculated muon intensities is consistent with the experimental measurements.

Rayleigh scattering of linear alkylbenzene in large liquid scintillator detectors

Rayleigh scattering poses an intrinsic limit for the transparency of organic liquid scintillators. This work focuses on the Rayleigh scattering length of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), which will be used as the solvent of the liquid scintillator in the central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory. We investigate the anisotropy of the Rayleigh scattering in LAB, showing that the resulting Rayleigh scattering length will be significantly shorter than reported before. Given the same overall light attenuation, this will result in a more efficient transmission of photons through the scintillator, increasing the amount of light collected by the photosensors and thereby the energy resolution of the detector.

Constraining Absolute Neutrino Masses via Detection of Galactic Supernova Neutrinos at JUNO

A high-statistics measurement of the neutrinos from a galactic core-collapse supernova is extremely important for understanding the explosion mechanism, and studying the intrinsic properties of neutrinos themselves. In this paper, we explore the possibility to constrain the absolute scale of neutrino masses $m^{}_ν$ via the detection of galactic supernova neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) with a 20 kiloton liquid-scintillator detector. In assumption of a nearly-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum and a normal mass ordering, the upper bound on the absolute neutrino mass is found to be $m^{}_ν< (0.83 \pm 0.24)~{\rm eV}$ at the 95% confidence level for a typical galactic supernova at a distance of 10 kpc, where the mean value and standard deviation are shown to account for statistical fluctuations. For comparison, we find that the bound in the Super-Kamiokande experiment is $m^{}_ν< (0.94 \pm 0.28)~{\rm eV}$ at the same confidence level. However, the upper bound will be relaxed when the model parameters characterizing the time structure of supernova neutrino fluxes are not exactly known, and when the neutrino mass ordering is inverted.

Maximal Function Characterizations of Hardy Spaces Associated to Homogeneous Higher Order Elliptic Operators

Let $L$ be a homogeneous divergence form higher order elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients and $(p_-(L),\, p_+(L))$ be the maximal interval of exponents $q\in[1,\,\infty]$ such that the semigroup $\{e^{-tL}\}_{t>0}$ is bounded on $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In this article, the authors establish the non-tangential maximal function characterizations of the associated Hardy spaces $H_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for all $p\in(0,\,p_+(L))$, which, when $p=1$, answers a question asked by Deng et al. in [J. Funct. Anal. 263 (2012), 604-674]. Moreover, the authors characterize $H_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ via various versions of square functions and Lusin-area functions associated to the operator $L$.

Spectroscopic study of light scattering in linear alkylbenzene for liquid scintillator neutrino detectors

We has set up a light scattering spectrometer to study the depolarization of light scattering in linear alkylbenzene. From the scattering spectra it can be unambiguously shown that the depolarized part of light scattering belongs to Rayleigh scattering. The additional depolarized Rayleigh scattering can make the effective transparency of linear alkylbenzene much better than it was expected. Therefore sufficient scintillation photons can transmit through the large liquid scintillator detector of JUNO. Our study is crucial to achieving the unprecedented energy resolution 3\%/$\sqrt{E\mathrm{(MeV)}}$ for JUNO experiment to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. The spectroscopic method can also be used to judge the attribution of the depolarization of other organic solvents used in neutrino experiments.
