Rayleigh scattering and depolarization ratio in linear alkylbenzene

Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) is adopted to be the organic solvent for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors due to the ultra-transparency. However the current Rayleigh scattering length calculation disagrees with the measurement. The present paper for the first time reports the Rayleigh scattering of LAB being anisotropic and the depolarization ratio being 0.31+-0.01(stat.)+-0.01(sys.). We proposed an indirectly method for Rayleigh scattering measurement with Einstein-Smoluchowski-Cabannes formula, and the Rayleigh scattering length of LAB is determined to be 28.2+-1.0 m at 430 nm.

Densities, isobaric thermal expansion coefficients and isothermal compressibilities of linear alkylbenzene

We report the measurements of the densities of linear alkylbenzene at three temperatures over 4 to 23 Celsius degree with pressures up to 10 MPa. The measurements have been analysed to yield the isobaric thermal expansion coefficients and, so far for the first time, isothermal compressibilities of linear alkylbenzene. Relevance of results for current generation (i.e. Daya Bay) and next generation (i.e. JUNO) large liquid scintillator neutrino detectors are discussed.

Weak Hardy Spaces $WH_L^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ Associated to Operators Satisfying $k$-Davies-Gaffney Estimates

Let $L$ be a one-to-one operator of type $ω$ having a bounded $H_\infty$ functional calculus and satisfying the $k$-Davies-Gaffney estimates with $k\in{\mathbb N}$. In this paper, the authors introduce the weak Hardy space $WH_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ associated to $L$ for $p\in (0,\,1]$ via the non-tangential square function $S_L$ and establish a weak molecular characterization of $WH_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Typical examples of such operators include the $2k$-order divergence form homogeneous elliptic operator $L_1:=(-1)^k\sum_{|α|=k=|β|}\partial^β(a_{α,β}\partial^α)$, where $\{a_{α,β}\}_{|α|=k=|β|}$ are complex bounded measurable functions, and the $2k$-order Schrödinger type operator $L_2:= (-Δ)^k+V^k$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian operator and $0\le V\in L^k_{\mathop\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. As applications, for $i\in\{1,\,2\}$ and $p\in(\frac{n}{n+k},\,1]$, the authors prove that the associated Riesz transform $\nabla^k (L_i^{-1/2})$ is bounded from $WH^p_{L_i}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to the classical weak Hardy space $WH^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and, for all $0<p<r\le1$ and $α=n(\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{r})$, the fractional power $L_i^{-\fracα{2k}}$ is bounded from $WH_{L_i}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to $WH_{L_i}^r(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Furthermore, the authors find the dual space of $WH_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $p\in(0,\,1]$, which can be defined via mean oscillations based on some subtle coverings of bounded open sets and, even when $L:=-Δ$, are also previously unknown. In particular, if $L$ is a nonnegative self-adjoint operator in $L^2({\mathbb R}^n)$ satisfying the Davies-Gaffney estimates, the authors further establish the weak atomic characterization of $WH_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Riesz Transform Characterizations of Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy Spaces

Let $φ$ be a Musielak-Orlicz function satisfying that, for any $(x,\,t)\in\mathbb{R}^n\times(0,\,\infty)$, $φ(\cdot,\,t)$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt weight class $A_\infty (\mathbb{R}^n)$ with the critical weight exponent $q(φ)\in[1,\,\infty)$ and $φ(x,\,\cdot)$ is an Orlicz function with $0 \frac{n-1}{n}$, and via all the Riesz transforms with the order not more than $m\in\mathbb{N}$ when $\frac{i(φ)}{q(φ)}>\frac{n-1}{n+m-1}$. Moreover, the authors also establish the Riesz transform characterizations of $H_φ(\mathbb{R}^n)$, respectively, by means of the higher order Riesz transforms defined via the homogenous harmonic polynomials or the odd order Riesz transforms. Even if when $φ(x,t):=tw(x)$ for all $x\in{\mathbb R}^n$ and $t\in [0,\infty)$, these results also widen the range of weights in the known Riesz characterization of the classical weighted Hardy space $H^1_w({\mathbb R}^n)$ obtained by R. L. Wheeden from $w\in A_1({\mathbb R}^n)$ into $w\in A_\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$ with the sharp range $q(w)\in [1,\frac n{n-1})$, where $q(w)$ denotes the critical index of the weight $w$.

High-efficiency waveguide couplers via impedance-tunable transformation optics

We design compact waveguide couplers via impedance-tunable transformation optics. By tuning impedance coefficients in the original space, two-dimensional metallic and dielectric waveguide couplers are designed with a high efficiency. Through tuning refractive index simultaneously, we find that the transformation medium inside a designed metallic waveguide coupler can be a reduced-parameter material for coupling waves between waveguides with arbitrary different cross sections and embedded media. In the design of dielectric waveguide couplers, we apply two different schemes: one is that both core region and its cladding region are contained in a transformed space, the other is only core region contained in the transformed space. The former has a very high efficiency near 100%; the latter is less efficient with a very small decline which can be a simplified candidate in the design of near-perfect dielectric waveguide couplers. The transformation medium for dielectric waveguide couplers can also be reduced-parameter material by selecting appropriate refractive index coefficients. Two-dimensional numerical simulations confirm our design with good performances.

The high-speed after pulse measurement system for PMT

A system employing a desktop FADC has been developed to investigate the features of 8 inches Hamamatsu PMT. The system stands out for its high-speed and informative results as a consequence of adopting fast waveform sampling technology. Recording full waveforms allows us to perform digital signal processing, pulse shape analysis, and precision timing extraction. High precision after pulse time and charge distribution characteristics are presented in this manuscript. Other photomultipliers characteristics, such as dark rate and transit time spread, can also be obtained by exploiting waveform analysis using this system.

Measurement of the liquid scintillator nonlinear energy response to electron

Nonlinearity of the liquid scintillator energy response is a key to measuring the neutrino energy spectrum in reactor neutrino experiments such as Daya Bay and JUNO. We measured in laboratory the nonlinearity of the Linear Alkyl Benzene based liquid scintillator, which is used in Daya Bay and will be used in JUNO, via Compton scattering process. By tagging the scattered gamma from the liquid scintillator sample simultaneously at seven angles, the instability of the system was largely cancelled. The accurately measured nonlinearity will improve the precision of the $θ_{13}$, $Δm^2$, and reactor neutrino spectrum measurements at Daya Bay.

MOMENT: a muon-decay medium-baseline neutrino beam facility

Neutrino beam with about 300 MeV in energy, high-flux and medium baseline is considered a rational choice for measuring CP violation before the more powerful Neutrino Factory will be built. Following this concept, a unique neutrino beam facility based on muon-decayed neutrinos is proposed. The facility adopts a continuous-wave proton linac of 1.5 GeV and 10 mA as the proton driver, which can deliver an extremely high beam power of 15 MW. Instead of pion-decayed neutrinos, unprecedentedly intense muon-decayed neutrinos are used for better background discrimination. The schematic design for the facility is presented here, including the proton driver, the assembly of a mercury-jet target and capture superconducting solenoids, a pion/muon beam transport line, a long muon decay channel of about 600 m and the detector concept. The physics prospects and the technical challenges are also discussed.

Production of Gadolinium-loaded Liquid Scintillator for the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

We report on the production and characterization of liquid scintillators for the detection of electron antineutrinos by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. One hundred eighty-five tons of gadolinium-loaded (0.1% by mass) liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) and two hundred tons of unloaded liquid scintillator (LS) were successfully produced from a linear-alkylbenzene (LAB) solvent in six months. The scintillator properties, the production and purification systems, and the quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures are described.

Reflectionless design of optical elements using impedance-tunable coordinate transformation

We report a new strategy to remove the reflections resulted from the finite embedded transformation-optical design by proposing an impedance-tunable coordinate transformation, on which the functions of impedance coefficients can be derived in the original space without changing the refractive index. Based on the new approach, two-dimensional (2D) reflectionless beam compressors/expanders, bends, shifters and splitters are designed using the modified anisotropic medium. It is found that the reflections can be removed in magnetic response materials for TE polarization or dielectric response materials for TM polarization. The numerical simulations confirm that various reflectionless optical elements can be realized in the pure transformation optics. The impedance-tunable coordinate transformation can be generalized to three-dimensional (3D) cases and be applied to other transformation-optical designs.

Unambiguous Determination of the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy Using Reactor Neutrinos

Determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy in a reactor neutrino experiment at medium baseline is discussed. Observation of the interference effects between the Δm^2_{31} and Δm^2_{32} oscillations enables a relative measurement independent of the knowledge of the absolute mass-squared difference. With a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector of 3%/\sqrt{E(MeV)} energy resolution, the Daya Bay II Experiment at a baseline of \sim 50 km from reactors of total thermal power 36 GW can determine the mass hierarchy at a confidence level of Δχ^2_{MH} \sim (10-12) (3-3.5 σ) in 6 years after taking into account the real spatial distribution of reactor cores. We show that the unknown residual energy non-linearity of the liquid scintillator detector has limited impact on the sensitivity due to the self-calibration of small oscillation peaks. Furthermore, an extra increase of Δχ^2_{MH} \simeq 4(9) can be obtained, by including the precise measurement of the effective mass-squared difference Δm^2_{μμ} of expected relative error 1.5% (1%) from ongoing long-baseline muon neutrino disappearance experiments. The sensitivities from the interference and from absolute measurements can be cross checked. When combining these two, the mass hierarchy can be determined at a confidence level of Δχ^2_{MH} \sim (15-20) (4 σ) in 6 years.

Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy Spaces Associated with Operators Satisfying Reinforced Off-Diagonal Estimates

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a metric space with doubling measure and $L$ a one-to-one operator of type $ω$ having a bounded $H_\infty$-functional calculus in $L^2(\mathcal{X})$ satisfying the reinforced $(p_L, q_L)$ off-diagonal estimates on balls, where $p_L\in[1,2)$ and $q_L\in(2,\infty]$. Let $φ:\,\mathcal{X}\times[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ be a function such that $φ(x,\cdot)$ is an Orlicz function, $φ(\cdot,t)\in {\mathbb A}_{\infty}(\mathcal{X})$ (the class of uniformly Muckenhoupt weights), its uniformly critical upper type index $I(φ)\in(0,1]$ and $φ(\cdot,t)$ satisfies the uniformly reverse Hölder inequality of order $(q_L/I(φ))'$. In this paper, the authors introduce a Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space $H_{φ,\,L}(\mathcal{X})$, via the Lusin-area function associated with $L$, and establish its molecular characterization. In particular, when $L$ is nonnegative self-adjoint and satisfies the Davies-Gaffney estimates, the atomic characterization of $H_{φ,\,L}(\mathcal{X})$ is also obtained. Furthermore, a sufficient condition for the equivalence between $H_{φ,\,L}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and the classical Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space $H_φ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is given. Moreover, for the Musielak-Orlicz-Hardy space $H_{φ,\,L}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ associated with the second order elliptic operator in divergence form on $\rn$ or the Schrödinger operator $L:=-Δ+V$ with $0\le V\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, the authors further obtain its several equivalent characterizations in terms of various non-tangential and radial maximal functions; finally, the authors discuss the boundedness of the Riesz transform $\nabla L^{-1/2}$.

Weighted Local Orlicz-Hardy Spaces on Domains and Their Applications in Inhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann Problems

Let $Ω$ be either $\mathbb{R}^n$ or a strongly Lipschitz domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $ω\in A_{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ (the class of Muckenhoupt weights). Let $L$ be a second order divergence form elliptic operator on $L^2 (Ω)$ with the Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition, and assume that the heat semigroup generated by $L$ has the Gaussian property $(G_1)$ with the regularity of their kernels measured by $μ\in(0,1]$. Let $Φ$ be a continuous, strictly increasing, subadditive, positive and concave function on $(0,\infty)$ of critical lower type index $p_Φ^-\in(0,1]$. In this paper, the authors introduce the "geometrical" weighted local Orlicz-Hardy spaces $h^Φ_{ω,\,r}(Ω)$ and $h^Φ_{ω,\,z}(Ω)$ via the weighted local Orlicz-Hardy spaces $h^Φ_ω(\mathbb{R}^n)$, and obtain their two equivalent characterizations in terms of the nontangential maximal function and the Lusin area function associated with the heat semigroup generated by $L$ when $p_Φ^-\in(n/(n+μ),1]$. As applications, the authors prove that the operators $\nabla^2{\mathbb G}_D$ are bounded from $h^Φ_{ω,\,r}(Ω)$ to the weighted Orlicz space $L^Φ_ω(Ω)$, and from $h^Φ_{ω,\,r}(Ω)$ to itself when $Ω$ is a bounded semiconvex domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $p_Φ^-\in(\frac{n}{n+1},1]$, and the operators $\nabla^2{\mathbb G}_N$ are bounded from $h^Φ_{ω,\,z}(Ω)$ to $L^Φ_ω(Ω)$, and from $h^Φ_{ω,\,z}(Ω)$ to $h^Φ_{ω,\,r}(Ω)$ when $Ω$ is a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $p_Φ^-\in(\frac{n}{n+1},1]$, where ${\mathbb G}_D$ and ${\mathbb G}_N$ denote, respectively, the Dirichlet Green operator and the Neumann Green operator.

Endpoint Boundedness of Riesz Transforms on Hardy Spaces Associated with Operators

Let $L_1$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator in $L^2({\mathbb R}^n)$ satisfying the Davies-Gaffney estimates and $L_2$ a second order divergence form elliptic operator with complex bounded measurable coefficients. A typical example of $L_1$ is the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$, where $Δ$ is the Laplace operator on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and $0\le V\in L^1_{\mathop\mathrm{loc}} ({\mathbb R}^n)$. Let $H^p_{L_i}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ be the Hardy space associated to $L_i$ for $i\in\{1,\,2\}$. In this paper, the authors prove that the Riesz transform $D (L_i^{-1/2})$ is bounded from $H^p_{L_i}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to the classical weak Hardy space $WH^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in the critical case that $p=n/(n+1)$. Recall that it is known that $D (L_i^{-1/2})$ is bounded from $H^p_{L_i}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to the classical Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $p\in(n/(n+1),\,1]$.

Hardy Spaces $H_L^p({\mathbb R}^n)$ Associated to Operators Satisfying $k$-Davies-Gaffney Estimates

Let $L$ be a one to one operator of type $ω$ having a bounded $H_\infty$ functional calculus and satisfying the $k$-Davies-Gaffney estimates with $k\in{\mathbb N}$. In this paper, the authors introduce the Hardy space $H_L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $p\in (0,\,1]$ associated to $L$ in terms of square functions defined via $\{e^{-t^{2k}L}\}_{t>0}$ and establish their molecular and generalized square function characterizations. Typical examples of such operators include the $2k$-order divergence form homogeneous elliptic operator $L_1$ with complex bounded measurable coefficients and the $2k$-order Schrödinger type operator $L_2\equiv (-Δ)^k+V^k$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian and $0\le V\in L^k_{\mathop\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Moreover, as applications, for $i\in\{1,\,2\}$, the authors prove that the associated Riesz transform $\nabla^k(L_i^{-1/2})$ is bounded from $H_{L_i}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to $H^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $p\in(n/(n+k),\,1]$ and establish the Riesz transform characterizations of $H_{L_1}^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $ p\in(rn/(n+kr),\,1]$ if $\{e^{-tL_1}\}_{t>0}$ satisfies the $L^r-L^2$ $k$-off-diagonal estimates with $r\in (1,2]$. These results when $k\equiv1$ and $L\equiv L_1$ are known.

Determining Reactor Neutrino Flux

Flux is an important source of uncertainties for a reactor neutrino experiment. It is determined from thermal power measurements, reactor core simulation, and knowledge of neutrino spectra of fuel isotopes. Past reactor neutrino experiments have determined the flux to (2-3)% precision. Precision measurements of mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by reactor neutrino experiments in the coming years will use near-far detector configurations. Most uncertainties from reactor will be canceled out. Understanding of the correlation of uncertainties is required for $θ_{13}$ experiments. Precise determination of reactor neutrino flux will also improve the sensitivity of the non-proliferation monitoring and future reactor experiments. We will discuss the flux calculation and recent progresses.

The fast light of CsI(Na) crystals

The responds of different common alkali halide crystals to alpha-rays and gamma-rays are tested in our research. It is found that only CsI(Na) crystals have significantly different waveforms between alpha and gamma scintillations, while others have not this phenomena. It is suggested that the fast light of CsI(Na) crystals arises from the recombination of free electrons with self-trapped holes of the host crystal CsI. Self-absorption limits the emission of fast light of CsI(Tl) and NaI(Tl) crystals.

Neutron-gamma discrimination of CsI(Na) crystals for dark matter searches

The luminescent properties of CsI(Na) crystals are studied in this report. By using a TDS3054C oscilloscope with a sampling frequency of 5 GS/s, we find out that nuclear recoil signals are dominated by very fast light pulse with a decay time of ~20 ns, while γ-ray signals have a decay time of ~600 ns. The wavelength of nuclear recoil and γ-ray signals are also different. The study of n/γ separation shows that the rejection factor can reach an order of 10-7 with signal efficiency more than 80% at an equivalent electron recoil energy of 20 keV or more. Such a property makes CsI(Na) an ideal candidate for dark matter searches.
