Categorification of Donaldson-Thomas invariants by Perverse Sheaves

We show that there is a natural perverse sheaf on the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional. This gives us a cohomology theory whose Euler numbers are Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Phase-coexistence Simulations of Fluid Mixtures by the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method Using Single-Particle Models

We present a single-particle Lennard-Jones (L-J) model for CO2 and N2. Simplified L-J models for other small polyatomic molecules can be obtained following the methodology described herein. The phase-coexistence diagrams of single-component systems computed using the proposed single-particle models for CO2 and N2 agree well with experimental data over a wide range of temperatures. These diagrams are computed using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MC) method based on the Gibbs-NVT ensemble. This good agreement validates the proposed simplified models. That is, with properly selected parameters, the single-particle models have similar accuracy in predicting gas-phase properties as more complex, state-of-the-art molecular models. To further test these single-particle models, three binary mixtures of CH4, CO2 and N2 are studied using a Gibbs-NPT ensemble. These results are compared against experimental data over a wide range of pressures. The single-particle model has similar accuracy in the gas phase as traditional models although its deviation in the liquid phase is greater. The simplified model improves the computational efficiency significantly, particularly in the case of high liquid density where the acceptance rate of the particle-swap trial move increases. The MC method based on Gibbs-NVT ensemble is a viable alternative to simulate phase-coexistence of fluid mixtures. We compare, at constant temperature and pressure, the Gibbs-NPT and Gibbs-NVT ensembles to analyze their performance differences and results consistency. As theoretically predicted, the agreement between the simulations implies that Gibbs-NVT can be used to validate Gibbs-NPT predictions when experimental data is not available.

Comparison between the DSMC and DSBGK Methods

Recently, the DSBGK method (note: the original name DS-BGK is changed to DSBGK for simplicity) was proposed based on the BGK equation to reduce the stochastic noise in simulating rarefied gas flows at low velocity, in which the deviation from equilibrium state is small making the traditional DSMC simulation time-consuming due to the dominance of noise in transient results. In both DSMC and DSBGK simulations, the simulated molecules move into and out of cells randomly and frequently. Consequently, the transient information of molecules in each particular cell contains significant noise. The DSMC method uses the transient values of molecular variables to compute the cell's variables (including number density, flow velocity and temperature) and so the stochastic noise in its cell's variables is remarkable particularly in the case of low velocity. In the DSBGK simulation, the increments rather than the transient information of molecular variables are used to update the cell's variables based on the mass, momentum and energy conservation principles of intermolecular collision process. This updating scheme significantly reduces the noise in cell's variables of DSBGK simulations because the molecular variables are updated smoothly by the extrapolation of acceptance-rejection scheme and so their increments contain low noise. The detailed comparisons of algorithms and results between the DSMC and DSBGK methods are given here. Several benchmark problems are simulated to verify the DSBGK method by comparison with the DSMC method as criterion.

Saturn's Rings are Fractal

Over the past few decades, various conjectures were advanced that Saturn's rings are Cantor-like sets, although no convincing fractal analysis of actual images has ever appeared. We focus on the images sent by the Cassini spacecraft mission: slide #42 "Mapping Clumps in Saturn's Rings" and slide #54 "Scattered Sunshine". Using the box-counting method, we determine the fractal dimension of rings seen here (and in several other images from the same source) to be consistently about 1.6~1.7. This supports many conjectures put forth over several decades that Saturn's rings are indeed fractal.

An algebraic proof of the hyperplane property of the genus one GW-invariants of quintics

Li-Zinger's hyperplane theorem states that the genus one GW-invariants of the quintic threefold is the sum of its reduced genus one GW-invariants and 1/12 multiplies of its genus zero GW-invariants. We apply the Guffin-Sharpe-Witten's theory (GSW theory) to give an algebro-geometric proof of the hyperplane theorem, including separation of contributions and computation of 1/12.

Superconductivity suppression of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 single crystals by substitution of transition-metal (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)

We investigated the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities on the single-crystalline p-type Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) superconductors. The superconductivity indicates robustly against impurity of Ru, while weakly against the impurities of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. However, the present Tc suppression rate of both magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities remains much lower than what was expected for the s\pm-wave model. The temperature dependence of resistivity data is observed an obvious low-T upturn for the crystals doped with high-level impurity, which is due to the occurrence of localization. Thus, the relatively weak Tc suppression effect from Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are considered as a result of localization rather than pair-breaking effect in s\pm-wave model.

Two sample tests for high-dimensional covariance matrices

We propose two tests for the equality of covariance matrices between two high-dimensional populations. One test is on the whole variance--covariance matrices, and the other is on off-diagonal sub-matrices, which define the covariance between two nonoverlapping segments of the high-dimensional random vectors. The tests are applicable (i) when the data dimension is much larger than the sample sizes, namely the "large $p$, small $n$" situations and (ii) without assuming parametric distributions for the two populations. These two aspects surpass the capability of the conventional likelihood ratio test. The proposed tests can be used to test on covariances associated with gene ontology terms.

A convergence theorem for a class of Nystrom methods for weakly singular integral equations on surfaces in R^3

A convergence theorem is proved for a class of Nystrom methods for weakly singular integral equations on surfaces in three dimensions. Fredholm equations of the second kind as arise in connection with linear elliptic boundary value problems for scalar and vector fields are considered. In contrast to methods based on product integration, coordinate transformations and singularity subtraction, the family of Nystrom methods studied here is based on a local polynomial correction determined by an auxiliary system of moment equations. The polynomial correction is shown to remove the weak singularity in the integral equation and provide control over the approximation error. Convergence results for the family of methods are established under minimal regularity assumptions consistent with classic potential theory. Rates of convergence are shown to depend on the regularity of the problem, the degree of the polynomial correction, and the order of the quadrature rule employed in the discretization. As a corollary, a simple method based on singularity subtraction which has been employed by many authors is shown to be convergent.

Cyclotron Resonance Energies and Orbital Elements of Accretion Pulsar 4U 0115+63 During the Giant Outburst in 2008

We present both timing and spectral analysis of the outburst of 4U 0115+63 in April -- May 2008 with INTEGRAL and RXTE observations. We have determined the spin period of the neutron star at $\sim 3.61430 \pm 0.00003$ s, and a spin up rate during the outburst of $\dot{P}=(-7.24 \pm 0.03)\times10^{-6} {\rm s d^{-1}}$, the angle of periapsis $ω=48.67^\circ \pm 0.04^\circ$ in 2008 and its variation (apsidal motion) $\dotω = 0.048^\circ \pm 0.003^\circ {\rm yr}^{-1}$. We also confirm the relation of spin-up torque versus luminosity in this source during the giant outburst. The hard X-ray spectral properties of 4U 0115+63 during the outburst are studied with INTEGRAL and RXTE. Four cyclotron absorption lines are detected using the spectra from combined data of IBIS and JEM-X aboard INTEGRAL in the energy range of 3 -- 100 keV. The 5 -- 50 keV luminosities at an assumed distance of 7 kpc are determined to be in the range of $(1.5-12)\times 10^{37} {\rm ergs s^{-1}}$ during the outburst. The fundamental absorption line energy varies during the outburst: around 15 keV during the rising phase, and transiting to $\sim 10$ keV during the peak of the outburst, and further coming back to $\sim 15$ keV during the decreasing phase. The variations of photon index show the correlation with the fundamental line energy changes: the source becomes harder around the peak of the outburst and softer in both rising and decreasing phases. This correlation and transition processes during the outburst need further studies in both observations and theoretical work. The known relation of the fundamental line energy and X-ray luminosity is confirmed by our results, however, our discoveries suggest that some other factors besides luminosity play the important role in fundamental line energy variations and spectral transitions.

Balanced metrics on non-Kahler Calabi-Yau threefolds

We construct balanced metrics on the family of non-Kähler Calabi-Yau threefolds that are obtained by smoothing after contracting $(-1,-1)$-rational curves on Kähler Calabi-Yau threefold. As an application, we construct balanced metrics on complex manifolds diffeomorphic to connected sum of $k\geq 2$ copies of $S^3\times S^3$.

Universal polynomials for singular curves on surfaces

Let S be a complex smooth projective surface and L be a line bundle on S. For any given collection of isolated topological or analytic singularity types, we show the number of curves in the linear system |L| with prescribed singularities is a universal polynomial of Chern numbers of L and S, assuming L is sufficiently ample. Moreover, we define a generating series whose coefficients are these universal polynomials and discuss its properties. This work is a generalization of Gottsche's conjecture to curves with higher singularities.

Channel Identification and its Impact on Quantum LDPC Code Performance

In this work we probe the impact of channel estimation on the performance of quantum LDPC codes. Our channel estimation is based on an optimal estimate of the relevant decoherence parameter via its quantum Fisher information. Using state-of-the art quantum LDPC codes designed for the quantum depolarization channel, and utilizing various quantum probes with different entanglement properties, we show how the performance of such codes can deteriorate by an order of magnitude when optimal channel identification is fed into a belief propagation decoding algorithm. Our work highlights the importance in quantum communications of a viable channel identification campaign prior to decoding, and highlights the trade-off between entanglement consumption and quantum LDPC code performance.

Low and Upper Bound of Approximate Sequence for the Entropy Rate of Binary Hidden Markov Processes

In the paper, the approximate sequence for entropy of some binary hidden Markov models has been found to have two bound sequences, the low bound sequence and the upper bound sequence. The error bias of the approximate sequence is bound by a geometric sequence with a scale factor less than 1 which decreases quickly to zero. It helps to understand the convergence of entropy rate of generic hidden Markov models, and it provides a theoretical base for estimating the entropy rate of some hidden Markov models at any accuracy.

On the global existence and stability of a three-dimensional supersonic conic shock wave

We establish the global existence and stability of a three-dimensional supersonic conic shock wave for a perturbed steady supersonic flow past an infinitely long circular cone with a sharp angle. The flow is described by a 3-D steady potential equation, which is multi-dimensional, quasilinear, and hyperbolic with respect to the supersonic direction. Making use of the geometric properties of the pointed shock surface together with the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions on the conic shock surface and the boundary condition on the surface of the cone, we obtain a global uniform weighted energy estimate for the nonlinear problem by finding an appropriate multiplier and establishing a new Hardy-type inequality on the shock surface. Based on this, we prove that a multi-dimensional conic shock attached to the vertex of the cone exists globally when the Mach number of the incoming supersonic flow is sufficiently large. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of the 3-D supersonic conic shock solution, that is shown to approach the corresponding background shock solution in the downstream domain for the uniform supersonic constant flow past the sharp cone, is also explicitly given.

On the blowup and lifespan of smooth solutions to a class of 2-D nonlinear wave equations with small initial data

We are concerned with a class of two-dimensional nonlinear wave equations $\p_t^2u-÷(c^2(u)\na u)=0$ or $\p_t^2u-c(u)÷(c(u)\na u)=0$ with small initial data $(u(0,x),\p_tu(0,x))=(\ve u_0(x), \ve u_1(x))$, where $c(u)$ is a smooth function, $c(0)\not =0$, $x\in\Bbb R^2$, $u_0(x), u_1(x)\in C_0^{\infty}(\Bbb R^2)$ depend only on $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+x_2^2}$, and $\ve>0$ is sufficiently small. Such equations arise in a pressure-gradient model of fluid dynamics, also in a liquid crystal model or other variational wave equations. When $c'(0)\not= 0$ or $c'(0)=0$, $c"(0)\not= 0$, we establish blowup and determine the lifespan of smooth solutions.

Good degeneration of Quot-schemes and coherent systems

We construct good degenerations of Quot-schemes and coherent systems using the stack of expanded degenerations. We show that these good degenerations are separated and proper DM stacks of finite type. Applying to the projective threefolds, we derive degeneration formulas for DT-invariants of ideal sheaves and PT stable pair invariants.

Rational Curves on K3 Surfaces

We show that projective K3 surfaces with odd Picard rank contain infinitely many rational curves. Our proof extends the Bogomolov-Hassett-Tschinkel approach, i.e., uses moduli spaces of stable maps and reduction to positive characteristic.
