An Efficient Deterministic Quantum Algorithm for the Integer Square-free Decomposition Problem

Quantum computers are known to be qualitatively more powerful than classical computers, but so far only a small number of different algorithms have been discovered that actually use this potential. It would therefore be highly desirable to develop other types of quantum algorithms that widen the range of possible applications. Here we propose an efficient and deterministic quantum algorithm for finding the square-free part of a large integer - a problem for which no efficient classical algorithm exists. The algorithm relies on properties of Gauss sums and uses the quantum Fourier transform. We give an explicit quantum network for the algorithm. Our algorithm introduces new concepts and methods that have not been used in quantum information processing so far and may be applicable to a wider class of problems.

Hilbert-Mumford criterion for nodal curves

We prove by Hilbert-Mumford criterion that a slope stable polarized weighted pointed nodal curve is Chow asymptotic stable. This generalizes the result of Caporaso on stability of polarized nodal curves, and of Hasset on weighted pointed stable curves polarized by the weighted dualizing sheaves. It also solved a question raised by Mumford and Gieseker to prove the Chow asymptotic stability of stable nodal curves by Hilbert-Mumford criterion.

Open string instantons and relative stable morphisms

We show how topological open string theory amplitudes can be computed by using relative stable morphisms in the algebraic category. We achieve our goal by explicitly working through an example which has been previously considered by Ooguri and Vafa from the point of view of physics. By using the method of virtual localization, we successfully reproduce their results for multiple covers of a holomorphic disc, whose boundary lies in a Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, by Riemann surfaces with arbitrary genera and number of boundary components. In particular we show that in the case we consider there are no open string instantons with more than one boundary component ending on the Lagrangian submanifold.

The New Generation Atlas of Quasar Spectral Energy Distributions from Radio to X-rays

We have produced the next generation of quasar spectral energy distributions (SEDs), essentially updating the work of Elvis et al. (1994) by using high-quality data obtained with several space and ground-based telescopes, including NASA's Great Observatories. We present an atlas of SEDs of 85 optically bright, non-blazar quasars over the electromagnetic spectrum from radio to X-rays. The heterogeneous sample includes 27 radio-quiet and 58 radio-loud quasars. Most objects have quasi-simultaneous ultraviolet-optical spectroscopic data, supplemented with some far-ultraviolet spectra, and more than half also have Spitzer mid-infrared IRS spectra. The X-ray spectral parameters are collected from the literature where available. The radio, far-infrared, and near-infrared photometric data are also obtained from either the literature or new observations. We construct composite spectral energy distributions for radio-loud and radio-quiet objects and compare these to those of Elvis et al., finding that ours have similar overall shapes, but our improved spectral resolution reveals more detailed features, especially in the mid and near-infrared.

Linear decrease of critical temperature with increasing Zn substitution in the iron-based superconductor BaFe1.89-2xZn2xCo0.11As2

The nonmagnetic impurity effect is studied on the Fe-based BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 superconductor (Tc = 25 K) with Zn substitution for Fe up to 8 at. %, which is achieved by means of high-pressure and high-temperature heating. Tc decreases almost linearly with increasing the Zn content and disappears at ~8 atomic %, being different in the shared phenomenology of the early Zn doping studies, where Tc decreases little. The Tc decreasing rate, however, remains much lower (3.63 K/%) than what is expected for the s(+-)-wave model, implying the model is unlikely. Another symmetry model such as the non-sign reversal s-wave model may better account for the result.

Large-deviation analysis for counting statistics in mesoscopic transports

We present an efficient approach, based on a number-conditioned master equation, for large-deviation analysis in mesoscopic transports. Beyond the conventional full-counting-statistics study, the large-deviation approach encodes complete information of both the typical trajectories and the rare ones, in terms of revealing a continuous change of the dynamical phase in trajectory space. The approach is illustrated with two examples: (i) transport through a single quantum dot, where we reveal the inhomogeneous distribution of trajectories in general case and find a particular scale invariance point in trajectory statistics; and (ii) transport through a double dots, where we find a dynamical phase transition between two distinct phases induced by the Coulomb correlation and quantum interference.

Semi-Perfect Obstruction theory and DT Invariants of Derived Objects

We introduce semi-perfect obstruction theory of a Deligne-Mumford stack $X$ consisting of local perfect obstruction theories with weak comparisons on overlaps. We show that semi-perfect obstruction theory shares similar properties with perfect obstruction theory. We use semi-perfect obstruction theory to construct virtual cycles of moduli of derived objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In the revision, we assume the existence of obstruction sheaf and put the (coarse moduli of the) intrinsic normal cone inside the obstruction sheaf. This avoids the issue of descent of bundle stacks of the local obstruction complexes.

Towards High-Performance Network Application Identification With Aggregate-Flow Cache

Classifying network traffic according to their application-layer protocols is an important task in modern networks for traffic management and network security. Existing payload-based or statistical methods of application identification cannot meet the demand of both high performance and accurate identification at the same time. We propose an application identification framework that classifies traffic at aggregate-flow level leveraging aggregate-flow cache. A detailed traffic classifier designed based on this framework is illustrated to improve the throughput of payload-based identification methods. We further optimize the classifier by proposing an efficient design of aggregate-flow cache. The cache design employs a frequency-based, recency-aware replacement algorithm based on the analysis of temporal locality of aggregate-flow cache. Experiments on real-world traces show that our traffic classifier with aggregate-flow cache can reduce up to 95% workload of backend identification engine. The proposed cache replacement algorithm outperforms well-known replacement algorithms, and achieves 90% of the optimal performance using only 15% of memory. The throughput of a payload-based identification system, L7-filter [1], is increased by up to 5.1 times by using our traffic classifier design.

Gromov-Witten invariants of stable maps with fields

We construct the Gromov-Witten invariants of moduli of stable morphisms to $\Pf$ with fields. This is the all genus mathematical theory of the Guffin-Sharpe-Witten model, and is a modified twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of $\Pf$. These invariants are constructed using the cosection localization of Kiem-Li, an algebro-geometric analogue of Witten's perturbed equations in Landau-Ginzburg theory. We prove that these invariants coincide, up to sign, with the Gromov-Witten invariants of quintics.

Observation of the ground-state-geometric phase in a Heisenberg XY model

Geometric phases play a central role in a variety of quantum phenomena, especially in condensed matter physics. Recently, it was shown that this fundamental concept exhibits a connection to quantum phase transitions where the system undergoes a qualitative change in the ground state when a control parameter in its Hamiltonian is varied. Here we report the first experimental study using the geometric phase as a topological test of quantum transitions of the ground state in a Heisenberg XY spin model. Using NMR interferometry, we measure the geometric phase for different adiabatic circuits that do not pass through points of degeneracy.

Derived Resolution Property for Stacks, Euler Classes and Applications

By resolving an arbitrary perfect derived object over a Deligne-Mumford stack, we define its Euler class. We then apply it to define the Euler numbers for a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold in the 4-dimensional projective space. These numbers are conjectured to be the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants and to determine the usual Gromov-Witten numbers of the smooth quintic as speculated by J. Li and A. Zinger.

Localizing Virtual Cycles by Cosections

We show that a cosection of the obstruction sheaf of a perfect obstruction theory localizes the virtual cycle to the non-surjective locus of the cosection. We give algebraic constructions of localized Gysin maps and localized virtual cycles. Various applications of these constructions are discussed.

Direct detection of the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction: Utilizing the SU(2) symmetry

We propose a simple method to detect the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-obit interactions in quantum wells (QWs) without relying on the directional-dependent physical quantities. This method utilize the asymmetry of critical gate voltages that leading to the remarkable signals of SU(2) symmetry, which happens to reflect the intrinsic structure inversion asymmetry of the QW. We support our proposal by the numerical calculation of in-plane relaxation times based on the self-consistent eight-band Kane model. We find that the two different critical gate voltages leading to the maximum spin relaxation times [one effect of the SU(2) symmetry] can simply determine the ratio of the coefficients of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. Our proposal can also be generalized to extract the relative strengths of the spin-orbit interactions in quantum wire and quantum dot structures.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory in a basis function approach

Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory constitutes a framework for the non-perturbative solution of invariant masses and correlated parton amplitudes of self-bound systems. By choosing the light-front gauge and adopting a basis function representation, we obtain a large, sparse, Hamiltonian matrix for mass eigenstates of gauge theories that is solvable by adapting the ab initio no-core methods of nuclear many-body theory. Full covariance is recovered in the continuum limit, the infinite matrix limit. There is considerable freedom in the choice of the orthonormal and complete set of basis functions with convenience and convergence rates providing key considerations. Here, we use a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography. We outline our approach and present illustrative features of some non-interacting systems in a cavity. We illustrate the first steps towards solving QED by obtaining the mass eigenstates of an electron in a cavity in small basis spaces and discuss the computational challenges.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory within an AdS/QCD basis

Non-perturbative Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory presents opportunities and challenges that bridge particle physics and nuclear physics. Fundamental theories, such as Quantum Chromodynmamics (QCD) and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) offer the promise of great predictive power spanning phenomena on all scales from the microscopic to cosmic scales, but new tools that do not rely exclusively on perturbation theory are required to make connection from one scale to the next. We outline recent theoretical and computational progress to build these bridges and provide illustrative results for nuclear structure and quantum field theory. As our framework we choose light-front gauge and a basis function representation with two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography.

Electric field driven quantum phase transition between band insulator and topological insulator

We demonstrate theoretically that electric field can drive a quantum phase transition between band insulator to topological insulator in CdTe/HgCdTe/CdTe quantum wells. The numerical results suggest that the electric field could be used as a switch to turn on or off the topological insulator phase, and temperature can affect significantly the phase diagram for different gate voltage and compositions. Our theoretical results provide us an efficient way to manipulate the quantum phase of HgTe quantum wells.

Spin states in InAs/AlSb/GaSb semiconductor quantum wells

We investigate theoretically the spin states in InAs/AlSb/GaSb broken-gap quantum wells by solving the Kane model and the Poisson equation self-consistently. The spin states in InAs/AlSb/GaSb quantum wells are quite different from those obtained by the single-band Rashba model due to the electron-hole hybridization. The Rashba spin-splitting of the lowest conduction subband shows an oscillating behavior. The D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation time shows several peaks with increasing the Fermi wavevector. By inserting an AlSb barrier between the InAs and GaSb layers, the hybridization can be greatly reduced. Consequently, the spin orientation, the spin splitting, and the D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation time can be tuned significantly by changing the thickness of the AlSb barrier.
