Probing triple Higgs coupling with machine learning at the LHC

Measuring the triple Higgs coupling is a crucial task in the LHC and future collider experiments. We apply the Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) to the study of the non-resonant Higgs pair production process $pp \to hh$ in the final state with $2b + 2\ell + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$ at the LHC. Although the MPNN can improve the signal significance, it is still challenging to observe such a process at the LHC. We find that a $2σ$ upper bound (including a 10\% systematic uncertainty) on the production cross section of the Higgs pair is 3.7 times the predicted SM cross section at the LHC with the luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$, which will limit the triple Higgs coupling to the range of $[-3,11.5]$.

Magnetic order and its interplay with structure phase transition in van der Waals ferromagnet VI$_3$

Van der Waals magnet VI$_3$ demonstrates intriguing magnetic properties that render it great for use in various applications. However, its microscopic magnetic structure has not been determined yet. Here, we report neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements in VI$_3$ that revealed a ferromagnetic order with the moment direction tilted from the $c$-axis by ~36° at 4 K. A spin reorientation accompanied by a structure distortion within the honeycomb plane is observed at a temperature of ~27 K, before the magnetic order completely disappears at $T_C$ = 50 K. The refined magnetic moment of ~1.3 $μ_B$ at 4 K is considerably lower than the fully ordered spin moment of 2 $μ_B$/ V$^{3+}$, suggesting the presence of a considerable orbital moment antiparallel to the spin moment and strong spin-orbit coupling in VI$_3$. This results in strong magnetoelastic interactions that make the magnetic properties of VI$_3$ easily tunable via strain and pressure.

Economic Dispatch of an Integrated Microgrid Based on the Dynamic Process of CCGT Plant

Intra-day economic dispatch of an integrated microgrid is a fundamental requirement to integrate distributed generators. The dynamic energy flows in cogeneration units present challenges to the energy management of the microgrid. In this paper, a novel approximate dynamic programming (ADP) approach is proposed to solve this problem based on value function approximation, which is distinct with the consideration of the dynamic process constraints of the combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. First, we mathematically formulate the multi-time periods decision problem as a finite-horizon Markov decision process. To deal with the thermodynamic process, an augmented state vector of CCGT is introduced. Second, the proposed VFA-ADP algorithm is employed to derive the near-optimal real-time operation strategies. In addition, to guarantee the monotonicity of piecewise linear function, we apply the SPAR algorithm in the update process. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct experiments with comparisons to some traditional optimization methods. The results indicate that our proposed ADP method achieves better performance on the economic dispatch of the microgrid.

MG-DVD: A Real-time Framework for Malware Variant Detection Based on Dynamic Heterogeneous Graph Learning

Detecting the newly emerging malware variants in real time is crucial for mitigating cyber risks and proactively blocking intrusions. In this paper, we propose MG-DVD, a novel detection framework based on dynamic heterogeneous graph learning, to detect malware variants in real time. Particularly, MG-DVD first models the fine-grained execution event streams of malware variants into dynamic heterogeneous graphs and investigates real-world meta-graphs between malware objects, which can effectively characterize more discriminative malicious evolutionary patterns between malware and their variants. Then, MG-DVD presents two dynamic walk-based heterogeneous graph learning methods to learn more comprehensive representations of malware variants, which significantly reduces the cost of the entire graph retraining. As a result, MG-DVD is equipped with the ability to detect malware variants in real time, and it presents better interpretability by introducing meaningful meta-graphs. Comprehensive experiments on large-scale samples prove that our proposed MG-DVD outperforms state-of-the-art methods in detecting malware variants in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Blockchain and 6G: The Future of Secure and Ubiquitous Communication

The future communication will be characterized by ubiquitous connectivity and security. These features will be essential requirements for the efficient functioning of the futuristic applications. In this paper, in order to highlight the impact of blockchain and 6G on the future communication systems, we categorize these application requirements into two broad groups. In the first category, called Requirement Group I \mbox{(RG-I)}, we include the performance-related needs on data rates, latency, reliability and massive connectivity, while in the second category, called Requirement Group II \mbox{(RG-II)}, we include the security-related needs on data integrity, non-repudiability, and auditability. With blockchain and 6G, the network decentralization and resource sharing would minimize resource under-utilization thereby facilitating RG-I targets. Furthermore, through appropriate selection of blockchain type and consensus algorithms, RG-II needs of 6G applications can also be readily addressed. Through this study, the combination of blockchain and 6G emerges as an elegant solution for secure and ubiquitous future communication.

LearnDA: Learnable Knowledge-Guided Data Augmentation for Event Causality Identification

Modern models for event causality identification (ECI) are mainly based on supervised learning, which are prone to the data lacking problem. Unfortunately, the existing NLP-related augmentation methods cannot directly produce the available data required for this task. To solve the data lacking problem, we introduce a new approach to augment training data for event causality identification, by iteratively generating new examples and classifying event causality in a dual learning framework. On the one hand, our approach is knowledge-guided, which can leverage existing knowledge bases to generate well-formed new sentences. On the other hand, our approach employs a dual mechanism, which is a learnable augmentation framework and can interactively adjust the generation process to generate task-related sentences. Experimental results on two benchmarks EventStoryLine and Causal-TimeBank show that 1) our method can augment suitable task-related training data for ECI; 2) our method outperforms previous methods on EventStoryLine and Causal-TimeBank (+2.5 and +2.1 points on F1 value respectively).

Improving Event Causality Identification via Self-Supervised Representation Learning on External Causal Statement

Current models for event causality identification (ECI) mainly adopt a supervised framework, which heavily rely on labeled data for training. Unfortunately, the scale of current annotated datasets is relatively limited, which cannot provide sufficient support for models to capture useful indicators from causal statements, especially for handing those new, unseen cases. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel approach, shortly named CauSeRL, which leverages external causal statements for event causality identification. First of all, we design a self-supervised framework to learn context-specific causal patterns from external causal statements. Then, we adopt a contrastive transfer strategy to incorporate the learned context-specific causal patterns into the target ECI model. Experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms previous methods on EventStoryLine and Causal-TimeBank (+2.0 and +3.4 points on F1 value respectively).

Path-based knowledge reasoning with textual semantic information for medical knowledge graph completion

Background Knowledge graphs (KGs), especially medical knowledge graphs, are often significantly incomplete, so it necessitating a demand for medical knowledge graph completion (MedKGC). MedKGC can find new facts based on the exited knowledge in the KGs. The path-based knowledge reasoning algorithm is one of the most important approaches to this task. This type of method has received great attention in recent years because of its high performance and interpretability. In fact, traditional methods such as path ranking algorithm (PRA) take the paths between an entity pair as atomic features. However, the medical KGs are very sparse, which makes it difficult to model effective semantic representation for extremely sparse path features. The sparsity in the medical KGs is mainly reflected in the long-tailed distribution of entities and paths. Previous methods merely consider the context structure in the paths of the knowledge graph and ignore the textual semantics of the symbols in the path. Therefore, their performance cannot be further improved due to the two aspects of entity sparseness and path sparseness. To address the above issues, this paper proposes two novel path-based reasoning methods to solve the sparsity issues of entity and path respectively, which adopts the textual semantic information of entities and paths for MedKGC. By using the pre-trained model BERT, combining the textual semantic representations of the entities and the relationships, we model the task of symbolic reasoning in the medical KG as a numerical computing issue in textual semantic representation.

Secure Weighted Aggregation for Federated Learning

The pervasive adoption of Internet-connected digital services has led to a growing concern in the personal data privacy of their customers. On the other hand, machine learning (ML) techniques have been widely adopted by digital service providers to improve operational productivity and customer satisfaction. ML inevitably accesses and processes users' personal data, which could potentially breach the relevant privacy protection regulations if not performed carefully. The situation is exacerbated by the cloud-based implementation of digital services when user data are captured and stored in distributed locations, hence aggregation of the user data for ML could be a serious breach of privacy regulations. In this backdrop, Federated Learning (FL) is an emerging area that allows ML on distributed data without the data leaving their stored location. However, depending on the nature of the digital services, data captured at different locations may carry different significance to the business operation, hence a weighted aggregation will be highly desirable for enhancing the quality of the FL-learned model. Furthermore, to prevent leakage of user data from the aggregated gradients, cryptographic mechanisms are needed to allow secure aggregation of FL. In this paper, we propose a privacy-enhanced FL scheme for supporting secure weighted aggregation. Besides, by devising a verification protocol based on Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP), the proposed scheme is capable of guarding against fraudulent messages from FL participants. Experimental results show that our scheme is practical and secure. Compared to existing FL approaches, our scheme achieves secure weighted aggregation with an additional security guarantee against fraudulent messages with an affordable 1.2 times runtime overheads and 1.3 times communication costs.

TextFlint: Unified Multilingual Robustness Evaluation Toolkit for Natural Language Processing

Various robustness evaluation methodologies from different perspectives have been proposed for different natural language processing (NLP) tasks. These methods have often focused on either universal or task-specific generalization capabilities. In this work, we propose a multilingual robustness evaluation platform for NLP tasks (TextFlint) that incorporates universal text transformation, task-specific transformation, adversarial attack, subpopulation, and their combinations to provide comprehensive robustness analysis. TextFlint enables practitioners to automatically evaluate their models from all aspects or to customize their evaluations as desired with just a few lines of code. To guarantee user acceptability, all the text transformations are linguistically based, and we provide a human evaluation for each one. TextFlint generates complete analytical reports as well as targeted augmented data to address the shortcomings of the model's robustness. To validate TextFlint's utility, we performed large-scale empirical evaluations (over 67,000 evaluations) on state-of-the-art deep learning models, classic supervised methods, and real-world systems. Almost all models showed significant performance degradation, including a decline of more than 50% of BERT's prediction accuracy on tasks such as aspect-level sentiment classification, named entity recognition, and natural language inference. Therefore, we call for the robustness to be included in the model evaluation, so as to promote the healthy development of NLP technology.

Generating Adversarial yet Inconspicuous Patches with a Single Image

Deep neural networks have been shown vulnerable toadversarial patches, where exotic patterns can resultin models wrong prediction. Nevertheless, existing ap-proaches to adversarial patch generation hardly con-sider the contextual consistency between patches andthe image background, causing such patches to be eas-ily detected and adversarial attacks to fail. On the otherhand, these methods require a large amount of data fortraining, which is computationally expensive. To over-come these challenges, we propose an approach to gen-erate adversarial yet inconspicuous patches with onesingle image. In our approach, adversarial patches areproduced in a coarse-to-fine way with multiple scalesof generators and discriminators. Contextual informa-tion is encoded during the Min-Max training to makepatches consistent with surroundings. The selection ofpatch location is based on the perceptual sensitivity ofvictim models. Through extensive experiments, our ap-proach shows strong attacking ability in both the white-box and black-box setting. Experiments on saliency de-tection and user evaluation indicate that our adversar-ial patches can evade human observations, demonstratethe inconspicuousness of our approach. Lastly, we showthat our approach preserves the attack ability in thephysical world.

Recent Advances in Adversarial Training for Adversarial Robustness

Adversarial training is one of the most effective approaches defending against adversarial examples for deep learning models. Unlike other defense strategies, adversarial training aims to promote the robustness of models intrinsically. During the last few years, adversarial training has been studied and discussed from various aspects. A variety of improvements and developments of adversarial training are proposed, which were, however, neglected in existing surveys. For the first time in this survey, we systematically review the recent progress on adversarial training for adversarial robustness with a novel taxonomy. Then we discuss the generalization problems in adversarial training from three perspectives. Finally, we highlight the challenges which are not fully tackled and present potential future directions.

Fair and Differentially Private Distributed Frequency Estimation

In order to remain competitive, Internet companies collect and analyse user data for the purpose of improving user experiences. Frequency estimation is a widely used statistical tool which could potentially conflict with the relevant privacy regulations. Privacy preserving analytic methods based on differential privacy have been proposed, which either require a large user base or a trusted server; hence may give big companies an unfair advantage while handicapping smaller organizations in their growth opportunity. To address this issue, this paper proposes a fair privacy-preserving sampling-based frequency estimation method and provides a relation between its privacy guarantee, output accuracy, and number of participants. We designed decentralized privacy-preserving aggregation mechanisms using multi-party computation technique and established that, for a limited number of participants and a fixed privacy level, our mechanisms perform better than those that are based on traditional perturbation methods; hence, provide smaller companies a fair growth opportunity. We further propose an architectural model to support weighted aggregation in order to achieve higher accuracy estimate to cater for users with different privacy requirements. Compared to the unweighted aggregation, our method provides a more accurate estimate. Extensive experiments are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Joint Transmit Precoding and Reflect Beamforming Design for IRS-Assisted MIMO Cognitive Radio Systems

Cognitive radio (CR) is an effective solution to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of wireless communications by allowing the secondary users (SUs) to share spectrum with primary users (PUs). Meanwhile, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been recently proposed as a promising approach to enhance SE and energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems through intelligently reconfiguring the channel environment. In this paper, we consider an IRS-assisted downlink CR system, in which a secondary access point (SAP) communicates with multiple SUs without affecting multiple PUs in the primary network and all nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Our design objective is to maximize the achievable weighted sum rate (WSR) of SUs subject to the total transmit power constraint at the SAP and the interference constraints at PUs, by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding at the SAP and the reflecting coefficients at the IRS. To deal with the complex objective function, the problem is reformulated by employing the well-known weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) method and an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, a special scenario with only one PU is considered and AO algorithm is adopted again. It is worth mentioning that the proposed algorithm has a much lower computational complexity than the above algorithm without the performance loss. Finally, some numerical simulations have been provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other benchmark schemes.

CogNet: Bridging Linguistic Knowledge, World Knowledge and Commonsense Knowledge

In this paper, we present CogNet, a knowledge base (KB) dedicated to integrating three types of knowledge: (1) linguistic knowledge from FrameNet, which schematically describes situations, objects and events. (2) world knowledge from YAGO, Freebase, DBpedia and Wikidata, which provides explicit knowledge about specific instances. (3) commonsense knowledge from ConceptNet, which describes implicit general facts. To model these different types of knowledge consistently, we introduce a three-level unified frame-styled representation architecture. To integrate free-form commonsense knowledge with other structured knowledge, we propose a strategy that combines automated labeling and crowdsourced annotation. At present, CogNet integrates 1,000+ semantic frames from linguistic KBs, 20,000,000+ frame instances from world KBs, as well as 90,000+ commonsense assertions from commonsense KBs. All these data can be easily queried and explored on our online platform, and free to download in RDF format for utilization under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license. The demo and data are available at http://cognet.top/.

6G Downlink Transmission via Rate Splitting Space Division Multiple Access Based on Grouped Code Index Modulation

A novel rate splitting space division multiple access (SDMA) scheme based on grouped code index modulation (GrCIM) is proposed for the sixth generation (6G) downlink transmission. The proposed RSMA-GrCIM scheme transmits information to multiple user equipments (UEs) through the space division multiple access (SDMA) technique, and exploits code index modulation for rate splitting. Since the CIM scheme conveys information bits via the index of the selected Walsh code and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal, our RSMA scheme transmits the private messages of each user through the indices, and the common messages via the BPSK signal. Moreover, the Walsh code set is grouped into several orthogonal subsets to eliminate the interference from other users. A maximum likelihood (ML) detector is used to recovery the source bits, and a mathematical analysis is provided for the upper bound bit error ratio (BER) of each user. Comparisons are also made between our proposed scheme and the traditional SDMA scheme in spectrum utilization, number of available UEs, etc. Numerical results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SDMA-GrCIM scheme.

A Comprehensive Survey of 6G Wireless Communications

While fifth-generation (5G) communications are being rolled out worldwide, sixth-generation (6G) communications have attracted much attention from both the industry and the academia. Compared with 5G, 6G will have a wider frequency band, higher transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, greater connection capacity, shorter delay, broader coverage, and more robust anti-interference capability to satisfy various network requirements. This survey presents an insightful understanding of 6G wireless communications by introducing requirements, features, critical technologies, challenges, and applications. First, we give an overview of 6G from perspectives of technologies, security and privacy, and applications. Subsequently, we introduce various 6G technologies and their existing challenges in detail, e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), intelligent surfaces, THz, space-air-ground-sea integrated network, cell-free massive MIMO, etc. Because of these technologies, 6G is expected to outperform existing wireless communication systems regarding the transmission rate, latency, global coverage, etc. Next, we discuss security and privacy techniques that can be applied to protect data in 6G. Since edge devices are expected to gain popularity soon, the vast amount of generated data and frequent data exchange make the leakage of data easily. Finally, we predict real-world applications built on the technologies and features of 6G; for example, smart healthcare, smart city, and smart manufacturing will be implemented by taking advantage of AI.
