Secrecy Rate Maximization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Millimeter Wave System with Low-resolution DAC

In this letter, we investigate the secrecy rate of an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) system with hardware limitations. Compared to the RIS-aided systems in most existing works, we consider the case of the RIS-aided mmWave system with low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (LDACs). We formulate a secrecy rate maximization problem hardware constraints. Then by optimizing the RIS phase shift and the transmit beamforming to maximize the secrecy rate. Due to the nonconvexity of the problem, the formulated problem is intractable. To handle the problem, an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is proposed. Specifically, we first use the successive convex approximation (SCA) method to obtain the transmit beamforming. Then the element-wise block coordinate descent (BCD) method is used to obtain the RIS phase shift. Numerical results demonstrate that the RIS can mitigate the hardware loss, and the proposed AO-based algorithm with low complexity outperformances the baselines.

Privacy-Preserving Blockchain-Based Federated Learning for IoT Devices

Home appliance manufacturers strive to obtain feedback from users to improve their products and services to build a smart home system. To help manufacturers develop a smart home system, we design a federated learning (FL) system leveraging the reputation mechanism to assist home appliance manufacturers to train a machine learning model based on customers' data. Then, manufacturers can predict customers' requirements and consumption behaviors in the future. The working flow of the system includes two stages: in the first stage, customers train the initial model provided by the manufacturer using both the mobile phone and the mobile edge computing (MEC) server. Customers collect data from various home appliances using phones, and then they download and train the initial model with their local data. After deriving local models, customers sign on their models and send them to the blockchain. In case customers or manufacturers are malicious, we use the blockchain to replace the centralized aggregator in the traditional FL system. Since records on the blockchain are untampered, malicious customers or manufacturers' activities are traceable. In the second stage, manufacturers select customers or organizations as miners for calculating the averaged model using received models from customers. By the end of the crowdsourcing task, one of the miners, who is selected as the temporary leader, uploads the model to the blockchain. To protect customers' privacy and improve the test accuracy, we enforce differential privacy on the extracted features and propose a new normalization technique. We experimentally demonstrate that our normalization technique outperforms batch normalization when features are under differential privacy protection. In addition, to attract more customers to participate in the crowdsourcing FL task, we design an incentive mechanism to award participants.

Spectrum Sharing for 6G Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks Based on NOMA and Cognitive Radio

The explosive growth of bandwidth hungry Internet applications has led to the rapid development of new generation mobile network technologies that are expected to provide broadband access to the Internet in a pervasive manner. For example, 6G networks are capable of providing high-speed network access by exploiting higher frequency spectrum; high-throughout satellite communication services are also adopted to achieve pervasive coverage in remote and isolated areas. In order to enable seamless access, Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks (ISTCN) has emerged as an important research area. ISTCN aims to provide high speed and pervasive network services by integrating broadband terrestrial mobile networks with satellite communication networks. As terrestrial mobile networks began to use higher frequency spectrum (between 3GHz to 40GHz) which overlaps with that of satellite communication (4GHz to 8GHz for C band and 26GHz to 40GHz for Ka band), there are opportunities and challenges. On one hand, satellite terminals can potentially access terrestrial networks in an integrated manner; on the other hand, there will be more congestion and interference in this spectrum, hence more efficient spectrum management techniques are required. In this paper, we propose a new technique to improve spectrum sharing performance by introducing Non-orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NOMA) and Cognitive Radio (CR) in the spectrum sharing of ISTCN. In essence, NOMA technology improves spectrum efficiency by allowing different users to transmit on the same carrier and distinguishing users by user power levels while CR technology improves spectrum efficiency through dynamic spectrum sharing. Furthermore, some open researches and challenges in ISTCN will be discussed.

Observation of robust edge superconductivity in Fe(Se,Te) under strong magnetic perturbation

The iron-chalcogenide high temperature superconductor Fe(Se,Te) (FST) has been reported to exhibit complex magnetic ordering and nontrivial band topology which may lead to novel superconducting phenomena. However, the recent studies have so far been largely concentrated on its band and spin structures while its mesoscopic electronic and magnetic response, crucial for future device applications, has not been explored experimentally. Here, we used scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy for its sensitivity to both local diamagnetic susceptibility and current distribution in order to image the superfluid density and supercurrent in FST. We found that in FST with 10% interstitial Fe, whose magnetic structure was heavily disrupted, bulk superconductivity was significantly suppressed whereas edge still preserved strong superconducting diamagnetism. The edge dominantly carried supercurrent despite of a very long magnetic penetration depth. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density and supercurrent distribution were distinctively different between the edge and the bulk. Our Heisenberg modeling showed that magnetic dopants stabilize anti-ferromagnetic spin correlation along the edge, which may contribute towards its robust superconductivity. Our observations hold implication for FST as potential platforms for topological quantum computation and superconducting spintronics.

AI-GAN: Attack-Inspired Generation of Adversarial Examples

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial examples, which are crafted by adding imperceptible perturbations to inputs. Recently different attacks and strategies have been proposed, but how to generate adversarial examples perceptually realistic and more efficiently remains unsolved. This paper proposes a novel framework called Attack-Inspired GAN (AI-GAN), where a generator, a discriminator, and an attacker are trained jointly. Once trained, it can generate adversarial perturbations efficiently given input images and target classes. Through extensive experiments on several popular datasets \eg MNIST and CIFAR-10, AI-GAN achieves high attack success rates and reduces generation time significantly in various settings. Moreover, for the first time, AI-GAN successfully scales to complicated datasets \eg CIFAR-100 with around $90\%$ success rates among all classes.

Sum-Rate Maximization for UAV-assisted Visible Light Communications using NOMA: Swarm Intelligence meets Machine Learning

As the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into visible light communications (VLC) can offer many benefits for massive-connectivity applications and services in 5G and beyond, this work considers a UAV-assisted VLC using non-orthogonal multiple-access. More specifically, we formulate a joint problem of power allocation and UAV's placement to maximize the sum rate of all users, subject to constraints on power allocation, quality of service of users, and UAV's position. Since the problem is non-convex and NP-hard in general, it is difficult to be solved optimally. Moreover, the problem is not easy to be solved by conventional approaches, e.g., coordinate descent algorithms, due to channel modeling in VLC. Therefore, we propose using harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm to solve the formulated problem and obtain an efficient solution. We then use the HHO algorithm together with artificial neural networks to propose a design which can be used in real-time applications and avoid falling into the "local minima" trap in conventional trainers. Numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and further demonstrate that the proposed algorithm/HHO trainer is superior to several alternative schemes and existing metaheuristic algorithms.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided MISO Uplink Communication Network: Feasibility and Power Minimization for Perfect and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, we consider the weighted sum-power minimization under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints in the multi-user multi-input-single-output (MISO) uplink wireless network assisted by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). We perform a comprehensive investigation on various aspects of this problem. First, when users have sufficient transmit powers, we present a new sufficient condition guaranteeing arbitrary information rate constraints. This result strengthens the feasibility condition in existing literature. Then, we design novel penalty dual decomposition (PDD) based and nonlinear equality constrained alternative direction method of multipliers (neADMM) based solutions to tackle the IRS-dependent-QoS-constraints, which effectively solve the feasibility check and power minimization problems. Besides, we further extend our proposals to the cases where channel status information (CSI) is imperfect and develop an online stochastic algorithm that satisfy QoS constraints stochastically without requiring prior knowledge of CSI errors. Extensive numerical results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

ANL: Anti-Noise Learning for Cross-Domain Person Re-Identification

Due to the lack of labels and the domain diversities, it is a challenge to study person re-identification in the cross-domain setting. An admirable method is to optimize the target model by assigning pseudo-labels for unlabeled samples through clustering. Usually, attributed to the domain gaps, the pre-trained source domain model cannot extract appropriate target domain features, which will dramatically affect the clustering performance and the accuracy of pseudo-labels. Extensive label noise will lead to sub-optimal solutions doubtlessly. To solve these problems, we propose an Anti-Noise Learning (ANL) approach, which contains two modules. The Feature Distribution Alignment (FDA) module is designed to gather the id-related samples and disperse id-unrelated samples, through the camera-wise contrastive learning and adversarial adaptation. Creating a friendly cross-feature foundation for clustering that is to reduce clustering noise. Besides, the Reliable Sample Selection (RSS) module utilizes an Auxiliary Model to correct noisy labels and select reliable samples for the Main Model. In order to effectively utilize the outlier information generated by the clustering algorithm and RSS module, we train these samples at the instance-level. The experiments demonstrate that our proposed ANL framework can effectively reduce the domain conflicts and alleviate the influence of noisy samples, as well as superior performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

Secure Hot Path Crowdsourcing with Local Differential Privacy under Fog Computing Architecture

Crowdsourcing plays an essential role in the Internet of Things (IoT) for data collection, where a group of workers is equipped with Internet-connected geolocated devices to collect sensor data for marketing or research purpose. In this paper, we consider crowdsourcing these worker's hot travel path. Each worker is required to report his real-time location information, which is sensitive and has to be protected. Encryption-based methods are the most direct way to protect the location, but not suitable for resource-limited devices. Besides, local differential privacy is a strong privacy concept and has been deployed in many software systems. However, the local differential privacy technology needs a large number of participants to ensure the accuracy of the estimation, which is not always the case for crowdsourcing. To solve this problem, we proposed a trie-based iterative statistic method, which combines additive secret sharing and local differential privacy technologies. The proposed method has excellent performance even with a limited number of participants without the need of complex computation. Specifically, the proposed method contains three main components: iterative statistics, adaptive sampling, and secure reporting. We theoretically analyze the effectiveness of the proposed method and perform extensive experiments to show that the proposed method not only provides a strict privacy guarantee, but also significantly improves the performance from the previous existing solutions.

A GCICA Grant-Free Random Access Scheme for M2M Communications in Crowded Massive MIMO Systems

A high success rate of grant-free random access scheme is proposed to support massive access for machine-to-machine communications in massive multipleinput multiple-output systems. This scheme allows active user equipments (UEs) to transmit their modulated uplink messages along with super pilots consisting of multiple sub-pilots to a base station (BS). Then, the BS performs channel state information (CSI) estimation and uplink message decoding by utilizing a proposed graph combined clustering independent component analysis (GCICA) decoding algorithm, and then employs the estimated CSIs to detect active UEs by utilizing the characteristic of asymptotic favorable propagation of massive MIMO channel. We call this proposed scheme as GCICA based random access (GCICA-RA) scheme. We analyze the successful access probability, missed detection probability, and uplink throughput of the GCICA-RA scheme. Numerical results show that, the GCICA-RA scheme significantly improves the successful access probability and uplink throughput, decreases missed detection probability, and provides low CSI estimation error at the same time.

Secure Beamforming for Multiple Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces Aided mmWave Systems

In this letter, secure beamforming in a multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) system is investigated. In this system, the secrecy rate is maximized by controlling the on-off status of each IRS as well as optimizing the phase shift matrix of the IRSs. This problem is posed as a joint optimization problem of transmit beamforming and IRS control, whose goal is to maximize the secrecy rate under the total transmission power and unit-modulus constraints. The problem is difficult to solve optimally due to the nonconvexity of constraint conditions and coupled variables. To deal with this problem, we propose an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and manifold optimization (MO) technologies. Numerical simulations show that the proposed AO-based algorithm can effectively improve the secrecy rate and outperforms the traditional single IRS-aided scheme.

To solve the problem, we propose a novel alternating manifold optimization based beamforming algorithm. Simulation results show that our proposed optimization algorithm outperforms existing algorithms significantly in improving the weighted sum-rate of the wireless communication system.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Secure Wireless Communications

In this paper, we study an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided wireless secure communication system for physical layer security, where an IRS is deployed to adjust its surface reflecting elements to guarantee secure communication of multiple legitimate users in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Aiming to improve the system secrecy rate, a design problem for jointly optimizing the base station (BS)'s beamforming and the IRS's reflecting beamforming is formulated given the different quality of service (QoS) requirements and time-varying channel condition. As the system is highly dynamic and complex, and it is challenging to address the non-convex optimization problem, a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based secure beamforming approach is firstly proposed to achieve the optimal beamforming policy against eavesdroppers in dynamic environments. Furthermore, post-decision state (PDS) and prioritized experience replay (PER) schemes are utilized to enhance the learning efficiency and secrecy performance. Specifically, PDS is capable of tracing the environment dynamic characteristics and adjust the beamforming policy accordingly. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed deep PDS-PER learning-based secure beamforming approach can significantly improve the system secrecy rate and QoS satisfaction probability in IRS-aided secure communication systems.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Anti-Jamming Communications Based on Reinforcement Learning

Malicious jamming launched by smart jammer, which attacks legitimate transmissions has been regarded as one of the critical security challenges in wireless communications. Thus, this paper exploits intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance anti-jamming communication performance and mitigate jamming interference by adjusting the surface reflecting elements at the IRS. Aiming to enhance the communication performance against smart jammer, an optimization problem for jointly optimizing power allocation at the base station (BS) and reflecting beamforming at the IRS is formulated. As the jamming model and jamming behavior are dynamic and unknown, a win or learn fast policy hill-climbing (WoLF-PHC) learning approach is proposed to jointly optimize the anti-jamming power allocation and reflecting beamforming strategy without the knowledge of the jamming model. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed anti-jamming based-learning approach can efficiently improve both the IRS-assisted system rate and transmission protection level compared with existing solutions.

A Blockchain-Based Approach for Saving and Tracking Differential-Privacy Cost

An increasing amount of users' sensitive information is now being collected for analytics purposes. To protect users' privacy, differential privacy has been widely studied in the literature. Specifically, a differentially private algorithm adds noise to the true answer of a query to generate a noisy response. As a result, the information about the dataset leaked by the noisy output is bounded by the privacy parameter. Oftentimes, a dataset needs to be used for answering multiple queries (e.g., for multiple analytics tasks), so the level of privacy protection may degrade as more queries are answered. Thus, it is crucial to keep track of the privacy spending which should not exceed the given privacy budget. Moreover, if a query has been answered before and is asked again on the same dataset, we may reuse the previous noisy response for the current query to save the privacy cost. In view of the above, we design and implement a blockchain-based system for tracking and saving differential-privacy cost. Blockchain provides a distributed immutable ledger that records each query's type, the noisy response used to answer each query, the associated noise level added to the true query result, and the remaining privacy budget in our system. Furthermore, since the blockchain records the noisy response used to answer each query, we also design an algorithm to reuse previous noisy response if the same query is asked repeatedly. Specifically, considering that different requests of the same query may have different privacy requirements, our algorithm (via a rigorous proof) is able to set the optimal reuse fraction of the old noisy response and add new noise (if necessary) to minimize the accumulated privacy cost. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the privacy cost significantly without compromising data accuracy.

Local Differential Privacy based Federated Learning for Internet of Things

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is a promising branch of the Internet of Things. IoV simulates a large variety of crowdsourcing applications such as Waze, Uber, and Amazon Mechanical Turk, etc. Users of these applications report the real-time traffic information to the cloud server which trains a machine learning model based on traffic information reported by users for intelligent traffic management. However, crowdsourcing application owners can easily infer users' location information, which raises severe location privacy concerns of the users. In addition, as the number of vehicles increases, the frequent communication between vehicles and the cloud server incurs unexpected amount of communication cost. To avoid the privacy threat and reduce the communication cost, in this paper, we propose to integrate federated learning and local differential privacy (LDP) to facilitate the crowdsourcing applications to achieve the machine learning model. Specifically, we propose four LDP mechanisms to perturb gradients generated by vehicles. The Three-Outputs mechanism is proposed which introduces three different output possibilities to deliver a high accuracy when the privacy budget is small. The output possibilities of Three-Outputs can be encoded with two bits to reduce the communication cost. Besides, to maximize the performance when the privacy budget is large, an optimal piecewise mechanism (PM-OPT) is proposed. We further propose a suboptimal mechanism (PM-SUB) with a simple formula and comparable utility to PM-OPT. Then, we build a novel hybrid mechanism by combining Three-Outputs and PM-SUB.
