Blockchain-Based Approach for Securing Spectrum Trading in Multibeam Satellite Systems

This paper presents a blockchain-based approach for securing spectrum sharing in multi-beam satellite systems. Satellite spectrum is a scarce resource that requires highly efficient management schemes for optimized sharing by network users. However, spectrum sharing is vulnerable to attacks by malicious protocol participants. In order to ensure efficient spectrum management in the face of dishonest satellite users or cyber attackers, it is important for spectrum sharing mechanism to provide transparency and traceability of the trading process so as to enable the system to detect, and hence eliminate, unauthorized access by malicious users. We address these requirements by proposing the use of blockchain which, apart from its ability to provide transparency and traceability, ensures an immutable means for keeping track of user trading reputation. Besides, in order to address the practical constraints of heterogeneous user nodes, we also propose the use of edge computing to support users with limited computing power. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based spectrum trading framework and, based on which, a multibeam satellite spectrum sharing algorithm for interference pricing and heterogeneous spectrum demands is devised to improve the efficiency of satellite spectrum. By leveraging on the system characteristics of blockchain, a dynamic spectrum sharing mechanism with traceability, openness and transparency for whole trading process is presented. Numerical results are also provided to evaluate the system benefits and spectrum pricing of the proposed mechanism.

Resource Allocation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Cooperative Communications

This paper investigates an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cooperative communication network, where the IRS exploits large reflecting elements to proactively steer the incident radio-frequency wave towards destination terminals (DTs). As the number of reflecting elements increases, the reflection resource allocation (RRA) will become urgently needed in this context, which is due to the non-ignorable energy consumption. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to realize the RRA besides the active-passive beamforming design, where RRA is based on the introduced modular IRS architecture. The modular IRS consists with multiple modules, each of which has multiple reflecting elements and is equipped with a smart controller, all the controllers can communicate with each other in a point-to-point fashion via fiber links. Consequently, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum SINR at DTs, subject to the module size constraint and both individual source terminal (ST) transmit power and the reflecting coefficients constraints. Whereas this problem is NP-hard due to the module size constraint, we develop an approximate solution by introducing the mixed row block $\ell_{1,F}$-norm to transform it into a suitable semidefinite relaxation. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the meaningfulness of the introduced modular IRS architecture.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Massive Access Management for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications

With the rapid deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT), fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G networks are required to support massive access of a huge number of devices over limited radio spectrum radio. In wireless networks, different devices have various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, ranging from ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) to high transmission data rates. In this context, we present a joint energy-efficient subchannel assignment and power control approach to manage massive access requests while maximizing network energy efficiency (EE) and guaranteeing different QoS requirements. The latency constraint is transformed into a data rate constraint which makes the optimization problem tractable before modelling it as a multi-agent reinforcement learning problem. A distributed cooperative massive access approach based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is proposed to address the problem while meeting both reliability and latency constraints on URLLC services in massive access scenario. In addition, transfer learning and cooperative learning mechanisms are employed to enable communication links to work cooperatively in a distributed manner, which enhances the network performance and access success probability. Simulation results clearly show that the proposed distributed cooperative learning approach outperforms other existing approaches in terms of meeting EE and improving the transmission success probability in massive access scenario.

A Stackelberg Game Approach to Resource Allocation for IRS-aided Communications

It is known that the capacity of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cellular network can be effectively improved by reflecting the incident signals from the transmitter in a low-cost passive reflecting way. Nevertheless, in the actual network operation, the base station (BS) and IRS may belong to different operators, consequently, the IRS is reluctant to help the BS without any payment. Therefore, this paper investigates price-based reflection resource (elements) allocation strategies for an IRS-aided multiuser multiple-input and single-output (MISO) downlink communication systems, in which all transmissions over the same frequency band. Assuming that the IRS is composed with multiple modules, each of which is attached with a smart controller, thus, the states (active/idle) of module can be operated by its controller, and all controllers can be communicated with each other via fiber links. A Stackelberg game-based alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming of the active modules. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed algorithm. It is shown that the proposed scheme is effective in the utilities of both the BS and IRS.

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Intelligent 6G Networks

With the rapid development of smart terminals and infrastructures, as well as diversified applications (e.g., virtual and augmented reality, remote surgery and holographic projection) with colorful requirements, current networks (e.g., 4G and upcoming 5G networks) may not be able to completely meet quickly rising traffic demands. Accordingly, efforts from both industry and academia have already been put to the research on 6G networks. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been utilized as a new paradigm for the design and optimization of 6G networks with a high level of intelligence. Therefore, this article proposes an AI-enabled intelligent architecture for 6G networks to realize knowledge discovery, smart resource management, automatic network adjustment and intelligent service provisioning, where the architecture is divided into four layers: intelligent sensing layer, data mining and analytics layer, intelligent control layer and smart application layer. We then review and discuss the applications of AI techniques for 6G networks and elaborate how to employ the AI techniques to efficiently and effectively optimize the network performance, including AI-empowered mobile edge computing, intelligent mobility and handover management, and smart spectrum management. Moreover, we highlight important future research directions and potential solutions for AI-enabled intelligent 6G networks, including computation efficiency, algorithms robustness, hardware development and energy management.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Joint Processing Coordinated Multipoint Transmission

This paper investigates intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multicell wireless networks, where an IRS is deployed to assist the joint processing coordinated multipoint (JP-CoMP) transmission from multiple base stations (BSs) to multiple cell-edge users. By taking into account the fairness among cell-edge users, we aim at maximizing the minimum achievable rate of cell-edge users by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BSs and the phase shifts at the IRS. As a compromise approach, we transform the non-convex max-min problem into an equivalent form based on the mean-square error method, which facilities the design of an efficient suboptimal iterative algorithm. In addition, we investigate two scenarios, namely the single-user system and the multiuser system. For the former scenario, the optimal transmit beamforming is obtained based on the dual subgradient method, while the phase shift matrix is optimized based on the Majorization-Minimization method. For the latter scenario, the transmit beamforming matrix and phase shift matrix are obtained by the second-order cone programming and semidefinite relaxation techniques, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate the significant performance improvement achieved by deploying an IRS. Furthermore, the proposed JP-CoMP design significantly outperforms the conventional coordinated scheduling/coordinated beamforming coordinated multipoint (CS/CB-CoMP) design in terms of max-min rate.

Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning for UAV-Enabled Networks: Learning-Based Joint Scheduling and Resource Management

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are capable of serving as flying base stations (BSs) for supporting data collection, artificial intelligence (AI) model training, and wireless communications. However, due to the privacy concerns of devices and limited computation or communication resource of UAVs, it is impractical to send raw data of devices to UAV servers for model training. Moreover, due to the dynamic channel condition and heterogeneous computing capacity of devices in UAV-enabled networks, the reliability and efficiency of data sharing require to be further improved. In this paper, we develop an asynchronous federated learning (AFL) framework for multi-UAV-enabled networks, which can provide asynchronous distributed computing by enabling model training locally without transmitting raw sensitive data to UAV servers. The device selection strategy is also introduced into the AFL framework to keep the low-quality devices from affecting the learning efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, we propose an asynchronous advantage actor-critic (A3C) based joint device selection, UAVs placement, and resource management algorithm to enhance the federated convergence speed and accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed framework and algorithm achieve higher learning accuracy and faster federated execution time compared to other existing solutions.

Uplink Achievable Rate Maximization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Millimeter Wave Systems with Resolution-Adaptive ADCs

In this letter, we investigate the uplink of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-user system. In the considered system, however, problems with hardware cost and power consumption arise when massive antenna arrays coupled with power-demanding analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are employed. To account for practical hardware complexity, we consider that the access point (AP) is equipped with resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). We maximize the achievable rate under hardware constraints by jointly optimizing the ADC quantization bits, the RIS phase shifts, and the beam selection matrix. Due to the non-convexity of the feasible set and objective function, the formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to solve. To efficiently tackle this problem, a block coordinated descent (BCD)-based algorithm is proposed. Simulations demonstrate that an RIS can mitigate the hardware loss due to use of RADCs, and that the proposed BCD-based algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms.

Joint Entity and Relation Extraction with Set Prediction Networks

The joint entity and relation extraction task aims to extract all relational triples from a sentence. In essence, the relational triples contained in a sentence are unordered. However, previous seq2seq based models require to convert the set of triples into a sequence in the training phase. To break this bottleneck, we treat joint entity and relation extraction as a direct set prediction problem, so that the extraction model can get rid of the burden of predicting the order of multiple triples. To solve this set prediction problem, we propose networks featured by transformers with non-autoregressive parallel decoding. Unlike autoregressive approaches that generate triples one by one in a certain order, the proposed networks directly output the final set of triples in one shot. Furthermore, we also design a set-based loss that forces unique predictions via bipartite matching. Compared with cross-entropy loss that highly penalizes small shifts in triple order, the proposed bipartite matching loss is invariant to any permutation of predictions; thus, it can provide the proposed networks with a more accurate training signal by ignoring triple order and focusing on relation types and entities. Experiments on two benchmark datasets show that our proposed model significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art methods. Recent Advances in Understanding Adversarial Robustness of Deep Neural Networks

Adversarial examples are inevitable on the road of pervasive applications of deep neural networks (DNN). Imperceptible perturbations applied on natural samples can lead DNN-based classifiers to output wrong prediction with fair confidence score. It is increasingly important to obtain models with high robustness that are resistant to adversarial examples. In this paper, we survey recent advances in how to understand such intriguing property, i.e. adversarial robustness, from different perspectives. We give preliminary definitions on what adversarial attacks and robustness are. After that, we study frequently-used benchmarks and mention theoretically-proved bounds for adversarial robustness. We then provide an overview on analyzing correlations among adversarial robustness and other critical indicators of DNN models. Lastly, we introduce recent arguments on potential costs of adversarial training which have attracted wide attention from the research community.

KnowDis: Knowledge Enhanced Data Augmentation for Event Causality Detection via Distant Supervision

Modern models of event causality detection (ECD) are mainly based on supervised learning from small hand-labeled corpora. However, hand-labeled training data is expensive to produce, low coverage of causal expressions and limited in size, which makes supervised methods hard to detect causal relations between events. To solve this data lacking problem, we investigate a data augmentation framework for ECD, dubbed as Knowledge Enhanced Distant Data Augmentation (KnowDis). Experimental results on two benchmark datasets EventStoryLine corpus and Causal-TimeBank show that 1) KnowDis can augment available training data assisted with the lexical and causal commonsense knowledge for ECD via distant supervision, and 2) our method outperforms previous methods by a large margin assisted with automatically labeled training data.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Aided mmWave NOMA: Joint Power Allocation,Phase Shifts, and Hybrid Beamforming Optimization

In this paper, an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is considered. In particular, we consider an RIS-aided mmWave-NOMA downlink system with a hybrid beamforming structure. To maximize the achievable sum-rate under a minimum rate constraint for the users and a minimum transmit power constraint, a joint RIS phase shifts, hybrid beamforming, and power allocation problem is formulated. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm. Specifically, first, the non-convex problem is transformed into three subproblems, i.e., power allocation, joint phase shifts and analog beamforming optimization, and digital beamforming design. Then, we solve the power allocation problem under fixed phase shifts of the RIS and hybrid beamforming. Finally, given the power allocation matrix, an alternating manifold optimization (AMO)-based method and a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method are utilized to design the phase shifts, analog beamforming, and transmit beamforming, respectively. Numerical results reveal that the proposed alternating optimization algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art schemes in terms of sum-rate. Moreover, compared to a conventional mmWave-NOMA system without RIS, the proposed RIS-aided mmWave-NOMA system is capable of improving the achievable sum-rate of the system.

Pre-trained Language Model Based Active Learning for Sentence Matching

Active learning is able to significantly reduce the annotation cost for data-driven techniques. However, previous active learning approaches for natural language processing mainly depend on the entropy-based uncertainty criterion, and ignore the characteristics of natural language. In this paper, we propose a pre-trained language model based active learning approach for sentence matching. Differing from previous active learning, it can provide linguistic criteria to measure instances and help select more efficient instances for annotation. Experiments demonstrate our approach can achieve greater accuracy with fewer labeled training instances.

Deep Robust Multilevel Semantic Cross-Modal Hashing

Hashing based cross-modal retrieval has recently made significant progress. But straightforward embedding data from different modalities into a joint Hamming space will inevitably produce false codes due to the intrinsic modality discrepancy and noises. We present a novel Robust Multilevel Semantic Hashing (RMSH) for more accurate cross-modal retrieval. It seeks to preserve fine-grained similarity among data with rich semantics, while explicitly require distances between dissimilar points to be larger than a specific value for strong robustness. For this, we give an effective bound of this value based on the information coding-theoretic analysis, and the above goals are embodied into a margin-adaptive triplet loss. Furthermore, we introduce pseudo-codes via fusing multiple hash codes to explore seldom-seen semantics, alleviating the sparsity problem of similarity information. Experiments on three benchmarks show the validity of the derived bounds, and our method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Blockchain for the Internet of Vehicles towards Intelligent Transportation Systems: A Survey

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an emerging concept that is believed to help realise the vision of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). IoV has become an important research area of impactful applications in recent years due to the rapid advancements in vehicular technologies, high throughput satellite communication, Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems. IoV enables the integration of smart vehicles with the Internet and system components attributing to their environment such as public infrastructures, sensors, computing nodes, pedestrians and other vehicles. By allowing the development of a common information exchange platform between vehicles and heterogeneous vehicular networks, this integration aims to create a better environment and public space to the people as well as to enhance safety for all road users. Being a participatory data exchange and storage, the underlying information exchange platform of IoV needs to be secure, transparent and immutable in order to achieve the intended objectives of ITS. In this connection, the adoption of blockchain as a system platform for supporting the information exchange needs of IoV has been explored. Due to their decentralized and immutable nature, IoV applications enabled by blockchain are believed to have a number of desirable properties such as decentralization, security, transparency, immutability, and automation. In this paper, we present a contemporary survey on the latest advancement in blockchain for IoV. Particularly, we highlight the different application scenarios of IoV after carefully reviewing the recent literatures. We also investigate several key challenges where blockchain is applied in IoV. Furthermore, we present the future opportunities and explore further research directions of IoV as a key enabler of ITS.

Reflection Resource Management for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Wireless Networks

In this paper, the adoption of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) for multiple single-antenna source terminal (ST)-DT pairs in two-hop networks is investigated. Different from the previous studies on IRS that merely focused on tuning the reflection coefficient of all the reflection elements at IRS, in this paper, we consider the true reflection resource management. Specifically, the true reflection resource management can be realized via trigger module selection based on our proposed IRS architecture that all the reflection elements are partially controlled by multiple parallel switches of controller. As the number of reflection elements increases, the true reflection resource management will become urgently needed in this context, which is due to the non-ignorable energy consumption. Moreover, the proposed modular architecture of IRS is designed to make the reflection elements part independent and controllable. As such, our goal is to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at DTs via a joint trigger module subset selection, transmit power allocation of STs, and the corresponding passive beamforming of the trigger modules, subject to per ST power budgets and module size constraint. Whereas this problem is NP-hard due to the module size constraint, to deal with it, we transform the hard module size constraint into the group sparse constraint by introducing the mixed row block norm, which yields a suitable semidefinite relaxation. Additionally, the parallel alternating direction method of multipliers (PADMM) is proposed to identify the trigger module subset, and then subsequently the transmit power allocation and passive beamforming can be obtained by solving the original minimum SINR maximization problem without the group sparse constraint via partial linearization for generalized fractional programs.

DPCrowd: Privacy-preserving and Communication-efficient Decentralized Statistical Estimation for Real-time Crowd-sourced Data

In Internet of Things (IoT) driven smart-world systems, real-time crowd-sourced databases from multiple distributed servers can be aggregated to extract dynamic statistics from a larger population, thus providing more reliable knowledge for our society. Particularly, multiple distributed servers in a decentralized network can realize real-time collaborative statistical estimation by disseminating statistics from their separate databases. Despite no raw data sharing, the real-time statistics could still expose the data privacy of crowd-sourcing participants. For mitigating the privacy concern, while traditional differential privacy (DP) mechanism can be simply implemented to perturb the statistics in each timestamp and independently for each dimension, this may suffer a great utility loss from the real-time and multi-dimensional crowd-sourced data. Also, the real-time broadcasting would bring significant overheads in the whole network. To tackle the issues, we propose a novel privacy-preserving and communication-efficient decentralized statistical estimation algorithm (DPCrowd), which only requires intermittently sharing the DP protected parameters with one-hop neighbors by exploiting the temporal correlations in real-time crowd-sourced data. Then, with further consideration of spatial correlations, we develop an enhanced algorithm, DPCrowd+, to deal with multi-dimensional infinite crowd-data streams. Extensive experiments on several datasets demonstrate that our proposed schemes DPCrowd and DPCrowd+ can significantly outperform existing schemes in providing accurate and consensus estimation with rigorous privacy protection and great communication efficiency.

Towards Causal Explanation Detection with Pyramid Salient-Aware Network

Causal explanation analysis (CEA) can assist us to understand the reasons behind daily events, which has been found very helpful for understanding the coherence of messages. In this paper, we focus on Causal Explanation Detection, an important subtask of causal explanation analysis, which determines whether a causal explanation exists in one message. We design a Pyramid Salient-Aware Network (PSAN) to detect causal explanations on messages. PSAN can assist in causal explanation detection via capturing the salient semantics of discourses contained in their keywords with a bottom graph-based word-level salient network. Furthermore, PSAN can modify the dominance of discourses via a top attention-based discourse-level salient network to enhance explanatory semantics of messages. The experiments on the commonly used dataset of CEA shows that the PSAN outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 1.8% F1 value on the Causal Explanation Detection task.
