Spin-wave chirality and its manifestations in antiferromagnets

As first demonstrated by Tang and Cohen in chiral optics, the asymmetry in the rate of electromagnetic energy absorption between left and right enantiomers is determined by an optical chirality density [1]. Here, we demonstrate that this effect can exist in magnetic spin systems. By constructing a formal analogy with electrodynamics, we show that in antiferromagnets with broken chiral symmetry the asymmetry in local spin-wave energy absorption is proportional to a spin-wave chirality density, which is a direct counterpart of optical zilch. We propose that injection of a pure spin current into an antiferromagnet may serve as a chiral symmetry breaking mechanism, since its effect in the spin-wave approximation can be expressed in terms of additional Lifshitz invariants. We use linear response theory to show that the spin current induces a nonequilibrium spin-wave chirality density.

Optical chirality in gyrotropic media: symmetry approach

We discuss optical chirality in different types of gyrotropic media. Our analysis is based on the formalism of nongeometric symmetries of Maxwell's equations in vacuum generalized to material media with given constituent relations. This approach enables us to derive directly conservation laws related to the nongeometric symmetries. For isotropic chiral media, we demonstrate that likewise free electromagnetic field, both duality and helicity generators belong to the basis set of nongeometric symmetries that guarantees the conservation of optical chirality. In gyrotropic crystals, which exhibit natural optical activity, the situation is quite different from the case of isotropic media. For light propagating along certain crystallographic direction, there arise two distinct cases, i.~e., (1) the duality is broken but the helicity is preserved, or (2) only the duality symmetry survives. We show that the existence of one of these symmetries (duality or helicity) is enough to define optical chirality. In addition, we present examples of low-symmetry media, where optical chirality can not be defined.

Fan-type spin structure in uni-axial chiral magnets

We investigate the spin structure of a uni-axial chiral magnet near the transition temperatures in low fields perpendicular to the helical axis. We find a fan-type modulation structure where the clockwise and counterclockwise windings appear alternatively along the propagation direction of the modulation structure. This structure is often realized in a Yoshimori-type (non-chiral) helimagnet but it is rarely realized in a chiral helimagnet. To discuss underlying physics of this structure, we reconsider the phase diagram (phase boundary and crossover lines) through the free energy and asymptotic behaviors of isolated solitons. The fan structure appears slightly below the phase boundary of the continuous transition of instability-type. In this region, there are no solutions containing any types of isolated solitons to the mean field equations.

Functional renormalization-group approach to the Pokrovsky-Talapov model via modified massive Thirring fermion model

A possibility of the topological Kosterlitz-Thouless~(KT) transition in the Pokrovsky-Talapov~(PT) model is investigated by using the functional renormalization-group (RG) approach by Wetterich. Our main finding is that the nonzero misfit parameter of the model, which can be related with the linear gradient term (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction), makes such a transition impossible, what contradicts the previous consideration of this problem by non-perturbative RG methods. To support the conclusion the initial PT model is reformulated in terms of the 2D theory of relativistic fermions using an analogy between the 2D sine-Gordon and the massive Thirring models. In the new formalism the misfit parameter corresponds to an effective gauge field that enables to include it in the RG procedure on an equal footing with the other parameters of the theory. The Wetterich equation is applied to obtain flow equations for the parameters of the new fermionic action. We demonstrate that these equations reproduce the KT type of behavior if the misfit parameter is zero. However, any small nonzero value of the quantity rules out a possibility of the KT transition. To confirm the finding we develop a description of the problem in terms of the 2D Coulomb gas model. Within the approach the breakdown of the KT scenario gains a transparent meaning, the misfit gives rise to an effective in-plane electric field that prevents a formation of bound vortex-antivortex pairs.

Finite-Temperature Properties of Three-Dimensional Classical Chiral Helimagnets

A three-dimensional chiral helimagnet is analyzed using a mean-field (MF) analysis and a classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at finite temperatures. We consider a Hamiltonian containing Heisenberg exchange and uni-axial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on a simple cubic lattice. Magnetization curves calculated by the MF theory are qualitatively consistent with those observed in experiments. A comparison between lattice and continuum models clarifies the region where the continuum approximation can be applied. By combining the MF theory with the classical MC method, it is also clarified that results are quantitatively much improved by including spin correlations in the layer perpendicular to the helical axis. On the basis of our simple model, interaction parameters in $CrNb_3S_6$ are estimated. These values of exchange interactions justify a physical picture that the spins are strongly coupled in the two-dimensional layer and are weakly interacted with those in the helical chain.

Coherent sliding dynamics and spin motive force driven by crossed magnetic fields in chiral helimagnet

We demonstrated that the chiral soliton lattice formed out of a chiral helimagnet exhibits coherent sliding motion by applying a time-dependent magnetic field parallel to the helical axis, in addition to a static field perpendicular to the helical axis. To describe the coherent sliding, we use the collective coordinate method and numerical analysis. We also show that the time-dependent sliding velocity causes a time-varying Berry cap which causes the spin-motive-force. A salient feature of the chiral soliton lattice is appearance of the strongly amplified spin motive force which is directly proportional to the macroscopic number of solitons (magnetic kinks).

Origin of adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin transfer torques in current-driven magnetic domain wall motion

A consistent theory to describe the correlated dynamics of quantum mechanical itinerant spins and semiclassical local magnetization is given. We consider the itinerant spins as quantum mechanical operators, whereas local moments are considered within classical Lagrangian formalism. By appropriately treating fluctuation space spanned by basis functions, including a zero-mode wave function, we construct coupled equations of motion for the collective coordinate of the center-of-mass motion and the localized zero-mode coordinate perpendicular to the domain wall plane. By solving them, we demonstrate that the correlated dynamics is understood through a hierarchy of two time scales: Boltzmann relaxation time when a non-adiabatic part of the spin-transfer torque appears, and Gilbert damping time when adiabatic part comes up.

Spin resonance in chiral helimagnet

It is suggested that marked features of symmetry breaking mechanism and elementary excitations in chiral helimagnet come up as visible effects in electron spin resonance (ESR) profile. Under the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis, elementary excitations are respectively described by the helimagnon associated with rotational symmetry breaking and the magnetic kink crystal phonon associated with translational symmetry breaking. We demonstrate how the ESR spectra distinguish these excitations.

Magnetic soliton transport over topological spin texture in chiral helimagnet with strong easy-plane anisotropy

We show the existence of an isolated soliton excitation over the topological ground state configuration in chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia exchange and the strong easy-plane anisotropy. The magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis stabilizes the kink crystal state which plays a role of "topological protectorate" for the traveling soliton with a definite handedness. To find new soliton solution, we use the Bäcklund transformation technique. It is pointed out that the traveling soliton carries the magnon density and a magnetic solition transport may be realized.

Theory of spin current in chiral helimagnet

We give detailed description of the transport spin current in the chiral helimagnet. Under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis, the magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) is formed. Once the kink crystal begins to move under the Galilean boost, the spin-density accumulation occurs inside each kink and there emerges periodic arrays of the induced magnetic dipoles carrying the transport spin current. The coherent motion of the kink crystal dynamically generates the spontaneous demagnetization field. This mechanism is analogous to the Döring-Becker-Kittel mechanism of the domain wall motion in ferromagnets. To describe the kink crystal motion, we took account of not only the tangential $ϕ$-fluctuations but the longitudinal $θ$-fluctuations around the helimagnetic configuration. Based on the collective coordinate method and the Dirac's canonical formulation for the singular Lagrangian system, we derived the closed formulae for the mass, spin current and induced magnetic dipole moment accompanied with the kink crystal motion. To materialize the theoretical model presented here, symmetry-adapted material synthesis would be required, where the interplay of crystallographic and magnetic chirality plays a key role there.

Transport magnetic currents driven by moving kink crystal in chiral helimagnets

We show that the bulk transport magnetic current is generated by the moving magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) formed in the chiral helimagnet under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis. The current is caused by the non-equilibrium transport momentum with the kink mass being determined by the spin fluctuations around the kink crystal state. An emergence of the transport magnetic currents is then a consequence of the dynamical off-diagonal long range order along the helical axis. We derive an explicit formula for the inertial mass of the kink crystal and the current in the weak field limit.

Ferroelectric phase transition, ionicity condensation, and multicriticality in charge transfer organic complexes

To elucidate a novel pressure-temperature phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) complex TTF-CA, we study the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffith (BEG) model. In addition to the local charge transfer energy and the inter-stack polar (dipole-dipole) interaction, we take account of the inter-stack electrostriction effect. Using the self-consistent chain-mean-field theory, where the intra-stack degrees of freedom are exactly treated by the transfer-matrix method, we reproduce the gas-liquid-solid like phase diagram corresponding to the neutral (N), paraelectric ionic (I$_{\rm{para}}$), and ferroelectric ionic (I$_{\rm{ferro}}$) phases, respectively. We also give an explanation on the experimentally observed multicritical behavior and concomitant discontinuous inter-stack lattice contraction in TTF-CA.

Signature of the staggered flux state around a superconducting vortex in underdoped cuprates

Based on the SU(2) lattice gauge theory formulation of the t-J model, we discuss possible signature of the unit cell doubling associated with the staggered flux (SF) state in the lightly doped spin liquid. Although the SF state appears only dynamically in a uniform d-wave superconducting (SC) state, a topological defect [SU(2) vortex] freezes the SF state inside the vortex core. Consequently, the unit cell doubling shows up in the hopping ($χ_{ij}$) and pairing ($Δ_{ij}$) order parameters of physical electrons. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away from the core center, a correlated staggered modulation of $χ_{ij}$ and $Δ_{ij}$ becomes predominant. We predict that over the region outside the core and inside the internal gauge field penetration depth around a vortex center, the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits staggered peak-dip (SPD) structure inside the V-shaped profile when measured on the bonds. The SPD structure has its direct origin in the unit cell doubling associated with the SF core and the robust topological texture, which has little to do with the symmetry of the d-wave order parameter. Therefore the structure may survive the tunneling matrix element effects and easily be detected by STM experiment.

Staggered local density-of-states around the vortex in underdoped cuprates

We have studied a single vortex with the staggered flux (SF) core based on the SU(2) slave-boson theory of high $T_c$ superconductors. We find that whereas the center in the vortex core is a SF state, as one moves away from the core center, a correlated staggered modulation of the hopping amplitude $χ$ and pairing amplitude $Δ$ becomes predominant. We predict that in this region, the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits staggered modulation when measured on the bonds, which may be directly detected by STM experiments.

Quantum phase transitions and collapse of the Mott gap in the $d=1+ε$ dimensional half-filled Hubbard model

We study the low-energy asymptotics of the half-filled Hubbard model with a circular Fermi surface in $d=1+ε$ continuous dimensions, based on the one-loop renormalization-group (RG) method. Peculiarity of the $d=1+ε$ dimensions is incorporated through the mathematica structure of the elementary particle-partcile (PP) and particle-hole (PH) loops: infrared logarithmic singularity of the PH loop is smeared for $ε>0$. The RG flows indicate that a quantum phase transition (QPT) from a metallic phase to the Mott insulator phase occurs at a finite on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ for $ε>0$. We also discuss effects of randomness.
